Pepe Escobar in eastern Ukraine: Howling in Donetsk

30 March 2015: Asia Times’ roving correspondent Pepe Escobar just returned from a reporting trip to the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), the pro-Russian enclave in the Donetsk Oblast province of eastern Ukraine. The area’s been the scene of heavy fighting between pro-Russian rebels and the Ukrainian military.

The video part of this webpage doesn’t show in Firefox ESR v31.6.0
I have to open the link in Chrome or another browser to see the video.

    • anonymous on March 31, 2015  ·  at 7:09 pm EST/EDT

I just updated my Firefox from 34.0.4 to Firefox 37.0.Both of them played the video.Maybe try updating your Firefox.

      • Arius on March 31, 2015  ·  at 10:55 pm EST/EDT

I’m running the ESR version of Firefox for large organizations which has a slower update release schedule and its current release is v31.6.0

When I moved to Kaspersky anti-virus on all my systems it’s addons didn’t all work with the non-ESR Firefox release. Kaspersky recommended the ESR and since moving to the ESR release I have all Kaspersky functionality. Since I don’t trust any US based AV (due to back doors for the no such agency) I will not be able to use the non-ESR.

So until the ESR works I’ll use the Chrome browser for Saker videos.

The new PM Stefan Löfven attended the Bilderberg meeting 2 years ago.
It was Marcus Wallenberg who wanted to “introduce” the welder-Löfven to the real powers-that-be/TPTB, according to the Swedish MSM at the time.
M Wallenberg invited” him to tag along; kind of like a ‘horse and pony show’ for Löfven.
When I heard about that, I began to think twice about who Löfven really is.
The SVD story confirms my suspicions; the PM is a sell-out.
Lets hope we swedes can hold back the elites from placing us all in harms way.

    Poland preparing for war?
“In other words, compulsory military training was introduced for all men under the age of 50. After 23rd March this year, when the Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz regulation came into force, Poles may be called up for service in case of military training at any moment, even inconvenient for them.

What is more, within 6 weeks the Polish government also introduced several other laws concerning the army, which may be perceived as preparations for war. I mean for example the regulations in respect to damages caused by foreign troops, or the regulation on the costs of non-professional soldiers’ funerals”
    http://journal-neo.org/2015/03/31/poland-nato-s-logistics-base/

    • Anonymous on April 01, 2015  ·  at 2:00 am EST/EDT

All these ‘preparations’ are not so much for war, but rather to distract and channel away domestic civil unrest with the economic malaise and unemployment (especially among the youth). The beneficiaries of the current unsustainable system would rather see mass chaos and destruction than change the system and risk losing their somewhat privileged position in it.

any excuse will do to start a war-eg supposed “sabotage” of that Polish flight in the fog….that kind of scenario is what, horrifyingly, is what could happen, the momentum just builds up its own hysteria……..to create any excuse, eg retake/blockade Kallinagrad, or put sanctions on things……….

http://www.bbc.co.uk/russian/international/2015/03/150325_donetsk_rebel_interview?ocid=socialflow_facebook Article on russian involvement , it shows how the Russians were involved but it reiterates the point Saker makes that Russia hasn’t yet betrayed anyone, since it is willing to sacrifice men

    • Uncle Bob 1 on March 31, 2015  ·  at 11:43 pm EST/EDT

Interesting article.Since its from the BBC, we need to “take it with a grain of salt”,as the saying goes. But still I think we can assume some of it true (from what we’ve heard before from others). He leaves it somewhat murky in parts. But the main points to me are these: “Here I met only Russian contractors. Under Debaltseve was Buryat part, there were some Buryats. They said that all knew where they were going, but officially stated: “We are going to exercise”. It was said that they were transported in cars at night so that no one could see nothing. And there were, say, those who refused to go. You can safely say “no”. But those who came, they came here voluntarily and know what they are going.” So the “vacationing Russians” that come are, as we’ve heard volunteers. Not troops made to serve there as the West claims. And: ” I do think there is any secret agreement between Russia, the EU and the United States that they are not each other trying to figure. After all, if the EU or the US wanted to catch Russia that its units are here, I think it would be easy to do. They just have to photographed and all equipment. But they do not turn a blind eye. And the Russians, in turn a blind eye to the presence of American and European military with the Ukrainian side.” and “Of course. When taken Debaltseve was captured about 300 foreign military. Americans and Europeans. Most of them are snipers. Instructors very much. We instructor mainly Russian military, and they, of course, the Western.” That shows that as we’ve suspected the NATO countries are lying on their involvement in Ukraine. It also may explain why, though they make claims of Russian troops, they never provide any proof to those claims. They fear if they do Russia will expose the NATO troop involvement. And finally this statement is meaningful as to what the end should be to the crisis: “Let’s wait for the change of power. According to my observation, the Ukrainian nation as a whole against the war. But here’s the leadership of Ukraine is set to the conflict. If there is a change of government, and leave Poroshenko, the war will end. In general, we will fight until the liberated territory of Donbass. I hope it will happen soon. But I’m willing to stay here a year or two.” This shows that people there believe that the fascist junta must fall to bring peace.

Someone commented at the Saker about the House of Cards on Netflix. It shows the political elites in the US as corrupt and decadent, lying from one moment to the next. But it shows a massive contradiction in the minds that created it. On the one hand the Underwoods reek of corruption to the point of committing murder, but then also as being ‘progressive’ in the neoliberal sense (women’s rights gay rights, etc). This contradiction in the minds of the script writers is so embedded and automatic that they don’t give it a second thought, and same goes for almost all Americans that watch it.

Then there is the characterization of the President of Russia. It was obviously a crude attack on Putin with the usual accusations of being a dictator, fixed elections, etc. It’s as thought the western mind is possessed by a archetypal conception of Putin and the Russian people that must not be questioned.

Congress has long since lost its mythological sanctity. Could House of Cards show an ongoing cultural process of de-sanctification of the great father figure in the White House? I look for trends and I wonder if I am seeing something significant here.

    Regarding the current geo-politics.

Syriza’s election and the visit of Tsipras’ to Russia next week are definitely a large opportunity for Russia.

By all accounts – and looking at their payment schedule, Greece could run out of money at any time, maybe in April, but in any case – Greece have no hope of paying the debts they have that fall due in July.

What else is happening in July?

Oh – that’s right – the twin meetings of the BRICS & SCO in Ufa, Russia. July 9-10, 2015.

Perfect opportunity awaits Putin & Tsipras (Russia & Greece) respectively in the next few months.

This is why I firmly believe Russia wanted an end to hostilities in Donbass, even at the price of the DPR & LPR curtailing their offensives – it wants to make this joint BRICS & SCO Summit a resounding success – and not be distracted and diminished by possibly hostile actions going on.

Given all that it is really key Russia/ Putin invite Tsipras/ Greece to be an observer at these twin summits. Hell, if things really start to turn – it might be worth asking Hollande & Merkel to come along as observers – that would really put the wind up US/UK/NATO et al.

But certainly Greece must be extended an invitation – perhaps as a prelude to membership of either or both and/or the EEU.

    • Kat Kan on April 01, 2015  ·  at 3:39 am EST/EDT

Greece is going to need money a lot more than sitting in on meetings.

I wonder if China can temporarily declare Greece to be an Asian nation in need of development?

      • Julian on April 01, 2015  ·  at 3:45 am EST/EDT

I say observer because that is usually the prelude to full membership (which I assume) has to be approved by other members.

It might be that Greece is invited to Ufa as an observer, but leaves as a full member – at least of the SCO/ EEU.

Turkey & Iran are also key players in all this. I doubt Greece would be able to join any of these organisations before Turkey. It would be better in fact if they joined at the same time so neither could influence in any way whether the other could join.

Definitely China has a role to play and needs to step up to the plate.

uprising called for in north east ukraine,
    ”
“Now the ground will burn under your feet, already in the next 48 hours.”
I don’t think this is an April 1 joke but obviously uncertain how effective this will be…….

“Statement on the establishment of anti-fascists Ukrainian Committee for the Liberation of the Black Sea.
Committee announces Odessa, Nikolaev, Kherson regions of the jurisdiction of the Kiev authorities.”
anna-news google translate, I think this means the anti-fascists have declared to obtain freedom from Kiev
if a russian speaker could check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cfe3gygz5uE

cos events like below and recent proven crimes against Kiev and battalions etc must upset people:
“Servicemen volunteer battalion “Aydar” hijacked from medical institutions, two ambulances. Told the head of Lugansk regional military and civil administration Gennady Moskal on its website. “Soldiers volunteer battalion” Aydar “stolen from medical institutions on the territory controlled by Ukraine Lugansk region, two ambulances. One of the city hospital in g.Schaste, the second – from the TB dispensary in s.Trehizbenka Novoaydarsky area. Both cars were used by them for their own travel ”

and recent deaths , an increasing AGU military forces and entrenchment as OSCE has notified/observed/revealed itself in recent days

1st April “According to the report of the Ministry of Defence of the People’s Republic of Donetsk Ukrainian security forces over the past day more than 30 times violated the ceasefire. “Reported 31 cases of ceasefire violation. Of them twice with the use of artillery bombardment was conducted 19 times from mortars, seven times with tanks, armored vehicles, antiaircraft guns and small arms ”

    (incidentally
“Administrative Court of Appeal of Odessa upheld the decision taken by the court Seaside banning Ukrainian radical removal of the monument to the Russian empress Catherine II.”)

and also not surprising as Kiev has…
“Rada Deputy and Ukrainian nationalist leader Dmitriy Yarosh announced that a procedure for incorporating the Right Sector into the UAF as an subordinate organization had been agreed upon. The two sides agreed at a closed meeting between Ukrainian MOD representatives and Yarosh in Dnepropetrovsk to adopt as a model the cooperation between the Tallinn government and the Estonia Defense Union, which began in the early 1990s.
“We agreed to introduce a bill that would establish the Right Sector as the basis for an organization similar to the Estonia Defense Union. We will have reserve units, combat units. This will be a compromise system, the golden middle which will satisfy both us and the government institutions,” Yarosh told Ukrainian journalists.”
    http://fortruss.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/right-sector-will-become-autonomous.html

now what was Saker saying about brown shirts?
Or are these a Waffen SS equivalent maybe?
