I don’t know about you, but I sure don’t feel very festive today. I just was outdoors with my son and we heard the distance sounds of fireworks going off. From time to time, a rocket shot up into the night sky. And even though this will sound trite, I have to tell you that my thoughts went to the night sky over Slaviansk, Kramatorsk and Nikolaevka who, in some sense, probably appeared superficially similar with artillery fire from the distance, explosion sounds and flares in the sky. Over here, in Florida, people are rejoicing. In Novorussia, they are dying. And considering the role of Uncle Sam in this massacre, I really feel less inclined to join the 4th celebrations then ever. Besides, what kind of “independence” can the people here celebrate other than a delusional one? The truth is that the people of the USA have been reduced to the status of serfs for the 1%. Their ancestors would have been much better off humbly asking to be accepted into the Iroquois Confederacy or another other Native American culture, than breaking away from the British Crown only to end up ruled by bankers and financiers, just like… the UK.
But it is also true that the poor people of the USA need something simple and consensual to celebrate, at least a few times a year. So maybe a different, more subdued but also more inspiring celebration is in order? Something uniquely American, but which would also be something universal, something which would touch the hearts of all humans and make Americans and non-Americans feel for a few minutes that they belong to the same race and the same world?
Maybe this is naive or clumsy, but this is my idea of how we all, “aliens” like myself and Americans can feel together for a few minutes:music. I hope that you will enjoy this uniquely American song, performed by one of my favorite musicians (a fellow “legal alien” living in the US of A).
The Saker
Thanks so much for Roger’s video… made me cry.
And I feel as you do wrt lack of “celebration” ~ truly, what is there to celebrate? My country’s gov’t killing people all over the planet?
Namaste
Very sad occasion, at the same time absolutely beautiful and very truthful song. It is resonating with the heart of the peace and love.
You have made my day and I hope more of the readers of your blog will agree with me.
Thanks, Saker. I didn’t participate in a July 4th celebration, either. I have no ill feelings towards ordinary Americans–I try not to hate anyone–but I don’t believe in the ideology of the U.S. any more.
But that was a beautiful song. Thanks for sharing it.
I share the same thoughts, but as far as celebration, I cannot compare the earth shaking and tremors of the Volgograd (Stalingrad) February victory fireworks celebration just at the Volga shores every year. The fireworks take place in the frozen evenings, Somehow my thoughts go in the same direction, that at the end of the living hell there would be a Victory for the two small republics. I hope for winter…
Saker – this is really good – thanks for linking it.
I was in high school in the US in the 1960’s and one big difference between then and now is music. Much of folk music then addressed civil rights, the environment, and the injustice of war. That music inspired many of us. I recently attended a concert by Peter and Paul (Mary is deceased). Not one song about Palestine. Why would that be, I wonder?
John
Mr. Nora sat on the porch swing and watched the fireworks up over the hill as we usually do. I didn’t, couldn’t even stand the sound this year and kept thinking of the Donbass every time something went bang.
Then, while I was watching the Roger Waters video and crying yet again, he sent me this:
” There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States, at this very hour.”
“For revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival.”
That quote is from Frederick Douglass in 1852. Here is the entire speech: http://www.blackagendareport.com/content/meaning-july-fourth-negro
Most of us here have somewhat recently come to realize what our country is truly about. But the truth is, it was always like this, right from the start.
And Saker, many people, especially in the Northeast, *did* leave the colonies and join various tribes — precisely bc the Native Americans lived a lot better than the colonists. This was especially true for women, but many men did this also. And the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Great Law of Peace kept the peace and the rule of law, both domestically and between five and then six separate nations, for somewhere between five and six hundred years. I really do believe it’s Americans and Western Europeans who are, and have always been, truly primitive — barbarians.
Me too. Wasn’t interested in July 4th. I still hear lots of fire-works going off all around but I didn’t bother to walk up the hill to see them. I thought about those folks in Ukraine and Gaza. It seemed wrong to watch a “fake” war when others were experiencing a real one. Dear Lord — what have we done? Such wickedness is difficult to comprehend. Shameful really.
Don’t be so hard on yourself Saker. Do not allow malicious malpractice to enter your sanctuary — your thought. Your only responsibility is to Truth. You’re not responsible for anothers hate. And take care of you and yours.
Dear Saker. I admire you for your courage and diligence of exposing some “classified” realities of the current events in the world. You definitely making a difference by forcing us, your audience to look for an answer, somewhere deep inside, hiding.
As H.D. Thoreau said: “Things do not change, we change.”

The aim of such surge was probably a natural reaction to such statements. After using certain forces this information has been made publicly known to us persons accused would be around Vladimir V. This would cause a significant surge of emotion in which all the negativity aimed at discrediting the President, and in the future to a new Marsh or Maidan but under the other sauce.

Planned mass murder of people in Odessa on may 2 (video included)

” July 4 at the information centre of the South-Eastern front” held a Skype-inclusion from Odessa with the participation of the journalist Irina Lashkevich.
Irina told about how it moves on investigation of tragedy on may 2 in the House of trade Unions in Odessa. It noted that “under the Governor of the Commission, which publishes the results of its work. I was struck by the fact that in the basement of the House of Unions on 7 floors. We speak of only one floor. Doors immured. Nobody is trying to get to the truth. The facts are held back. People were poisoned by chlorine is a proven fact. Then they were destroyed.
Now we are on particles collected the testimony of the people who survived. They are afraid to tell their names. Afraid to testify. Still many questions that have no answers. The SBU and the Prosecutor’s office does not publish any data about the investigation”.
The ANNA News video of the interview does not have English subtitles, unfortunately. There is probably a lot more info and detail in the video.
July 4th should’ve been a celebration of liberty and life… for me it’s overshadowed by the maiming and deaths of too many on too many fronts, so I’ve a feeling we missed something along the road and have been herded into ‘free speech zones’ and that’s about it.

“According to unconfirmed reports from Ukra – media, as they believe, never, militia column, fighting broke out surrounded Slavyansk.
As a better option than the death of the heroic Russian boys in Slavyansk the hands of the executioners, we can and will (!), to believe the best.
With the night, many fascist sources report that from Slavyansk in Kramatorsk, broke considerable column equipment and manpower patriots Army DND.
According to information from social networks, allegedly from local residents, received information that on the highway from Slavyansk drove 2 tanks, three KAMAZ trucks, armored personnel carriers and 15 cars with militiaand at the moment are in Kramatorsk, near the headquarters of defense.
In other Internet source, users report that in Kramatorsk broke about 50 units of equipment: 2 tanks, about 30 Ural and three NONA Army DND.
Count on the best, without outside help, surrounded Slavyansk, the days of the heroic patriots would be considered, and the other variant is little hope for a mobilization of Donbass to battle with the Nazis.”

“With the night, many Ukrainian sources (in particular korrespondent.net, vesti.ua and TSN) report that from Slavyansk in Kramatorsk, broke a significant colon equipment and manpower.
First this information was published in the “News of Ukraine” correspondent Olga Omelyanchuk (June 4, 23:00): “At the moment there is an intense battle between militia DND and Ukrainian law-enforcers, between Slavonic and Kramatorsk”.
The same information is confirmed in 95 airmobile brigade (standing on the mountain Karachun) – “the power of the enemy, trying to get out of Slavyansk and strengthened in the town of Kramatorsk.
“Several colon, fights break out in Kramatorsk. Works on located on the mountain Karachun artillery”. This bombardment was recorded on video.
And in the morning (05:15), TSN reported that colon militias from Slavyansk still broke in Kramatorsk.
The same is confirmed in social networks locals – in Facebook group Kramatorsk wrote that on the highway from Slavyansk drove 2 tanks, three KAMAZ trucks, armored personnel carriers and 15 cars with militia, and at the moment are in Kramatorsk, near the headquarters of defense.
Twitter users report that in Kramatorsk broke about 50 pieces of equipment: 2 tanks, about 30 Ural and three of NONA.
Also it is reported that the militia DND attempted to recapture the aerodrome, under the control of the Ukrainian military.”

While Kiev battles eastern Ukrainians today, the prospect of those in the west rising up against an increasingly feeble government squandering state resources in pursuit of Western dictates is on the rise. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s pursuit of an unwinnable war in the east coupled with merely rubber-stamping US-EU mandates regarding the Ukrainian economy is a recipe for growing domestic dissent that could appear in the streets of Kiev itself. With Kiev augmenting its floundering military with irregular, mercenary factions of questionable loyalty, those fighting for Kiev in the east today, could end up toppling the regime back in Kiev tomorrow.
For those in the east, digging in and standing their ground is a literal matter of survival. The extremists that put the current regime in Kiev into power will make life untenable for the people of eastern Ukraine should they submit to the current Poroshenko government. This ensures protracted hostilities that will last long enough to overlap growing dissatisfaction in the west regarding Poroshenko’s poor management of Ukraine in all other areas. In other words, Kiev faces a ticking time bomb created of its own incompetence and encouraged by those in the West that have propped up the current government in the first place.

The inevitable look over to China, another state in the US-Empire’s crosshairs:
The Chinese province of Xinjiang has recently become the site of an episode of violent terrorism. A suicide bombing has killed 39 Chinese people in a market place, and in addition, 29 were stabbed to death at a train station. The response of the Chinese government has been swift, with 113 people being sent to prison.
As the world watches China’s noble attempt to keep this violence from spreading, a question remains unanswered: Is the United States involved, this time?

Events in Ukraine and the creation of the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU) have raised the stakes in the game codenamed «winning the sympathy of Baku». Among the noted players targeting Azerbaijan, the US is the least consistent, and the political elite in the Caspian republic continue to regard its American partners with suspicion… The latter reciprocates, periodically addressing the subject of human rights violations in Azerbaijan and the presence of political prisoners in the country. Official Washington commentators often make great leaps in their evaluations and prognoses. Fairly recently, the United States Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morningstar made a number of controversial statements against local authorities. While discussing Azerbaijan’s development prospects, the American diplomat pointed out the lack of solidity in the republic’s leadership. According to Morningstar, whose opinions should not be taken lightly bearing in mind the functionary’s track record of work in positions of responsibility in the US State Department, there are a variety of points of view represented among Azerbaijan’s prominent policy makers regarding the priorities of the country’s foreign policy.

The problem in the song is the lyrics including “someday” and “do believe”.
Although it may not scan, but perhaps “today” and “do” would have more utility.
“Celibrations”, circuses and traditions have many ideological functions and are accordingly invented as required – a recent invention in the alleged United Kingdom being Armed Forces Day, supported by media campaigns.
Their ideological utility can be measured by the mawkishness of the songs and reactions, including tear quotient.
Perhaps the words of W.C.Fields have more utility – There comes a time in the affairs of men dear friends when we must grab the bull by the tail and face the situation.
In a war self anasthesia is not to be recommended, and thinking such is necessary gives strategic advantage to the opponent.
Purtroppo. Poi toccherà alla Russia.
Slavyansk has fallen. Resistance forces are withdrawing to Kramatorsk to consolidate and defend against an inpending assault on that location.
Well, yasterday, the last thing I did before going to sleep was to see the latest news in the blog. Though at last the sun shone through here, after several days without seeing it, I felt sad.
I think maybe I should take a little distance. I´ve never gotten so much in a war, I can not stop thinking Novorussia people either walking along the beach or working. I´ve never appreciated so much what is live in peace. Small everyday problemas seems silly.
Although summer is for me the most beautiful time of the year, this year I do not fell so well, and even though I should have already booked my holiday for September, I do not know why I do not, I resist.
Basically, I would like to use this time to help those people….
Today, the first thing I did, after breakfast, is to see the latest news in the blog….
Thanks for the song and for the hope.
Although sometimes I feel a little sad, this a good place to spend time.
Seems like the gig is up and the US-controlled junta is winning: Slaviansk was abandoned and is now considered “liberated” territory….
The self-defense forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic have left Slavyansk, which is surrounded by the Kiev military, Russian media reported, citing the republic’s headquarters.
“The Ukrainian military is in control of Slavyansk,” Channel One reported citing the headquarters of the Donetsk People’s Republic. “Early in the morning, the self-defense fighters were forced to leave the city.”
According to Channel One’s information “there was massive shelling” and then armored vehicles entered Slavyansk and street fighting began. That’s when the self-defense forces took the decision to leave the city, the channel said.

The beginning of the end! Must be another chess move by the greatest “grandmaster” Putin.
Putin should start building fortifications around Moscow. They’ll need it soon. If he thought his “Western friends and colleagues” will leave him and Russia alone after they finish off the Russian population in Ukraine he’s deadly wrong.
Also, the grandmaster should not forget to congratulate July 5th to his Western friends and colleagues.

I hope, and to some extent trust, the militia got out alive. What the militia has definitely done is the following.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION.
1) Kiev destroyed the city’s infrastructure… for whatever reason, whatever sociopathic reason.
2) Now, they must restore it.
The meme will be that the militia destroyed the infrastructure (which, please note, even if it were true, which it blatantly isn’t, doesn’t make a shred of difference: Kiev was “saving” the city), that the infrastructure is very hard to replace, and that it will take time. In other words, too bad for the inhabitants of the city.
This is a losing strategy, and certainly not a strategy that will in any future within the boundaries of the lifetime of the universe permit “taking back Crimea”.
It is a tragedy, perpetrated by Kiev and its European and American backers, but it is also a tactical victory for Russia. I say this impartially.
Piece by Bryan MacDonald about Ukraine then and now, about the false hopes and betrayal by the oligarchs, EU and the “democracy and freedom” loving USA.
Just over a year ago, in rather more peaceful times, I was on a train from Kharkov to Simferopol, sharing a cabin with two Russian gents from the Far Eastern outpost of Nakhodka and, breaking the monotony of long distance rail commutation, we were musing about the differences between Ukraine and Russia.
My travelling companions were journeying to visit close family who they hadn’t met before – unusual to European ears but understandable when the distance between their home and Crimea is about the same as that between Paris and Chicago.
The two Russians spoke effervescently about the kinship between the nations and the fraternal ties but they did notice how decrepit and haggard the country looked by comparison with their homeland. “What have these guys being doing for twenty years? Even the escalator stairs in Kharkov train station was broken, I asked the woman at the station and she said it stopped working in 1995 but they never bothered to fix it,” the older of the two, Sasha, told me.
Ukraine, the country no one cared about – RT Op-Edge
The above mentioned article makes several references to the EU-association agreement. A couple of days ago, Michael Hudson expanded on the subject during an interview for TRNN:
But in the [EU association] agreement that was signed on Friday, there’s no agreement at all for the E.U. to give any fiscal support to build Ukrainian infrastructure or Georgian infrastructure. There’s no support from Europe at all. It is only taking from the Ukraine. What it says is the Ukraine, by signing the agreement with us and potentially moving NATO in, you’ve got to stop exporting to Russia and you’ve got to give up 70 percent of your imports. You’ve got to lower your wages–already at the lowest in Europe–to absolute starvation levels because we don’t–you don’t have anything that you can export that we in Europe want. We’re not going to give you the support under the common agricultural policy that French farmers and German farmers and other European farmers get; you’re not going to get any of the subsidies that we give our own members.
[…]
There’s not going to be any exports to Europe, because Europe, the last thing the Europeans want is any competition from the Ukraine, until such time as the Europeans can buy out Ukrainian agriculture, kick the Ukrainians off the land, and turn them into mechanized farming, and then take all the food and the land rent and the value of the food to the West.
So what this is is almost like a repetition of the grabbing of Central Africa that you had in the middle of the 19th century applied to the Ukraine using a neoliberal rhetoric that all this is good and look at your exports. Well, you could say that of the Congo. You could say that of any country that’s taken over. By taking over and conquering you, we now give you access to our market, except we’re not going to buy anything from you.
Ukraine: Bureaucratic Bliss – Michael Hudson

Nora and Saker:
There are many different strands in America, and its wrong to pigeonhole our country into one of them merely because a certain small elite has seized the entire land and strangled all real political opposition. Modern American leadership is most definitely a fusion of New England Moralism, Dutch/New York Financialism, and Southern Elitism and Warmongering – this is the origin and locus of our modern Ever-Crusading Military-Financial Pirate State and its striving towards reducing most Americans to peons to serve them.
However, the vast majority of the country and of Americans is not representated by these people, but instead by the peaceful Midlands/Borderlands culture stretching from the Mid-Atlantic out through Appalachia and across the plains to the west – the peaceful and quiet farming/manufacturing economy of small towns and cities that most people think of with the word America – you know the old question – “Will it play in Peoria?” These people – Germans, Irish, Scots-Irish, Northern English, and then later Scandanavians, and central Europeans from Austria-Hungary and Congress Poland – are what people think of when you say Americans – not the Trader/Planter/Banker/Opinon Maker elites of New England, New York, Virginia, and their colonies of LA and San Francisco. There are universally recognized different names for them than American – Yankees and Southerners – and they certainly have different names for the rest of us – Rednecks, Hillbillies, Hicks, Yokels, Country-Bumpkin, Hayseeds.
A politics for the future in America will figure out a way to unite the midlands against our coastal elite instead of allowing them to divide us so that they always win.
As to Frederic Douglas, abolitionists of his ilk are part of the reason so much history is misunderstood or outright whitewashed, starting with the use of American Midlanders and Appalachians as canon fodder for the political struggle between New England and Virginia in the American Civil War that was justified as a fight over slavery but was really a struggle over who would profit from the Africans in America – southern planters or northern merchants. If you listened to him, you’d never realize that Africans sold as slaves in the Americas were primarily military POW’s captured by established African states in war, and you’d never know about the history of kidnapping and enslavement of the Irish and poor English in England and the Americas by the southern English gentry that preceeded and formed the legal basis of later African slavery in America. You’d also miss the fact that the word slave comes from the ethnonym Slav, and that the mass enslavement of the Rus people of Russia and Ukraine via raiding parties in eastern Europe and the out via the ports of Crimea and Constantinople as late as the 1770’s and back to Roman times forms the basis of the entire European conception of slavery as well as the foundation of many a fortune in Europe. Really even today via the deceptive sex-trade stocking the brothels of Amsterdam, New York, Tel-Aviv, and really in many parts of the world the slave trade in Rus women continues even now.

Ah yes, Anonymous, Mad Monarchist indeed! Why should we constitutional monarchists bother with a NATOtalitarian’s paeans for absolute monarchy? We despise him and the disgusting social order he represents.
Isn’t it strange that the modern Regency romance (Balogh, Hunter, Wildes, Kleypas, James, Enoch, Chase, Quinn, Carlyle, Foley) offers the only comprehensive critique of that society which so oppressed our ancestors, whereas historians pretend it’s all modern democracy in fancy dress?
Far better to read William McNeill’s Pursuit of Power, which offers two points to ponder:
(i) What you want is not what you get. Britain fought the Seven Years War to eliminate the French threat to its American colonies. Mission accomplished, she asked them to help pay for it. “Why should we?” they replied, “Who’s threatening us now?” So they rose up in revolt, and Britain’s mercenaries attacked (do read Wikipedia on the Hessians, Anonymous – not the most sporting of chaps). To get back at Britain, the French King rushed to help the colonists, draining his arsenals and Treasury to such an extent he had to convene the Estates General, whereupon the country rose in revolt. Britain intervened to support him, prompting a mass mobilisation which made France a far greater threat than ever before.
(ii) Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. China’s government was all powerful. Its huge junks put the Indian Ocean on a market footing. Then a few local difficulties caused it to halt all foreign trade, leaving a vacuum into which Europe’s teeny ships sailed. They were able to do that because neither the Holy Roman Empire nor the Papacy had been able to establish total control.
Both cases show Putin has the right of it. The neocon pursuit of full spectrum dominance is a chimera. It is grinding the United States into the dust. A multipolar world is the minimum requirement for democracy and economic development. The more the U$$A tries to subvert it all by force of arms, the sooner it goes into its totalitarian death spiral, unable to meet the basic needs of its citizens. If it had supported eastern Europe in the ’90s, rather than looting it, just think how prosperous we all would be.
I have a lot of time for Lyndon LaRouche (although he confuses the Crown with the Queen’s person, and inexplicably supports Hillary). He sees American history as a perpetual struggle between the American system (which inspired Bismarck) and the City of London’s attempts to subvert it, with the Kennedy assassination (and the attempts on De Gaulle) starting the latest round of subordination. This seems much healthier than a unilinear recital of the nation’s atrocities, perpetrated by that question-begging “we”.
I have been looking around Ukrainian / Russian blogs and have come across some disturbing information
i) Liashko has put a weird video on his blog site showing him, pitchfork in hand, going round with his thugs destroying slot machines.
ii) The Pravi Sektor manifesto includes intent to acquire nuclear weapons and to use them pre-emptively. Given they control the defense (weapons) and energy (nuclear power) ministries they may be able to do something really stupid.
iii) The Ukies have used flechettes and cluster bombs, as well as white phosphorus (see item v).
iv) The Ukrainians keep attacking Russian border posts, usually where refugees are passing through.
v) A RAND Corporation memo has been leaked outlining a strategy for ‘solving’ the south-east problem. Key points – decimation of activists, destruction of industry to reduce subsidy costs and gas use, destroy Akmetov’s influence, blame everything on the ‘terrorists’, anyone who hasn’t left is deemed a target, cut communications and impose a curfew, use non-conventional weapons, liberate settlements one by one, intern adult males and others in separate camps, males will be tried, property of convicted to be nationalized and given to Ukranian troops, finish ATO by 1 Sep 2014 and maintain curfew beyond 1 Jan 2015.
vi) The police in Donetsk republic are spying for Kiev rather than solving crime.
vii) Most disturbingly, some hackers have gained access to conversations between a highly connected Ukraine lawyer, a German surgeon and someone in the Ukraine militia discussing specific body parts – hearts, lungs, pancreas, kidneys, liver etc.
The good news:
i) The are reports of 4 private aircraft kept incommunicado at Kiev Borispol. They are thought to be ready to take out some well connected people.
I concur with Bakunin. Ukraine is lost. Whatever Poroshenko, Putin or Obama do. The ongoing situation will just accelerate the collapse. Ukraine is already a decrepit bankrupt economy due to the non stop oligarchic corruption and the conflict accelerates this. It is a pity (I mean it) for all Ukrainians but specially for the ones in Novorussia. Putin does probably right not intervening but that means that the people from East will be sacrificed. For what purpose? Ask the current Ukrainian “leaders”, ask Obama, the EU “leaders”, ask Merkel. Do they care? They do not, I am sure.
The history of the US is pretty much a creation of the elite. Robert Parry, the journalist who exposed Iran Contra, exposes one of our founding heroes for the the racist sociopast that he was. How can you expect Americans to not be seduced by mainstream lies when they have been seduced by school lies from Kindergarten on. Columbus the great wonderful “discover” of America for starters and then on from there.

There is one thing that puzzles me about the distribution of forces on the two sides as shown in this map. There are two narrow bands of incursion by Ukies parallel to the Russian border, one form the south west and the other from the north east. If one or both of these incursions could be sealed off at the mouth, then the trapped Ukies could be forced to retreat into Russian territory. That would surely give a legal pretext for Russian action. I guess the problem is the lack of men to do it.
What % of men in the east have stood too to oppose

Everyone, please read saker’s post from a few days ago: http://vineyardsaker.blogspot.com/2014/07/novorussia-hope-for-best-prepare-for.html
and think about what is happening on the ground. Maybe not all is lost. I hope Slovyansk people have their camera on, and post everything they have. That may discourage UKR army doing damage to people there as they did to small out line towns.
Any Russian-speaking person living in Ukraine or what used to be Ukraine has been given a very clear picture of what the future holds for him or her.
I repeat, within the lifetime of the known universe, Crimea will remain Russian… barring of course nuclear war, which, I guess, is always a possibility, and even then Crimea will cease to exist still as part of Russia.
What has happened is exactly what the Russian government planned on. The only possible other outcome would have been a large popular uprising against Kiev, which may still happen.
Brennan went to Kiev for one reason and one reason only: to fly into a rage against his own people for letting Crimea go without a shot being fired. This was the greatest defeat for the “West” in a succession of defeats, starting with Korea. There are still plenty of guns, but butter is getting harder and harder to come by.
Let them eat iPods.
Interesting things are happening:
A few days ago a radar post in the north east corner of Lugansk oblast close to the border with Russia was attacked. The attackers came and went without trace.
On July 5, a radar post on the Azov sea coast, near the Russian border was attacked. The attackers came in small boats, attacked and left without trace.
Interesting. Very interesting.
Slavyansk is not a military loss, rather a prepared tactical maneuver.

“More than a hundred militiamen have been killed in the last three days,” said Viktor, a 35-year-old Slovyansk native who had a shrapnel wound in his leg. “The mood is very bad. It seems that we’ve lost this war. And Russia isn’t in a hurry to help.”
Whither Putin?
This blog contains details of some interesting actions taken by the Ukraine regime.
i) Ukraine calls on Russia to stop illegal flights over the Crimea
ii) In case of recurrence of Russian helicopters or planes of infringement of air space of Ukraine, Kyiv apply the air strike on them.
iii) Ukraine officially closes for international shipping ports of the Crimea.
So, the regime has unilaterally closed the airspace and sea access to Crimea. Surely this constitutes an act of war against Russia, or at least could be argued to be so.
Either Crimea is Russian territory, and the act of war is clear or Crimea is Ukrainian territory, and by the treaty for basing at Sevastopol, Russia is allowed troops, aircraft and naval access to the bases. The acts would constitute a unilateral revocation of the treaty, and given the threats, an act or war?
Following the referendum in Crimea to ask for admission to the Russian Federation and its acceptance, Russia returned military hardware, including land, sea and air craft to Ukraine. These were accepted by Ukraine, so that is surely acceptance that the weapons did not belong on Crimean territory. Following the ‘breakdown’ of the ceasefire, Russia stopped returned such weapons and Ukraine complained. All of this suggests that Ukraine accepted its military had no legitimate presence in Crimea.
Is this a case of I love it when a plan comes together?

They are slowly turning Donbass into a radar blackhole.
The loss of Slavyansk is a blow, but it is better a tactical withdrawal is made rather than to lose the most experienced men. The retreat also saved the citizens of Slavyansk from being caught up in urban combat. The Ukies certainly would have had no qualms about flattening the town have the defenders stayed.
Slavyansk is a battle the the Ukies won. They will go to town crowing about it, and hopefully get over-confident. The battle however is not the war. Remember America excels at winning battles and losing wars.
Darkest hour before the dawn. I have read some hopeful news – we will see.
As for today’s ‘bad news’ – the withdrawal from Slavyansk was to save as much of the civilian population as possible – it was trapped and could not evacuate (remember what Strelkov said in the video yesterday). Now we will see what happens.
So obviously Putin is not going to life a finger as the Fascists gain the momentum and roll up the East
Aren’t there at least boycotts against the Ukrainian Oligarchs by Russian consumers or shops.
Is poroshenko’s chocolates for sale in Russia
You guys can praise Putin’s restraint all you want,. When the massacres begin I am pointing the finger at him.
A great piece from The Soul of the East re “Independence Day”:
Americans are told that they must forfeit their freedoms, the same ones the terrorists supposedly wish to destroy, in order be kept safe from the terrorists that the U.S. openly funds and arms. This state of affairs is telling both about oligarch-run Washington, which cynically creates both the problem and then offers a “solution”, laughing all the way to the bank, and the American people, who have become the proverbial frog in the slowly boiling pot.
….
Unless and until Americans forsake mindless consumerism, nihilistic self-gratification, and allowing the corporate media to do their thinking for them, they will never attain to the true freedom spoken of by Berdyaev. Americans must realize that their true enemies are neither manufactured terrorists nor a revived Russia, but their own amoral, decadent elites, and even more so their own complacency and sloth.

There are a few important facts to glean from the retreat out of Slavyansk.
The double ring of Ukie tanks and APC’s surrounding Slavyansk had holes enough to allow tanks, APCs, trucks and 15 other vehicles out of the encirclement in broad daylight from the photos I’ve seen. Though they say it was night time when they left. Either way, night or day, the encirclement was very porous.
So,too, the militia still insists there is a fighting force in the city.
What we can determine is this was in the cards from the get-go in order for the other centers of resistance to be left alone to build their structure of government and reserve forces and stockpiles in Donetsk and Lugansk.
Who knows the strategy or tactics of it all?
There are other signs we have seen of mysterious events that indicate RF special forces or expert volunteers are keeping openings along the border.
The Azov Sea event fits what I think will be the landing zone from sea of a force that will retake Mariupol. I may be thinking wishfully.
My point of argument yesterday continues— this is a Russian genocide event and Russian veterans should be volunteering to stop it. That takes the onus off the RF and continues the insurrection as a rebellion, not a Russian takeover of Ukraine.
We know less today than ever before. If the Ukies choose to, they have 30,000 fresh humans to slaughter. Reports on LiveLeak from the Ukies show numerous captures and piles of young men killed. Could be from previous events unrelated to these most recent. Clearly, there was treasonous things happening on the 3rd and 4th that triggered the retreat.
We can all see why Putin and Moscow have been reluctant to align with the movement directly. It may have been very thinly constructed and needed much more time to blossom.
Whatever the present status, the mortal threat to Russia continues, the ethnic cleansing will continue and the need for Russians in Russia to protect themselves by fighting in Ukraine is greater than ever.
It is perfectly legal for volunteers to go to Ukraine.
After what we have seen for three months, there should be a division or two of veteran soldiers there to fight the Ukies.
As probably everyone is, I too am shocked about the news. I keep hoping that maybe there is still some kind of masterplan.
Let’s focus on a little bit context for the fall of Slavyansk.
– Poroshenko replaced the defense minister.
– Ceasefire talks were scheduled for today.
– Strelkov announced yesterday that they still have a week or two, but will not abandon their position.
So my amateur guess is that Poroshenko replaced the minister for one who is willing to go through with the operation, and it had to happen before the talks, now I think Ukies have a much stronger position for the talks. Strelkov must have been aware of the situation and sent the false information while preparing for the retreat.
Agree with Andrew @ 12:54 almost entirely. Certainly true of my Middle-Atlantic state (much of it settled from Catholic Northern England). My one caveat is with “Dutch/New York Financialism”, where FDR may have been the exception that tests the rule. His handicap, plus maybe Lucy Mercer before that, may have broadened his outlook and humanized him. Had he lived, things might have been different for a while, although somebody else if not Truman would have eventually reversed course.
PS: Somebody recently mentioned Operation Unthinkable, the May 1945 U.K. staff study, requested by Churchill when the ink was barely dry on the surrender documents, for a joint UK/USA/German attack on Russia. It can be read via Wikipedia, and begins, in Churchill’s words: “Russia is a threat to Western Civilization.” Russia, not the Soviet Union. If the atomic bomb had been tested by then, WW3 would have followed.
The Russian border checkpoint ‘Donetsk’ is being shelled from Ukrainian territory, Vasily Malayev, a spokesman for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) border department for the Rostov region, told Interfax. “The Russian border checkpoint is being shelled now. A lot of people who were at the checkpoint when gun-fire bagan have been evacuated,” Malayev said.

A column of armored vehicles carrying self-defense fighters entered Donetsk on Saturday, a RIA Novosti news agency correspondent reports. Earlier reports said that a column of self-defense fighters had managed to fight their way out of Slavyansk, surrounded by Ukrainian troops, to neighboring Kramatorsk. Some media claimed, citing representatives of the Donetsk People’s Republic, that Ukrainian troops had gained control of Slavyansk, but later Ukrainian sources acknowledged that fighting in Slavyansk was still going on.

Since “hardcore” got so worked up over the Gorshenin Institute website yesterday, I decided to look a little more at it and found a recent survey they took that purports to reflect current beliefs in Ukraine about EU/NATO and the Donbass uprising.
http://gorshenin.eu/researches/41_from_the_revolution_to_a_new_country.html
While cautioning over the use of push-poll type polling research (and also questioning what kind of results they actually got out of Donbass, with 15% of Ukraine’s population), I don’t see the results they publish as too far out of line with previous polls I had noted here and suggest that to a great extent they probably represent something approaching real public opinion across Ukraine.
The gist of the poll is a majority is for EU accession, a plurality for NATO, and a vast majority for a unitary Ukrainian state and feels threatened by Russia’s actions vis-avis continued independence. Interestingly, a plurality and almost a majority is against further military action in Donbass.
Overall, about 25% of Ukraine could be said to support or lean towards anything resembling the Novorossiyan option. If the split in Donbass is 2/3-1/3 or 3/4-1/4, which is where I think it is (and I think Saker has said so also), sentiment in the rest of Novorossiya is no better than 50-50, which is why you don’t see rebellion there yet.
I say this fits with Saker’s comment that current Ukrainian mood – seen manifested in Maidan by the protest FOR military action in the east – is that of the man falling from a skyscraper who thinks everything is good so far because he has yet to hit the ground.
It also fits with results in this Gallup poll reported a month ago.
http://rt.com/news/164076-ukraine-poll-east-west/
Last comment, please keep in mind that according to previous polls, the primary interest of Ukrainians in the EU is a visa free travel regime so that they can leave Ukraine and move permanently abroad. Around 1/3 (!) of Ukraine’s youth population wants to permanently leave the country for a new life in Europe or elsewhere. When you consider this attitude, you realize why many Ukrainians don’t care that EU accession and NATO occupation would be a disaster for their country and its economy – THE UKRAINIANS DON’T PLAN ON BEING THERE WHEN IT COLLAPSES.
The realism of such expectation is obviously up to debtate.
On Slavyansk’s role and purpose and why it was abandoned by Dimitry Steshin – a militai participant.
He not only explains exactly what I have been saying its purpose was (1) draw in all Ukrainian Army attention, (2) deflect attention and ability to respond to the blowing of the Russian border, (3) give space for development of militias and government in Lugansk and Donetsk, but also adds a dimension I failed to remember to mention even though Strelkov had mentioned it early on, (4) the use of the Slavyansk garrison as an active battle training ground for enrollees of the militia to battle harden new volunteers.
I apologize for the poor translation of the selection I am posting. The whole article is worth reading.

In fact, the fate Sloviansk decided in April – May, when the mountain was taken Karachun. Impossible to fully and actively defend the city, over which hangs a dominant several kilometers, captured by the enemy, and set with enemy artillery. Fight without having the means of counter-battery fight impossible, but militia and Igor could. And so that in a few days recaptured many times superior enemy all desire to enter into a contact with the militia fight.
About the assault on the city, as I understand it, they forgot immediately after militia returned back Semenovka. Slovyansk, of course, became a symbol of “Russian Spring”, in fact – he made history. Forever. But the problems in the city were different. Slovyansk pulled over all capable forces Ukroarmii gave effect mobilization militia in Lugansk and Donetsk. Slovyansk gave batko Mozgovoi opportunity to crack border ground and air. Due to this (I do not need to talk about th-tubovskie virtual bronevoyska) in the region actually dripped something, including bought in GUM “Tunguska”.
Slovyansk allowed to organize around the region almost a dozen fortified centers of resistance. Finally, it is grounded Slovyansk most Ukrainian letakov. And “Sky of Slavs” come true in every sense. Finally, Slovyansk gave time to create political power centers in the Southeast, has allowed them to legitimize and, of course, “covered with fire” referendum. And last – through the trenches Sloviansk, with minimal losses, passed thousands of neobstrelyannyh militia and volunteers.
Bakunin:
Some media claimed, citing representatives of the Donetsk People’s Republic, that Ukrainian troops had gained control of Slavyansk, but later Ukrainian sources acknowledged that fighting in Slavyansk was still going on.
Ha, ha!
What an unpleasant surprise that must have been for the Ukrainian Coup Army when they came under fire from an “abandoned” city. Lets see how this all actually plays out before we jump to conclusions.
So, Saker, as an adopted Yank, tell me- do you believe in the official conspiracy theory of 9/11 as well? Or that ‘elite’ US forces ‘killed’ Bin Laden in Pakistan recently?
East Ukraine has fallen to NATO’s neo-Nazis from Kiev. The neo-Nazis will, Jewish-Israeli style, will now embed their military death squads all across East Ukraine. The significance of this cannot be overstated.
The Humans of East Ukraine will now be treated like the Humans of Palestine. Political and social activists will either be imprisoned without trial for years, or simply murdered. Attempts to fight back by the citizens will be categorised as ‘terrorism’, with sickening ‘punitive’ responses by the neo-Nazi invaders. The EU and USA will formally declare ALL organisations representing the citizens of East Ukraine as ‘terrorist’.
Putin has chosen to sit back until the moment to act has long gone, and Russia no longer has any options. NATO and the EU will now flood Ukraine with military assistance to enable the Nazis of Ukraine to hold their gains just as they do the same for the Nazis of Israel in Palestine.
But at least some eyes in the West remain on Palestine, and still report the zionist atrocities there from time to time. Ukraine is a very different issue, and the West (from a media standpoint) will rapidly ‘forget’ anything that is happening there. The people of the West won’t even recall there was a conflict in a year’s time.
However, behind the scenes, the EU and USA will ensure that Ukraine does not slip from their grasp again. NATO will immediately begin building first-strike military bases hard against the Russian border.
During the run-up to WW1 and WW2, there were small numbers of people across the planet who knew exactly what was coming, and despaired at the ‘chattering’ classes who wasted billions of words talking about the ‘complexities’. Today, you know you are hearing from a prize idiot if they describe the ‘Cold War’ as WW3. The monsters win because too many of their ‘opponents’ are busy being ‘clever’.
Had Putin gone in early, and helped the people of East Ukraine, Ukraine would by now have peacefully divided into two nations. Idiots that question what would have happened to the new nation of ‘West Ukraine’ somehow forget that the EU’s incentive to ‘assist’ the tiny extreme-right minority there vanishes the moment East Ukraine is lost.
Does the West ‘hurt’ itself supporting the vile, evil, racist butchers that rule Israel? No! Putin has chosen to believe the West will suffer because of the conflict that will continue to burn in East Ukraine, but in this he is completely wring.

Thanks for the update. There is a saying – once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times is deliberate.
Kudos to the presumed PMGs getting in and out without a trace.

“the primary interest of Ukrainians in the EU is a visa free travel regime”
My understanding is that the agreement signed is just for tariff-free trade. The visa-free travel only comes with full ratified EU membership, which I think takes years. I imagine the process could be accelerated, but it would take months as it would have to adopt the euro and EU laws on harmonization. I don’t think Ukraine has that long, particularly if the gas issue isn’t solved.
Andrew 16:05
In some reports, I have seen claims that Strelkov had 5000 men under his command. Presumably that number is rounded up and not all were in Slavyansk itself. However, moving anything close to 1000 men requires a pretty big convoy.
I wonder if the Ukies have been lured into urban combat, facing people who are well trained and know the local territory in great detail. One can dream!
I’m crying.
