“… The 7 October 2015 – a milestone in the history of geopolitics – Russia’s first battle use of sea-based cruise missiles
On that day a volley of cruise missiles from the main shock complexes “Calibre-NK” [Калибр-НК] was made by the flagship of the Caspian flotilla corvette “Dagestan”, project 1161, and small corvettes “Grad Svijazhsk”, “Uglich” and “Veliky Ustyug”, project 21631.
The 26 rockets released on the Caspian sea traversed 1.5 thousand kilometres across the territory of three states and successfully struck 11 targets of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Syria. The sailors, missile forces, aerospace forces, providing precise targeting, including using a satellite global positioning system GLONASS, have all collaborated well.
“Tsargrad TV” analyses the “competitive advantages” of this modern weapon mounted on combat platforms, used in three environments:
– Surface ships and submarines (both diesel and nuclear multi-purpose ones of project “Ash”, the “Ash-M”)
– Shore based (mobile missile complex “Calibre-M”)
– Aviation based
The family of ships “Buyan-M” are ships of the third rank that are designed primarily for the implementation of patrol functions, protection of coastal waters and in the most rare cases, the implementation of strikes on minor sea targets.
And we just saw how these little ones learned to perform strategic tasks. In this role they are used for the first time and showed that their versatility is justified. No wonder, upon learning about these impacts and capabilities of our arms, how badly upset were our colleagues-opponents from NATO, the leaders of the American aerospace NORAD system, as they discovered that they had no “antidote” against the new Russian remote high-precision weapon systems.
The open press only publishes data on export versions of missiles of this family, whose range is limited to 300 km, but the principle of action of these rockets and their construction allows getting a sufficient understanding of their “siblings”, the missiles of “Calibre” complexes, which already started their work on the bunkers and bases of terrorists in Syria.
Complexes “Calibre-NK” which are installed on most combat ships of new projects, starting with the “little” 900-ton displacement ones – the small corvettes of project 21631, allow firing the anti-ship modifications of missile 3M-54/3M-54-1, and winged long-range missiles 3M-14 of the surface-to-surface class.
The anti-ship cruise missiles have a warhead weights 200 and 400 kg respectively, the maximum flight speed of up to 700 metres per second.
The formation and entering the flight mission and pre-launch preparation are achieved by a universal fire control system. At the present time, foreign direct analogues of the missile system Calibre-NK simply do not exist. This complex was created in the Experimental Design Bureau “Innovator” (Ekaterinburg) [ОКБ «Новатор» (Екатеринбург)]. For Russia, this is the first launcher for vertical launch missiles.
The complex Calibre-NK is located under the deck of the ship. Its vertical placement is more compact and provides the least vulnerability to enemy strikes. In addition, this setting can ensure the storage and the start of another 3 types of anti-ship rockets, including anti-ship missiles “Onyx” and long-range cruise missiles.
The flight of the cruise missile follows a predetermined route, in accordance with the intelligence information about the presence of anti-aircraft defences and the target position. Missiles are able to overcome a well-developed zone of anti-aircraft defence thanks to the autonomous guidance in the “silence” mode during the main leg of the journey and the very low altitude. Navigation of the missile is done on a rather complex trajectory, using up to 15 preset reference points, the missile can approach the target from a given direction to bypass the defense systems and islands.
Anti-ship cruise missile 3M-54 consists of a starting stage, a low-flying subsonic winged cruising stage, and a supersonic low-flying combat stage with a solid rocket engine. The first stage of the rocket is used for leaving the rocket launcher and for the acceleration. After this, the starting stage is separated, the cruising engine is started, the fins and the wing are unfurled, the missile is lowered to an altitude of 10-15 meters and it flies to the target using an on-board inertial guidance system.
The second – cruising stage – enables the flight of the missile on the main part of the trajectory, bringing the rocket to the target area. At that time is enabled search and acquisition of the target by an active homing head, upon which the third – combat stage of the rocket is separated. It is used to overcome the air defense system of the opponent at supersonic speed.
For a LRCM (long-range cruise missile) 3M-14 there is no need to gain supersonic speed and perform acrobatic manoeuvres to defeat the target protected by a layered defense and manoeuvring. Its main “clientèle” – are not hurrying anywhere, as they are stationary objects of various purposes. Therefore, the task of LRCM is to start in a remote and secluded place, to quietly reach the target, maximally hiding by the shape of the terrain, and defeat it at a designated place.
The export version of the 3M-14, as we have noted, has an operating distance of up to 300 km, and is taken into service in Russia in the usual 2600 km range. Its conventional warhead has 450 kg of explosives. With a nuclear warhead, which is definitely lighter, 3M-14 flies significantly farther. As noted by Oleg Odnokolenko of the “Independent Military Review” [Независимое военное обозрение], “someone cites the number of 4 thousand km, another – 5 thousand km”. And President Vladimir Putin has officially announced that Moscow already has airborne LRCM with a radius of 4.5 thousand km.
In the Caspian, already four ships are equipped with the complex “Calibre-NK”, the ones that attacked the IS targets on 7 October. In the Black Sea there are two small rocket ships so far – “Serpukhov” and “Zelyoniy dol”, plus a diesel submarine of project 636.3 “Novorossiysk – that are also armed with “Calibre”. In 2016 there will be several. The “long-distance version” of 3M-14 allows to target the Pillars of Hercules [Gibraltar!] right from the berth of Sevastopol.
Keep in mind that ships, and especially submarines and aircraft may be in international waters or in international airspace.
This info-graphic visually presents the “geography” of the possible scope of LRCM complex “Calibre” at a maximum distance of 5 thousand kilometres when running solely from the territory and waters of the Russian Federation.
As you know, the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty signed by Moscow and Washington in 1987, still prohibits Russia to deploy land-based missiles with a range greater than 500 km. But the missiles based on sea and elsewhere do not fall under that restriction.
In this regard, we can say that on 7 October took place the birth of a new geopolitical tool of Moscow. Russia got what she never had – an effective tool of non-nuclear deterrence, which, however, can be even more long-range and nuclear.

Thanks for this detailed report. Russia is not only stabilizing the area but sending a message to Washington in the only language it understands: power.
Not sure how much weight these kind of have with reality but even if they are a quarter of what is reported then things are rather serious. Saudi generals are part of the wealthy, they dit not get to those posts because of their tactical experience. The grunts are all foreigners and I bet there is not a single sunni Saudi there so all the deaths we are hearing about are Pakistani, Bangladeshi and other Muslims from 3rd world countries who wont be missed but the officers like the british army are all locals unlike the British who actually had some training. I seen 2 generals in the list so that would cause a huge procession about dying for their country and such..
The Zionist American genocidal murderers of millions of innocent civilians, from Vietnam, to Indonesia, to Chile, to Guatemala, to Libya, to Iraq, to Afghanistan, to Ukraine, and Syria, and Palestine, and dozens of other nations, receive not a mention of being used “as proving ground”s. Clearly the ‘West’ no longer “takes notice” of their rivers running red with blood.
The important and powerful NYT article reveals a worried preoccupation on the part of the terrorist Oligarchs of the absolutely astounding, courageous (on the part of the Russian, Syrian, and Palestinian people and their leaders), and revolutionary Reversal of History that began in Syria 3 weeks ago.
The worried (to the point of panic) article in the NYT even recalls the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939, as a warning to the foolish cowardly and gullible Sheeple of the dangers of the Russian actions in Syria.
1. What could they mean?
2. How dare they remind readers of the Spanish Civil War!!! I’ve only done that on a half dozen occasions on this very forum. I think I’ll sue them for plagiarism. Let them pick a different civil war. Have they no originality?
3. All seriousness aside; The Spanish Civil War – was a vital confrontation between good and evil that presaged the most bloody World War in history. The victory of the Republic, for which Durruti, Hemingway, Orwell, and many others fought might have reversed the tide of fascism. Today, the victory of the Syrians, and the Novorossyans, might also reverse the tide of fascist militarism and give the peoples of the world a chance to breath free.
The NYT propagandists of the Oligarchs understand the vital stakes of this conflict. For once they have it right. It is the Spanish Civil War all over again. This time we will win.
