I usually don’t like posting about anecdotic things, as they are mostly irrelevant.

As there is a big information blackout in Europe, some necdtic first hand experiences are fine.
I just had the occasion to meet yesterday too young ladies, family of a friend of mine, that were studying in Kiev.
Here is they journey and what they told me.
They are from north Africa, there is a trend there, from middle class families, to send children to Ukraine to study, as it is cheaper.
University professors in Ukraine get crap poor salares, even lower than in poor third world countries.
One of the ladies was in a faculty with almost no abroad students, do she had the same treatment as native Ukrainian students. The other however, was in a faculty with lots of Arabic students, and professors asked bribes. Not to falsify results, but simply if students didn’t pay extra unofficial and illegal fees, they would be punished at the exam. Everybody knew about that.
As for language, courses we’re officially in Ukrainian, but all spoken language was exclusively in Russian, be it in the faculty or outside (in shop etc). Even after respectively two and three years in Kiev, they had no grasp of the Ukrainian language.
They also told me a picture of lawlessness and wide corruption in Kiev, with not uncommon occurrences of kidnapping of students from supposedly wealthy backgrounds (le from Kuwait) for ransom. When caught, the criminals just paid the police and we’re free. “If you have Oney you can do what you want in Ukraine” one of the girls told me textually.
When the war broke up, they had the intellince to get out quickly, as such they avoided getting trapped as a lot of foreign students still are.
At first they planed to go to Poland, but then learned of the complete chose at the border, with a 40km long traffic jam (people hd to walk all the way); and Ukrainian border guards beating foreign students.
So at the advice of their embassy they took the way of Hungary.
It took them two days to cross the border by bus, due to the complete ack of control from Ukrainian authorities. Hungary polie even crossed the border to rescue some Hungarian buses (they were surrounded by people in panic, making it possible to advance).
The only place were they were truly frightened was in Lvov, due to their lack of mastery of Ukrainian language the local polie ir something (they had uniforms and guns) were very aggressive, they spoke very fast and it was impossible for the two girls to communicate, the thighs were mad that they spoke to them in Russian.
Thanks to a local lady they were able to get out, and she helped them to get into a bus to the border
Once in the Austria Germany border, they were taken out of the train by the local police, as they were not Ukrainian. But thanks to family living in Italy they were able to continue their travel as they convinced the German authorities that their goal was not to settle in Germany.
They don’t know if they would be able to continue their studies this year. They plan to go back once the situation is pacified.
They have mostly a neutral view on the situation, they regret there are actual combat, but express that it is matter for Russia and Ukraine to sove between them.
They have lived in the capital in a foreign students bubble. That is, in what was probably the safest environment. Yet some ugly things still permeates (like the abject poverty and moral decay, couption, lawlessness). And the very few glimpse they had of western Ukraine was quite bad.
Thanks for the anecdote. This is a recurring nightmare for tens of thousands of students. It featured in a telephone call between Putin and Modi last week (~1,500 trapped Indian students) as well as between VVP and Macron (who was supposed to broker their exit).
This entire callous behavior of Nazi regime (not merely racism but extending civilian human shields to foreigners) has been huge PR disaster and blowback. Most of Asia and Africa is aware and upset.. so in week 1, the orcs lost much of the media war among 1/2 humanity due to this barbarity of keeping students hostage and treating them so roughly.

But here are a few relevant reasons thousands of middle and upper-class Africans, Indians and other Asians send their beloved kids to Ukraine. And always keep in mind, those are the classes sending those kids. Not the kids of goat-herds, which do not even own passports.
(1) Ukraine until a generation ago was the crème of the Soviet republics.. Highest standards, QOL, desirable not-as-cold location.. But it takes a while for the current reality to percolate down to folks. And entire Western MSM hid nature of NAZI/NATO takeover
(2) Soviet educational system was/is first-rate. I had many of my older relatives trained in USSR in military sciences, etc.. my mother could type in Cyrillic in the 1970s on standard type-writers. This is still ingrained in African/Indian/Asian cultures to seek knowledge in former Soviet republics.
(3) Very practical skills can be taught that are desperately needed back home – engineering, medicine and all sciences, management, military sciences, etc.. Mothertrucker, folks in Africa and India do not live in caves with bones in their noses you nkow.. Stop believing Asterix & Obelix is current.. Sincere learners always move to acquire the knowledge where they can. There is neither enough higher educational capacity nor expertise in certain areas, and they still want to maintain a modern city and life for their people.
(4) For the elite niches, in some cultures, the “internationally-certified” degree is all that counts. Not the knowledge. For example, a South Korean friend of mine pined for getting into an ivy league medical school as it would immediately result in a salary over $1 million (mid 1990s). That is the way corruption and prestige works in the colonies too.. and so on

Bone meal, powered milk (expensivist here) and Epsom salts are all recommended, helps the flower set, helps end blossom end rot….a bit hmm, yucky, but human urine is also used…(old school,) hey fertilizer is fertilizer.
You didn’t mention the type of mold…fungus, or black spot on bottom, or some other?

Mulch your tomatoes. The spores from any number of tomato pathogens become endemic to your soil. Mulch them well, and the rain won’t spash the spores right onto the tender young receptive leaves. And of course move them around your garden – crop rotation is a thing, a useful thing.
Thanks my friend. We are in tropical conditions and a tropical rain storm does not splash. It takes everything away. For the kitchen garden, I grow in a modified Hugelkultur – because, in the traditional hugelkultur, the rain washes the whole mound away. So, mine is dug down deep, trees and tree cuttings and trimmings fill the hole, and then on top of that heaps and heaps of compost and we have three compost piles going all the time in summer.
The tropics are really different. We have to live with the tropical conditions and the forest. The forest does all the mulching we need, if we let it.
Anyway, for climate, what is planted now is in .. We plant again toward the end of September. The Jamaica Tea looks good, but it is always good, and the Sesame also looks good so far. I so love harvesting that stuff. We cut them, hang ’em upside down in bags and they really go pop.

A very revealing statement about the tomato plant, I don’t know he science, but do know that like potatoes, the soil if not carefully managed may effect other plants grown later in the same place. Tomato’s love the heat, and grow well in cow d’s something about the nature of this plant.
Despite their use as a vegetable, they are in fact a fruit that grows on the vine..Though interestingly, or funnily, in 1893, the United States Supreme Court legally declared that tomatoes are vegetables, (after a case of a farmer and the differences of tax between importing fruits and vegetables.)
Their seeds are the fruit defining agent, displaying the the plant’s inherent role as assistive in reproductive process.
They are according to certain health and nutrition advice, better not consumed by those with cancer, or deemed with the possibility of getting cancer forming tumors of some kind.

Hi Sean, this is a very specific tropical and local thing, because of the high humidity when the fruits are ripening. The fruits are fine, the plant gets a black furry mold on the stems and the leaves even and cannot support the fruits for too long. Nothing that we’ve done (non chemical) has helped. I’m sure there is a Spanish name for it, I just cuss it and never learned the name. No connection with soil quality, I can pee on them all I like which we do lol, compost is excellent, but the high humidity is the problem. Fruit is good if I can carry through the plant itself. But who wants to eat fruit from a black furry moldy plant?. So, I just pick green tomatoes.
Thing is, we have one variety that we can carry through the season. But they are like weeds really. They give us a good and long-duration harvest but they also at the end of the day mold and I pull the plants and put them in a very hot compost and buy fresh seed. People think me crazy for even trying in the humidity. The small (bigger than a grape but smaller than a cherry) carries us through the season. Here they are and they are weeds literally. They grow like weeds. I once staked a bunch of these up and what a sorry sight lol – a staked up leggy weed garden. I just leave them to crawl because they are prolific.

It is a local climatic condition here and I don’t think it is one of the nomal tomato problems. Its climate and I’m hard-headed. But soon I’ll have some tomato trees bearing fruit if I can get them pruned fast enough. We actually need to take a drive to the tree provider and just replant most everything. Yeah gods … Covid messed up the farming side of our lives. Next I want to try to grow some watermelon like the Japanese .. in a cube.

Very interesting, furry food hmm not good. Plant science, finding varieties more mold resistant if possible. Get seeds from other climes to experiment with… sucks to get them so close to eat and then… compost, the end rot is our biggest battle. Still under feet of snow here, fresh tomatoes…dreaming.

The inter-relations between fungi and plants astonished me when I read Paul Stamets’ fungi perfecti stuff.
I don’t want to flog any site or products.
Evidently many plants thrive with a symbiotic endophilic fungi…it may be that such “infection” conveys some immunity to other fungi… just a thought. Stamets goes into this stuff…been years since I read him.

I can recommend Paul Stamets for his life work on fungi. I have used some of his techniques for growing mushrooms in the past. He used to be one of the foremost experts in making the growing of fungi available to the common home dweller.

All tomatoes were small grape sized fruit at one time. Cross breading over many years led to the big horkin beasties we can grow today. It doesn’t surprise me that the small bush type do better in that type of climate. Maybe a more heritage type variety.

I grow different varieties in pots, last year five different kinds, all with different growing habits and sizes and more. There was some problem with fungi I never experienced before…
@m-trucker, the serious bad boys are bindweed, virtually eradicable, and some types are hallucinogenic, interesting… their white soft roots grow up through other dense, root system’s to allow support for growth, height etc.
Generally plants classified as weeds have healing attributes, others are good for the soil etc, and I never had major problems with any of them, love, time, energy, rain and sun !
Other problems always with vigorous, introduced plants growing wild unchecked,and choking natural habitats..
My eyes look like tomatoes. I’ve been through every tropical tomato site in this world. They all say .. stay with the small grapes and cherries. The issue is bigger than just humidity – it is also the solar UV. So when that reaches a certain level, you have to pull over the solar shades. But, tomatoes love sun, so you have to keep them open in the mornings usually.
So, just too much hassle.
I’ll buy salad and sauce tomatoes and just keep a few of our small little cherries growing just for fun.
But, it was not a wasted season for me. I got the garlic taped! Put the seed garlic in the fridge for 4 to 6 weeks and cheat them into thinking they’ve been through cold winter and be very precise when planting. It worked – they actually sprouted right in the fridge in their container. It’s not that I can take ’em to a farmer’s market in terms of quality, but for kitchen use .. not too shabby – I can even do a little garlic braid. But no garlic scapes which is just a thing that I think is a miracle.
We have so many beautiful things growing here. I have fresh ginger root already. Rule one of gardening is to grow what grows already before one goes nuts and tries things with what are exotics for the area. The few years of experimentation of tomatoes will be my lesson of keeping humble. One can be very clever, but you cannot win nature.
