This can’t be just about shutting the economy down again? Albeit in current conditions, it may be preferable to cool passions, such as recently expressed by German War Minister AKK47 (an apt nickname).

Isn’t the over reliance on technology an age old problem? Forster was merely the latest in long line of keen observers.
Machines are means to an end, to streamline and leverage processes, reduce drudgery, and increase profit. In that sense men were among first ancient technology to other (elite) men, like a crude Duracell battery.

As civilization matures (sips from decadence), then ripens, then over-ripens (decadence fully indulged), the perspective, skills, optimism and can-do are lost. Of course. What happens is, speaking metaphysically, the machine, being unnatural, despises life and wishes to die. The machine is malevolent. Some machines are diabolical. All machines make evil seem like good, thus creating delusion in “man” (any critter), and dependence…and belief, even worship as a false god (as the story implies the only book was the machine’s bible, or operating manual.) There are at least two classes of machines. Being an old veteran of trade-crafts I favor the simple machine – the forge and leather belt and coal and non CNC machines. I even have some I’ve saved. But even these machines can bite. They require apt and crafty skill to keep them at bay and servile, and happy. That said, I have no objection to electricity, within reason. Or radio – but I prefer analogue vacuum tube circuits…

Kookaburra, written in 1932 by Marion Sinclair.
She said it “wasn’t hers”, and had been gifted to her by God.

When Marion died kookaburra was bought from her estate.
The American parent of the company copyright holder then proceeded to insist on royalties for use of kookaburra.
This had tragic consequences for band Men at Work, who had inadvertently used a sample of kookaburra in the flute portion of Down Under.
Every Australian who’d inflicted a recorder rendition of kookaburra on their family, or at a school concert, kinda knew the flute riff was “familiar”. The notes were embedded in Australian DNA.
The US company claimed 60percent of Men at Work royalties. After a long and nasty lawsuit, which enraged every Australian, the US company prevailed, and ended up with about 5% of proceeds from “Down Under”.
The lawsuit took a huge toll on band members, with one succumbing to health issues, and another band member’s father (who had been heavily involved in the early years) also dying from the stress. (and white hot anger at the injustice).

So, that was my understanding until I read about ‘flaming datum’, and oh heavens that made sense, not conceptually only, but viscerally.

Thank you, Sudhi, for posting the link to this most beautiful song. It is tinged with the sadness of small but unique cultures who sense their way of life is on the way to extinction. There is a sense of foreboding as the unnamed enemy or oppressor in the lyric – or in any case, the personification of “the shadow”, which we discussed a few Cafes back, as “the monster” – bears down upon the gentle and harmless everyday folk.
It brought to mind this equally beautiful song from my own native culture, Macedonia. Today, Macedonia is ridiculed by all of its neighbours and the world at large, people who want first from Macedonia’s rich heritage and who have then crafted their historiographies to suit their politics. Vladimir Putin is one of the few world leaders who has shown nothing but respect and knowledge of the true contribution to world culture from the Macedonian people, and that is why I have the utmost respect for him.

You once asked for me to be the light, when you yourself are one and have have helped many, including me, in their troubled times. Perhaps, God has given you broad shoulders so that you may bear this burden. In India Basil has been worshiped since time immemorial, it is filled with medicinal properties and produces oxygen even in the night. And cloves are often used as a spice to add taste to a dish.

For whatever reason, every time I look at photos of buildings in any given Japanese city (could be Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, etc.), I somehow cannot stop thinking of my childhood in Xiamen, Fujian province in China (my family moved to the US in November 2005). This applies even to buildings built after 2005.
On a similar note, the same nostalgic feeling gets triggered when I gleam through the illustrations of a Japanese children’s book, screenshots of a Japanese TV program for children, etc.. Most if not all of these I never encountered at all living in China, either because they were never distributed there, let alone translated, or because they were released after 2005. Why this feeling exists with Japanese children’s media, and not that of other countries, is a mystery to me, and it’s been something I’ve tried to isolate.
(Then again, during my childhood I did familiarize myself with various non-Japanese IPs such as Bob the Builder, Thomas the Train Engine, and various Disney IPs, so certain elements thereof may overlap.)
What’s really strange is that, not only have I not been to Japan ever in my life, but looking at photos of Xiamen on the internet and at Baidu Maps’ Street View, the infrastructure today hardly looks like anything you’d find in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, etc. if at all. I can barely even remember what the infrastructure in Xiamen looked like in 2005 such that this nostalgia would even come up in the first place. Even visiting Xiamen again in September 2015 did nothing to dispel the association.
Apparently nostalgia for a place one has never been to is hardly a new phenomenon, so I guess I’m not alone. Anyone else have something similar?
Well, we’re built up of materials that are not created for creating us, but are taken from rubble lying around (or perhaps orderly and painstakingly preserved for the holy moment when exactly you would demand entrance to life on earth) and are recycled. The same, uh, something similar may happen… seems to happen (as your feelings and those reported by others seem to suggest) with the non-material material going into us: the Soul, the intellect, preferences for *this* but definitely not *that* etc.. You’ll find plenty of such allegations in literature, once you look for them (Goethe indulged in such).
In sum: yes, it seems the way this place is run, and the decisive thing (with this and others) is not, whether “oh my God, it *really* exists…!”, but what you then make of it. You discovered your Japanese roots and can now suppress (but never delete) them or accept and use and support them – but what would that mean to *you* – “japanese” meaning different things for different people, e.g. in your relatives, your audience. Is being “in reality” japanese something good, according to you, or not etc, etc. And this will only be the beginning…
I for instance, am pestered throughout my life by single “famous” people (there are millions of them, famous for this or that, nothing to brag about) who absolutely must at least once have a look at me in a way were I cannot ignore that, against all odds, this is what is just happening… usually understood by me only a while later. Why are *these* doing *this*, trying to achieve with this what? Since it’s always done in a “secret” manner, always an unprobable event, I tried and try to understand, beginning with associating “secret” meetings using “secret” methods with “secret” … uh, “services” (or probably rather masters) – do they want to recruit me? Aren’t there easier and safer ways to do that… try that…? In a collection of fairy tales you may find unwanted (“natural”?) children that should not stand in the way of … once they have reached the age to claim their heritage (say, ruling the kingdom or such), loyal followers of TPTB get an explicit order but detect a heart in themselves and do not kill the thing off but let some “lower” folks raise it as one of theirs… ok: am I a king’s/queen’s product? I found nothing supporting that possibility… and no other plausible one. So, when once at a Volksfest in Treptower Park at a commie booth promoting a commie paper I heard the fellow next to me mentioning his former high rank in the shtazee, I asked him whether I was allowed to ask him something (yes, what is it?), and then: why do such services do such things? He thought about it for some seconds, then said, he never heard of such a thing and has no idea why this should be done. Yes, I thought, indeed, in the terrible commie East I was never ever pestered with this nonsense, but again and again in our bloody shitty famous West. Haven’t been there meself for a while, when I was working I had lots of time, on someone else’s dime, to net surf. Alas, all time now is mine (wife may differ) so I’m more judicious with were it’s spent.
Trying to settle in, find a routine, have heard lots of stories of people retiring or retiring early then checking out shortly there after. Not part of my plan atm, I’ll defer to God, take my ‘meds’, say some prayers and see where the road to salvation leads me.

(2) huge natural resources, even with South Sudan severed
(3) until recently was largest country in Africa & among top 25 most populated countries in world
(4) for millennia, Sudan along w other horn of Africa nations provide most livestock meat to barren Arabian peninsula (so way to control food chain of Arabs)
