Australian Stock Market Dec 1 dropped nearly 2% which is $28 billion, mostly on oil and energy stocks. Expect similar in USA. It’s going to hurt them, not Russia.
With oil at $65 and still heading south, the US shale oil guys are hurting bad, that being about half of what it costs them to produce. They can get out of paying by going bankrupt, but the billions they owe is going to hurt their lenders. Which also isn’t Russia.
The only way anyone will make money on this is, if they short-sell now and the Saudis then put the oil price back up. Nothing to stop that being the Saudis themselves of course.
I wonder really, who is taking who for a ride? why would the Saudis take a bath now to help the US? what do they get out of it?
You do realise that Russia exports in dollars and has costs in rubles?
This implies that the ruble / dollar exchange rate is acting as a release valve for the declining oil price which is used to fund the Russian government budget (in rubles).
The weakening exchange rate also has some other side effects. E.g. making imports into Russia more expensive and therefore less competitive against local producers. It also makes exports of Russian made goods cheaper and thus more competitive against producers in other countries.
I think you’ll fine that in most cases Russia does not need to import as much as they have been.
Those things that do not produce enough of domestically and therefore have to be imported will see an increase in price. Hopefully this will be a kick in the pants to increase production of those goods and services.
With an educated population, an abundance of natural resources and a growing but still underutilized industrial base these would not appear to be insurmountable problems. In fact I’d go so far as to call them opportunities for Russian entrepreneurs to full the gap.
Regarding the pathological russophobe of some East European countries (not all, indeed), one should tell them, clearly and loud, the following.
“You think that entrenching more US-NATO military hardware and also troops in your territory improve your defence and assure your protection. That’s totally false and stupid. You will be the first to be wiped out in the first minutes of a serious conflict involving Russia with US-NATO. And, most important, you, very probably, will be THE ONLY ONES. Since, put in front of a reciprocal total annihilation, soon after the first strikes, USA and RUSSIA will find a truce and then some agreement. Just look in your past, what happened to you and your nations when you offered your territories and troops to the enemies of Russia”.
Saudis get market share dominance. They are forcing customers to sign long term purchase agreements in order to get lowest price.
Saudis also are pressuring against Syria and Iran. They are consumed with that war, in this case, an economic war that hits Iran directly as oil producer and Russia who supports both Iran and Syria.
So, the question is: what took them so long to do this?
Of course, they are killing fracking and oil sands in U.S and Canada, but they help U.S. economy become more competitive with lower energy costs.
Tradeoffs in any use of weapons. Saudis were losing their influence. Sponsoring terror was become transparent and they needed a shield against war crimes and international money laundering while sponsoring terrorists.

I think this is huge news and a huge blow to the E.U. And Washington, and I’m one of those who have been quite critical of Putin.
And who knows what else was negotiated as part of this deal? like perhaps putting a stop to NATO’s supply lines to ISIS?
Certainly now Turkey no longer needs to make sure that Qatari pipeline is built; that is to say it’s no longer an imperative for them to see Assad fall…
UK increasingly concerned over “extremely aggressive probing of its airspace”-presumably Rus is still flying in international airspace?? Shades of evidence of WMD lies again? Uk implores NATO countries to act together-watch put for NATO Baltics etc to blockade airspace over Baltic somehow???-so Mistral cannot get home(can’t remember if first was due to go to Crimea-I can imagine the cheers in Sevastopol if it does- who has missing software CIA?).Putin +Turkey= to ensure Black Sea Fleet has access/prevent blockade to Med? Could Turkey blockade Black Sea access for Rus if NATO commands it? Unrevealed conversations here I am sure. Syria is “forward base” of Black sea Fleet? Can be reinforced? “Bad luck” says Putin to countries expecting south stream, sue EU for loss of transit fees. Turkey is playing renegade turncoat game/”look don’t walk all over me” as a NATO member? Not supporting Kurdish fighters wanting to fight ISIS because Kurds were terrorists some years ago against Turkey.Note Turkey near end of WW2 turned against Germany.Maybe Turkey v Rus for Crimean war has been forgiven.Turkey was part of Kosovo NATO action too.Turkey now regret this?Hmm-complicated not making much sense-Turkey’s aim to be EU member now dead in the water? VP still awaiting UKR bankruptcy to force the issue? Other commentators here talking about nuke option -I firmly believe no-VP is playing long game of “I told you so” when it all collapses NATO/EU politically/economically surely. Why take over a waste land? Rus can hunker down for a few years, they are all survivalists, only a few in USA living in caves and ex missile bunkers. Most seem crazy? But they know something can happen.
Here’s an article with some interesting perspectives on whether Russia can or will win “Cold War II”, ie. the current cold conflict between Russia and the US/EU. It adds yet another wrinkle to the question of Putin’s power.
The good news is, both the U.S. and Russia now have conventional fuel-air bombs so powerful they can incinerate entire cities without nuclear radiation fallout, which makes them usable, thus practically rendering nuclear weapons obsolete. Oh, that’s good news? Russia’s fuel-air bombs are better, therefore Russia is stronger. The bad news is, Russia being stronger probably won’t deter the hawks who want WW III, but what can one expect from 40 foot owl worshipers.
Either Kat Kan or Anon asks, “ I wonder really, who is taking who for a ride? why would the Saudis take a bath now to help the US? what do they get out of it?”
I think what the Saudis get out of it is stronger support for ISIS against Syria, possibly even a commitment to bomb Syria or otherwise depose Assad.
I think the reason nothing definitive has happened in Syria is that the interests of all the parties involved partially oppose each other. This is laid our on voltaire.net, where Thierry Meyssan writes. Sorry no link.
ECONOMICS: You make an excellent summation of the effects of the falling ruble at 15:23. I would quibble only w your comment,
“Those things that do not produce enough of domestically and therefore have to be imported will see an increase in price. Hopefully this will be a kick in the pants to increase production of those goods and services.”
Perhaps you underestimate the problem of lack of capital, particularly if tooling up is necessary. Also production so often isn’t accomplished by working directly w the raw natural resource, but instead w at least some imported components. In any case I think it takes a considerable period to begin to manufacture something new.
LARCHMONTER 445 said, “Ironically, it assists Israel in dealing with Syria, Iran and Hezbollah.

Anonymous @ 18:35: What do you find idiotic about Russia’s wanting a way to reliably deliver gas to the south of Europe? In the past there have been about 3 occasions when Russia had to turn off the gas tap to Europe cuz they dcn’t get Ukraine to pay up or stop stealing the gas intended for EU.
Anyway, it’s moot now cuz Russia withdrew from the Southstream project today.
Here is an excerpt from the latest anticipation from GEAB on the oil industry crisis. See also note 71 “The EU has certainly counted on this dependence to force Russia to yield and require it to negotiate on its terms. But the world has changed… It’s what the ideologues by nature always forget. “ http://www.leap2020.eu/Excerpt-GEAB-89-The-oil-industry-crisis_a17234.html
“Essentially, it’s very simple. It’s up to Germany. And it’s all about undoing Stalin. Stalin, at the outset of World War II, took East Prussia from Germany and moved the eastern part of Poland into Ukraine. Eastern Ukraine was originally from Russia; it is part of Russia and was given by Lenin to Ukraine. So let’s have East Prussia returned to Germany; the eastern part of Poland returned to Poland; and eastern Ukraine as well as Crimea – which Khrushchev gave to Ukraine – returned to Russia.”
Pepe says this is being “floated by a few concerned analysts in US, Germany & Asia”.

Its an interesting, but undoable idea.I liked the breakdown on nuclear capabilities. But while the idea of Southeastern Ukraine (Novorossia) returning to Russia is a doable idea, since the people would stay the same. Those millions of Russian speaking and Rus ethnic people would only exchange flags and passports. The culture, language, and history would stay the same. But Eastern Poland and the former East Prussia is not German at all now.The people aren’t German, nor the culture nor language. The millions of pre-war Germans that lived there fled or were expelled to rump Germany after WW2.So for 70 years they and their descendants have made new lives in other areas of Germany. Most of the people themselves are dead. And their descendants only know that area from books or talks by their relatives. While millions of Poles have settled for an equal time on that land. There is no doable way to undue generations of change there.
Meanwhile LPR has supposedly negotiated its own ceasefire with Kiev troops. Seems to b at local level, don’t know what the higher-ups will have to say about this. The Joint Center of the Control and Coordination was involved (this includes high level Russian observers, too, up to a General) but that is operating only at Debaltseve… still a ceasefire there would be great. It is supposed to included the whole LPR front line, assuming LPR does have the control over the Cossack units they claim to have.
Back in Moscow, supposedly just resigned are two senior people overseeing Kremlin relations with CIS countries and lately also with Novorossiya.
“As part of the Kremlin’s office in charge of Russian policy toward Ukraine, there have been personnel changes, told “Vedomosti” a source in the presidential administration and the people close to her. Management of socio-economic cooperation with the CIS countries, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which oversees presidential aide Vladislav Surkov, resigned Boris Rapoport (including he engaged in political part of the work with the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republic), and a little earlier Vladimir Avdeenko, who served as director of the department and oversaw the economic component of relations with the DNR and LC.”
Would be nice to know why and who they’ll be replaced with. ZERO in English about the rumoured “Igor Udovichenko who worked in 2011 as deputy head of the Domestic Policy. According to media reports, in July 2013. As of May 2014, he headed the board of directors of “Rosvodokanal”.”
“Rosvodokanal” is a huge water supply/treatment company, part of the Alfa Group, a typical finger in every pie oligarch owned conglomerate. They might be Putin-backing oligarchs though.
because going into this site through the front door you can’t reach it. It’s been disappeared. (But there’s software for that, e.g. it was used to retrieve the suppressed BBC story on MH-17 downing.)
Despite this, this is a very good site protivmaidana.ru which has such things as a copy of General Korsun’s founding statement, with signatures, and photo of 13 of the mutineers. The news archive is open all the way back.
Apparently LPR forces, a small group, went to Anthracite and had a small shootout with the Cossacks running the place. Cossack leaders Praptor and Shakhtar and one other were killed.
The topic of the fight was illegal coal sales to Kiev, in a funny twist apparently labelled as “coal from South Africa”. It seems the coal may have been sold by the Cossacks, who complained earlier they were not getting aid from the State (ie LPR). However, a few days earlier, Cossack leader Dramov,in a speech, claimed LPR PM Plotnitsky was selling coal illegally. So the other view of the battle is that it was a fight for control of the illegal trade, rather than the “law” putting an end to it.
In a war of words now, it is hard to tell what is what. Senior leader of these Cossacks, Kozitsyn, went to Russia about a week before the fight, and has since reported, by video, that he is on holiday and won’t be back in the foreseeable future, may be doing some humanitarian aid work from Russia instead.
Another interesting twist is, the Kiev minister who arranged the coal order from South Africa has been arrested on charges of fraud, on the grounds of the coal being overpriced. Would be extra interesting if the true story was, he’d arranged it locally, and claimed it was South African, just to be able to add the freight “charges”.
Heck, this is Ukraine, anything is possible. But that is enough triple-twisted conspiracy theory for now.
In the next exciting episode, “How Kiev made it official to put US aid onto the black market”.

Wait, who is supposedly putting pressure on who???
South Stream no more. Hello “Turk Stream.”
Winners:
– America
– Russia
– Turkey
Losers:
– Ukraine
– Bulgaria, Serbia, Austria, Italy

This is big news…not much coverage on MSM so far. What’s your take on this?
My take on it: here.
@alexrpt:
To Anonymous 19:02, 19:03, 19:08,
Here’s an article with some interesting perspectives on whether Russia can or will win “Cold War II”, ie. the current cold conflict between Russia and the US/EU. It adds yet another wrinkle to the question of Putin’s power.
http://quemadoinstitute.wordpress.com/2014/12/01/is-putin-winning-cold-war-ii/
The good news is, both the U.S. and Russia now have conventional fuel-air bombs so powerful they can incinerate entire cities without nuclear radiation fallout, which makes them usable, thus practically rendering nuclear weapons obsolete. Oh, that’s good news? Russia’s fuel-air bombs are better, therefore Russia is stronger. The bad news is, Russia being stronger probably won’t deter the hawks who want WW III, but what can one expect from 40 foot owl worshipers.
Can someone please explain why Putin hasn’t given the S300s to Syria yet?
Either Kat Kan or Anon asks, “
I wonder really, who is taking who for a ride? why would the Saudis take a bath now to help the US? what do they get out of it?”
But the positives for the Kingdom outweigh the negatives. So the oil price war is on.”
But Larchmonter, it’s NOT ironic: Saudis & Israel are secret allies. Saudi royal family is even Jewish. Search “Wayne Madson Saudi crypto Jews” for really interesting research.
ARCHMONTER445: Terrible news about the no-fly zone on Turkey-Syria border. Thanks for posting that.
Re: Russia’s commitment to supply Syria w S-300s: In the last day or two Putin reiterated full support for Syria including the S-300s, so I guess they shd be there very soon (unless, sneakily, they are already there).
See also note 71
“The EU has certainly counted on this dependence to force Russia to yield and require it to negotiate on its terms. But the world has changed… It’s what the ideologues by nature always forget. “

“President putin is wrong when he says that russia should or will target the missile on europe if america goes with anti missile defence plan in Europe.”
Anonymous, I don’t think he DID say that. Sounds much too directly threatening for Putin.
Larchmont
Saudi arabia is’ Perfect ally for the U.S. hegemony. Chaos is good for the Hegemon. One reason all the off-shoots of AQ are now stronger than AQ ever was. Boko Harum, ISIS, et al.’
Larchmont, on Saker’s other post, it seems that Turkey has signed a deal with Russia…I think that is tremendous news in the fight against ISIS.

“What do the Saudis get out of this? Are you serious? The House of Saud is NOTHING without the U.S. Military.
The day the U.S. withdraws military support, the royal family is history.
This is why i do not believe for a second that the Saudis are trying to hurt the shale industry.”
Yes, anon, I think Saudi is probably being blackmailed. that’s the US’s favorite. I also get from a recent video of Putin…the one a Valdai, that Merkel is being blackmailed….he said as much, without naming her, but it seemed clear to me that she also is a target for blackmail. How disgusting the american cia is.
Anonymous at 21:52 said, “Certainly now Turkey no longer needs to make sure that Qatari pipeline is built; that is to say it’s no longer an imperative for them to see Assad fall…” [due to Russia-Turkey pipeline}
Fut, anonymous, Turkey will more than ever oppose the proposed Iran-Syria-Iraq pipeline to EU, so will want Assad downfall to prevent it.
Penelope,
Is that Iran to EU pipeline viable? Kind of doubt it. And having the main gas pipeline to SE Europe might be something Turkey would like.
11/26 Donbass asked for UN peacekeeping forces.
20/20 . . . Which is more likely?
a) The state of readiness of the Russian armed forces is a military secret,
or
b) the state of readiness of the Russian military has been announced at press conferences.

Givi looking well rested. Good to see.

ANTHRACITE CITY
Perhaps Lugansk folded because the LPR-Cossack war has made it ungovernable.
Prapor is dead — it appears, last seen alive in ambulance but with bullet through heart.
Here’s the most expansive coverage of the shootout between LPR and Cossacks. You have to use this url:
http://z5h64q92x9.net/tr-url/ru-en.en/protivmaidana.ru/svodki/15285-301114-korr-dmitriy-rodionov-what%E2%80%99s-proizoshlo-na-samom-dele-v-gorode-antratsite.html
because going into this site through the front door you can’t reach it.
The news archive is open all the way back.
re Anthracite
