JMW AD-SCX an unique looking wheel that is definitely a rare find. Calling this pair rough would be generous. The old caps are well rusted through, lips oxidized and faces chipped. Even still a worthy share! Sizes in a common 14x6J 4H/114.3 +10 and with a 16,800 yen price tag I imagine they will be floating around for a while. Check them out here.

A ultra rare wheel from Yokohama, the Advan Super Forging. Few examples of these have popped up in the last few years so we are excited to share this one with you. Not the most aesthetically unique wheel but what it lacks in looks it makes up for in illusiveness. One size only 13×5.5J 4H/114.3 +20 can be seen here.

Another brand that is hardly seen is this wheel from Clime Racing. A wide slant lip and interesting face make this a very cool kyusha shoe. Sets can be had relatively cheap but a no quick find. This pair is sized in 14x6J 4H/114.3 +13 and can be seen here.

Hayashi is best known for their models like the Street, Yayoi, and Techno line up, but this is nothing like those. The Hayashi Toripola is at best an ultra rare find. It’s a simple tri-spoke design exclusively for FWD. You better believe if I had an ef honda these would be on there in a heartbeat. 14x6J 4H/100 +40 check them out here.

Race purpose! Yep these Work Ralliart Mirage wheels are basically useless unless you’ve done some serious retrofitting, but damn they look cool. Surprisingly we’ve seen more examples of these come through the auctions than we’d ever have thought. If you’re looking for some killer garage art check these out here.

Finally we have a wheel with an identity crisis. The Ueda Super Eight RS by SSR, surprisingly not branded by RS Watanabe. Already the rarest of the 8 banana-spoke configurations, this pair is in NOS Condition! Multi drilled for 4/5 hole PCD’s in 17×9 +34, we could see this going on a variety of 90’s classics. Take a look here.

Weekly Wheel Roundup Pt. 5 https://kyushashoes.com/wwr-5/ Sun, 04 Dec 2016 15:54:43 +0000 http://kyushashoes.com/?p=2008 defi

Alright on to part 5 and going strong! This week we have some rarities from Speed Star Racing, August Japan, Hoshino Impul, Super Star Racing, and Hayashi. Check them out below!

Here we have the Challenge Defi 757 Mesh from Speed Star. This ultra-rare model is very hard to come across let alone in this sort of condition. The lesser known mesh is often overshadowed by its sister wheel the Defi Fin, but make no mistake this model might be even more of a special find. Its two-toned face and high quality finish, combined with its rarity, make this one of our favorite mesh! Specs are 15x6J 4H/100 +40 listed here.

march

The August Japan March Mag has been a really illusive wheel before this year. Three or four sets have popped up over the last 6 months however, which is quite interesting. This set here looks to be a great candidate for a quick refinish and set up on your early 80’s ride. Sized in 15x6J +13 / 15×6.5 +7 4H/114.3. The real trick would be to find the matching centercaps. Check out the listing here.

impulrs

The Hoshino Impul RS might not be the rarest wheel out there but it does have a certain appeal. This is a special set in that it’s available in NOS condition with all original hardware, caps and boxes. Models can be found in one piece and multi-piece examples. This set is modestly sized in 16x7J +31 / 16x8J +38 5H/114.3 listing can be seen here.

ssri

Super Star SSR I seen here is a wild design that isn’t seen frequently, but when they do pop up they almost always sell quick. This pair has quite a few bids and will no doubt pull a worthy price. Sized at 14×7 4H/114.3 +0 the listing can be seen here.

streetmag

Next up the a special set of Hayashi Racing Street Mag.  Although made in Italy by Campagnolo, these retain JWL/VIA certification.   See the listing here.  Size is an incredibly average 14x6J 4H/114.3 +15. The Street is a timeless design that is taken a step further in this magnesium built wheel. A special centercap came with these specific wheels that can still be found, although not cheap. Keep a keen eye out for these among the ton of standard streets out there!

mclaren

Lastly The McLaren International MS-1, another Speed Star wheel! This mega-cool pair has been floating around the auctions for quite some time; no surprise as the price is up to 90,000yen for the pair. Specs are 17×9.5 5H/114.3 +30 complete with fined caps and all. The auction can be seen here.

Weekly Wheel Roundup Pt. 1 https://kyushashoes.com/wwr-1/ Sat, 05 Nov 2016 20:21:39 +0000 http://kyushashoes.com/?p=1527 wwr-spalding-message-ii

At Kyusha Shoes we really love the hunt for new and interesting finds. This search often comes with new discoveries, scarcely seen sets and oddball sizes. We want to share with you a weekly collection of rarities that we know you’ll love. Stay tuned each week for this new series to see what we come across and prepare yourself for the first installment of the Weekly Wheel Roundup!

First up is an often unthought of brand when it comes to vintage alloy — Spalding, specifically, the MESSAGE-II model. A seriously cool tri-spoke wheel, complete with centercaps and great condition original stickers. Specs as follows: 14x6J 4H / 114.3 +15.

wwr-southernways-mini-pop

Next is a set not yet in the database here. The Southern Ways Mini-POP. This adorable wheel is featured new in the box in a tiny 10×4.3 4H / 110 +38, perfect for adding some flair to your kei car!

wwr-colin-lehnlec

While vintage 4×114 wheels are quite common the 4×100 pattern can be somewhat more difficult to source. Here we have an amazing set of aero inspired wheels recently refinished. Presumably under the Colin brand model LEHNLEC. While we try and gather more info on these enjoy the images! 14×6 4H / 100 +35.

wwr-hayashi-street-centerlock

Hayashi Streets are one of the most iconic vintage wheels, but also readily available and a dime a dozen on the second hand market. That being said, the seldom seen center lock version is a seriously cool find. While this set has been up for a while it’s still totally worth sharing. STF Centerlock 15×6.5 4H +32.

wwr-sharak-x4

Lastly this newly discovered model of Bridgestone’s Sharak line the X-4. A very neat one-piece wheel that really nailed the old vintage style. Size is 13 6J +10.

We hope you enjoyed the first series of the Weekly Wheel Roundup and to celebrate kickstarting this new series a few bonus finds to follow. Keep a lookout for some serious updates to the database and feel free to share your own discoveries with us. Happy hunting!

Hayashi Command https://kyushashoes.com/hayashi-command/ Fri, 18 Mar 2016 13:11:32 +0000 http://kyushashoes.com/?p=1423 Motorfan 1979-7 Hayashi Command SPS

Target these!

The wheel of a sophisticated man: 3-piece Command.
In racing, a 3-piece wheel has merit because, strength and rigidity and lightness can be maintained while making the rim wide. A 3-piece wheel however, though theoretically superior, cannot achieve a high rating unless it is accompanied by advanced technology.  With the know how that came from our Street Wheel, we can take full advantage of the benefits of a 3-piece design. With a light and stiff rim, and impactful center section design this splendid 3-piece wheel was completed! Now it is exciting to be able to deliver it to you!

Available at authorized retailers.
As this advertisement from 1979 suggests, the first three-piece wheel ever to come from Hayashi Racing was the popular Command SPS.  This step to modular construction came relatively late compared to other wheel makers.  Of all the major brands, only Yokohama moved later.
The appearance of the Command was fairly simple, with slightly tapered, flat and chunky spokes.  The back of the centres however, had deep cutouts, and a minimalistic appearance which suggests that weight savings were prioritized.  As the advertisement says, the Command did offer considerable weight savings over the one piece cast Street wheels.  In 1979, a 14 7J Hayashi Racing Street was a robust 6.3kg.  In comparison, an identically sized Command SPS is 5.75kg. Neither are what we would consider lightweight today, but 0.5kg was a meaningful savings over the Hayashi Street which was nearly a decade older than the Command.
Hayashi Command SPS
Available sizes were 13 and 14inch diameters only, with 5H, five spoke versions in 14″ PCD114 only.  Four spoke wheels were available with PCD from 110-120mm.  In used markets, ultra aggressive 10J widths can be seen from time to time, although catalog references list 8J with -10mm offset as the maximum size. Shell construction is shared with the ultra-rare Command Mesh. Thirteen inch sizes use 12 assembly bolts, while 14 inch uses 16. Center sections were front mounted.

hayashi-command-bxr-1979

The Command SPS was a popular wheel at the time despite carrying a price that exceeded much of the competition.  Only recently, have they moved from the “common” category to the “very rare” category in used marketplaces.  The SPS is the most popular Command wheel, and features a centre section that is silver, with black trim.  The more rare Command find however is the Command BXR which is an identical wheel, with an all black centre, and its own unique model designation.

When you felt like the story was just getting started, the sun came up.

Gotta smile when big companies not only acknowledge touge action, but try to get buyers pumped up about it.

]]> 1423 Hayashi – Factory Pimping https://kyushashoes.com/hayashi-factory-pimping/ Mon, 03 Jun 2013 14:37:00 +0000 http://kyushashoes.com/?p=184 italian-streets2

Last month a reader shared with us his Italian made Hayashi Streets.   An interesting find for sure, and enlightening, as we discovered that the stampings on the wheel back and face were identical to those used by Italian manufacturer Campagnolo.  With many wheel manufacturers of decades past deceased, stampings are sometimes the only clues we have to identify unknown wheels, but as we see here, even these stampings can be misleading and confusing.

Hayashi-Bomber-1981

This Hayashi Bomber for example, was produced only one month after the Street above, but features very differently formatted stampings.  Here the date of production in October of 1981.  Note that the stickers on this particular wheel marked them as being a 1982 model.  Even more interesting is the other logo stamped on the wheel, which I’m sure indicates the actual manufacturer.  In this case, I recognize the logo from other wheels, but can’t actually place it.

Hayashi-TR-Mesh-1982

And then there are these TR-Mesh, produced 8 months later and marked clearly with the Enkei “E”.  Also not the wording “Supervised by Hayashi Racing”.  Doesn’t seem simple at all.  Note that here, that date stamping is a two digit year over the month (82/6).  In similar format we also see (H/28).  It is unclear what this second stamping indicates, but perhaps a model or production code.  To this day Enkei wheels still have the same markings.

Italian Streets https://kyushashoes.com/italian-streets/ Sun, 05 May 2013 16:36:14 +0000 http://kyushashoes.com/?p=135 italian-streets

Here is what looks like an interesting note about Hayashi wheels.  We’ve observed a few variations of the popular Street wheel, and one reason for that seems to be that some of them were produced over seas.  These particular wheels, as submitted by a reader, are stamped “Made In Italy” and include on the back side, what appears to be a stamp commonly used by Campagnolo denoting production date of September 1981.  For reference see the image below taken from the backside of a Campagnolo 103E: February 1980.  We also note the font used in stampings is identical to that of Campagnolo’s, as well as the formating of the size and model markings on the wheel face.

Hayashi 2463 Center Lock System https://kyushashoes.com/hayashi-2463-center-lock-system/ Fri, 22 Mar 2013 15:15:55 +0000 http://kyushashoes.com/?p=129 hornetbig683

Someone emailed this week asking about center-lock wheels and there fitment on cars with conventional hubs. We saw a couple months ago, a “faux” center-lock wheel by Volk. Hayashi’s 2463 system however, is a real center-lock that uses an PCD adapter.

hornetadapter

It’s very simple, as you can see. I certainly question the capacity of the single stud and nut. I’ve never seen one in person, but it looks to be no bigger than M14 size. The nut at least looks big, maybe a 27mm, but I’ve seen documentation that says it should be torqued to a somewhat insignificant 140ft-lbs.

hornetbackandadpater

On the backside of the wheel we see cutouts for the lug nuts that would hold the adapter in place, as well as some studs protruding that would mesh with the adapter to prevent it from spinning inside the wheel. All in all pretty simple and awesome IMO, but there must be some reason why it never took off, and became more popular. Was it super pricy back in the day? Was it a major liability for the wheel manufacture, killing hashirya and innocent motorists in horrific accidents when wheels detached from their adapaters?

Yahoo Alert https://kyushashoes.com/yahoo-alert/ Tue, 05 Feb 2013 15:10:43 +0000 http://kyushashoes.com/?p=121 Buying goodies from Japan has been an expensive venture for the past few years. But look at our dollar climb now. The Canadian dollar is getting close to even with the Japanese yen, and I for one, am going berserk on Yahoo. In fact, I’m sending my wife and kids there for three months just so they can pack and send boxes my way.

XE683

Mind you, it’s not 2009 again, when our dollar hit almost 110円, but 95円 feels so so much better than 75円 that I really can’t hold back.

Somebody buy these Hornets!!! And if not them, there are tonnes of other rad kyusha wheels around right now.
