Since then it has came to light that they were involved in the JFK murder, and that sent the signal to every politician to obey. Speaking of thinking machines…both self-programming machines and programmed machines are primarily complex networks of sorts of switches…bilzillions of ’em. When these are electronic and very dense we speak of microprocessors and so on…but very large distributed thinking machines are possible. They “live” at a very slow rate…mats of mycelia for example. People act as complex switching nodes in such a construct. Therefore can we regard “society” as a life-form that thinks and acts very slowly? The natural universe seems to tell us that a “Society-machine” would follow the pattern of life…and after a long time, an Nth society machine would die. Or, if we take a step further away, is the Earth host to a vast thinking machine, of which any “society” is just an expendable part – disposed of when the machine decides to jettison an incompatible diseased part of itself?

It seems, more or less as I said, that the posited global (slow) thinking machine satisfies the open system aspect…meantime De gustibus non est disputandum… Many proofs have fallen. It’s perhaps significant that the semantic value of the term “machine” has, since the time of esteemed Dr G in the 1930’s, changed. I have long used this term in a broad sense. Voltaire, as example, used it to mean automatic…like a mechanical clock – a very small concept. I would speculate that if a soul exists it is part of a vast machine. I find considerable absurdity in some of Voltaire’s ideas.
It would be, no doubt, wonderful to conjure up their ghosts, old François, Norbert and Kurt, invite them to after-dinner conversation…no doubt the misc en scene would include blackboards and chalk! The feat of the defenders of Mariupol in 2022 was a shock for the whole world. In this fierce resistance to the Russian occupation, different peoples of the world saw parallels with different episodes of their own history, comparing the Ukrainian heroes of the present with their heroes of the past. All of them were united by one thing – an uncompromising, sometimes doomed struggle for their independence. The rank of people who, in the battle for their freedom, sacrifice everything, permeates the whole story. It is her main nerve.
In southern Israel, near the city of Arad, Masada rises, a fortress that has been a symbol of resistance to foreign occupation for Jews for 2000 years.
In 66 AD Judea has been under the occupation of Rome for many years. The rebel Jews from the zealot movement capture Masada, where the Roman garrison was located. After that, the fortress became the base of the Sikarias, the most radical wing of the zealots.
In A.D. 70, when the Romans took Jerusalem, completely destroying the city and the Second Temple, Masada became the main bastion of the rebellious Jews. 1000 men (including women and children) for 3 years restrained the Roman siege. These events are described by an eyewitness and participant in the war with the Romans, Josephus, in his book The Jewish War.
In the end, the Roman troops managed to break through the defensive fortifications of the fortress. One of the leaders of the Sikarias, Elazar ben-Yair, appealed to the defenders of Masada and their families to kill each other so as not to fall into the hands of the Romans. The last of the sicarians, who survived, set fire to the fortress, and then also killed himself.
The Romans captured Masada, but they could not subjugate the rebellious Jews who fought for freedom.
And when today in Israel we talk about the defense of Mariupol, the Israelis, understanding, first of all, the military differences of the war of 2000 years ago and today, constantly repeat: “Mariupol is your Masada.”
And we will definitely go back there.

I was in Yemen recently. I learned two interesting stories which confirms the trend in Jewish history. When a fatalistic splinter group enters the zealot stage, they are capable of extraordinary deeds. And they are often egged-on by treacherous allies to suicide themselves too, in the pursuit of fighting a common enemy.
(1) the first story was several centuries after Masada. A Jewish king in Yemen had an apprentice magician (a boy really) who became a Christian believer and did miracles.. the king who passionately hated Christians tried to kill him but could not. The boy told him to gather the people and gave him the means to kill him (by invoking the name of the Lord). He was martyred but at the cost to the king that most of the people entered the faith of the enemy. He was enraged and built a ditch for them in which to be burned, like the Babylonians had tried to burn the Patriarch Abraham. The condemned people remained resolute and entered the ditch. One lactating woman hesitated, for her infant. A miracle occurred then, only repeated two other times in human history: the babe in her arms spoke and enjoined her to enter the fire and not to lose the waiting reward.
The story has relevance to this day for two reasons: first, it is recorded in the 85th chapter of the Qur’an. Second, a Yemeni man complained to his coreligionist Roman Emperor in Constantinople. The outraged Roman sent a letter to the nearest Christian kingdom, which happened to be in Abyssinia. The Negus (king) of Abyssinia then sent an army into Yemen to expunge the evil king who had dug the trench. However Yemenis of all creeds to this day regret the entire episode for more prosaic reasons. This issue opened the door to their long occupation and vassalage to Abyssinia. I forget the exact words, but that man who complained to the Roman emperor has as little wider regard as certain men in Greek history, such as the Spartan traitor Ephialtes.
(2) the second story concerns another Jewish tribe at the time of the Islamic Prophet in his own city. This is rough outline of the story, although wiki lies of the reason for their expulsion. (whoever has authentic version, pl share) They broke their covenant, tried to assassinate the leader, etc… They lived in some of the best lands and strongholds which could survive long siege. Yet their hearts quailed and crumbled and they gave up and ended up dismantling their amazing fortresses, brick by brick with their own hands, rather than surrender them. Didn’t Azov surrender at the bitter end too, and after causing the leveling of the entire city? Banu Nadir was allowed to flee with only what they could carry on their many beasts of burden. This story is captured in the 59th Chapter of the Qur’an.
So yes, the scenes of Mariupol should repeat and are repeating on even larger canvasses, and often by the spiritual inheritors of the same end-stage madness. Yet not all this madness is evil – some is clearly divinely inspired with good intentions, such as the believers making the ultimate sacrifice in the Ditch. And we remember Russians calling airstrikes on themselves, generals entering fire-pockets to lead, etc. What appears to differ is intentionality. The good have hopes of a long feast afterwards and accept what comes in this fallen and ephemeral world. The evil are carried on by false hopes, rumour, drugs, delirium and rank hatreds. And when they see they have utterly lost they tend to quit and wish to take all down with them if they can.

Interesting stories, for which I am in your debt. I imagine my Rabbi friend would have known these. He was older than I…maybe he’s living…Qur’an and the commentary stories are on my bucket list. I’ll follow the bread-crumbs…
In the US and in my youth the trivial Jewish holiday of Hanukkah was celebrated as a sort of Christmas in juxtaposition…and for a time I was one of the few Gentiles among about 2,000 Ashkenazim and Sephardim, with many Slavic “Russian” Jews all a-mixed. Anyway, the celebrations were far in excess of the significance of the holiday – with dramatic recitations and plays and song and so forth, and thus indoctrination. I liked the show, and the girls were pretty too. On the real Jewish holidays we few Gentiles haunted an empty school and were sent to read in the library, perhaps 20 of us.
The back story, which you probably know, is that Hanukkah celebrates the victory of one party over another in a Jewish civil war…Maccabees and all that. (although if called upon to give a talk I’d want to re-read and prepare notes…)
Rabbi used to say, if there are 2 Jews there will be 3 opinions… A fractious people. I have a distant relationship to a boy raised by the Chief Rabbi of Frankfurt AM, about 1620 I think…obviously the boy’s mother was Jewish. That line continues to-day, in Kansas, and they are Christians in the ways of Kansas, and they do not know the story… Similarly, with respect to African line about 1700…when the Quakers freed their slaves. ( many forget that slavery in the US included the native peoples and Europeans as well as Negroes…and it continues to-day cloaked in legalistic tripe, racism is only a part of this, it’s mostly just the way a nazi gang actually works.) But the definition seems to beg the question of perspective…which seems also amusing.
Longtimeago I worked a steam turbine job that may illustrate> 1) operators failed to maintain lube oil chemistry. Oil coked ’round the high pressure (hot!) end, causing seal failure, spreading and soaking the insulation – operators ignored the oil leak, turbine house filled with smoke, which eventually ignited spontaneously with a low grade explosion – which distorted the housing, a multi-part steel bolted together “house” perhaps 20 x 45 feet. Then the operators shut down… (hp steam “seals” are not like the seals from cars, they’re “labyrinths” – essentially gas-friction arrangements)
The contractor brought us together at dusk in freezing rain…we worked 12 hours and turned it over to the day shift…but then, back at the farm in the post I learned that our wage was fraudulently based on a “maintenance contract rate” ,,, returning that next evening I spread this news, in freezing rain and wetted soot. The crew picked up their tools and went home, leaving the machine all alone, sooted and torn apart, in the icy night. “Wait! Come back” somebody cried in the darkness…and the faint reply, “Phuckyou”, was heard.
I could go on, but that’s enough to ask> Who found the lost productivity? The operators never missed a dime. The owner’s view would be that he had lost “income” and found expense – even though it had been his choices that created the “casualty”. But let’s say true – his greed motivated “his” operators to fubar by indifference and neglect the machine, create a fire/explosion, and his greed brought the wage fraud, and the walkout. (which was great fun!)
I myself “found” some of the “lost” productivity…and give a bit of it to y’all.
One might say that in Zone 404 there lies a similar equation.

Read the memo…he does not say “wildcat, etc…rather tries to conceal it> “We have received an unusual number of absences [sic!]…from our ramp agent employees…” After than he brings down the hammer…
They say Southwest routing system was once stable, when it was smaller…but now it’s become highly metastatic, unstable and friable – presumably that makes for “lost productivity” and heavy pressures on middle management and the workers. Add to that a heavy-fisted authoritarian fella… It was a wildcat.
I well remember that in the 1950’s and even into the 60’s it was common. Hell, fellas would walk off if the boss told them they were forbidden to drink beer at lunch. On picket lines it was not rare to hear gunfire, mostly to intimidate the company finks. Fellas at night on the picket, well, it was dark, and it’s usually safe to shoot out a light. Standards have, it seems, fallen… But like Castro said, the time for weapons is past. I do hope so.

North Korea joins the Dead Hand Society.

The incapacitation of Kim is the same tactic as the physical elimination of Putin of which Lavrov spoke. Russia also has a Dead Hand strategy which I am assuming can be modified to include assasinations as well as an imminent nuke threat. Perhaps WMDs instead of an all out nuclear attack, depending. I would not screw with these machines they don’t care about you, your brother’s kidney condition or your senior rescue dog-they just go into action.

Russia’s ‘Dead Hand’ Is a Soviet-Built Nuclear Doomsday Device

A lot of great technology was developed during the Cold War. Things like GPS, the internet and microchips were all developed as part of the arms-race tech boom. Unfortunately, so was the Novichok nerve agent, the world’s largest nuclear weapon and Russia’s doomsday device, just to name a few.
You read that right. Like something out of one of the worst James Bond movies, the Soviet Union developed a world-ending mechanism that would launch all of its nuclear weapons without any command from an actual human.
Russia currently has an estimated 1,600 deployed tactical nuclear weapons, with another 2,400 strategic nuclear weapons tied to intercontinental ballistic missiles. This makes Russia the largest nuclear power in the world. All of these weapons are tied into the Perimeter, an automatic nuclear weapons control system.
The RT-2PM ICBM was designed to be road mobile and is mounted on a heavy truck.
In a crisis that might mean a first strike from the United States, high-ranking government officials or military commanders could activate the Perimeter. Perimeter would guarantee that the Soviet Union (and now, Russia) could respond even if its entire armed forces were wiped out.
Once switched on, the Perimeter system can launch the entire Russian nuclear arsenal in response to a nuclear attack. It was part of the Cold War doctrine of mutually assured destruction, a means of deterring nuclear attacks by ensuring the side who initiated a first strike also would be annihilated.
Called “Dead Hand” in the West, the theory is that a command and control system measures communications on military frequencies, radiation levels, air pressure, heat and short-term seismic disturbances. If the measurement points to a nuclear attack, the Perimeter begins a sequence that would end in the firing of all ICBMs in the Soviet (now, Russian) arsenal.
Perimeter would launch a command rocket, tipped with a radio warhead that transmits launch orders to Russian nuclear silos, even with the presence of radio jamming. The rocket would fly across the entire length of the country. After a number of test launches to prove the viability of such a command rocket, the Perimeter system went online in 1985.
The Soviet Union never confirmed that such a system ever existed, but Russian Strategic Missile Forces Gen. Sergey Karakaev confirmed it to a Russian newspaper in 2011, saying the U.S. could be destroyed in 30 minutes. Russian state media outlets suggest the system was upgraded to include radar early warning systems and Russia’s new hypersonic missiles.

I disagree that Medvedev is groomed as VVP’s successor. He’s used more as an ‘attack dog’ – can say things, VVP can’t say. Brother Larch seems to think it will be a member of the siloviki, Sergei Ivanov, whose been near Putin for all 22 years, and goes on to say “Dmitri is ideologically working to earn his place. But he is not one of them, nor from their core training and experiences. He is a politico.”
