Catalan crisis. Reply to NYT article by Oriol Junqueras

In a recent article published in The New York Times, “Catalonia Will Not Retreat”, Mr. Junqueras conveniently failed to mention that at least half the Catalans are against his pet project. 70 out of 135 MPs of the Catalan Parliament -representing around 50% of the popular vote- were in favor of the Declaration of Independence. This majority, insufficient for such a fateful decision in any modern democracy, wouldn’t have been sufficient to change the Catalan Statute of Autonomy. La Vanguardia, a Catalan newspaper, denounced “the vulnerations of the law and the rights of the opposition by the [former Catalan] Government”, led by Mr. Puigdemont and Mr. Junqueras. The EU has opened a rule of law infringement procedure for similar abuses by the current parliamentary majority in Poland. The vote of October 1st, boycotted by parties representing over 50% of votes in Catalonia, lacked basic democratic guarantees: not even the observers invited by the Catalan government certified its results, there was no census, no “no” camp, there were instances of stuffed boxes and double voting, etc. Contrary to the Catalan Government’s unreliable data, turnout was probably under 40%. It was no referendum, but a mobilization aimed to deprive the rest of Catalans of their status as citizens of Spain.

Spain is a de-centralised country where Catalonia enjoys a considerable degree of self-rule, controlling education, health and police. In fact, the biggest loss of autonomy for Catalonia in decades is due to Junqueras’ government unlawful, reckless actions. These forced the Spanish government, with the support from the Senate, other democratic parties and much of Catalonia’s opposition, to temporarily activate a constitutional provision in order to restore the rule of law in the region- including Catalonia’s own Statute, repealed by Junqueras’ government- until the regional elections of December 21.

I note on the picture that there appear to be 5 fire-exinguishers, three of which are bright red and which stand out like sore thumbs.

I had hoped that someone would either be enraged or appreciative of my warped, dry sense of humour but then realised that I really should have pasted the ballistic missile transporter link directly beneath the last sentence to avoid the latter being connnected with the fire extinguisher recall.

CBC news has recently been pulling that American news trick describing Trump’s tweets as “incorrect”. They have no idea if the things Trump says are true or not. They used to report the facts and let the viewer connect the dots themselves. Now they seem to be treating viewers as too stupid to do their own critical thinking. In fact, it seems that Canadian media is being inundated with American military content. There must be at least half a dozen American military TV shows on Canadian prime time TV these days. I don’t know if people watch that crap or not. I pay a lot for cable TV and I find I’m watching mostly Turner Classic Movies and the Aboriginal channel. Everything else seems to be propaganda these days. Hawaii 5 O is always torturing people or extra judicially executing them. I’d cancel my cable if not for my wife.
I don’t watch TV except under rare sufferance so I have no idea. The last time I was a captive client in a room with a TV I discussed the lies of the talking news head ad nauseam. This had the effect of the TV being changed to the Food channel.

BTW for LOL, just last night I was bitten by an unlicensed dog owned by an Indian neighbour two houses away in the same street. The dog (part of a pack) attacked from behind while I was jogging. Anyway, I got myself an anti-rabies injection and reported the incident to the local authorities i.e. the stray dog control unit. They will round them up for disposal soon.

After listening to Trumps war speech tonight in South Korea. I think only a miracle will stop nuclear war from breaking out. After hearing what he said. I think the North Koreans will be filled with an unbelievable fury. I doubt they’ll agree to anything now.
So the question will be if China and Russia will bow down to the US over this. And I’m not sure but that they will. I only see the backbone of a Chamberlain in those countries leaders. And that is certainly what the US is counting on.We should see very soon if the US has judged them right or not.

My conclusion: to save herself from extinction, Russia will have to give up those lands to their rightful owners i.e. in due course.

Before WW2, the US quietly supported Japan in the war against China by providing her with the materials and resources for war, especially oil. In Germany, the rise of Hitler was almost certainly facilitated by the US so that Hitler can be used as cannon-fodder against Russia.
Today, the US is almost desperately looking for unwitting cannon-fodders against China. India is the most unwitting candidate, followed by Japan, Vietnam and Australia. The Philippines under Duterte was wise enough to opt out. The US knows it is not possible to “contain” China like she did the USSR. The geographical positions of the various available candidates to be the “spokes” of containment (the US will always safely be the “hub”) and their combined strength are not enough for the containment of China.
That leaves only the US WW2 strategy – to lure unwitting nations to war with China i.e. to be unwitting cannon fodder for the US. It is at least an 8 year strategy or less and the US seems to be making very good head-way with India. The Donglong stand-off was almost certainly a test-case designed by the Pentagon/CIA.
But if China is attacked, Russia under Putin is likely to help since if China falls (which is unlikely now even without Putin’s help), Russia will be next. And already Nato is making preparations to pressure Russia in Europe. So both Russia and China are now joined at the hips security-wise.
If the US don’t attack China through at least one of its cannon-fodder wannabes within 8 years’ time, the window of opportunity would pass. China after that will likely become far too powerful overall to even consider using a “cannon-fodder” against her. Example, India can then likely be neutralised even before she can launch her missiles. Also by then, the US navy can then likely be neutralised even before the aircraft carriers can set sail!
But Russia? She is fair game anytime and increasingly so except for the de-facto Sino-Russian alliance.
I can only add to Simon’s long note that, IMO, by 2025 AD Russia and China would have gained sufficient military strength to individually take on USA + NATO + Japan …

Almost every civilian infrastructure could be utilized for military purposes, especially the roads, rail-networks, deposit facilities, aerodromes, naval ports, etc. The EU has invested great amount of money for such infrastructures in the Eastern parts of the Europe. Good roads are an essential factor for an eventuality of military conflict while they are good for reaching out regions and biding them to the greater economical network, thus helping the development. You think all other cultures don’t have a history just as old? Or did you think all those ‘barbarians’ came dropping from the sky made out of cow poop? The fact that many may not have retained their original language, writing or alphabet during their journey through history doesn’t make those cultures less civilized, experienced or important. And don’t forget that on the ‘barbarian’s’ plus side was more intermingling than on the chinese side and thus less risk of inbreeding.
An example of ‘barbarians’: The peoples around the Black Sea made incredibly fine art and precious metal objects well over 6000 years ago and had refined cultures. Yes, Mundo is right, why should I write poems in German any more when I don’t even live there, making terrible spelling errors ? But are you instead Transylvanian Saxon,or Banat Swabian also.For your father to be in the German military,that would probably be the case. Since Romanian Germans during the war were allowed to join the German military instead of joining the Romanian Army.
Only my father was, my mother is Hungarian, her father was Armenian but he felt as being Romanian as I do. Actually, this kind of mixture was something as usual in Transsylvania. The same is in Serbia (Yugoslavia to be more precise) and also in Hungary. The old Monarchy is still living in this way.

“House Concurrent Resolution 81 (H.Con.Res.81) is sponsored by Representatives, Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), Walter Jones (R-NC), Mark Pocan (D-Wisc.), Thomas Massie (R-KY), and 39 other lawmakers. The resolution commands an end to U.S. participation in the Saudi-led war in Yemen.
The sponsors of this resolution contend that such participation, which began in March 2015, was never authorized under the War Powers Act of 1973. Per the War Powers Act, any congressman can pose a legal challenge and is guaranteed a floor vote on the issue. This is known as a privileged resolution.
On November 1st, the night before the vote was scheduled to take place, House leadership swiftly pushed through a Rules Committee vote, denying the resolution’s privileged status. Thus, preventing the guaranteed floor vote.
What was their justification? Apparently, the House Rules Committee feels that the war in Yemen has yet to ‘rise to a level’ where the War Powers Act is applicable.
After preventing the vote on H.Con.Res.81, the House Leadership has said it shall permit a ‘compromise’ resolution on the war in Yemen. The debate, scheduled for the week of November 13th, will discuss the legality of U.S. involvement in the war. The vote will be non-binding.
Five peace activist groups, heavily engaged in promoting the resolution, said just after the Rules Committee vote:
“We remind the House leadership that under the War Powers Resolution of 1973,
“‘introduction of United States Armed Forces ’includes the assignment of member of such armed forces to command, coordinate, participate in the movement of, or accompany the regular or irregular military forces of any foreign country or government when such military forces are engaged…’
U.S. refueling of Saudi-UAE planes bombing Houthi targets in Yemen meets that definition.’”
Therefore the War Powers Act, clearly applies to the war on Yemen.
The House leadership is lying to the American people, supporting the continuation of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, violating the War Powers Act, and attempting to prevent Congress from stopping yet another illegal and unconstitutional war.
Conservatively, since the beginning of 2017, at least 10,000 people have been killed in this war. The heroic and indispensable Yemeni journalist Nasser Arrabyee has said the toll could be as high as 60,000 deaths.”

The “Marshall Plan” for Ukraine, which was presented to the ambassadors of countries participating in the Eastern Partnership programme in the Seimas of Lithuania, envisages the allocation of aid in the amount of € 50 billion in the next decade, Delfi reports.
According to the Internet publication, these funds will be intended to encourage small and medium businesses.
As noted, Lithuanian diplomats and politicians are working to ensure that the plan is supported at the November summit of the Eastern Partnership of the European Union.
