Kazan is most important for the birth of hyperbolic or Lobachevskian geometry, in the early 19th century. What this means is that N. I. Lobachevsky has shown, after about 2000 years, that there are consistent geometries not needing 5th Eucledan postulate.
In ordinary life if you violate the law, you go to prison. In geometry, you become well known for opening a new paradigm.
Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky studied in Kazan University, then lectured and died there. For more
