The Russia letter ч makes the word чай which is chai and chai is tea. ч = ch
English words could be shortened by one letter if ч would be added to the English alphabet.

… yes, but nothing ever happens in the English world, so my intent was entertainment only. The French have a National Language Academy which claims to monitor French language, but still silent letters remain in French, as in English.
There are rumours the Russian Cyrillic alphabet might be replaced perhaps with the letters and sounds we use in English … p,r,s,d,f,g,h,i,j,l,n.
The Russian alphabet is easy enough so why change it.
Some Chinese want to replace their characters with pinyin (with tone markers/numbers!) which in my opinion would completely wreck the language.
What would happen to the art-form of Chinese calligraphy ?

I’d hate to see Cyrillic replaced and the richness and character destroyed. An affront to culture and history.
While attempting to learn Russian I once, in a hurry, grabbed a book from the library. When I later opened it I found it was transliterated in its entirety by the author (American, of course) and completely unreadable -it might just as well have been written in encryption. This wasn’t a phrase book for those with no Russian.
Useless, utterly useless and what condescending arrogance too, trying to impose American boorish swagger on the Russian language.

I bought two secondhand (VGC) Teach Yourself Russian books three months back on Ebay for AU$14 post free from the UK. Complete course for beginners – Daphne West and Business Russian – Bridges/Rayner/Tverdokhlebova. Sure there are pdf free downloads on the web, but having a physical copy is essential for me. Download the Russian version of Yandex, go to the tabs … you will see переводчик (translator). Английский (English) – Русский (Russian) – Китайский (Chinese). There is a virtual keyboard and microphone (voice recognition) included. I have not spoken Russian into the microphone yet (lazy), and I need to see if this feature works.
Any translator cannot be trusted, so you need to check further if need be. Watching subtitled movies while paying close attention is an effortless way to learn.

I had a Russian engineering friend. He told me his wife is the the one wearing the pants in the family, he just bring home money. His wife was a math professor, and his has one daughter who act and dress just like her mother. Of cause, Alex had a very young lady boss as well.

A Russian was discussing the renovations he was making to his house. He said keramic for ceramic and this got me thinking. Letter c in Russian always has the sound of English s. He said keramic because the Russian word is керамический (kerami … cheski). English has three misguided letters, which should be corrected, and these letters are c … k and s.
We have our Eastern c (s) … ceiling, cerebellum, citation, cerebral, cider, cereal, … then we have our Western c (not s) … cat, call, cold, car, can, and so on.
So why not use k as the Russians rightly do … kat, kall, kold, kar, kan, and so on.
I feel sorry for those whose second language is English, you just have to learn this mess up.

J … I taught myself to speak, read and write some very necessary Chinese. I filled out all documentation forms myself in Chinese, quickly in the offices, including the marriage registration office and read the produced documents for any mistakes. In those days not many 外国人 were seen in China, so when people see 一个外国人 is able to write Chinese they are very amazed and very amused. Wife thinks I learn Russian to look for Russian wife, but this is not true. (Mad Cat 2 ! )

That is very impressive. How long did it take you to be able to do it? My neighbor told me she went home and she saw some foreigner speak a very good Beijing dialect, if she close her eyes she could not even tell they were foreigners.

J … in my early teens I was already a radical thinker concerning socialism. In the UK I remember my father telling my uncle that if a truck carries goods to a major location, that truck should not return empty. This is practical economic socialism. In Australia, in my mid-teens I visit East Winds Bookshops where I see the treasures of the East. I was a student, no money, so cannot buy any impressive books but did buy Red Book. The bookshop owner allows me to read many books in the shop, because there are very few customers. The government did not like this shop and it got fire bombed. Later with a good job I subscribe to Chinese magazines posted from Beijing. My job allowed me some freedom, so I carry a notebook and pen in my pocket where I review and practice Chinese. One German boss thinks I am a spy, but my higher boss is Italian and likes me like a son, letting me do what I want and I get all the best project work. Then I am known as the “protected species” by everybody and the really big bosses invite me to their meetings. I studied Chinese in this way for four years. Now I have forgotten a lot so I like to revise … refresh.
We all like you in the Cafe … J, you are a valuable contributor. You must not think in any negative way, and the most important issue is to make this Cafe interesting.
4 years is very good. My daughter caught that red thingy last year, now she is in college trying to forget about politics. I wish my children can do as well. I am not going anywhere. I like your choice of music and movies. They are actually all new to me. I am more into old stuff.

Funny as from my observations of building quality in Australia and other parts of the world, I’d say all Australian Builders are Crooks. The quality of housing stock in that country is very poor quality which is not reflected in the real estate prices which are among the highest in the world.
I know the Norther Irish build much better quality dwellings, more along the lines of Northern and Eastern Europe.
I wouldn’t be too quick to blame the builders, though for sure there are some shoddy ones out there. Much bigger problem is the so-called developers, the money-grubbing jerks who buy then rip down good solid old houses with nice yards so they can build crappy dogbox flats, or five townhouses shoehorned onto a block with no backyard or space for kids to run around, or whatever.
When I worked in civil construction a few years back, I knew plenty of good carpenters, concreters, brickies etc. who had got out of the house-building game because they were tired of being forced to compromise their principles cutting corners everywhere to save a few bob for the scumbag who hired them. Given the chance, most of those blokes would love to build proper homes. Maybe after the bubble bursts things will change. If the whole economy doesn’t blow up along with it that is.

Today, here where I live, everybody is remembering the lost ones, that’s why this poem. Oh yeah, at first it was composed in German, and it’s funny because that’s me, I can’t be always serious, especially when thinking at death…I know, I know, death is not funny at all but that’s the way I’ve done the poem – between tears and smile and, as Bro said, death can wait for a while, I have a lot to do.

Do you know the story of Plum Blossom River ? … if I remember correctly.
A boatman finds paradise through a secret way beside the river.
He is treated like a King, and gets tired, so escapes back into the rough world.
After a few years he wants to return to paradise, and searches the river for the entrance he remembered to be where some plum blossoms floated on the water.
Now there are countless plum blossoms the length of the river and he cannot find what he is looking for. A story of gain and of loss!

Are you talking about 桃花源記? I did not read it, but it is well know for the phrases 世外桃源 (utopia). Or 桃源一梦(something did not happen:-). I could be wrong.

I have been called upon by my nieces who visited recently to disclose painful family secrets. This new generation is tough but forgiving. Mothers who have sons with possible genetic based conditions are relentless so cough up the information, I did. Painful.
Along the way, I we bought shirts: The younger folk did “Trust Nobody emblazoned in bold letters with Tupac Shakur (?) holding up his finger in a F-you position:” ; whereas I settled on one that said, ” Never Underestimate the Power of Stupid people in large Groups” printed against a background of a Capitol building. We wore them for Halloween. But I did pass on the Putin knee high socks ( there were only two left of the rack)–he seemed to be as popular as Kennedy.

I dig the song because 40 years ago I loaded 16 tons of Bering Sea King crab in 30 hours straight (once through all the gear…..about 300 pots…..) with oilskins on…ie, no “sack time” in the bunk…… just 3-4 catnaps laying on the galley floor with full rain gear and boots between strings of dozens of pots set several miles apart from each other and a few hearty meals prepared by the deckhand cook who went into the galley for 30-40 minutes while we ran the deck with 3 men instead of 4.
110,000 pounds in 30 hours…oh 55 tons..but divided by 4 on deck = 13.7 tons each……
But counting the undersized males and all the females tossed overboard….yeah 16 tons.
THEN a good long sleep and a turn or two in the captain’s chair watching the radar screen in the darkness for 2-3 hours…steaming to Kodiak to deliver the live crab.
That was a $5,000 1977 dollars “man share”……7.5% of the catch ..crew 30% Captain 15% Boat owner 55%

The deck is altered. We had no crane in the 70’s. We had a long boom running from the mast upward from the second level of the pilot house at about a 35 degree angle upward to near the end of the stern. We used a hydraulic winch with pulley sliding up and down the boom to hook the bridles of 800 pound pots and use the rolling of the boat to drop them into place, for stacking and moving.
WHY? Forget me! Because it is relevant to the Capitalism/Communism debate and a mostly unknown private venture between Alaskans and Soviets…..in the Bering Sea and North Pacific mid 1980s….

In the recently released CIA files there is evidence that George H.W. Bush, aka Bush 41, or who I refer to as Bush-the-Not-Stupid to differentiate him from his son, was in Dallas, TX on the day that President Kennedy was shot.
For years, George H.W.Bush said he couldn’t remember where he was on the day JFK was shot. I was two years old on that day, so I don’t think I remember where I was, although I do have a memory of the horse drawn coffin on TV from the funeral. But for the whole time I grew up everyone, and absolutely everyone, remembered where they were on the day that Kennedy was shot. So, and again, this is according to the internet and I have not verfied this, the recently released CIA files show that George H.W. Bush was in Dallas that day.
And of course, one of the things that is not being covered at all by the always content hungry, multiple channel, 24/7 news monster is these recently released JFK files. Any time the noise machine goes quiet I start to wonder why, especially since this is on a story that regularly still

I’m curious about who the Russophobic Canadian individuals are who’ve been counter-sanctioned. The Pentagon/CIA seems to like using Canada as a cover for aggression. And then bleats loudly afterwards (or during) about how corrupt Canada’s government/military is. (See Libya, see Ukraine) Maybe with a presidential election coming up, Russia doesn’t want these people visiting. Because they are CIA affiliated types. It did surprise me how quickly the counter-sanctions came. With the US, Russia deliberates for a long time before taking a step.
A random thought today: how do you increase funds for the military without funding wars of aggression? This relies on international agencies to enforce, doesn’t it? Thinking about Canada, specifically — it’s become clear in my mind that with no military there is no Canada. And not philosophically. The limited aspiring-to-be-sovereign status we enjoy now is nothing compared to what would happen if this country was run entirely out of Washington and New York (and it’s not – before I hear protests.) I don’t know how these decisions are made, but I postulate that some of Canada’s participation in overt or covert imperial wars results from compromise. Canada needs to keep it’s military to remain a nation-state — and I imagine in order to do that, we could be required to support American military adventures (especially in the 90’s until 2015 when the counterbalance of USSR/Russia wasn’t there.) Some military support would be genuine too, I’m sure, reflecting shared beliefs between US and Canadian politicians. I’m a leftist and I don’t want to accept that, but isn’t this why international agencies are so necessary? Canada … 80 percent of trade with the US – and Washington seems capable (to me) of fixing or manipulating all commodity prices. Not to mention currencies. It’s a bit delicate, isn’t it. So how does the discussion on wars of aggression get started??
It’s a good question and having a military does bolster sovereignty and support an identity. Armed Forces are useful in civilian disaster situations etc.That said, Costa Rica hasn’t had an army since 1949 and it is surrounded by countries with past or present instability. One can also question how much is left of Canada’s sovereignty. Armed forces and Canadian police regularly cross train with their US counterparts.
Aside from civilian support, armed forces are basically there for either defence or offense. Canada should get out of any offensive adventurism and as for defence, who is going to attack Canada at a state level?
The USA is the obvious answer but they have no need to attack Canada since it would be expensive and unnecessary when they can get whatever they want at anytime.
As you say a delicate balance given the 70-80% trade with the USA.
Canada certainly doesn’t need a Trump equivalent boorishly crashing about and it would do well to tone down the insults -bear-baiting CBC and one-sided russophobe support- and keep a short leash on Freeland shenanigans.

I appreciate what you’re saying, but I see it a bit differently.
They don’t get what they want. They want more, they want it all. Full control. It’s a myth that the US is satisfied with what they receive and always gets what they want. Russian interests will prevent a direct attempt at military intimidation. But for the “terrorism” and such, Canada is on its own. And, really, for the next several decades, it seems reasonable to expect instability throughout the Americas, which will directly affect Canada. This requires a military capable of defending the homeland while sending resources to other parts of the Americas. I know the previous government discussed having Canada’s military merge with the American one, with Canada’s officers reporting to American generals. (And I wonder if this is one of the sticking points with NAFTA negotiations.)
From what I’ve seen, Trudeau does seem to have a good grip on Freeland (and I’ve heard some praise for her handling of the softwood lumber dispute.) I do agree with Zhakarova that lobbyists are to blame for the sanctions — which no other Canadian party voted against, by the way!! Clearly, there is agreement across the political class that it’s best for Canada to support the US Russophobic lobby. If the people of Canada disagree, then they will have to speak up and tell their representatives.
