From a live stream I am following on the Internet, the Kharkov local police has convinced the cops from Poltava (loyal to Kiev) to leave. The government buildings are under the control of the Russian speakers. Earlier the Poltava cops attacked the demonstrators with flashbang and teargas grenades but failed to push them back.
There are several wounded people reported though no deaths. Government buildings have suffered, some stories have burned. Still, in comparison to the violence in Kiev this assault was defeated with relatively little violence.
At this point in time, Kharkov is still free and under popular control. The local Kharkov police seems to be on the side of the local people, at least most demonstrators seem to think so.
I have no information about Donetsk or Lugansk.
Will keep you posted.
The Saker
300 “armed” protesters standing against 100 cops may force the cops to think and to talk.
100 determined soldiers in 10 military armoured personnel carriers and armed to the teeth do not have to pay attention even to 1000 civilians.
There’s the danger for tonight.
Music to my ears, Saker.
Hope they stay strong!
They seem to see through this “Western” imposed revolution…
…IT’S GREAT TO SEE SLAVS FINALLY SEE THROUGH THIS CHARADE!!!
I hope they don’t blow it!
Dear Saker,
This is supposed to be in Donetsk.
What do you think of this young man and of what he says ? (I do not understand russian). It seems he is a Letton citizen and has been expelled by the Kiev gang to London, as his government refuses to let him back.

Dear The Saker,
From VOR:
“Russian Foreign Ministry is concerned that additional Ukrainian army forces are arriving at the east of Ukraine. Among the army forces there are also representatives from the US Greystone organization, says the official statement on the Ministry’s page in Facebook.
According to the Ministry, additional internal forces and the National Guard of Ukraine with the participation of the illegal armed militants “Praviy Sector” are arriving to the southeastern regions of Ukraine, including Donetsk.
According to the Foreign Ministry, they are designed to suppress protests of the inhabitants of southeast of the country against the policy of the Kiev authorities.
“The fact that there are about 150 American experts from the private military organization Greystone, disguised as soldiers unit Falcon brings additional concern,” said in a statement.
Foreign Ministry also stressed that members of this provocation should take full responsibility for creating a huge threat to the rights, freedoms and lives of innocent citizens of Ukraine, for the stability of the Ukrainian state.
“We call for immediate cease of any military preparations, that could lead to unleashing the civil war” the statement adds.”

So the US have sent in Greystone – these guys are so hypocritical its disgusting. The coup displaced President looks like a saint now in his handling of protesters in Kiev……says it all….let’s see what the UN Security Council has to say :(

OH boy Saker.
Oh boy.
Been following what is going on as best I can-
I shake my head, again and again and again- at the absurd level of double standards expressed
Why do the low lows stooped to, still shock even me?
Let’s face it the west loves this.
NATO can go on that spending spree they have had their sites on some new weapons- of the latest fashion. of course
All this happening with the 100 anniversary of ww1 looming………..
If the Kiev thugs attack the protestors- who had already requested peace keeper assistance….
”In the event of aggressive action from the illegitimate Kyiv authorities, we will appeal to the Russian Federation to bring in a peacekeeping contingent,” they stated in their proclamation”
Also- there were some elite forces that stayed with the Ukraine when the forces shifted out of Crimea
had something up at my place about them…
of course, I can’t find it right now-
thanks for the updates Saker
A mind-boggling survey published in:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/monkey-cage/wp/2014/04/07/the-less-americans-know-about-ukraines-location-the-more-they-want-u-s-to-intervene/
The less Americans know about Ukraine’s location, the more they want U.S. to intervene
By Kyle Dropp, Joshua D. Kertzer and Thomas Zeitzoff April 7 at 10:18 am
The conclusion was:
“…the further our respondents thought that Ukraine was from its actual location, the more they wanted the U.S. to intervene militarily. Even controlling for a series of demographic characteristics and participants’ general foreign policy attitudes, we found that the less accurate our participants were, the more they wanted the U.S. to use force, the greater the threat they saw Russia as posing to U.S. interests, and the more they thought that using force would advance U.S. national security interests; all of these effects are statistically significant at a 95 percent confidence level. Our results are clear, but also somewhat disconcerting: The less people know about where Ukraine is located on a map, the more they want the U.S. to intervene militarily”.
Another interesting revelation was that:
“Unsurprisingly, college graduates (21 percent correct) were more likely to know where Ukraine was than non-college graduates (13 percent correct), but even 77 percent of college graduates failed to correctly place Ukraine on a map; the proportion of college grads who could correctly identify Ukraine is only slightly higher than the proportion of Americans who told Pew that President Obama was Muslim in August 2010”.
WizOz
Something’s gonna give. I don’t have a good feeling about this unfortunately. All the talk about crazy idiots Americans and the Ukrainian authorities pushing a WW3 with Russia makes me feel uneasy. They must have a plan to carry out (I know that’s a bit rich!). I just can’t see them being suicidal. Would America really risk losing a world reserve currency status, possible crash of their economy and more just to gain exactly what? Why such a rush?
I have compiled at least couple of pages of possible reasons for the current events. However, I am still trying to wrap my head around the rush factor. US/EU have been doing okay so far bringing nation by nation into their sphere of influence and circling Russia with NATO. Why all of sudden to go all-in?
Does anyone else think that they are trying to distract us from something big? An upcoming stock market / banking / economic crash?
Я
WizOz 19:09,
Those poll results are really not surprising. First, Americans know no geography, even about the US. Second, they really can’t think for themselvesL: both the left and the right are subject to a (well-policed) group-think herd mentality. And third, they’re not going to learn anything about what’s really going on, anywhere from either the teevee or their newspapers, all of which are totally controlled by Anglo-Zionist Empire (with the accent on Zionist) oligarchs. Their only real choice is whether the “news” they get slants Neo-Lib or Neo-Con. You have to work really, really *really* hard online to find, sift and then learn anything of value — which is why we are so incredibly deeply grateful to the Saker and all of his commenters world-wide.
“…77 percent of college graduates failed to correctly place Ukraine on a map…”
But they are skilled in putting condoms on cucumbers and what a male should do fu***g another male not to get him pregnant! The US nation is a bunch of very “practical” MFs. We all envy them, don’t we?
Nobody can be supid enough to start a multinational military intervention cause to the things happening right now in (ex)ukraine.
Referring to what Penny said “Oh boy… oh boy” oh boy indeed!
What was the official reason to start WWI? One person murdered in Sarajevo? That was it what called the russians on the plan?
Think of this:
Would’nt a new war be great?
– Clean the earth from the nuclear arsenal
– Let them who wants to fight die in fighting
– leave whats left of the planet to those who (maybe) taking the chance to start from sratch
Of course many would die. But they are also now. If nothing big happens, we will continue to live in a world wich was predicted by George Orwell.
Tabula rasa!
If the neo-Nazi and Zionist putschist regime in Kiev (such a recipe for ongoing stability!)has recruited US private military assistance, then the eastern Ukrainians are in for a very hard time. Just ask the Iraqis or Serbs from Krajina how these thugs operate. I imagine that, as the corporatist fascists in the West seem really to have gone raving mad, the aim may be to expel the Russia minority from Ukraine with Krajina-style ethnic cleansing. The vermin of the Western MSM will blame Putin, of course, as their habitual hysteria, born of innate psychopathy, and a little residual personal insight therefore self-loathing at what they must do to keep their well-paid jobs, is rising to a real fever-pitch. I begin to think that the imminent collapse of the USA and the West, which must be plain to any rational minds left in Western capitals, and which has been made worse by the clear decision of so many to finally undermine US dollar hegemony, has made the rulers of mankind quite desperate to do something, anything, even cause a war with Russia, to somehow escape their fate. I’d expect the compradore traitor scum in Moscow to get orders to set up a ‘Maidan’ there, too, but I suspect that discretion might prove the better part of valour in that circumstance. Any who try ought, I would say, be trucked to the Ukraine border and ejected to their Dreamworld of ‘Freedom’.
“Does anyone else think that they are trying to distract us from something big? An upcoming stock market / banking / economic crash?”
the exact reasons are not clear, but it is almost certainly related to the urgency required to avoid financial meltdown and loss of reserve status by the USD. Printing $80-100B can only last for so long without wreaking major havoc.
If the USD reserve status and banking privileges related to it are lost, the US as we know it is done for.
Thus, to prevent this all stops are pulled. If Russia can be brought to heel USD will retain its status as the petro currency used for world trade and the party can be extended for some time yet.
Additional big reason is that strength of German-Russian relations is growing with every passing year and another couple of years may pass the point of no return in this regard (if this point was not passed already).
Russia is exacerbating the situation by the talk of moving away from using USD in its bilateral trade with various countries. Thus, making motivation for attacking it even stronger.
I find it hard to believe that Putin really wants to see Ukraine fall apart at this point. It is not in Russian’s interests to see a nation made up of Western Ukraine (west and below the Dnieper River) entering into military and economic alliance with the West. The federation notion is obviously the best outcome for both Ukraine and Russia. However, if events spin out of control then Russia may have no choice but to accept those provinces that want to join with Russia.
These are really dangerous times. I wonder if there are any Western diplomats at this point that realize the danger.

America (thought it) had to “draw a line in the sand” in order to keep other post-Soviet countries and regions from aspiring to accede to “USSR 2.0”. Hence the sanctions. A lot of recent US actions however indicate they do not seem to give too much consideration to counter reactions and long-term effects – or, that’s another possibility – they are just desperate because they see things falling apart.
The sanctions were much needed tailwinds for Putin in his quest to rid Russia and it’s commercial partners from the “world reserve currency” hegemony. Imo, unintended consequences. Otoh, since the unravelling of finance capitalism 2008, China and Russia are openly demanding the replacement of the current single world currency by something more international. So the downfall of the petrodollar has to come sooner or later. Worst case: This is the US trying to find a good pretext to use military might to fight their economic downfall.

@Saker
I was horrified reading the title
“Insurgent forces pushed back in Kharkov”, because I thought by insurgents you meant the pro-Russians “insurgents” of the day.
The terminology is confusing. I wonder if there aren’t less ambiguous terms. “Pro putsch forces” would be something I’d immediately understand. “Pro Yats forces” might be more long term though (imagine there’s a putsch in Kharkov tonight…). Or maybe “Pro-EU deluded forces”?
Just my 2 kopeks.

So its ok for the US to militarily ‘intervene ‘ buy not russia ? Americans are silly. But the repeat of US as worlds ‘policeman ‘ allows this sort of chicanery
Saker, I wasn’t sure where to post this, but there seem to be no sanctions against Russia in Rwanda. Let me explain.
The 20 year commemoration of the 1994 slaughter is being held these days in that tortured country. Strangely, eight Russian soldiers stationed in Kigali were given the honor of participating in the commemoration, specifically in a dramatic re-enactment of Rwanda’s history leading up to the genocide. They were the only white people in a cast of 800 people!
Ever since 1994, there has been a very strong sentiment in Rwanda against the colonialists– particularly the French, because of their hidden role in the massacre. As a result, the once-dominant French language is being ditched for English, and people even have been leaving the Papal Church, which, in the old days, also predominated. So I’m wondering whether the invitation to have the Russians participate, albeit to play the role of some of the bad guys (Belgian colonists), is nevertheless a recognition that Russia not only never colonized Africa but also successfully repulsed, more than once, those same colonialists who attacked Africa. Am I reading too much into this?
http://www.npr.org/2014/04/07/300282310/rwanda-honors-dead-celebrates-progress-20-years-after-genocide
I note, too, that Rwanda abstained in the recent UN vote against Russia…
Anyone volunteering for a practical joke to go to Kharkov with an tinselly, azure blue jacket and a white plastic bag full of cookies, and have a photo taken?

As an American, I am sick of our totally corrupt govt run by dual citizens. I hope the Russian protestors capture a few of these Greystone/Blackwater whatever mercenaries and he is put on RT and Russian television. I only wish American would stand up against their police state.

I repost this one, that may suggest a possible cause. It was a coup of the “oligarchs” who maybe felt threatened by a possible move by Yanukovich against them. Their relatives overseas jumped in their support. America is never more hysterically vocal than when the plans of the “chosen ones” are hindered. Khodorkovsky, Berezovsky, Browder are glaring examples. Stalin became, from the good old Uncle Joe, the antisemitic monster, when he cut short the attempts at the creation of the Soviet Jewish republic of Crimea. Maybe the oligarchs wanted to revive the dream!
@Steve Sailer had a post linking to the following NY Timesarticle…
“DNIPROPETROVSK, Ukraine — Two months ago, Hennadiy Korban, a millionaire businessman, fled to Israel to escape retribution for siding with opponents of Ukraine’s president, Viktor F. Yanukovych”.
Was that so? The same NYT was reporting on Feb.5, 2014:
“Fearing arrest, Mr. Korban and Mr. Filatov fled Ukraine for Israel last week. A Dnepropetrovsk judge ordered on Jan. 29 that Mr. Korban be detained and interrogated as a witness in connection with a previously dormant investigation of a 2012 murder”.
The murder in question is likely the murder of Hennadiy Axelrod:
“Two weeks before the blasts, Dnipropetrovsk was shocked by the assassination of businessman Hennadiy Akselrod, known for numerous construction projects and close ties with a local group that is alleged to improperly raid other businesses. Akselrod was shot near his house in downtown Dnipropetrovsk on April 14. Soon after, Akselrod’s friend and partner, Hennadiy Korban, who together with Akselrod survived an assassination attempt two years ago, said he is “much harder to get to” as he drives around in armored cars and avoids public places”.
http://dablogfodder.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/dnipropetrovsk-bombing-update.html
Any relation with David Axelrod, former Senior Advisor to President Obama, Director of a “bipartisan Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago”, Senior political analyst at NBC News and MSNBC?
Or Robert Axelrod Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at the University of Michigan, member of the Council on Foreign Relations?
Or should we go a bit further back in time and evoke Pavel Axelrod and Lybov Axelrod, noted Marxist revolutionaries?

A title from rt.com: “Anti-terrorist operation starts in Kharkov, city center blocked – Ukraine Interior Minister”
Brilliant!
what the thugs did in Kiev was a civil revolution by unarmed people. The same operation by pro-Russians denizens was declared as a terrorist activity.
From now on the pro-Russian “activists” will reach for weapons to achieve anything close to “independence” from Bandera Ukraine.
(BTW what is the artificial state Ukraine? The territory which is called Ukraine now should be incorporated into Russia in one blitzsweep operation lately, once and for all.)
Theodore Svedberg, I concur, so suspect that these ‘pro-Russians’ may, in fact, be a ‘false-flag’ provocation to provide the neo-Nazi putschist junta with the excuse for a big crackdown and possibly mass expulsions of Russians. Then the traitors inside Russia, those taking the Zionazi shekel, will be expected to set up their own ‘Maidan’. The Yankee Reich is desperately reckless, as collapse looms, so anything is possible.
“It sounds as if he [Jay Carney] is five months ago and describing the events in Maidan Square in the center of Kiev,” Lavrov said [regarding ‘external forces’ as quoted by RT today].
If it were not for innocent people being hurt and killed in this Neocon-organized mess I would say:
1. Get the popcorn
2. The next few weeks we shall see a stunning retort
3. After this the Neocons will either play ball or they will be wiped out.
The NY Times reports that the pro-Russians have been “expelled” and arrested.

The reality of the aftermath is not some cosy plantation paradise just bare survival. Industry, gone . farming , gone. The road is littered with idiots spruking war, unfortunately, like the squeaky wheel, it gets the most attention. Our job is to work like hell to prevent the worst happening.

My thoughts and prayers are with the peoples of Kharkov, Donetsk and Lugansk. May they successfully pry themselves from the Western sponsored tyranny that has been installed in Kiev. May Kiev and Odessa also be liberated and for the first time in Ukraine’s short history, be there representatives forming government that are for the people not the wholesale looting. Looting that has been governments in Ukraine modus operandi since the fall of the USSR.
May the Oligarchs be stripped of their assets and accounts and all be returned to the people for the benefit of all people in those areas. No more looting by dual citizens or thugs, no more looting by Western Financial Oligarchs. Enough is enough and it is time for a reckoning by all on this planet against those few who wish to install neo-feudalism and hell on earth.
BTW can we erase once and for all Usury and Debt based Slavery from the annals of existence??

Ukraine Turmoil Leaves Zoo Animals Starving
http://ens-newswire.com/2014/04/07/ukraine-turmoil-leaves-zoo-animals-starving/
“At the Nikolaev Zoo, these thousands of animals are on the brink. There is only enough food left for the carnivores to eat today and tomorrow. The herbivores have enough to last one more week. Medical supplies have run out. These animals need our help right now,” said de Lange.

US actions are mysterious to me. Why did we overthrow Yanukovych? What was our plan? Russia does not seem to have done anything especially strange in response, so there should have been a contingency plan on our part for the events we are currently seeing.
But, on the surface, it looks like we are just flailing about ineffectually. Are we really this incompetent, or is this an elaborate gambit and is there another shoe about to drop?
This strikes me as a very perceptive piece, written in a voice that sounds a bit like yours, Saker. (I know he’s not you, but he does seem to share a lot of your viewpoints.)

Ukraine names Oligarchs and Gangsters as Governors & Ministers
The newly self-elected Ukrainian government is reorganizing all institutions of power, dissolving the special riot police, naming its cronies to key political posts. But perhaps the most indicative of the true character of the new regime is the naming last week of new Governors to head the major political divisions of regions of Ukraine. They include dual Israeli-Ukrainian nationals and notorious billionaire gangsters. This seems to be the “democracy” that US State Department Assistant Secretary for European Affairs, Victori Nuland had in mind when she rejected earlier EU compromise initiatives with the terse comment, “Fuck the EU.”

It looks like Russia is loosing her clout from the first days when the Western world watch with horror and scared to death Mr Putin asking Russian Parliament to allow him invade Ukraine to protect Russians.
Now it all looks as if Russians are on the defensive – diplomatically, economically and medially. Step back here, step back there (by Mr Lavrov) and the Kiev thugs doing whatever they want, legitimizing itself by sheer existence.
The problem is that both China and Russia has military development programs set to 2020. That’s why the West went “pedal to the metal”.
The longer the brawl with the US over Ukraine goes on the more the Russia will be preoccupied with the region and sort of weakened. Time to show the world the second and the third Mr Lavrov. The present one has too much tasks to do at once, I think.

Dear The Saker,
Latest from Kerry:
RT 14:56 GMT:
“US Secretary of State John Kerry squarely blamed Russian agents on Tuesday for separatist unrest in eastern Ukraine, saying Moscow could be trying to lay the groundwork for military action like in Crimea.
“It is clear that Russian special forces and agents have been the catalyst behind the chaos of the last 24 hours,” Kerry told lawmakers, adding this “could potentially be a contrived pretext for military intervention just as we saw in Crimea.” (Reuters)
The lunatics are really running the asylum…..this guy is an utter disgrace as a diplomat.
Also from RT the SBU:
16:22 GMT:
“Protesters occupying the state security building in Lugansk, eastern Ukraine, on Tuesday denied a charge voiced by the Security Service that they had wired the building with explosives and were holding people against their will.
“There are no explosives, no hostages. We do not need hostages to get what we want,” said Anton, one of the protesters who described himself as a coordinator of the action”. (Reuters)
15:47 GMT:
“Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) accuse protesters in Lugansk of having mined the service’s local offices. Threatening them with arms and explosives, they are preventing some 60 people from leaving, the service said, citing information from its anti-terror group.
The SBU urged the protesters to lay down their arms, defuse the explosives and release the hostages. A counter-operation is under way.”
This is ludicrous – saying the protesters have used explosives and taken hostages – sounds like a FF to me! They will use this as an excuse to use excessive force….
“Why did we overthrow Yanukovych?”
The demonstrations in Kiev started after Yanukovich balked at signing a deal with the EU. If he wasn’t signing with the EU, who was he going to sign with instead? Probably Putin and his Eurasian Union. The neocons hated that prospect. They think the Eurasian Union is an attempt to rebuild the USSR. They don’t want Russia to become stronger. The larger the Eurasian Union is, the stronger Russia is. So the neocons freaked out and organized those demonstrations in Kiev. And by overthrowing Yanukovich they did achieve an important goal of theirs: at this point 98% of the Ukraine is not in the Eurasian Union.
More generally, pitting West Ukrainians against Russians is a part of their divide and rule strategy.
In 2012 a mysterious quote of Henry Kissinger was making the round of the net:
“In 10 years, there will be no more Israel: Kissinger”
“The idea of Israel’s inexorable collapse is no longer a taboo as more top brass US officials are explicitly attesting to the fact, with prominent US diplomat Henry Kissinger saying, “In 10 years, there will be no more Israel.”
“Kissinger’s statement is flat and unqualified. He is not saying that Israel is in danger, but could be saved if we just gave it additional trillions of dollars and smashed enough of its enemies with our military.… He is not offering a way out. He is simply stating a fact: In 2022, Israel will no longer exist,” political columnist Kevin Barrett wrote in an article published on Press TV website on Sunday.
He also pointed to a study commissioned by the US Intelligence Community (IC), comprised of 16 US intelligence agencies, earlier this year, titled “Preparing for a Post-Israel Middle East,” and pointed out that the content of the IC’s report corroborates Kissinger’s contention”.
From 2005 at least we started to hear news like these:

By Tamar Runyan, October 17, 2012 9:00 PM http://www.chabad.org/news/article_cdo/aid/1991671/jewish/Largest-Jewish-Center-Opens.htm
“The world’s largest Jewish community center opens to the public this Sunday with a 10-hour schedule of events, but the buzz around the new Menorah Center in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, is palpable following the private opening yesterday of its Jewish Memory and Holocaust Museum.
Built at a main intersection between the left and right banks of the Dnepr River, the seven-towered 538,000 square foot center was spearheaded by philanthropist Gennady Bogolubov, president of the local Jewish community and chairman of the Ukrainian Jewish Congress, and his Privat banking partner Igor Kolomoyskyy….Designed by architect Alexander Sorin, the center will serve as a platform for the ongoing revival of the local Jewish community, which has been headquartered at the historic Golden Rose Synagogue under the direction of Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetzki….Oleksandr Vilkul, chairman of the Dnepropetrovsk Regional State Administration, addressed the crowd, calling the opening of the Menorah Center a landmark event, not only on the scale of the Dnepropetrovsk region and the wider nation of Ukraine, but on a global level as well. Vilkul, who expressed deep gratitude to Bogolubov and Kolomoyskyy in building the center and museum, said it was no coincidence that the impressive center was built in one of the childhood hometowns of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory”.
