This is probably yet another case of way too little and way too late, but I suppose that this is better than nothing. It is, however, still pathetic that it took 13 dead policemen killed by opposition snipers to finally convince the regime to deploy counter-sniper teams. Let’s hope that Yanukovich will not condemn these guys tomorrow morning and blame the violence on them (like he did with the Berkut forces).

Overall, however, a predictable sneaky tactic seem to have been employed. Heavy sniper fire was used against the police, who started to shoot back as they were retreating. The only targets available to them, however, were insurgent most of which did not have guns. This achieved both retreat of the police and an appearance that police used inproportionate force.

And what I fear right now, if the violence is not halted very quickly in Ukraine you are going to see full-fledged, if not civil war, you are going to see foreign-backed-armed-insurgency, if not comparable in every particular to what’s happening in Syria at least similar in terms of its basic dynamic.
Incidentally there is a report by INTERFAX Ukraine that armed groups in Western Ukraine and Lviv have been intercepted by security personnel on route to Kiev. So what you are talking about is something almost comparable to, say, Generalissimo Franko’s march on Madrid, Spain in the late 30s counting on the fifth column (the infamous fifth column) supporters within the city to assist them and so forth. But this is nothing less than an effort to topple a legitimate government in Europe in the 21st century through vicious street violence, the sort one may have associated with Adolf Hitler’s attempt to Beer Hall Putsch in 1923 or Mussolini’s March on Rome. This is the kind of sick fascist filth we are seeing in Ukraine.”

Interesting and revealing interview with a major of Ukrainian internal police troops (these troops are used to secure government district along with the Berkut riot police. The major took his regiment out and they are in the process of leaving Kiev:

Although the guy is from western Ukraine, he does not sound like rabid nationalist. He sounds just like a tired and fed up commander who decided to save his men (who are conscripted 18-20 yr olds) after troops started to be shot at regularly yesterday.
His claim that they had no guns and riot police had only pump-action rubber bullet rifles until yesterday. He is also describing that during the last two days there was regular sniper fire that shot rioters in the back.
Saker, it’s obviously a very fast moving situation in Ukraine – no action is consistently followed for more than 10 minutes. The RADA has now voted to 1) halt counter-terrorism operations; 2) pull back law enforcement officers from Kiev and 3) ban the use of firearms against demonstrators.
Interesting interview earlier with Yats (as Ms Nuland likes to call him) where he effectively acknowledged that opposition politicians had lost any control they might once have had over the forces fighting in Kiev and western Ukraine.
