… had planned on Linux all along (have Suse on a desktop), but NT-derived XP turned out to be so trouble-free, I couldn’t justify the hassle/admin overhead of l’ix… plus there was this obscure cross-compiler toolchain I needed (to re-program the embedded SCADA for the entire North American electric grid, lol), and even though it was based on GNU/gcc, it runs only on XP… the irony. Anyway, only seen Duh Blue Screen o’ Death like twice in 7 years, so gonna keep patching it up and chugging along… maybe set up a strong VPN to keep out Russians and Nigerians, and kick back with some Old Grand-Dad bourbon…

The dell bios and dell proprietary designs aren’t a killer, get an SSD and some more RAM and you can always upgrade it to win7, or leave it on XP, and see huge performance gains….

combofix/malwarebytes/avast are all windows version agnostic

-or-

get the ssd and more ram, and whack Suse linux on there, it will fly.

I’m looking at keeping a 2007 vintage Dell laptop (2GB DRAM) wheezing along on the now UNsupported XP Home, with help from the semi-pros on MSFN.org… suicidal? Get a NON-Dell BIOS for the long run?
