In the Sputnik article I posted above they included a curious photograph of an israeli flag positioned in front of an american flag so that the israeli flag looked like it “replaced” the blue star field of the american flag. See:

I think that was intentional. Many of the heading photos Sputnik uses are chosen to make a point. For example, whenever netanyahoo is featured, the photo usually makes fun of him. Same with hillary clinton. Regarding the flags, there are a lot of graphics out in the net showing american flags with the star field replaced by an israeli flag, essentially signifying america and israel are one country or america is dominated by israel. I suspect the photo Sputnik used was chosen because it looks somewhat like one of those flag graphics and it was intended as a subtle message reinforcing the israeli-american relation that was made clear in the article.
