wo rival Libyan factions on Tuesday started new peace talks to deal with the political crisis in Libya by creating a unity government.
The representatives of the Tripoli parliament — General National Congress (GNC) — joined the negotiations with Tobruk-based House of Representatives after boycotting talks last month by not attending two meetings which took place in Morocco.
Anonymous, Re: Libya. I’m sure I remember that when some group of tribal elders were meeting to determine a new leader that the US bombed them. Which– surprise, surprise– wd seem to indicate that the US doesn’t want peace in Libya.
Doesn’t make sense. JN and IS were fighting against each other. The US was supporting Kurds against IS. Turks can’t go against US. In summary every one seems to be fighting IS.
Stephan, I think just the opposite: No one is fighting ISIS. ISIS is the excuse for the presence of Turkey to fight the Kurds, and of the others to destroy Assad’s army.
Thierry Meyssan at Voltairenet says that al Nusra moved because Turkey, who has long supported them, told them to– so that Turkey can occupy Aleppo. Turkey wants to take a chunk of Syria permanently, including Aleppo.
Turkey has been trucking US supplies to all the jihadists from the beginning. Erdogan’s daughter runs the hospital where they are treated; his son takes care of the stolen Syrian oil.
US SAID it was supporting Kurds against ISIS; may even have been true since they want to weaken Syria by partitioning it. They’ve been awful careful not to hurt ISIS too much & have dropped supplies to them on occasion.
As to whether Turkey can go against US orders, it is possible that there are two US factions, giving contradictory orders– just as there’s no agreement regarding the Iranian nuke deal. Supposedly General Allen & the Turks are adherents of the buffer/safe zone, but Obama’s govt wants to attack ISIS & negotiate a compromise govt. I don’t know what to believe.
You dont get it. US only supports IRAQI kurds, i.e. kurdistan. They dont support kurdish groups in Turkey like the PKK, nor do they support the kurdish militant groups in Syria.
Theres more than one group of kurds. Theres bunches of them. The US mostly supports Kurdistan in Iraq as a way to combat Shiite influence in Iraq.
Massinissa, You’re right there are 3 different groups of Kurds, who don’t even speak the same language. But I think the situation may be much more complicated as to what US intentions are. I want to go w the simplified “US wants to destroy Syria, partition it and drive ISIS mostly into the Caucasus.” But Thierry Meyssan at Voltaire.net has been writing highly specific articles claiming the existence of factional infighting in US govt.
I think we better wait a little before making any hard conclusion, especially in light of a Russian press conference wherein Putin sought to commit Syria to joining a coalition of Turkey, Qatar & Saudis in fighting ISIS! This is so wildly counter-intuitive that I think there must be some sort of agreement behind it.
Anyway, to understand all this you need to read the articles on Voltaire.net about Syria. The very last one is http://www.voltairenet.org/article188411.html. Another one describes the press conference, etc.
