Telegraph operators could send and receive morse code to each other even with the batteries disconnected because the current induced by the solar storm was enough to power their equipment. Also, you saw auroras bright as hell even as far south as the American heartland. Given they didn’t have the electrical grid we have now, it must have been cool as shit to have witnessed the Carrington event, lol. Today it would have sucked though.

They did a study where they exposed modern cars to simulated EMPs some years back, they found that almost none of them were permanently disabled, the worst that happened was a few stalled out. When that happened all you had to do was turn the ignition off, and restart the car. The only serious concern about a nuke induced EMP that I can see would be the electrical grid, where a major local failure causes a cascade of failures elsewhere, like what happened during that huge blackout that hit the northeast back in 1965. Even then it would probably be contained to just one small region of the country.

Problem with the Carrington event is the same as how I see it with the Yellowstone Caldera. There’s only so much you can do to prepare given limited resources, if the Sun were to suddenly explode tomorrow there’s not a thing any of us can do about it. We might be able to do something to minimize a Carrington event, but the people who run this shit show, and the general public, just don’t think about shit like that, and wouldn’t care to know even if you told them. They’d rather spend resources on crap that pleases them now, rather than on protecting against catastrophes that may or may not happen before they die.

Only solution is to end universal suffrage and only allow people to run things who know how the tech that civilization runs on works. I remember watching a documentary about the late Stone age – early Bronze age where they observed that Bronze age chieftains were buried with not only their weapons, but bronze casting and bronze-smithing tools. The speculation was that the bronze smiths were also the leaders of the tribes back then. Makes a lot more sense than the system we have now.

A blog all about contradicting the widespread superstition that nuclear wars are unsurvivable and debunking hardened dogma of exaggerated nuclear effects.
