It sounds cynical, but North Korea won’t be engaged precisely because there is nothing there worth looting. Too silly that the North Korean leadership never got that message. So they continue to starve their own people for a useless military build-up.
Since 50 years a total waste of productivity and quality of life.
Not going to change anytime soon – unless South Korea finally moves Seoul out of the North Korean artillery range, such that the world can leave North Korea alone just as they please.
Its not always resources to steal (though North Korea does have undeveloped resources). Sometimes its location that is important to the US/NATO. North Korea shares a small land border with Russia (not that far from Vladivostok) . And a much longer land border with China, near to much of China’s heavy industry. NATO bases on those borders would be a potential problem for Russia and China.
Oh my god, how is it possible that people write comments without thinking.
Marcel, yankees have imposed sanctions on NK, not vice versa. South Korea is occupied country, the same as yours.
Yes, I know that the Yankees put sanctions up. So what? I suggest to find out:
1) How many foreign supporters of the North Korean struggle actually do something?
2) How many of them are moving over to support them locally?
3) Would they be allowed to?
4) How many North Koreans would like to meet their relatives living in the south?
5) How many of them get a chance to meet? Or call them by phone?
6) How many of those would be allowed to meet in the south?
7) How many South Koreans would like to meet their relatives living in the north?
8) How many of them get a chance to meet? Or call them by phone?
9) How many of those would be allowed to meet in the north?
10) Do North Koreans belief the accounts from their Southern relatives?
11) Do South Koreans belief the accounts from their Northern relatives?
12) What do we really know about the interna of North Korea?
The answers to these questions are telling, in particular if compared to the divided Germany.
To answer 12: It is basically what I can observe from space using the digital imagery that is available to the public. If you want to burn a few hours, you can try to count the number of trekkers and lorries in North Korea to get an idea about their state. Wikipedia indicates that there would be enough domestic resources to build as many as needed. Compare that to the country’s ability and devotion in building rockets.
Regarding my country, Switzerland got occupied by banksters, but so far mostly Swiss banksters. Nothing to be proud of but not yet formally foreign occupation.
While nobody, as Putin said in a recent interview, wants to see the “nuclear club” expanded since the more countries that have such weapons, the more like one is to use them, the North Korean government is not about to start a nuclear war, or any other war, for that matter. But, they are not stupid. They understand that if Iraq or Libya had nuclear weapons and a delivery system that could target major nearby US bases and allies, they would not have been invaded by the US.
It is pure hypocrisy for the US, currently spending billions on developing a new generation of “battlefield nuclear weapons” – the kind most likely to be used – and it’s nuclear armed “allies” like Britain and France, also “upgrading” their nuclear stockpiles, to be denouncing North Korea, the victim of one of the most heinous war crimes in history when the US “bombed them back into the Stone Age”, dropping more tonnage of bombs on the tiny country than were dropped by all sides in the entire six years of WW II, including the two atomic bombs the US dropped on Japan.
If Israel “has a right to defend itself” including the secret and illegal development of nuclear weapons and delivery systems, North Korea has a tenfold better justification. Where is the outrage at Israel’s flaunting of the Non- Proliferation Treaty, or India and Pakistan for that matter? The mainstream media and Western politicians are dead silent decade after decade, while North Korea gets sanctioned and blockaded for exactly the same thing.
Israel, Pakistan, India, and especially the US are many times more likely to actually use a nuclear weapon than North Korea, which with 30,000 US troops poised along its border is rightly concerned with having a credible deterrent to future US bombing attacks and/or invasion. As in, if you start bombing us, we will take out an aircraft carrier task force or the huge US base in Okinawa.
Exactly, that is why they want a nuclear deterrent. And its also the reason the US/NATO oppose them having it. There is a clear solution to that problem. But for whatever reason no one seems interested in using it. Russia and China could sign an alliance treaty with North Korea guaranteeing to come to their aid if attacked. Guaranteeing that an attack on North Korea would be considered an attack on Russia and China, and responded to as such. That would eliminate the need for Noth Korea to want nuclear weapons. But as it is the North Koreans look around them and see thousands of US troops on their borders. A high-tech South Korea threatening them. And another of the World’s most powerful states,Japan,as an enemy. And they see Russia and China not acting as allies. But instead trying to be neutral and staying out of their problems. That makes them think they are alone to face all those powerful enemy states. So of course they want nuclear weapons to deter their enemies from deciding one day to attack them. Its not as if history doesn’t clearly show their fears are totally justified. Afghanistan,Iraq,Libya, and now Syria, shows them what weakness brings forth from the West.
Whereas I mostly agree with your comment, I think it was Laos, Cambodga and Vietnam (in that order) that got the brunt of deliberate US bombings after WWII.
My take on Korea is this – since 25 years unchanged:
The trade model of North Korea is extortion of international monetary, food and oil support by threatening with the destruction of Seoul and its high-tech industry (I never understood why South Korea is so freaking determined to keep their capital and most valuable assets – mostly built after the war – under North Korean threat.). Without that support, the North Korean regime and military would collapse within months.
The reasons that led to the Korean war do no longer exist since decades. Hence, it does not make any sense for Seoul and the rest of the world to keep that conflict alive. To the contrary, everyone would be more than happy to forget about the North Korean issue immediately and cancel support for their regime once for all. Hence the need for the North Korean regime to ramp up the alleged threat level every second year, because they would be out-of-business otherwise.
In the conflict, the only beneficiary is the North Korean regime and its military, whilst their people starve to death because of the economic mismanagement of their leadership. The main reason for their famine is a ridiculous fraction of the male population serving in the military (where they get enough food as opposed to the other people) that is not available for agriculture on their large and fertile territory.
Over the decades, this frozen conflict tortured and killed many more North Koreans than the Korean war did. And these deaths were self-inflicted. North Korea could trade since decades with any other country, provided it would have something to trade with in the first place, and provided it would finally search to normalize its international relationships.
That is a simplistic way of looking at it. North Korea ,like Cuba, isn’t just “able to trade” with anybody . The US and their stooges have imposed sanctions and trade embargoes on North Korea for decades. Their intention has been and still is, to destroy that country by crippling their economy. If it was like you said, there wouldn’t be a problem. But its not,so there is. North Korea also isn’t able to be a “food basket” country as you imply. The land is the rougher, least fertile area of the Korean Peninsula. What they have, are the majority of the mineral areas of the Peninsula (such as they are). Throughout history the North has been the “wilder” less developed area of “Korea”. A comparison would be with 1945 Germany. Where “West” Germany inherited most of the industrial, economically advanced regions of the old German Reich. And “East” Germany minus a few areas, was made up of the lesser developed and poorer regions of the old Reich. Which was one of the main reasons (along with the same Western economic sabotage used on North Korea),that East Germany was outstripped economically by West Germany during the cold war. Certainly North Korea has made errors in developing their economy. But it wouldn’t matter if they made no mistakes at all. The US/Western sanctions and embargoes prevent them from actually improving their economy to a much higher level. When studying economic performances of different countries its important to understand the “reasons” one or the other country is able to develop. If we didn’t know today about the attacks on Russia’s economy made by the West in these last two years. We would blame Putin for the problems they are having (as the Western MSM would have us do). But because we do,its easy to see where the problems are really coming from. And the same is true, except on a far more massive scale with North Korea. They have been under a constant economic attack (and sometimes military)since 1950. Only if all that was stopped. And a level “playing field” was available. Would we be able to gauge how the North Korean economy would perform.
Looking at the map, I cannot see a significant difference in landscape between South and North Korea, except that the arable land in the North is larger.
Speaking of Cuba and the former DDR (East Germany), I would not hesitate to chose either of them a hundred times over North Korea, because the quality of life in these countries was way higher even in their worst times. In my opinion, Cuba is the only country in the world with a socialist system that worked fairly well.
In both countries, Cuba and the DDR, people knew/know about the living conditions elsewhere. In North Korea, normal people know nothing – they are kept in the dark on purpose. North Korea is a big prison for life for 99.99% of its people. The North Korean regime fears nothing more than a mass exodus of the majority of its population if they would let them cross border. And by the way, that’s the reason why China keeps its border with North Korea closed from its side as well.
Eritrea takes a different approach. The country is also poor but benefits, like many other developing countries, of a sizable revenue stream flowing back from their people migrating around the globe. For North Korea, it is out of question because they do not want to “loose” people.
I would say, there is sooo much room for improvement in North Korea itself, that blaming the sanctions sounds weird.
Looking at a map, while helpful, isn’t enough to determine potential of a country:
“North Korea’s sparse agricultural resources limit agricultural production. Climate, terrain, and soil conditions are not particularly favorable for farming, with a relatively short cropping season. Only about 17% of the total landmass, or approximately 20,000 km2, is arable, of which 14,000 km2 is well suited for cereal cultivation; the major portion of the country is rugged mountain terrain.[42]”
“The weather varies markedly according to elevation, and lack of precipitation, along with infertile soil, makes land at elevations higher than 400 meters unsuitable for purposes other than grazing. Precipitation is geographically and seasonally irregular, and in most parts of the country as much as half the annual rainfall occurs in the three summer months. This pattern favors the cultivation of paddy rice in warmer regions that are outfitted with irrigation and flood control networks. Rice yields are 5.3 tonnes per hectare, close to international norms.[43] In 2005, North Korea was ranked by the FAO as an estimated 10th in the production of fresh fruit[44] and as an estimated 19th in the production of apples.”
“Incremental improvements in agricultural production have been made since the late 1990s, bringing North Korea close to self-sufficiency in staple foods by 2013. In particular, rice yields have steadily improved, though yields on other crops have generally not improved. The production of protein foods remains inadequate. Access to chemical fertilizer has declined, but the use of compost and other organic fertilizer has been encouraged.”
No one ,least of all me,considers North Korea a “paradise”. But still when gauging problems there. It is always a bad idea to not understand the empire’s war on them is much of the cause. Much more in all aspects of the society might have become better without that. The same type of charges and threats to North Korea we see today were directed at China until the US decided to use China against the USSR. After that period was when we saw the changes take place that turned China into an economic powerhouse.
As to your comment on Cuba and the DDR. Its important to remember that those states have always been a part of the “Atlantic World”. So we know much more about them. And their level of development was always much higher than North Korea’s to start with. As to Eritrea,I wouldn’t ever think to use that poor controlled state as an example. They are one of the poster-children of the danger involved with Western power in the developing World.
Verdict: Power speaks truth to me. Praise George Soros and the MSM!
On a more serious note: It’s plain to see that Westerners don’t appreciate its adequately armed enemies. Marcel’s blog barfs read just like the drivel of an average Russophobe except for picking another country and people.
Israel perfected the game of extorting international (mainly US) support. But I do not believe it is the only state that knows to play this game.
I stated years ago that the big differences between Iraq and North Korea were the absence versus presence of a powerful deterrent plus the presence versus absence of resources to loot. But the deterrent comes at an exorbitant cost for the North Korean people. You could ask yourself if it is worth degrading the quality of life in your own country below the level you would experience under an eventual foreign occupation. I think North Korea over-achieved this misfortune.
In my opinion, the nuclear deterrent comes at an unbearable cost for Israel too. Besides its permanent civil war, nukes are a key reason Israel needs US support so desperately.
A reunification with South Korea could improve matters for North Korea a lot, if it would be implemented with care and respect for both parties instead of the hasty approach of West Germany swallowing East Germany.
The Nuclear Non-ploriferation Treaty was not signed by North Korea, but was signed by Russia,Great Britain,France,Iran, etc. Was signed by USA but still not ratified
North Korea has been under the ZPC/NWO gun since the day after WW2 ended (if that war ever did really end). The fascists went in initially intending to eradicate NK and use it as stage to try and retake China. That failed and the oligarchs were forced to settle for the way things were before they started the Korean War. The second NK drops its guard, the zionazis/nazis will resume their original plan. Parenti wrote a very good piece about NK, and the persistent ZPC/NWO aggression against that country several years ago. It is still very relevant now.
I see that the South Koreans have started back up their loud speaker broadcasts across the border (a total provocation). I would suggest that the North Koreans, instead of wanting to attack the loud speakers. Set-up their own speakers facing Seoul. And “let er rip” 24/7, with North Korean army music as loud as possible. And with speech’s broadcast as loud as possible from the “dear leader’s” past speech catalog. Give them a “taste of their own medicine” for a few days. And after the millions of people in Seoul are “ready to pull their hair out” and complaining to their government. Then maybe the South Koreans will stop their silly idea of loud speakers. And come to an agreement to never use them again.
The DPRK is not a “socialist paradise”. It is the embodiment of the will of a people to resist their own conquest by the Oppressor White Nation. It should be the natural and total embodiment of the will of a people to fight the White Oppressor Nation. If the resolve of the people of the New Republic of Africa, of Aztlan, of the Quebec Nation, etc, were equal to that of the absolutely heroic people of the DPRK, Amerika and Klanada would cease to exist as imperialist powers. The DPRK isn’t hated by worthless White Nation “Leftists” for any other reason. The Workers Party of Korea has resisted the will of the White Oppressor Nation as only a few others have.
Iraq: No weapons of mass destruction ==> Raped by the Zionazis
DPRK: Weapons of mass destruction ==> Not raped by the Zionazis
Last but not least: DPRK won’t have any of The Supreme Zionazi’s “Open Society”. Excellent determination and resolve!
It sounds cynical, but North Korea won’t be engaged precisely because there is nothing there worth looting. Too silly that the North Korean leadership never got that message. So they continue to starve their own people for a useless military build-up.
