Hi Saker, I hope you came well rested from your break. I’ve been watching Syria news, especially about Aleppo thinking “Where are Russians?”, but I also read about endless meetings between Lavrov and Kerry. It seems to me that they are hammering a deal that will include not only Syria and Ukraine, but also the Armenian/Azerbaijan conflict and NATO on Russian borders. But I can’t see any possibility of compromise between them because to win (Syria and Ukraine) is paramount for survivor of both countries. What’s your take on this?
That link about the White House chimpanzee vs. Russia would be http://blogs.rediff.com/mkbhadrakumar/2016/05/02/obama-defines-his-russia-legacy/ . An excellent article, as usual, coming from Bhadrakumar. (My only only objection would be his using the expression “cerebral mind” in reference to the central nervous system of a bona fide simian…)
I don’t get it, a total ceasefire for Aleppo ? I thought the Syrian Army was poised to take it, and end the misery. What the heck is wrong with Lavarov ? Always snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Same shit as in Donbass (Debaltsevo, Mariupol, Donetsk Airport several times).
Meanwhile it almost looks like sabotage, although I actually always respected Lavrov and trusted him when I saw him speaking.
May be something from Sun Tzu: never try to totally defeat/humiliate enemy, instead, show him the path of retreat. If that is the strategy ( I may be wrong, but Lavrov and Kerry do talk all the time intensely), it saves lives, ammo, face, but it does take time, and ultimately may lead to constructive and respectful talks, which is what Putin wants, as he said so many times. We have seen examples of that many times in the last 2 years.

Representatives of the Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) of OSCE registered the placement on the line of contact of the 24 Ukrainian howitzers D-30 that is forbidden by the Minsk Agreements, stated the official representative of the People’s Militia Major Andrey Marochko.
He noted that the SMM OSCE continues registering the facts of the rules violation of heavy weapon withdrawal from the line of contact by the Ukrainian party.
Thus, on May 3 they specified in the report that on the territory which is under control of the Ukrainian gunmen they had registered the placement of the forbidden weapon again, namely – 24 howitzers of D-30.
According to him, it follows from this that the leadership of Ukraine doesn’t leave the idea of the solution by force of the Donbass issue.
The People’s Militia didn’t stop the observance of the agreements reached in Minsk, even in contrast to constant provocations by the Ukrainian gunmen and false charges in shellings. Unlike the opponents we strictly observe the silence regime.

well it is a two day ceasefire-I presume if it is broken by al nusrah/al quaeda affiliated groups9 ie USA funded moderate opposition , HNC, saudi.quatar turkey funded then that is final proof of USA inability to separate out “innocent civilians” they keep quoting that belong within al nusrah, and it could actually reveal which terrorists as defined by UN need finally sorting out…………..?

Free Syrian Army accused the government forces of violating the truce in the city of Aleppo, despite the fact that the United States failed to find concrete evidence of this.”

UNITED NATIONS, May 5. / TASS /. Western countries are hampering the passage by the United Nations Security Council of a Russian-Chinese initiative geared to prevent the production and use of chemical weapons in Syria, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said on Wednesday.
He drew attention to the conclusions of specialists from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) that militants in Syria used, most likely, yperite, a highly toxic gas. He said Russia is worried over the fact that terrorists seem to have learned to manufacture poisonous substances.
“It is regrettable that in conditions when it is necessary to immediately employ all available mechanisms to put a roadblock to the activities of chemical terrorists some of the United Nations Security Council’s Western members use trumped-up pretexts to block the Russian-Chinese initiative aimed at checking the threat of production of chemical weapons in Syria and around it by terrorists, “the Russian diplomat said.

In April, Russia and China initiated a draft resolution of the United Nations Security Council that binds the countries to immediately report to the United Nations Security Council and the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) in Syria about any actions of non-government entities aimed at developing, obtaining, possessing, transporting, transferring or using chemical weapons and means of their delivery. Apart from that, the draft resolution tasks the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism with monitoring capacities to reveal persons, groups or governments involved in such activities.
A number of the United Nations Security Council members, including Venezuela and Angola, have supported this initiative whereas others, in particular Great Britain, said the Russian and Chinese initiative needed thorough consideration.
Over 90 inhabited localities in Syria join truce
Over 90 inhabited localities in Syria have joined the regime of ceasefire, and peaceful life in being restored in a number of governorates, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN said at a meeting of the Security Council dedicated to the situation in Aleppo.
“More and more detachments of armed opposition and inhabited localities are joining the [ceasefire] regime, including thanks to the efforts of Russia’s center for reconciliation in Khmeimim. Today, there are more than 90 such localities,” Churkin said.

‘Regime of silence’ comes into force in Aleppo
He lamented that the situation has become tenser in some Syrian regions, including Aleppo.
Earlier Wednesday, the US Department of State announced that Russia and the United States reached an agreement on a repeated imposition of the “silence regime” in Aleppo after similar agreements led to a considerable reduction of the level of violence in Latakia and Damascus. Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that the truce entered into force and will last until 24:00 May 5.
Churkin said the truce in Syria does not cover terrorists and it is inadmissible to take a break in the fight against them.
“It is inadmissible to make a pause in the fight against terrorists, making it possible for them to gather themselves up. No one’s going to have mercy upon terrorists and those who, jointly with them, violate the regime of cessation of hostilities. This is a requirement of the Security Council resolutions, “he said.
The conflict in Syria has lasted since March 2011. In April 2016, the United Nations secretary general’s special envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura said the hostilities in the country have left 400,000 people dead. Later he specified that it was his personal assessment. Up until now, the UN has named the death count of over 250,000 in Syria.
UNITED NATIONS, May 5. / TASS /. The United Nations keeps on insisting Al-Quds hospital in Syria’s Aleppo was a target of an air strike on April 27, despite Russia’s evidence denying the very instance of bombardment.
Apart from that, at the United Nations Security Council meeting on Wednesday, Stephen O’Brien, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, presented updated data on death toll from the air strike and once again put the blame for in on Damascus.

Russian military deny very instance of strike against Al-Quds hospital on April 27
“On April 27, Al-Quds hospital – the most advanced paediatric care center in Aleppo – let me repeat, a hospital dedicated to treating children – was destroyed after being hit by a wave of airstrikes, which by all accounts were launched by the Government of Syria. Fifty people were killed, including several doctors, and eighty more people were injured, “he said.
Earlier, the United States said the alleged air strike claimed 20 lives.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry on Wednesday denied the very instance of an air strike against Al-Quds on April 27, because the building, according to Russian military, had been ruined back last year.
The humanitarian organization Doctors without Borders claims that the hospital was destroyed in a recent air raid.
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Russian planes flew no sorties in the area of Aleppo on that day, while a plane belonging to one of the countries of the so-called “anti-Islamic State coalition” appeared in the sky over the city for the first time after a long interval.
“The pseudo-sensational report of a bombing raid against the Al-Quds hospital has been replicated by many international mass media as an example of breach of the Russian-US agreement on a ceasefire in Syria,” Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.
At a Defense Ministry briefing, Konashenkov presented two photographs. One, made by a Russian drone on April 29, “clearly shows the degree of the hospital’s destruction.”
“This is irrefutable evidence and nobody denies it,” he said.
The other image, taken by space reconnaissance means, indicates the very same damage, Konashenkov said, adding that the latter photo was made on October 15, 2015.
“The presented photographs indicate quite clearly that all ostensible” eyewitness accounts “about an air strike against the hospital are in fact another falsehood.
“More comments would be redundant,” Konashenkov said.

HOMS (Sputnik) – Armed militants have violated the “silent” period in the Syrian city of Aleppo, opening fire in a Christian district, a militia source told RIA Novosti.
“Terrorists fired seven bombs in Midan [neighbourhood] in the first hour after the start of the ‘silence,’ two residential buildings were damaged, there are injuries among civilians,” the source said.
On Wednesday, the governments of the United States and Russia agreed on a deal to extend the cessation of hostilities in Syria to the Aleppo Governorate. The “silent” period in Aleppo started at 00:01 local time on Thursday (21:01 GMT on Wednesday) and will last for 48 hours.
On Wednesday, the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation at the Hmeymim airbase reported that al-Nusra Front militants were carrying out attacks in northwestern parts of Aleppo. According to the reconciliation center, the attacks have led to casualties and injuries among civilians.
Some 7,000 fighters have put down arms and joined the ceasefire agreement in Syria over the last two months, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
LATAKIA (Sputnik) – More than 50 armed opposition groups, numbering approximately 7,000 individuals, in Syria have joined the cessation of hostilities agreement over the last two months, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said on Thursday.
“These are not the final numbers since thanks to the hard and dangerous work by the representatives of the Syrian authorities the process of reconciliation is gaining momentum. Besides its important role in stabilizing the situation in Syria itself, it is a catalyzer in the negotiations in Geneva,” Konashenkov told journalists.
Two explosions rocked the eastern suburb of Homs in Syria on Thursday, local media reported. According to initial reports, two car bombs detonated, one in front of a local recruiting office and another nearby.
