Two articles on pollution issues. Declining insect and bird populations have been observed in, and around, our growing urbanite sprawls, both statistically and subjectively, for some time now: the first article suggests that pesticide use has primarily caused these declines, due to the industrial-style petrochemical farming methods used; the second article is a very relevant, but very ignored, call-to-arms, regarding one particular pesticide, but one that is used by everyone who uses brakes! Brake-pad copper-sulfate is a major poison, and the dust is everywhere, and the runoff, from the brake dust, is a contributing factor to the decline in insect populations, as described in the first article; but, why did they overlook copper-sulfate here? Because, in my mind, their is just too much going on, on this tiny planet, for any one person to wrap their noggin round! All of this, and made more challenging too, by a despicable void of advocates. It is, probably, realistic to assume, that the powerful personages of our planet are either depopulationists, or just downright deplorables.

Naive humanity is charming, but vulnerable. It understandably does not usually want to know or even seriously consider true institutional evil….and very frequently considers its greater depths…..like 9/11 most recently….”unthinkable”.

And the majority of human beings will procrastinate for years…or in most cases forever….in getting a good grip on reality and a good gander at how dark a place organized evil is…and whatever in hell generated it.

Evil is aware of this natural aversion to the Darkness and uses this instinctive shrinking away of the individual to its advantage to overwhelm the individual by corrupting his or her entire society with such degradation that any good remaining is atomized, isolated, discouraged, drained and (too often) broken and defeated….with the great majority of the ritual crime cementing the control never seen, never understood.

Such is the architecture of the Empire of Ego Run Amuck Against Creation and Creator Alike……..and it grows taller and stands more dominant…..until rejection of evil surges into the hearts and minds of humankind to the point that the individual considers civilization’s survival and further development infinitely more important than their own mortal life, in a world otherwise going straight to hell……unless the spirit rebels and rejects …The Descent Into The Abyss of Hell.

Dante Alighieri takes us on a little tour of what sort of descent to avoid:

“There is perhaps no more grisly scene in all the Inferno than Dante’s depiction of Ugolino eating the back of Ruggieri’s head like a dog using its strong teeth to gnaw a bone (Inf. 32.124-32; 33.76-8). Ugolino’s story, the longest single speech by one of the damned, is Dante’s final dramatic representation in the Inferno of humankind’s capacity for evil and cruelty. Aimed at explaining the scene of cannibalism in hell, Ugolino’s story is all the more powerful because the speaker makes no attempt to exonerate himself of the crime–political treachery–for which he is condemned to eternal damnation. He instead wishes to defame his enemy and elicit compassion from his audience by recounting the brutal manner in which he and his innocent children were killed.

Count Ugolino della Gherardesca earned his place in Antenora–the realm of political traitors–for a series of betrayals against Pisa and her political leadership. Dante mentions only the reputed act of treason that eventually led to Ugolino’s downfall: in an effort to appease hostile and powerful guelph forces in Tuscany, Ugolino ceded Pisan castles to Florence and Lucca in 1285 (Inf. 33.85-6). However, early commentators and chroniclers describe other–even more damning–examples of shifting allegiances and betrayals in the long political life of Count Ugolino. Born into a prominent ghibelline family in Pisa, Ugolino switched to the guelph side following their ascendancy in Tuscan politics and tried to install a guelph government in Pisa in 1274-5. Unsuccessful in this attempt, he was imprisoned and later exiled. In 1284, several years after his return, Ugolino led Pisan forces in a naval battle against rival Genoa; despite his defeat, Ugolino was elected podestà (political head) of Pisa and his guelph grandson, Nino Visconti, soon joined him in power as “captain of the people.” It was in this period that Ugolino, out of political expediency, ceded the Pisan castles to Lucca and Florence, a decision that caused a rift between him and his grandson and between their guelph followers. Taking advantage of resurgent ghibelline fortunes in Tuscany, Ugolino connived with the Pisan ghibellines, led by the Archbishop Ruggieri degli Ubaldini; Ugolino agreed to ghibelline demands that his grandson Nino be driven from the city, an order that was carried out–with Ugolino purposefully absent from the city–in 1288. The traitor, however, was then himself betrayed: upon Ugolino’s return to Pisa, Ruggieri incited the public against him (by cleverly exploiting Ugolino’s previous “betrayal of the castles”) and had the count–along with two sons (Gaddo and Uguiccione) and two grandsons (Anselmo and Brigata)–arrested and imprisoned. They were held in the tower for eight months until, with a change in the ghibelline leadership of Pisa, it was decided to nail shut the door to the tower and to throw the key into the Arno. They starved to death, as Dante’s Ugolino recalls, in a matter of days (Inf. 33.67-75).”

Bro, returning above ground: Ugolino evidently then ate them, according to most interpretations of Dante’s Divine Comedy, and his punishment was to forever gnaw on the back of Ruggiere’s head, while Ruggiere’s greater punishment (more at cause than Ugolino??) was to have his head be gnawed on, eternally.

Thinking on the Ontological Argument , from Apologia Pro Ortho Doxa

Here’s an ontological argument for the existence of a person with the capacities of omnipotence and omniscience. The latter means that He has all knowledge, the former means He is able to realize any coherent possible world. Cashing this out in terms of capacities is helpful, because it avoids two criticisms of the classical ontological argument. Aquinas points out that we cannot know God’s nature or essence, so that the only person who could make Anselm’s form of the ontological argument is God Himself, in which case it’s not very useful. If we think in terms of capacities, however, we can know that God has these capacities, in which case we can sidestep Aquinas’ argument.
Another common objection is the “perfect island” objection. If the ontological argument is sound, it entails that any perfect form of a thing necessarily exists. Thus, a maximally great island necessarily exists. The problem with this is that there are not intrinsic perfections belonging to an island. As Plantinga has put it, you could always add one more Nubian dancer. I think this problem actually gets at a deeper issue, which is that an island is neither a property or a substance. If we think in terms of properties or wholly actual substances, we’re going to start moving towards the argument from degrees and the argument from motion. But again, if we think in terms of capacities, we can sidestep this critique, since omniscience and omnipotence both have intrinsic maximums. To posit a person who possesses the capacities of omniscience and omnipotence is coherent in this way: there is a maximal amount of knowledge to be had.
So, without further ado, here it is. It’s very similar to Plantinga’s, but the warrant for Premise 2 is different, and along the lines of what I said last night. I’m going to say O/O rather than God just to avoid complications, though a person who has these capacities is clearly God.
1. If it is possible that O/O exists, then O/O exists in some possible worlds.
2. If O/O exists in some possible worlds, then O/O exists in all possible worlds.
3. If O/O exists in all possible worlds, then O/O exists in the actual world.
4. It is possible that O/O exists.
5. Therefore, O/O exists in the actual world.
6. Therefore O/O exists.
The key premises, of course, are two and four, and I’ll look at premise two first The way I’ll prove this is by demonstrating the impossibility of the contrary. The contrary is that there are some possible worlds where God exists and some where it does not. Now, omnipotence by definition means that the person in question has the capacity to actualize any possible world. The matrix of possible worlds simply derives from logical necessity, and is going to remain the same throughout. Thus, if there are some possible worlds where God exists and some where God does not exist, then, with the matrix of possibilities remaining the same, it entails that in the possible worlds where God does exist, God has the capacity to realize a possible world where He never existed. But this entails a self-contradiction, since for God to actualize a possible world requires Him to exist. Thus, to say “God exists in some possible worlds but not all possible worlds” entails a contradiction. Therefore, if God exists in some possible worlds, then God exists in all possible worlds.
As for premise one, I’ve done less thought on this, but the key point here seems to be that there is nothing intrinsically contradictory about a mind who possesses both the capacity to realize all possibilities and the knowledge of all things. Indeed, the former requires the latter, because for God to have the capacity to realize all possibilities, He must have comprehensive knowledge of the matrix of possibilities. The arguments here seem remarkably thin: one might try to suggest the so-called “omnipotence paradox.” This is a question like “Can God create a rock so heavy He can’t lift it?” Either way, God is not omnipotent, thus, omnipotence is necessarily possessed by no person. But a little reflection reveals that such a conclusion is merely the artifact of a poorly formed question. Essentially, it is: “Can an omnipotent person do a thing which an omnipotent person can’t do?” Such a question is intrinsically incoherent, and nobody should be surprised that it results in an incoherent answer. I don’t know if there are any philosophers who still defend this, but I see it popping up on the Internet sometime.
The other argument, a bit more famous, has to do with evil. If God has all perfections, and if goodness is a perfection, then the problem of evil entails that God cannot exist. What’s interesting to me about this objection is that it doesn’t demonstrate the existence of God to be incoherent, only that it is incompatible with evil. Thus, as far as the formal logic of the ontological argument goes, the ontological remains sound. If both the ontological argument and the problem of evil were sound, it would entail a host of odd conclusions, such as “evil is an illusion” or “the present world is not the real world” or even “those minds who experience suffering do not actually exist.” We’d like to avoid such conclusions, but here I’m making the point that the problem of evil doesn’t deal with the ontological argument as such, only the existence of God with respect to what is apparently the actual world. Most critiques of the problem of evil suggest that there is some possible world where God has a morally sufficient reason for allowing each act of evil that He does. All one needs to prove here is that the concept of a “morally sufficient reason for allowing evil” is coherent, and also that the possibility where God has such reasons for actual evil is coherent. The former can be demonstrated in parenting: it is ethical for a parent to allow a child to make mistakes in order to bring about a greater good. So the concept of a morally sufficient reason is coherent, the naturalist needs to argue that there aren’t any such morally sufficient reasons for actual evil in the world: but proving that would be tough. How does he know? Without comprehensive knowledge, it doesn’t seem that he could know. As far as an argument for the logical incoherence of God with respect to the actual world, it fails. If one tries to formulate it as a probabilistic argument, it still fails, since the ontological argument is not probabilistic, but necessary. As such, it defeats any probabilistic argument if it is sound.
But let’s say that the problem of evil is perfectly sound. The form of the ontological argument I’ve developed above actually doesn’t have anything to say about perfections as such. All it deals with is the concept of an omnipotent, omniscient mind. And as we saw, omnipotence entails omniscience. So really, we’re talking about a person with the capacity to realize any possible world. If the argument from evil is successful, it would demonstrate God to be “beyond good and evil” but not nonexistent.

History through New Eyes , from, Apologia Pro Ortho Doxa

We say that God called Israel in order to be a light to the nations and to prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ. However, usually when one gets into the details of how Israel functioned in this fashion, things become murky. Many accounts simply state that Israel, by and large, failed in her vocation so that Israel’s election devolves onto Jesus Christ who finally accomplishes it. There is a sense in which this is true, but it is not the whole truth. Israel’s election was in fact fundamental in preparing the world for the coming of Christ. The only way that one will see this, however, is by taking off the secular glasses given to us by conventional academia and seeing ancient history through new eyes.
The two foundations for seeing history through Christian eyes are the following:
1. Religion. Monotheism, not polytheism, is the earliest religion of humankind, not merely Israel. God made a covenant with Noah in Genesis 9. That covenant is bifurcated into Noahic and Abrahamic forms in Genesis 15. Israel lives under the Abrahamic form of the old covenant, the nations live under the Noahic form of the old covenant. But they are both in covenant with God, and the Noahic covenant is not a covenant of “common grace” but rather a covenant which establishes terms of relationship with God. The nations will establish states with the duty to execute God’s justice. They will be headed by a king entrusted with the mandate of God, the first of which is Father Noah himself. As with Noah, the king simultaneously will function as the head of the cult devoted to the one true God. This is why, throughout the ancient world, virtually all Gentile nations have priest-kings. It is only in the Abrahamic form of the old covenant that priesthood and kingship are divided from one another by divine law.
We are so used to thinking of “Gentile polytheism” and “Hebrew monotheism” that we fail to recognize the one true God in other ancient cultures. According to Daniel and Reveation, the Gentile name for God is the “God of Heaven.” It is no accident, therefore, that the high god in other cultures is very frequently associated with the sky or sun, as the Lord is in Scripture. Moses tells us that the Lord “shines” on us, the Psalmist asks who “in the skies is like the Lord?” The high god of the Roman state is Jupiter, meaning literally “Sky-Father.” We might call this the “Heavenly Father.” The high God of China was Shang-Ti, or “The Emperor of Heaven.” The high god of ancient Egypt is Amun, the “Hidden One.” He is associated with Re, the sun. The high god is a sky-god.
It is undoubtedly the case that these religions very often decayed, in two different ways. Sometimes the high god became more and more distant, so that people would relate to him only through lower gods. This is what happened in ancient China. Shang-Ti became the god of the king, and only the king related directly to him. The rest of the people used magic and prayed to other gods, while recognizing that the Supreme God, the Creator, was Shang-Ti. Another way religion decayed was through making the Creator God more anthropomorphic. This is what happened in the Near East. El is the high God of the Near Eastern world (and this is what the Lord God is called by Gentiles in Scripture), but later in history, he is understood as becoming drunk at feasts, he is depicted, and he fathers children sexually. The same is undoubtedly true with Jupiter (Heavenly Father) and Zeus in Rome and Greece.
We thus understand that all nations had priest-kings, temples, covenants, and sacrifice, because this is part of God’s world, and they all operate under the Noahic covenant, whether in apostasy or in faithfulness.
2. Chronology. The conventional chronology of the ancient world serves to displace God and God’s people from the center of history. The exodus and conquest was a minor event, exaggerated by the biblical authors. Israel was a small, powerless nation with little cultural influence outside of its own borders. Abraham and the patriarchs were wandering nomads. It is no wonder that when we learn biblical history in this fashion, it appears that Israel never really did much as light to the world. I’ve often said that it’s absurd to try to prove biblical history without submitting to the biblical chronology. Given the biblical date for the Flood of 2274 BC, about five-thousand years of history needs to be compressed into two-thousand years. This is a very difficult task, because folding history into its proper place requires a high degree of precision, whereas creating massive historical periods provides much wiggle room to use for fragmentary evidence.
However, it is only within this framework that we will truly understand the Scriptures. The Egyptian Old and Middle Kingdoms are actually concurrent, ad the Egyptian New Kingdom must be moved downwards by about five centuries, so that its birth coincides with the birth of the Israelite monarchy. Consequently:
1. Pre-Dynastic period: From Babel to about the middle of Abraham’s life.
2. Old/Middle Kingdoms: From Abraham to the exodus. App. 430 years.
3. Dark Age: Hyksos/Amalekites conquer Egypt because of its destruction by the plagues. Period of the judges. App. 400 years.
4. New Kingdom: Pharaoh Ahmose enters into a marriage alliance with King Saul (married to the daughter of Ahimaaz), expels the Hyksos/Amalekites from Egypt, and Saul wipes them out, as recorded in 1 Samuel 15. Lasts to about the end of the Israelite monarchy.
What we see here, on a dramatically revised chronology, is that Egypt’s history correlates with changes in Israel’s history. Whenever God remolds the clay of Israel- the center of the human race- He likewise remolds the ancient world.
Let’s take this further.
(Psalm 105:16-22) When he summoned a famine on the land and broke all supply of bread, he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave. His feet were hurt with fetters; his neck was put in a collar of iron; until what he had said came to pass, the word of the Lord tested him. The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free; he made him lord of his house and ruler of all his possessions, to bind his princes at his pleasure and to teach his elders wisdom.
The Psalmist here informs us that Joseph, while in Egypt, taught the Egyptian elders wisdom. According to the book of Genesis, Joseph was a “wise and discerning man.” Within the framework of a dramatically revised chronology, Joseph is the historical person behind the Egyptian figure of “Imhotep” a supremely wise man, a father of medicine and philosophy, an architect, and the man who saved Egypt from a seven-year famine. Conventional historians note in response to this connection that salvation from a seven year famine is a frequent literary motif throughout the ancient world, and is not to be considered historical. But let us ask ourselves: why is it such a frequent motif? I submit that, per Genesis, the famine was across the face of the whole world. After the Flood, the climate still rocked back and forth. For the first few centuries, it was very wet and rainy, with the oceans having been increased in temperature by over twenty degrees celsius, thus generating additional rain. As temperature decreased, we have a short Ice Advance. Then, within ten years (this is based on computer modeling), the climate suddenly rocks essentially its present position. The Sahara Desert is born. This is why famine after famine happens in Genesis, and why there is a massive famine at the end of the book. The tradition of a seven-year famine is a historical memory of the climactic chaos present for the first centuries after the Flood.
Imhotep is the memory of Joseph. David Rohl has pointed out an area within the land of Goshen with a pyramid, a palace, and a colossal statue of a Semite vizier wearing a robe of many colors. In this same location, there are twelve other tombs. This is plainly Joseph and his twelve brothers. This is conventionally dated to the Middle Kingdom, but ancient historians recorded a period of rule by the “Council of Twelve” in the Old Kingdom. Integrating the two kingdoms brings the evidence together. Clearly, Joseph had a great influence on Egyptian civilization.
Joseph was a philosopher. He taught the Egyptians wisdom, medicine, technology, and philosophy. Josephus tells us that when Abraham went into Egypt (it is essential to remember that Abraham is a prince, not a nomad), he taught Pharaoh astronomy. In other words, what God is doing is using Israel to seed the ancient world with philosophy and culture.
Later in history, around the birth of the Egyptian New Kingdom, we discover a flourishing of Egyptian culture and wisdom literature. The cult of Egypt is focused on the person of Amun-Re, whom I have identified above with the one true God. On a revised chronology, this is the early Israelite monarchy, and the flourishing of culture, wisdom, and piety correlates with King Solomon, who taught the world wisdom. Josephus tells us that the queen of Sheba was the “queen of Egypt and Ethiopia”, and the traditional Ethiopian name for the queen is almost identical to the throne name of the famous Hatshepshut. Damien Mackey has argued that Hatshepshut’s chief advisor, Senenmut, ought to be identified with King Solomon, under the spelling of “Shelemoth.”
Solomon is a New Joseph, another great philosopher, and we see that God through Israel again seeds the ancient world with philosophy and culture.
The Greeks said that they received their philosophy from the Egyptians. If this is the case, then the Greeks ultimately received philosophy, as the Fathers declared, from the great Hebrew philosophers- chief among them Joseph and Solomon.
Let me make one final point. The Greeks recall a great lawgiver, Solon, who began as a wise king but gradually came to enslave his people. It is at least plausible, given the similarity of both the name and the narrative, that this is a Hellenized tradition about King Solomon. Furthermore, the Greeks recall that Solon spent a significant amount of time in Egypt.
