Well, as you say: The situation is c o m p l e x.

I’m of course aware, that Moldovan language is in fact the Romanian language only with a cyrillic alphabet (BTW: All of Romania used a Romanian Cyrillic Alphabet until about 1865, plus while not a Slavic nation they are also Orthodox Christians until this day).
To a certain extent you can compare it to the fragmentation of Serbia (Orthodox) into Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia Hercegovina, all speakng the same language, but Bosnians would never dare to admit that they are speaking Serbian, they call it Bosnian). However, meanwhile Moldova went even closer to Romania:

Well, agreed. Let me explain: I’m not angry because those who are ethnic Romanians living in Moldova (aka “Moldovans”) want to govern themselves. That’s their good right (we know that such things are generally limited to theory textbooks, thanks to Oligarchs, as you correctly pointed out). The problem is that the Moldovan/Romanian nationalist narrative reserves this right exclusively for themselves, while denying it to all others!

They say (and I heard that frequently in Romania, even from those who are still loyal to Communism under Nicolae Ceausescu) “Moldova – IT’S ALLLLLLL OUUUUUURS, the Soviets and Russians have stolen it from us, now we want it back”.

And while Wikipedia is certainly not known for spreading “Kreml Propaganda”, a quick look there already proves them wrong. But they don’t want to hear it:

In fact it might still be part of the Ottoman Empire until this day, had it not been for the Russians to free it in the Russo-Turkish War, 1806-1812.
(But looking at modern day Turkey under Erdogan, maybe half of Europe will soon be turkish again, and in western cities we already have several millions turkish immigrants.)

That’s the point which makes me angry: The Moldovan/Romanian nationalists simplify history to black and white, everything is of course “Romanian” and all the rest doesn’t count.
So if I would follow your line of interpreting history, a 100 new questions would arise:

If Romania really cares so much about ethnicity, cultural background, native language and so on, what would happen to all the ethnic Hungarians who ended up in Romanias new borders after WW1???
Same for the ethnic Germans living in Romania, aklthough their number is only a small fraction compared to theethnic Hungarians??

What’s with all the ethnic Russians, Ukranians and Rusyns (aka RUS’ians) living in Moldova’s borders?

That’s the problem with centralist nation(alist) states who attempt to prevent federalism and regional levels of governance.
And that’s why Russia as a multi-ethnic country admits this fact and organizes itself as a Federation, that’s even her official name. While countries like Chisniau-Moldova, Kiev-Ukraine and Romania insist on ethnic domination of their “master-ethnicity” over everything else.

And history has shown, this won’t work forever, nowhere (see the Basks, Catalonia, Venice, South-Tirol, Scotland, Ireland).

It’s like with a steam boiler: The pressure can be contained. Until it cannot be contained anymore. And then the boiler usually is shattered into pieces.

That’s why I say that I’m angry about Romania’s hypocrisy towards Moldova.

The EU wants it too, to expand their zone of influence. And so wants NATO (in the first place!!!).
During all the recent elections in Moldova the western media have turned all facts upside down, as usual.

I followed the recent election drama’s in main Moldova.
It is a tragedy that nobody in the West seems to know any single thing about Moldova, let alone PMR.

I also feel angry that my Romanian friends always say “Moldova belongs to Romania”. Well, it’s not really good friends, just contacts.

  The Moldovan language is actually Romanian so , culturally speaking, this is more than appropriate. Whether Moldova should join Romania or not is a different discussion, taking into account first and foremost the economics of it.
  
  Unfortunately, the discussion is hijacked by petty politicians for personal gain. On both sides, it’s the extremes that care deeply about the issue, with pro Moscow claiming absurdly that there is no linguistic similarity, and nationalistic Romanians being rabidly rusophobes( I guess not surprising given our common history) and ignoring a more balanced, pragmatic approach Putin has been advocating.
  
  To make things more complicated, Moldova cannot trade Transnistria( Russian population) for territories stolen by Ucraine( Southern part, by the Black sea and Danube Delta).
  
  In the event of a total collapse of Ukraine as we know it the situation will become even more interesting. But it’s political suicide to even have a contingency plan.

      Going back to 1919, it is understandable that the hapless Wilson had a stroke. There is so much historical/ ethnic/ overlap that everybody has a legit claim on the same piece of land.
      
      The Romanians got away from Versailles with a big chunk of land( having the army in Budapest helped) and wanted to hold on to it. Others were not as lucky.
      
      Romania did have a Autonomous Magyar Region until late 60’s.
      
      Due to our common history, it is understandable that the majority is afraid of minorities’ rights as a pretext from redrawing borders( Romania does not recognize Kosovo).
      
      Not everybody was as “smart” as the Tchecks and Poles( that anihilated/ kicked out their German minorities right after WWII) or as well connected as the Croats, that did the same in Krajna with impunity.
      
      Ceausescu was fairly slick, he cordoned off Hungarians by relocating ethnic Romanians close to the border.
      
      Any time there are economic issues, Bucharest ratchets up the anti Hungarian rethoric as a distraction. The most rabid antiHungarians live in the south, and never met Hungarians.
      
      With both Romania and Hungary being part of EU/ NATO, this issue became a non issue.
      
      Going back to Moldova, I have no dog in this fight. I am an ethnic ROmanian, with a grandmother half Russian half Ukrainian from Crimea :)
      
      I was shocked to see the blocking of proRussia parties in Moldovan elections depicted as normal in MSM, but I am not surprised anymore. I only read MSM with a great deal of skepticism.
      
      I firmly believe that Ro governments have been treasonous for the past 25 years and have missed a huge opportunity getting the best out of both Russia and EU.
