Given how much energy it takes to smash apart an engine block and put it together (refining, machining, etc). I would suspect that doing the equivalent on a molecular/atomic level would be far more expensive energy-wise. In what form would the energy-source and distribution be? Ambient thermal energy would be inadequate for anything serious tech-wise.

This would seem to obviate the “goop” form of nanotechnology. Which is why the “grey goo scenario” has always been laughable to me.

In my view it would be more likely to have a nanofactory as a kind of box that you would put purified raw materials into and pump in megawatts of power to make it manufacture what you desire. Ditto for a nanofactory that produces the raw materials. Call the two of them a nanoassember and a nanorecycler.

Years ago I was friends with some of the young people involved in the astronaut training program and various space exploration organizations. Elon was connected to them through the Mars Society and SpaceX, and at one point they organized a dinner to discuss the programs, where one of my friends met Elon.

They said he was very socially awkward, and ended up getting drunk in front of them, which made it even more awkward. So, your assessment may be pretty accurate.

Elon does not discuss his religious origins much, but many deny he was Jewish despite attending a Jewish school growing up.

Read between the lines mate, he’s already written extensively on this. Check the archives and the pages of the site, especially the “Head candy” section. I do not want to put words in his mouth, but my best effort of interpretation is: You cannot turn things around, there is too much momentum built up in the cancer that is western leadership. You must wait for the cancer to eat itself and collapse before you can even hope to begin anew.

But better to read it and see for yourself
