Check out this video – its mostly combat footage with some commentary in Russian (which I will summarize below):
There really is no point giving you a word for word translation, but a few comments are worth making:
First, the Syrians are advancing, rather easily in fact. During the two days of combat it took them to take the fortified position shown in the footage the Syrians only suffered one casualty – a wounded. The Russian reporters are explaining that the insurgents began to retreat almost as soon as they realized that the Syrian assault teams would be attacking them from the sides. In other words, the morale of the Syrian Army is excellent, the one of the insurgents very bad.
Second, the type of fortifications shown are a far cry from a truly well defended position. Clearly, this is not Grozny or Bint Jbeil. From an engineering point of view, these positions are mediocre at best, poorly camouflaged, and unable to protect against a determined assault.
Third, the type of tactics used by the Syrian military also indicate that the insurgents are not very skilled combatants. Judging by this footage, they are not taking any serious measures to protect their flanks nor are they providing their tanks with direct infantry support. Furthermore, the Syrian infantry seems to be very lightly armed – just some assault rifles, a very far cry from the heavily armed assault groups the Russians used in Grozny (which had machine guns, anti-tank missiles, bunker busting fuel-air explosives missile launchers, grenade launchers, sniper rifles, directional anti-personnel mines, etc.). Frankly, what we see is something like a platoon or so of foot soldiers and three tanks. Hardly the kind of force which would have to be thrown at a skilled and determined defense.
In fact, the Russian reporters are saying that the only type of “resistance” they met is some mortar and some sniper fire. If that is all the insurgents can throw at the Syrian military, things look pretty bad for the “FSA”.
Of course, this video shows only a few (selected) minutes of footage made in one specific location, but I have to say that I like what I see very much. If that is what is happening elsewhere, then the tide has really changed in Syria’s favor.

PS: and if you wonder why the faces of the Syrian soldiers are hidden in this report, it is because the “freedom loving and democracy promoting” insurgency kidnaps, tortures and kills the family and relatives of soldiers whom they can identify. Robert Fisk also reported that in his articles.
Third, the type of tactics used by the Syrian military also indicate that the insurgents are not very skilled combatants.
They probably thought that ZATO air cover would come into play, similar as in Libya.
The NATO attack on Libya almost certainly encouraged many of the Syrian rebels to join the armed insurgency against Assad and helped lead to the Syrian tragedy.
@Everybody:
Today I got a rather rude post which I decided not to allow because it directly insulted another person who commented here. To the author of this post I will say this:
1) if you cannot write your comment in a minimally polite language, please do not post here.
2) while I will never ban ideas, I do not accept insults directed at other people.
3) insults directed at me I will allow.
4) it is rather funny that you would explain to me, who is Russian, that ANNA is staffed by Russians. I chose to call them by the name they call themselves.

There’s an old adage. “absence makes the heart grow stronger” or something along those lines(I paraphrase).
For some unknown reason I have not visited your blog in quite awhile. Upon returning this morning I am confronted with three or four bright shininhg stars that have absolutely refreshed my spirit and soul.
The truth is a wonderful sauve. Your reports on Syria, Russia and Iran have given me new life. Wallowing in monstrous “Anglo” media lies is a slow death. Something I can avoid by visiting your blog something I will begin doing again.
I do worry about these new
attacks on Hezbollah by this Anglo Zio media. It seeems like their next target.
Whatever, I’ve beeen wandering lost in the desert and have rediscovered a lost oasis. Thank you soo much for these reports Saker!!
I will immediately link your blog to my blog. Your reports are vital truths that need to be desemminated far and wide… with your permisssion.
@Peter: Dear Peter,
Thank you for your very kind and, frankly, undeserved words of praise. I think of my blog as a mirror which does not produce any light by itself, but which can reflect the light produced by others. You mention Syria, Iran and Russia – well, I also feel elated and encouraged by what I see happening in these countries. Yes, of course, these countries are all far from being perfect societies, and they all struggle with many problems and sins, but there are many truly decent, honorable, courageous and highly principled people there who have taken upon themselves to resist Evil and to stand for what is right. It is the light of these people which refreshes your – and my – souls.
As for the Anglo Zionists media, it has the same effect on me as it does on you. This is why I ditched my TV many years ago, while I never read any corporate magazines of newspapers, why I don’t listen to the radio and why I get all my news off the Internet, from sources I have carefully selected. If/when I do force myself to read what these guys have to say (say like the BBC) I do that like an entomologist who studies the behavior on an insect and tries to understand what makes it tick. That is how I read the Soviet “Pravda” in the bad old days of the Cold War.
As for my reports, I don’t consider them as mine at all. This is why I put this disclaimer at the bottom of the page:
Please feel free to copy, publish and pass on any part or all of the original contents of this blog. No authorization from anyone is required to use any of the original content published here.
In my mind, this blog is about the truth and I don’t “own” the truth – I am only sincerely trying to establish it and share it with others when I find it. This is the main reason why this blog is anonymous – because its not about me, not about a person. Only ideas. And since I don’t make a penny of it anyway, I most definitely will not claim copyrights over it or any other such capitalist nonsense :-)
So link and copy all you want – it is yours as much as it is mine!
Still, thank you for your kind words. Its words like that which keep me going in, sometimes, rather discouraging circumstances. I am immensely grateful to you, and others, who keep me going. Please drop by more often as you will always be welcome here.
Many thanks and kind regards,
The Saker
This is actually an interesting YouTube channel reporting to show Chechens in Syria. I don’t know how legate it is though.
Chechen Mujahideen Making Weapons in Syria
http://youtu.be/3Pj3d_dO9uU
@jack: VERY interesting video, thanks! I was wondering what those Chechens in Syria were like, and now I can tell you – I am really not impressed :-)
First, they don’t even speak Chechen to each other, but in Russian. Second, they sound like uneducated hicks, and all they do to give their rednecky Russian pronunciation a veneer of “Islam” is to constantly intersperse their sentences with totally misplaced “Inshallah” and “Allahu Akbar” which no real Muslim would ever do. Oh, and they call each other “brother” and speak of “kafirs”. I bet you these “Muslims” are common criminals who escaped from Russia after producing a mile long rap sheet and who found a new life playing “scary Chechens” abroad.
This also explains the rather primitive fortifications, the low morale and the poor tactical skills. The Chechens of the generation of Dudaev were scum, murderous psychopaths and terrorists, but they had a least received some rock solid training in the Soviet military. The guys on this video look like complete amateurs to me. They are oh so proud to show of their expoives, like some pimply teenager who obtained a copy of some “terrorist’s cookbook”.
No wonder the Syrian military makes minced meat of these guys and I think that Russia owes the Syrian a huge debt of gratitude for dispatching all this scum to where they belong: hell.
Cheers,
The Saker
Ok, another attempt ;)
1. “ANNA” is NEWS agency from RUSSIA (http://annna-news.info) registered in Abkhazia (some protection from possible law attacks if official Russian position on Syria will change). ANNA bringing the truth, anna is always under DDoS attacks; info attacks. ANNA was founded by Marat Musin, the best (for me) Russian crisis expert (professor). Most of reporters are volunteers from Russia, ANNA works not just in Syria. ANNA has no financial sources, only donations (Ok, if it is clear, it is good)
2. Where do you (or who are) seeing Chechen people in Syria? Don’t you think American government tries to make people thinking Chechens are terrorists? You all should think about it. ANNA agency have few volunteers from Russia or Syria. If you believe Chechen soldiers/people are fighting in Syria, good luck, you can’t see the difference between false and true in media.
3. Sorry my old comment was little aggressive but i very angry if i see some people are believe in and writing about it.
Yeah, and sorry for bad eng.
@anonymous:
1) ANNA. I know that! I called it “Abkhazian” simply because that is what they called *themselves*, do you understand?! Nobody is saying that they are actually staffed by Abkhaz people, ok?
2) Where do you (or who are) seeing Chechen people in Syria?
On the video posted by Jack,for one thing. Besides, this is a well known fact: most of the firepower of the so-called “Syrian” insurgency is not Syrian at all – but from foreign mercenaries, international terrorists including Chechens, but also Saudi, Yemeni,Libyan, Egyptian, Tunisian, Pakistani, etc. And, of course, NATO special forces behind them.
3) Sorry my old comment was little aggressive but i very angry if i see some people are believe in and writing about it
I understand. But please understand that anger does not help you make your point. You are much better of calming down and writing in a logical and polite manner.
4) Yeah, and sorry for bad eng.
No worry AT ALL :-) There are many posters on this blog whose first language is not English, including myself (my first tongue is Russian, I learned English only as a 4th of 5th language).
Your blog is very interesting, ok. ;)
Thank you for the video.

@Anonymous
Chechen sources themselves confirm that Chechens were killed in Syria. One of the first high profile foreign soldiers to be killed Rustam Gelayev was the son of a prominent Chechen rebel leader.
