I just wanted to also mention another interesting counter-example of resistance to the mob: Ukrainian Justice Minister Elena Lukash who, when her ministry was invaded by armed rioters went on TV and issued an ultimatum: either leave the ministry or I will introduce martial law.
Elena Lukash |
The mob withdrew.
The Ukrainian government denied that it was considering introducing martial law.
Typical.
Nevertheless, this goes to show that the these rampaging mobs are well organized and centrally commanded by folks who fully realize that the government does, at least in theory, have the means to stop the riots. When these mobs are met with a firm and determined officials, they back down.
There are decent people in the Ukraine and there are courageous people even in the government. The problem is clearly with the spineless fat protoplasm in charge of the Presidency.
In the meantime the Zapadentsy, probably overcome by a “democratic impulse”, have banned the Regions Party and the Communist Party for the areas which they currently control. In retaliation, the authorities of Crimea have banned the neo-Nazi “Liberty” party form the territory of the Peninsula.
Intense negotiations are under way before tomorrow’s session of the Ukrainian Parliament which could see the nomination of a new coalition government if an agreement is found.
Two rumors: 1) Ukrainian weapons depots in the western Ukraine are being taken over by the nationalists 2) the security forces are preparing a 10’000 strong force to clear the Maidan square, possibly tomorrow.
Stay tuned.

Dear brother, the post as well as the comments are interesting
fyi, first paragraph mentions “marital” law — which is amusing, of course, but probably not what you meant.
@asm: “marital law” is funny indeed, but I did correct it. Thanks for pointing that out to me!

To contribute to the discussion about quality of “leaders” in Ukraine. Here is what Tyagnibok said in an interview about why opposition declined the offer to head new government:
“З іншого боку, з якої радості ми будемо приймати спільну відповідальність за все, що робиться в державі. Ви зрозумієте, що значить зараз йти працювати в уряд, притому що держава фактично в дефолті, казна порожня?”, – сказав Тягнибок.
translation:
“On the other hand, why on Earth would we accept to share the responsibility for everything that is happening in the country. Do you understand what it means to go work in the government right now when the country is on the brink of default and the treasury is empty?” – said Tyagnibok.
http://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2014/01/28/7011686/
Apparently, opposition was not fighting for power, because if having money in the treasury is their condition, this condition was never satisfied in the history of Ukraine of the last two decades nor will it be satisfied in the foreseeable future. They just want someone else to take responsibility and blame them for any social problems. It’s not like Yuschenko left the country with the coffers full.
I think the real reason is that they are holding off for a full capitulation by Yanukovich, but this must have been a Freudian slip on the part of Tyagnibok. He knows that with him in the government Russia will stop purchasing their worthless bonds. So let the country burn, but at least *they* will not be directly responsible fot it. What a disgusting creature…
Off topic but for another post perhaps:
The inquisition of the CRIF Sanhedrin has ordered France to raid Dieudonne´s Theatre in search for anything that can be used against him.

Unfortunately this is only available in German:
I found this analysis of the events in Ukraine very enlightening, because so much background info is given by Timtschenko. He is visibly trying to present a sanitized picture of moderation, but at the same time he seems to be an honest guy and always after some prompting by Elsässer, he tells us a bigger part of the real story. He probably keeps some of the stuff he knows for himself, but this interview as well as his article in compact magazin are indeed very insightful.
Please judge for yourself.

Absolutely off topic but I understand you allow off topic remarks and questions:
“Church-Linked Printing House Produces Stalin Calendar”
http://en.ria.ru/russia/20140108/186339195.html
The printing house in question is the Patriarch Publishing Center of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius.
Is this true? Can this be true???
I am flabbergasted.
@Old Auntie
I have come across several references that Stalin was Jesuit trained. These contradict the usual theme that he never completed his studies.

Another counter-example of a no-nonsense leader from eastern Ukraine: Gennady Kernes, mayor of Kharkiv:
http://lenta.ru/articles/2014/01/30/gepa/
key representative translation from the interview by a russian internet news outlet (lenta.ru):
You said before that in the case of attack on municipal administration buildings in Kharkov you will act with “more than just toughness”. Can you elaborate?
Gennady Kernse: This means that we will preclude any chance that someone would even think about taking over government buildings in Kharkov. That’s all I mean about toughness. The existing law very clearly and sharply states what is and what is not allowed.
We will not be giving warnings and count to three – we are adults here, and one needs to understand the responsibility for what (euromaidan supporters) are trying to accomplish.
According to Wikipedia he attended the Georgian Orthodox Tiflis Spiritual Seminary in Tbilisi.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiflis_Spiritual_Seminary
Not a Jesuit Institution. An even if it were, that cannot be a reason for the Patriarch Publishing Center of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergiusto dedicate a calendar to him. Or can it?
Old Auntie,
Alas, the more I study the less I know.

Old auntie, maybe because Stalin restored the Moscow patriarchate in 1944?
While trying to find an answer to your question I stumbled upon this:
http://stalinsmoustache.wordpress.com/2014/01/22/freedom-of-religion-according-to-stalin/
Hardly un gros mangeur d’écclesiastiques, borrowing from Brassens… maybe the Russian Church does not see Stalin through the propaganda lens we are used to.
Maybe the Saker can give us an hint on this.

Stalin, the Papacy, the Orthodox Church, the Moscow Patriarchate:>
First, sorry for the much delayed reply, I am crazy busy these days and I barely can get things done. Anyway, on Stalin:
I have never seen any evidence that Stalin was linked to the Papacy, much less so to the Jesuits. He was a seminarian on an Orthodox seminary though, that is certain. As for the infamous calendar, it was not the Moscow Patriarchate as such which published the calendar in question, but that this was a commercial order placed by the publishing company “Dostoinstvo” and accepted by the printing press company of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. Furthermore, when this fact became known to the Moscow Patriarchate authorities, and with the support of the hierarchy of the Lavra, the director of the printing press (a lay woman called Natalia Ivanovna Kulagina) was fired along with all the employees of the accounting section. A new director has been appointed, this time a monastic – hierodeacon Nikon (Kotov).
I have no love for Stalin, the Papacy, the Jesuits or the Moscow Patriarchate, but I think that the truth about them is bad enough and it does not need to be made worse. Thus, even for my enemies, I always do my utmost to stick to the truth and only the truth.
Cheers,
The Saker
