Well, if the Turks are evicted then Iraq can take over the base for their own use if they want it. The Turks should be evicted anyway since they are an invading force. Letting Turks just take over land, shoot down airplanes, etc. is a very bad idea. If that is not resisted they will overrun everything and take over, and delaying resistance will make it that much harder.
Turkey wants to split Iraq into a kurd/sunni country.. Thats what the meeting was all about. US seems fine with it. So what happened to IS? Erdo says Sunni’s have no power in Iraq and he wants to change that. US bombed the shia militia when they were going to cut off mosul. So the US wants the IS and Kurd areas to be split from iraq. And Turkey is the boots on the ground. Operation save mccains terrorists…

No, Putin is not going to ditch Assad who is an elected Head of State.
Just think about the mobilisation at Syria – on the ground Syrian Arab Army has only about 5000 to 7000 strong Hezbollah and about 5000 strong Iran Revolutionary Guards on their side fighting for last 4 years, against ISIL plus half-a-dozen Wahabi armies fielding no less than 100000 troops (core of which is about 50000 battle-hardened ex-Iraqi Army of Saddam Hussein).
If Russia can pull some of the smaller groups to their side fighting against the ISIL army, why not do so ? Importantly, Syrian army and its allies need to be extremely cautious about high possibility of duplicity and treason by these small groups !
All the major losses to the SAA were by traitors inside the SAA itself. Allepo was lost by Syrian intelligence letting in 600 or so rebels back in who brought back with them 6000 jihadis. Many of the tanks were sold by the crew itself to the jihadis.. Let alone all the US arms that were smuggled by Turkey into the country, the officer core trying to get any money to run off to make love to merkels Germany is one of the main causes for this misery. Then again we saw most of the same things in Saddam’s Iraq and why the US easily walked in. Lets hope the latest officer corps have a higher value of ethics than the old.

Unfortunately it appears a poor and ambiguous translation by RT is the source for this. It is already being used by the “lets paint Putin as a lunatic” crowd, and taken to mean that Russia’s Syrian plan has gone badly awry.– why else would he need to “rattle the nuclear saber” at the terrorists?
In a Russia Insider article “Putin: I hope we don’t need to go nuclear” (Dec 10), that again (wrongly I think) says Putin threatened ISIS, there is a comment at the top by somebody named “Slavix” who offered an alternative translation. He says a more accurate read is “nukes not needed for ISIS and hopes never needed for any purpose”.
If VVP did not say nukes may be needed for ISIS I wish the Kremlin would clear up the confusion.

I totally agree with you that it’s vitally important that Putin’s exact words need to be made clear, either by the Kremlin or RT, lest his intentions are totally misconstrued.
Besides using nukes (even very low yield one’s) in the ME against ISIS would tactically make absolutely no sense whatsoever, given how the terrorists are in small pockets intermingled with their innocent civilian victims.
That kind of utter stupidity is exclusively reserved for the Israeli and US “defense” (read offense) departments which during the height of their anti Iranian propaganda campaign threatened to use nuclear tipped bunker buster bombs to penetrate Iran’s deep concrete enforced underground nuclear facilities.

Everyone is changing what he said and making a big deal out of it. It was pretty clear what he said, the missile can carry nukes but it wont be used against IS. With the rest of his comments about protecting the troops in Syria. Anyone who followed the statements would take it as Russia wont leave Syria and can not be forced to do so. If nato attacks in overwhelming force they have the option of using nukes.. Which is part of the new doctrine of Russian forces posture released in 2012 or so. Which changed into using nukes even against others if the chance of Russia losing is apparent. Before it was like china which has a no first nuke usage policy and india which has a no nuke against non-nuke states but maybe they are also looking at a first nuke usage but not sure with all the talk. US also has a first use and against non-nuke states policy. Any statements has to be considered as part of the military doctrine which exist. If the US said something like that, it immediately should be taken as a threat that to evict Russians from Syria they would nuke the base if needed. In a defensive posture like Russia’s it should be taken only as a defensive measure.
I fail to see some of the headlines saying Putin is going to nuke Raqqa.. As if the 50,000 people living there have no meaning. Also remember, Assad has never carpet bombed cities taken over by terrorists. Not even electricity or water supplies were cut. Even schools and hospitals are still paid by the state. Most likely he would leave rather than allow such a thing and stay inside the coastal areas which are under their control and can not be taken over without nato boots on the grounds anyway.
Also remember, US planned to nuke the border with china and korea so Chinese could not help the Koreans against the US.

I think Russia (and certainly Putin) learned from the mistakes of Afghanistan. Syria is a totally different country than Afghanistan. With a tradition of fighting off any foreigners that entered the country. While Syria ,has been a trading crossroads for untold centuries.Used to the presence of foreigners. I think a better comparison might be with Chechnya. With Putin thinking of Assad as his Syrian version of Kadyrov. If he’s not up to it,Putin needs to find one. Winning in Syria,pacifying the country,and developing its economy to prevent future troubles.Is going to take a lot of hard work. Its not going to be pretty,just as Chechnya wasn’t. But if done right and completely,we can see in Syria,the same progress,peace and stability that Kadyrov has brought Chechnya. An Islamic and secular society co-existing together,with equality for all its citizens. There is a lot that can be done for the economy in Syria with peace. Oil and gas resources to be developed. Ports to be expanded. Pipelines to be built. And tourism to be encouraged.Except for the malice of her neighbors,there is no reason Syria shouldn’t become a prosperous state.

The Syrian Army announced it defeated Islamists from the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front north of Latakia, near the border with Turkey.

There are Many People who think that the Syrian Opposition Groups that attended the Sham conference on Law and Democracy in ISIL Saudi Arabia have made matters worse for themselves to be trusted by the Syrian People.
