I see that I really need to update myself on this security council meeting. I saw a video from the State Department’s twitter account that tried to paint a rosy account of this meeting. I see now that the meeting was actually much more interesting than the video implied.
As for Brazil, I saw a news report this last weekend saying Bolsonaro is going soon to Russia to talk to Putin. I got the impression that there were a fairly strong economic motivation for tis trip. One interesting point was that the vice-president, general Mourão, defending the trip to Moscow, kind of dismissed this whole circus the US is making about Ukraine as not very important, and something that will die out in its own soon.
I was a little surprised by this trip at this moment because it sounded like a “slap on the face” of the US, something that I didn’t expect from the current government. Your report of Brazil’s behavior at this meeting was also a little surprising, again because of the current government. We’ll have elections this year here in Brazil, and it looks like Bolsonaro is no longer counting on the US. I think the US preferred candidate is Sergio Moro, an arrogant ex-federal judge that recently prosecuted (and some would say also persecuted) Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, the iconic left leader in Brazil. After leaving the judiciary branch, Moro did a stunt as the Minister of Justice in Bolsonaro’s government, but left the government amid a public dispute with Bolsonaro that cost him much public support. He then left for the US, where he worked for sometime, coming back only late last year with the intention of launching his candidature for the presidency this year. Fortunately, he is not in a good position in the polls, which indicates he will probably lose to Bolsonaro in the race (and Bolsonaro may lose to Lula).
Anyway, I think the brazilian government may have seen the writing on the wall, and may be positioning itself accordingly. I’m not sure Bolsonaro is at any great risk because of these movements. He still enjoys some support from the far right, although it is not clear he will be able to extend tis support to a larger group of people. It’d be a little risky to try something against him at this moment. We’ll see.
