Monday is a bank Holiday here in the UK, for those of you who do not know what that means, it means 99% of everyone has a day off work and those places of work are shut.
Which makes today POETS day, and for those of you who do not know what that means, it’s Piss Off Early, Tomorrow’s Saturday.
The constant harping on every media channel about Musk and Tesla cars and now latterly Tesla Trucks might cause you to wonder, especially as I have mentioned here recently that a consortium including Mitsubishi and Mercedes and others are far further ahead with their own electric trucks, and which one is a truck buyer going to even consider, so why is nobody mentioning Merc/Mitsu?
It’s the same in every field, the guys who buy and operate fleets of trucks do not look in the Daily Fail for info, they have back channels and trade magazines, and may well be blissfully unaware of the MSM Tesla hype, certainly all of them are aware of the Merc / Mitsu electric trucks coming down the line, and certainly anything they are going to buy will be that or a Volvo or a MAN or some such, buying a tesla truck will be the lunchtime joke , so essentially Merc / mitsu don’t give a fuck that the MSM is full of Tesla truck “news” and yet never even mentions their own far more advanced products and plans, and they don’t give a fuck because none of their customers read the MSM.
It reminds me of a second hand story told to me about a swiss money manager, he has a third in gold (phyzz or paper I have no idea) and so on, but the fact is that guy ain’t reading the daily fail either, he will have his own slew of trade rags and sources, and the people that advertise in those sources aren’t interested in the man in the street, because he isn’t their customer.
Last week in the daily fail there is a story about “Supermarket X” selling sausages that give you hepatitise, my *instant* thought was “Tesco” because in a past life (also mentioned here before) I had delivered pallete loads of reject foods to pig farms owned by/for tesco, I mean literall wooden pallets with boxes of reject / damaged fruit polo sweets, crawfords crackers, you name it all in cartons all machine shrink wrapped, and the whole fucking lot, pallettes and all, was fed into industrial shredding machines and fed to the pigs.
The subsequent stories have been largely buried in the MSM, but just before they went there was some blurb about an independent bought and paid for guvvmint scientist saying something to the effect that the identity of supermarket X wasn’t really an issue, as it could have happened to anyone, well, yes, anyone who had such a rapacious addiction to the bottom line that they will feed pigs destined for human consumption on wooden palletes, cellophane, silver paper and sweets… the actual identity of Tesco lasted online about 12 hours, and the entire story has now disappeared.. tesco advertising budget and PR for the win.
Again, nobody in the pig / pork trade learned anything from the MSM, and in the meat trade there is a definite heirarchy, people like my own butcher who raises his own meat on the hoof, down through the commercial places that have their own internal status demarcation between those dealing in red meat and white meat (pork and chicken is white meat) because, you know, they know, white meat is for scum, all the way down to the massive retailer / factory / farm combines like tesco.
It’s why when her indoors wanted a sewing machine my first thought was pfaff, the bastards make industrial automated sewing machines that have to be seen to be believed, and it’s got to the point where the only youtube vids on sewing she can watch are women in their seventies doing freehand quilting and embroidery on 1930’s treadle machines, because everyone else is battling with substandard equipment but they do not know it so they talk about certain materials and techniques being hard to do or work with.
It’s why when it comes to lasers Epilog and Trotec are only known to you if you know nothing about lasers, in which case you’ll think they are the rolls royce, the real professionals are using shit like Mitsu and Bystronic.
It’s why (related this here before too) in 1981/2 ish when I pull up on my Ducati 900 desmo the old farmer opposite expresses surprise, a well known tractor maker was what Ducati was to him, didn’t know they made motorbikes too…. and look at the history of Ducati and motorbikes were always a sideline until recent years in terms of turnover….. as motorcycles were a sideline for BSA for many decades.
BSA = Birmingham Small Arms, if you can line bore gun barrels you can make IC engine barrels..
Trump probably had similar trade mags and channels for his hotel and leisure shit, he won’t have paid any attention to the MSM when deciding to build a new hotel or not, because nobody who read the MSM was ever going to be a customer of his.
All of the above is an essential point.
If all the MSM channels are ignored by everyone making decisions, then nobody viewing the MSM channels is a customer, nobody is a buyer, nobody is making any choices that matter.
At that point the MSM channel in question, such as the Daily Fail, exists only to make a living off those that do not matter.
Stop taking the MSM and you will become totally uninformed about a myriad of matters, and your life won’t be one iota worse off, because none of the stuff they talk about matters.
Yellen et al are NOT going to Jackson Hole to make policy, policy is already made, they are going to Jackson Hole the same reason people go to industry only invite only trade shows, such as the previews of the Merc / Mitsu electric trucks three years ago now, so the dog can see the rabbit and get the inside info from the horse’s mouth, and vice versa… truck fleet buyer to merc / mitsu, no we don’t give a shit about looks or autopilot or anything else, what’s the cost per mile inc maintenance?… oh yes, and fucking Dunlop are there and on board too, with new rubber especially designed for the unique traction characteristics of electric traction, and Bosch are in there like Gangbusters, and Siemens, and every other fucker.
Nobody there is reading the daily fail or articles about the Tesla truck.
It’s one of the “differentiators” in human life, the Ford Transit (3,500 kg max all up weight) platform is the biggest selling small van in europe and has been a resounding sucess story for decades now.
Nobody, but nobody, running proper commerical wagons will even consider them as anything but a fucking joke, you buy a proper 7,500 kg job on a proper chassis with a proper drivetrain and proper cab and so on, fucking transits are for fucking assholes and lightweights, you can’t make money out of them.
If you run a fleet of 7/5 and 11/13 and 17 ton wagons, nothing makes you happier than seeing the competition buying transits.
Most of the transits on the road have logo’s, DHL and DPD and so on, and the dirty secret, all the drivers are self employed and all the vans are leased (and they tell you uber is evil) so they have you by the short and curlies.
This is the remit of the tesla truck, a very telling story in the Register recently (another tech rag that used to be good but long since disappeared up its own asshole with feminist PC crap and lightweight articles) about HDD vs SSD, everyone at the reg things SSD is the future, so they talk to an industry insider who says, basically, fuck off newb. (yes basically I know the guy)
Goes on to explain annual production of SSD v HDD in exabytes, costs of silicon fabs, single source supplies of platters and heads, the joys of archival and cold (spun down) HDD storage and all the rest, the Reg savages what was said and ignores most of it, and publishes a puff piece basically asking readers for their opinions, and the opinions are the same, the industry insiders doesn’t know what the fuck he is talking about.
Picture above is a gig I had about 10 years ago, about 3/4 of the way through so this is the last 20% or so of the pc’s to be processed, Friends Life bought Axa Insurance, and then went to IBM UK who went to IBM Romania (cheaper) who went to Lenovo and ordered 2,500 desktop PC’s and 500 laptops (400 T series and 100 X series from memory)
You think any of those cunts read El Reg?
Nope, and I know that for a fact because neither the IBM Romania project manager nor the Axa It guy had ever heard of the Reg, because it came up one day in convo, and what happened next was “ah, a funny little tech rag for geeks..” which actually sums it up pretty well.
The last gig I was working fibre backbone stuff all the way down, and fibre backbone stuff is racks of Juniper kit that can easily exceed 1.5 million sterling per rack, and you can easy have ten or fifteen racks like that just for one provider for their regional switching.
Sure, these people all attended trade do’s (insider invite only) and read trade mags, (again insider invite only) but nobody gave a shit about el reg…. when you’re out there at 2 am physically switching fibres back and forth to literally re-route entire regions of the country backbone between primary and failover circuits so you can swap out single juniper cards that cost more than a house, come back and tell me how I wasn’t a fucking “professional” or wasn’t at the cutting edge or anything or wasn’t a fucking “serious” player, mainly because I lacked certification up the wazoo…
There aren’t many people (staitstically speaking) in the UK who even know where these places are, much less who have been the sole flesh and blood guy moving fibres (which means data and voice and even telly channels) for several million corporate and private customers, Virgin had 8 regions so you’re switching 12.5% of their entire network, and those places were manned 24/7 by virgin staff, who were *not* assholes, but who also were not permitted to touch that shit.
Trump, for all his faults, isn’t wrong when he calls the MSM “fake news”, and he isn’t talking to you and me when he says it, he is talking to movers and shakers, he is saying nobody who means anything gives a shit what the MSM says, and he is saying it to people who mean something, not anyone else.
You and I may not be suckling from the MSM tit, but that still doesn’t mean that the likes of Trump are talking to ***US***….
Opps, wasn’t 10 years ago (how time flies when you’re having fun) it was 2012 so barely 5 years ago…
