- Performing a soft release of our reworked Commentator registration software. Commentators can try it out for the next two days. On Sunday Sept 18 registration prior to commenting will be a requirement.
- Problem with gmail not receiving email was resolved by adding an additional record in our DNS (required by Google). Thanks to two of our readers that knew about this requirement.
- Many spambots were able to register in last attempt .. a captcha has been added to the registration page to prevent spambot registration.
- On registration commentators can now enter their preferred password and their comment ‘Display Name’.
- Receiving password via email is now optional but it you decide to skip password email make sure you keep a record of your password.
- If you already have an account just go to http://10.16.86.131/log-in using your old account and password

Logged in and commenting. Working good.. I guess. Question: Will there be functionalities added like getting a message when someone reacts to your post?
additional functionalities can be added but none planned at this time … my favorite is to be able to block/collapse comments of commentators your tired of seeing … herb
Great idea – can you include an option to hide all replies to such hidden commentators?
That was directed at Herb of course!
Also @ Herb, after posting a comment it would be good to be taken straight to where that comment should be, instead of the top of the page, if that is feasible?
I agree that would be better … i will look to see if an easy fix …herb
I was thinking about when “The Essential Saker V: Myth – The Church Fathers Did Not Invent Light Sabers” or something like that will be published.
It’s been awhile and my hard copy (and autographed) “The Essential Saker III and IV” are dog eared due my my frequent page turning for spiritual inspiration.
So is it still in the draft stage or has it been put on hold for the time being?
Big pain in the @ss Herb.
I registered last time this came up, months ago, but now the captcha repeats over and over saying “Error: Google reCAPTCHA verification failed. The response is no longer valid: either is too old or has been used previously.” Even though I had JUST then clicked the boxes with pictures of Biden’s hairplugs or whatever.
Question for you. Does this system narrow down the identities of commenters for easy access to the PTB while making it easier for moderators? I mean, is there additional risk to us?
no additional risk … use any username you want, any display name and any email (if you do not require password recovery by email). not sure about your captcha issue all worked fine for me
I was already registered. Now it says my email is already registered, choose another one, lol. I’ll figure it out and maybe get a different email addie and username. Thanks,VMHS
A problem I have had with the Captcha tech on other blogs is that at times the pictures you are selecting from are quite ambiguous. In these cases I am reduced to guessing, and too many wrong guesses? One is determined to be a bot in eternity, and cannot access the site….ever.

I was getting the captchas correctly but then being told it had taken too long and I had just done it. Weird. I’ll get it. Thanks Antoinetta III.
I had no problems with the captcha here, but I very often have trouble with Google captchas – they just go in an infinite loop and endlessly present new captchas with no error message.
Why sometimes errors sometimes not for me? One possibility is browser setting; but I am using Brave which (unfortunately) gives virtually no relevant settings available except java on/off. Another possibility is the disease of
continualperpetual software development at Google – if that’s the cause then expect periodic trouble in the future at the Saker! Final possibility I can think of is that I have accidentally given Google.com permissions that it should not have – I’ll go and check that.I really detest Google captchas (and the company itself also), but it has a virtual monopoly of captchas – is there no alternative captch that adequately performs?
After that, do one need to log out/log in, or can the new granted Saker Dialogue-Partner status stay permanently open?
you can remain permanently logged in until a system reboot … herb
Just checking
says my email is already in use , cant get past that. unsure if its kept my last attempt to register with you on file of something from a month or so ago its my only email i use. i dont have multiple accounts or anything with you
yes your old account still exists… you just need to login with your password and proceed …. registration is NOT needed.. herb
I am posting this comment using my Saker Vignette registration. Will this also enable me to comment on other Saker articles in the future?
your comment is here so it works … herb
Working fine for me.
Cheers
Herb, I am having difficulty registering. I am using my user name without an e- mail address. When I enter my password, the message says that’ an incorrect password. I’m not sure if you have old info when I tried on the initial registering which was then canceled. I don’t remember registering a password.
Catherine I just deleted your old account please go to /register to register a new account and let me know if it now works.
This time it worked fine. Thank you so much!
Testing … 1, 2, 3…
I don’t see a Login link anywhere, so I suppose at least that I’m now permanently logged in. Yes?
Incidentally, is it necessary to preserve any Saker cookies or storage to maintain that status quo?
in the upper right corner of your browser should be your display name if your logged in .. you can also go to thesaker.is/commentator-menu .. menu item 1 is login/logout … try to login and it will tell if your already logged in .. no cookies that I have added … herb
Okay, when I first posted the comment above, I apparently *wasn’t* logged in, yet it took anyway with just the old name & email approach. Afterwards I *did* log in successfully via the commentator-menu. And on a re-try (logging in), I did get that notification of already being logged.
(All of which probably means everything’s working as it should.)
Incidentally, “Howdy” right back at ya! Once I enabled javascript, I saw that.
Thanks, herb. {smile}
My password is saved so the idea it is incorrect is kind of bogus.
However, I click lost password. I pass the capture.
I click Get Password and I get:
Error: Google reCAPTCHA verification failed. The response is no longer valid: either is too old or has been used previously.
It is not too old, nor has it been used previously. Seems the problem is on your end. It worked for you, great. I see others are having problems too.
i just deleted the account that matched your email. Please register as new account go to ‘http://thesaker.is/register’ and let me know if problems still persist .. herb
same problem as above not working after clicking lost password. previously account never sent me password by mail but name already taken.
As personal policy I do not register to blogs. So I bid you all adieu. It was interesting communicating with you all.
I agree with you. so I set this up so any username is OK and a bogus email is also OK eg no identifying info other than IP and tor or vpn solves that issue … herb
Created a new account which just updated my old one. I have a saker.community log on and saker.is. I used saker.is.
Good work around. thanks
the real problem is:
where is the login button ?
i am asked to enter a text of the comment, enter a name and email and voila!
pleas consider looging BEFORE entering comment so everybody is aware what is doing ;)
best
Heh, apparently my attempts to create an account back during the first test of this worked. It took me forever to figure out what account to use, however, to log in this time. Forgot to put it in my password manager.
I just spent half an hour trying to create a new account, but since the username and email address were already used, that sent me in circles. So happy I discovered my earlier account worked. Now I need to get it in the password manager so I can remember it.
Test post.
I’m using nick and password that I used to register a couple of weeks ago. Logging in worked fine. And if people are reading this, so too the comments system.
@ Herb
Thank you, Herb, for all the work you do, a labor of love.
And the challenges you face to figure out, like the Google thingy, and the script blocking me.
Kudos!

Registering, here I go. Thank you, all, so much.
No commentator registration link found just some commentator menu that’s all “fuzzy” and unresponsive.
Way back when I tried using my university email address to establish a password but no response ever came back to that site (which is an “Outlook” function–at least it says “Outlook” next to the university name). When I tried to use my home email (Via Internet service provider) I was told that my user ID was already taken (probably by myself–see the previous sentence).
This (now via the present connection) is my user ID and this is my home email. Is this gonna work now doing nothing further? Or will I still have the same hangup, assuming I am even recognized as trying to register? Me no savvy computers. Them be too illogical. Fighting the evil gods in the machine, and losing, since 1999.
Woo Hoo!
Working smoothly.
Hi, I am having the same issue as others – I have a username and email but no password; can’t login – could you delete my registration so I can try again? Thanks!
old account deleted .. herb
Works now, thanks!
So, where is this registration thingy??
Thank you, no.
Testing registration. I love this blog and found it from https://voxday.net years ago, but read it religiously since the SMO started.
The Captcha expired quickly, perhaps 60 seconds. So I fill in the other fields first, and the Captcha last, then registered. That worked.
Ideally, the password would be sent under the encryption of SSL etc. Bit you have to start somewhere.
“Ideally, the password would be sent under the encryption of SSL etc.”
Herb, I notice that this suggestion is already fulfilled if I manually insert “https://” in front of the URL of any page that will transmit sensitive info like a password. Buono.
Wow! Worked like a dream! (So far at least) Thankyou.
Assuming this is an absolutely imperative step for the Saker site, and no other options availab le, I will have a go later at registering.
Considering my failed attempts to register similarly as others discribe on this thread with other sites, including ebay, I’m not hopeful ;(
After Sunday, tommorrow, will all unsuccessful attempts to comment dissapear ?
It is a manifest problem with ever increasing digital control, i.e. how, to keep sane and relaxed fulfilling a ‘simple’ request that won ‘t let you, sometimes will, other times saying no you can’t, try this, do that, which one does six times, and then finally without doing anything it works ! – hey prresto – bravo, you’ve done it, you’re accepted into the real world of happy functioning people.
Thanks Herb for all your work, it must be hard, but it would be good to have a clear raison d’etre.
hi, Herb,
The system did not allow me to register with ‘kiwiklown’ because the name is already used. Also that my email is already used.
I have not registered before.
Perhaps you could delete my old details so I can register as a new user?
Thanks.
old account deleted .. herb
Thanks. Registered now.
Seems to work
This time using login !
Testing Testing
I keep getting this: Error: Google reCAPTCHA verification failed. The response is no longer valid: either is too old or has been used previously.
Can’t remember password and the above message appears when I follow the lost password procedure.
the old account has been removed .. try it again … herb
Herb, could you do the same for me please
old account removed .. herb
… and I meant to use my handle rather than my name.
Sorted, tnx Herb.
Same issue as the last time this was attempted:
This username is invalid because it uses illegal characters.
Please enter a valid username.
Username: TravelAbout
I just registered ‘TravelAbout’ … after success i deleted it .. can you try this on a different computer .. i would suspect that somehow extra characters are being generated that you do not see but the computer does.
Herb
All is good, thanks Herb!
Just testing…
Hi Herb – when I click on login – it tells me the login in not secure – if I ignore that and continue – it won’t accept the password but if I click ‘new password’ it tells me the information I gave – my email address ? – is old.
try using https eg /log-in
Signing up with my VPN pointed to either Latvia or Estonia (it moves around) worked just fine.
Thanks for all the hard work!
The link to commentator registration seems to go to the non-https version of the page!
I would stronlgy suggest changing this to https.
Everyone who registers on a http only site is at risk of getting their password stolen…
works fine for me
Hello
It tells me that my username and email are already in use. I tried to register last time, but I never got a key…
i deleted old account .. give it a try now …herb
please delete mine as well so i can start all over again
your old account has been deleted .. herb
