I watched US Secretary of Defense ‘General’ Mattis live on 19 January and I’m reasonably sure a lot of us either watched him or know what he said. Pretty good performance from someone who should know better and I can not determine if the good Tovarich General actually believed what he was saying or not. He was a political general, pure and simple, I don’t care if and where he ‘cut his teeth’ (in my opinion he did not do so) but at his rank he says what he’s told to say. What he looked like to me, with his clear message of ‘obey us or else’, was a low level street thug trying trying to impress the crowd with his strength and prowess. Didn’t work for me and I can only imagine the cringe and face palm factor from those company grade and lower combat soldiers who saw this foolishness.
He pulled out the usual threats to USA. Russia and China’s ‘revisionist regime’ trying to undermine Nato and EU with economic and military ‘threats’ on the very borders of EU, ‘rogue regimes’ of Syria and Iran ‘destabilizing’ Middle East, terrorist organizations of ISIS, Al Qaeda and ‘Lebanon’s Hezbollah’ doing likewise. His threats were very clear to anyone expressing discontent with the dictum emanating from Foggy Bottom and Five Points: “To those who would threaten America’s experiment in democracy: if you challenge us (read don’t obey us), it will be your longest and worst day.” But where is the willingness to negotiate, to speak to others of different cultures and regions who may or may not share the same goals as USA? There is no such willingness, USA has shown a marked tendency to simply ignore any signed or defacto agreement they have made at their will. In other words, The World knows very clearly now that USA is not to be trusted and because of past activities is never to be trusted and will never be trusted.
Bottom line is thus. USA is on this day has arguably the largest and most heavily equipped military force on this rock. It has the ability to project ‘strength’ anywhere in the world on relatively short notice but that strength is not by any stretch of the imagination overwhelming. To project ‘overwhelming’ forces to an area of conflict takes them many months and that projection is based on the supposition that their lines of transport and supply are free of any threats whatsoever. All well and fine when you are dealing with a country or region who has few if any strategic assets but on the other hand, this world is changing, witness the Yemen mess and more than one vessel ‘under US contract’ and units of the Saudi ‘navy’ getting a missile up their noses. Anyone who thinks that can not happen to US assets and/or transportation contractors is living in a different world.
Since the beginning of somewhat organized warfare over 5000 years ago, supply and transport interdiction has been practiced alongside of organized armies. For eons this interdiction involved foot based attempts at individual convoys of materials and food. With the advent of somewhat accurate artillery some centuries ago along with controlled explosives a little over a century ago, interdiction of supply units was more serious and led to ever growing counter measures. With the advent of air assets interdiction attempts became even more widespread and with the availability of both submerged and missile assets this interdiction could, and in many instances did, become a far more serious and effective effort. Today, with the readily available shoulder fired missiles interdiction can be a very serious problem. Who is to say that the innocent little fishing boat does not have a dual charge thermobaric antitank missile sitting on the hull floor, said missile having a range for some in excess of 500 meters. What are you going to do, machine gun every little boat within a klick of your ship or convoy?
Air transport assets are likewise becoming increasingly vulnerable. So far USA has been amazingly lucky in that respect. I remember the laughter when CIA armed Taliban in Afghan with Stinger missiles, sat back and laughed at the resultant disruption off Soviet air assets. Perhaps they don’t think the same can happen to them? With today’s readily available shoulder fired anti air missiles, all it will take is one lad on a high hilltop to do significant physical and psychological damage to any effort to deliver or supply the ‘overwhelming force’ being transported to the next hot spot of USA choosing.
Additionally, the day will come when one of those floating aerodromes will not be as safe and secure as it was a scant few years ago. The winds of fortune are beginning to be adverse, witness an incident a couple years ago in the Black Sea following which virtually the entire US fleet of carriers was pulled out of service for an emergency modification. Something scared the pants off of them. Do you think the Yemen Houthi units do not have missile assets? They’ve already shown they do and know how to use them. Of course the missiles were all ‘provided by Iran’ but that’s a different topic. For a floating aerodrome, you do not have to come anywhere near sinking it or damaging it’s motive system, damage to the superstructure of landing deck will suffice to put it out of action for a very long time, let alone the possibility of subsequent fires and destruction of aircraft and ordinance as secondary damage. If you think not, just look at what J. McCain did to USS Forrestal with one errant missile launch on the flight deck.
Economically, USA can not void it’s bladder in the Chinese bowl of Cheerios, to do so will destroy the current bedrock of the US economy, this bedrock being China and to a slightly lesser extent South Korea. Likewise, USA will not attack DPRK for the same reason in that the capitol and financial hub of South Korea is within easy arty and missile range of DPRK. USA will continue to ratchet up the sanctions on Russia and China for ‘breaking’ the total trade embargo on DPRK, these sanctions being, each and every one of them, an Act of War.
On 17 January 2018, R. Tillerson, the US Secretary of State, said the following, courtesy of Russia Today on 19 January and the interview was posted on Youtube but the US Department of State:
https://www.rt.com/usa/416354-tillerson-un-sanctions-north-korea/
“Signs of starvation and death in North Korea indicate that US diplomatic strategy works fine, says the secretary of state. The objective now is not to let Pyongyang evoke sympathy around the world for it’s sanctions-induced woes.”
“This unexpectedly revealing description of what R. Tillerson apparently considers successful diplomacy came from his own mouth on Wednesday as he was speaking at Stanford University with former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice.”
If either or both of these clowns think the entire world does not know of what they are saying and doing, they are so far out of touch as to be ludicrous. Such a callous statement from a current and a former US Secretary of State shows the entire world exactly what they think of us, but then we already knew that. What would this coddled and insulated worthies think if it was their citizens, their families, wives, husbands, children, starving to death to make a ‘diplomatic’ point?
And then we have that lovely term, “Collateral damage”, as in maimed and dead civilians who ‘got in the way’ simply because they happened to live or be in an area that was being bombed by the air forces of USA/NATO? Look what you have done in the last not quite 3 decades:
1999. Yugoslavia. No UN Mandate so you called it a ‘NATO Humanitarian Mission’, American General Wesley Clark, CO.
In excess of 2,000 civilians killed and wounded by deliberately attacking ‘dual use’ facilities, factories, power plants, TV stations, roads, bridges railways. 6,000 Yugoslav troops and police killed and wounded. Massive damage to civilian infrastructure, homes, flats, roads and railways.
NATO aircraft involved from US, Canada, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, UK, Denmark, Belgium, Norway, Holland, Turkey. Over 1,000 aircraft produced 38,000 admitted sorties. Ordinance dropped included, in addition to TP weapons, 152 cluster bombs containing 35,450 cluster bombs, thermo-visual bombs and graphite bombs (ALL cluster bombs are prohibited under international conventions).
Each and every one of these actions against Yugoslavia is a war crime and the war criminals include US General Wesley Clark as CO and included every single politician and government functionary, soldier, sailor, Marine and airman who in any way contributed to this war crime, be they active participants in actual combat or involved in any support of this war crime right down to and including the ordinance handlers, refuel personnel, repair personnel and everyone in between the lowest ranks to the highest ranks.
2003. Iraq. USA invaded Iraq on 20 March 2003. No UN Security Council Mandate or declaration of war was given beforehand.
Countries allied to USA were United Kingdom, Australia, and Poland contributing troops. All NATO countries contributed support and logistics to this illegal war.
US and allied air assets participated in extensive bombings of Iraq Armed Forces and civilian assets of ‘dual use possibility’. Air assets used in direct action against Iraq were USA, UK, Canada, France, Italy and Saudi Arabia.
Casualties for Iraq from the invasion and following 14 years of combat and armed conflict are estimated to be in excess of 35,000 military and police plus in excess of 120,000 civilian plus over 2 millions of civilians have left the country.
Commanders of the operation were President George W. Bush, PM Tony Blair of UK and General T. Franks, US Army. Each and every participant in this war are guilty of war crimes under international and domestic laws including every government functionary and every single soldier, sailor, Marine and airman who in any way contributed to this war crime, be they active participants in actual combat or involved in any support of this war crime.
2011. Libya. 17 March 2011, UNSC passed a resolution imposing a ‘now fly’ zone over the Sovereign State of Libya, a member of UN.
On 19 March of that year the first NATO recon flights began over Libya and on the same day massive air and missile attacks were launched from US and NATO aircraft and ships. In excess of 26,000 sorties were flown between 19 March and early October.
The participants in this unauthorized attack on Libya were: USA/NATO, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Jordan, Holland, Norway, Romania, Sweden, Turkey, and others.
Organized US troops were also located on the ground and participating in operations against the Libyan Government from late March until late October, denied by the US Government who stated the troops on the ground in Libya were Americans but not American military.
Estimates of casualties from the bombings alone are in excess of 15,000 civilians dead and injured.
Commanders of the operation were President B. Obama, SecState H. Clinton, SecDef Robert Gates, US General Carter Ham, US Admiral James Stavridis. Each and every one of these operations was a war crime and each and every participant in these illegal actions is a war criminal, from the lowliest aircraft tire pressure checker to the most senior in command.
2011. Syria. An anti government operation began in 2011 against the government of Bashar al-Assad, the elected president of Syria. The following politicians from Europe, US, Australia, USA and Canada were involved in this ongoing war crime: President Donald Trump, President Barack Obama, Charles Hagel, Ashton Carter, James Mattis, Lloyd Austin, James L. Terry, Joseph Votel, Stephen J. Townsend, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Theresa May, David Cameron, Stephen Hiller, Tony Abbott, Malcolm Turnbull, Trevor Jones, David Johnston, Francois Hollande, Jean-Yves Le Drian, Pierre de Villers, Angela Merkel, Ursula von der Leyen and Volker Wieker, Stephen Harper, Justin Trudeau, Thomas J. Lawson, Yvan Blondin, King Abdullah II, Abdullah Ensour, Benjamin Netanyahu, Avigdor Lieberman, Rav Aluf Gadi Eizenkot, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Nurettin Canikli and Hulusi Akar.
The entire command, control and servicemen of following military organizations were involved in this illegal aggression and attack on the Sovereign State of Syria. United States of America, Canada, Israel, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, Turkey, Jordan, Italy, Holland, Denmark, Belgium and Norway. Each and every politician, officer and serviceman of the mentioned countries is guilty of war crimes of dreadful seriousness, all of them from president down to the cooks feeding the troops. No one who was involved in any way in this undeclared war is clear of guilt.
It is estimated that in excess of 100,000 Syrian civilians have been killed and wounded in the fighting since 2011. It is estimated that 100,000 members of Syrian armed forces have been killed, wounded and executed in the fighting. In excess of 2 millions Syrian citizens have fled the fighting one way or another. Vast areas of Syria including cities, towns, infrastructure and industry are totally destroyed. These loses are catastrophic for a country with a population of some 17 millions before US attacked.
None of the aforementioned countries, politicians and military commanders had the least thought of fighting what have been proven to be the US and EU bought and paid for terrorist organizations of ISIL, IGIL, Daesh, and dozen of other names, they have done their damnedest to destroy President Bashar al-Assad and his government. In 4 years, the terrorist organizations grew in numbers and equipment exponentially as almost the entire country was occupied by terrorist organizations with the direct, on sight, hands on assistance of operatives and serving military of USA, Germany, UK, Canada, Jordan, Turkey and France and vast infusions of money and equipment from NATO, USA, Canada, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Czech Republic, Germany, Holland, France and UK.
In late summer of 2015, President al-Assad was calculated to be less than two weeks from total defeat. He appealed to President V. V. Putin of Russia for help. President Putin agreed to assist Syria and as such is the only LEGAL foreign entity in the entire country. Every other foreign military and serviceman is an illegal fighter against the Government of Syria. In 6 months with an air unit that never numbered more than 50 airframes at any given time, Russia stopped the advance of the terrorists, brought entire units of Syrian Army to Russia for intense training and equipage and assisted the Syrian Army in their fight against the NATO/US coalition. In a year and a half, the coalition was to all intents defeated. The hegemon is not amused and the fighting is ongoing but Syria will not fall. With time President al-Assad will again rule over a hopefully peaceful country again. He will also spend the next 20 years rebuilding what the coalition destroyed.
This entire war in Syria was towards one simple goal: Run the oil and gas pipelines to the Syrian coast from the oil rich countries of the Middle East and destroy Russia’s profitable supply business with Europe. No other reason. They failed.
There is no need to detail the other crimes of USA in Ukraine, central Africa, Afghanistan, Panama, Nicaragua, Brazil, Venezuela and Korea. The shining light of freedom, democracy and prosperity has done nothing but foment death, fire and destruction for 65 years and now the Secretary of Defense has told The World to either obey Washington or suffer the consequences. However, he did not say who would suffer the consequences. Perhaps he should look in a mirror.
As for President Trump, I don’t recognize him today. I’ve been on this rock a long time and I’ve never seen the vitriol poured on any sitting or past president of the likes thrown at him every day and all day. We’ll see how this all pans out, I have not a clue, but I do know that, while his bedrock of support is still solid, if he gets US in a war with Iran and/or DPRK, that support will evaporate like the sound of the gossamer wings of a spring butterfly when the body bags start coming back in Lord forbid their hundreds or their thousands. Neither country is a pushover, if they were they would have already been invaded and the US PTB knows this fact very well. All whoever are actually running США can do is shout, bluster, snarl and toss ever more sanctions on those who ‘do not obey’. This is a fool’s errand that will eventually return in spades. Just think of the numbers of countries and populace out there who are longing for the chance to return some of that ‘collateral damage’…..in like kind and with glee. What you sow, so shall you reap, a saying that apparently the USA PTB never learned. But they might.

“Signs of starvation and death in North Korea indicate that US diplomatic strategy works fine, says the secretary of state. The objective now is not to let Pyongyang evoke sympathy around the world for it’s sanctions-induced woes.”
What’s quite ‘amusing’ here is that James Mattis assumes what should be proved: People are facing starvation in the DPRK. On this basis, his conclusion thus becomes: “The objective now is not to let Pyongyang evoke sympathy around the world for getting on fine”.
Being the typical anti-life Pindo offal that he is, I think it’s very good Mattis shows the Exceptionals’ and Indispensables’ moral and intellectual stature with such gusto.
Correction: Rex Tillerson; not James Mattis was being quoted above.
It is not original sentiment. Many south korean old guards are mad at China for supporting North Korea so NKrean would not fall on their knees begging.
Thank-you for writing this down so quickly Auslander with the historical outline well presented.
You’re right, if those men think that we do not understand what they are saying, they would be very wrong. With the 2 ‘gentlemen’ that you mention, Tillerson and some MadDog, I treated myself to taking some work hours to watch the Trump/Netanyahu discussion at Davos earlier today. So, I can say that you have failed and and I am still failing to find sufficient words of sufficient import and sheer explosive strength to simply start expressing the internal outrage. But our joint failure is only because one needs to eventually resort to words that one cannot use in good company. These are not men, they are thugs. Let us not forget: “Signs of starvation and death in North Korea indicate that US diplomatic strategy works fine,” Does that one sentence not say it all?
I can assure you, my dear lady, that the urge to use language that those two gentlemen would understand clearly was difficult to suppress, but as you stated, on this forum such language would be not quite acceptable. Perhaps the day will come when I have the opportunity to express my thoughts to them in person but there is not much chance of that. That lack of chance might actually be a good thing….for them.
And yes, that one sentence does say it all, crystal clear and shouted to the mountain tops.

Thanks for your insights. The Rex Tillerson comments were bizarre–he talked about the “ghost” fishing boats (apparently from North Korea) that periodically are found in Japanese waters with the crews, regrettably, dead. This, according to Tillerson, is due to the fishermen being forced to fish in winter and not having enough fuel to make it back to home port. I do not have any way to verify any of this. Unfortunately, many years ago, I knew three people from the North Coast of Oregon who went missing in their fishing boat, no trace of them or their boat was ever found, and their deaths were officially listed as “lost at sea”. Note to Mr. Tillerson: you poor wretch, this is not a tragedy limited to North Koreans. Other facts that may have escaped Tillerson’s beady eyes: One out of ten college students in the USA are homeless. Last year, over forty-five million people in the US went hungry (that is what food insecurity means, Mr. Tillerson–is this official policy?). Last year, over 250,000 people in the US died because of adverse reactions to vaccines and mistakes in their prescribed medications. Suicide rates in the US are up, the admitted number for last year was over 41 000. Deaths from automobile accidents are also up, the admitted number also around 41 000. Maiming’s and injuries and “delayed deaths” from car wrecks are in the hundreds of thousands. Deaths from cancer and debilitating lung diseases exceeded 300 000. Deaths tolls from floods and fires and mud avalanches and extreme weather events are being grossly under-reported. Perhaps in Tillerson’s way of thinking these are “affordable” losses, just another day in the good old USA, boast worthy evidence that the “they Really do hate all of us and they Really do want all of us dead”– strategy is working just fine. My, what a Fine start this year is off to.
The generally expressed desire of “America first” can not be criticized. It is a perfectly correct aspiration for our people to cherish. But the problem which we have to solve is how to make America first. It can not be done by the cultivation of national bigotry, arrogance, or selfishness. Hatreds, jealousies, and suspicions will not be productive of any benefits in this direction. Here again we must apply the rule of toleration. Because there are other peoples whose ways are not our ways, and whose thoughts are not our thoughts, we are not warranted in drawing the conclusion that they are adding nothing to the sum of civilization.
We can make little contribution to the welfare of humanity on the theory that we are a superior people and all others are an inferior people. We do not need to be too loud in the assertion of our own righteousness. It is true that we live under most favorable circumstances.
But before we come to the final and irrevocable decision that we are better than everybody else we need to consider what we might do if we had their provocations and their difficulties. We are not likely to improve our own condition or help humanity very much until we come to the sympathetic understanding that human nature is about the same everywhere, that it is rather evenly distributed over the surface of the earth, and that we are all united in a common brotherhood.
We can only make America first in the true sense which that means by cultivating a spirit of friendship and good will, by the exercise of the virtues of patience and forbearance, by being “plenteous in mercy,” and through progress at home and helpfulness abroad standing as an example of real service to humanity.
– Calvin Coolidge, speech to an American Legion convention in 1925
pathetic, narcissistic blathering of fools about to get what they deserve… collapse of the USA.
We can only make America first in the true sense which that means by cultivating a spirit of friendship and good will,…
Your problem is (and ours as a cosequence) that you try to make America first
Try to make it equal or not worse than others and you’ll get positive feedback. But you still think that you are indispensable. It’s your main mistake. You can be dispenced or defeated or destroyed.
Not much sense to try to check it.
It makes even more sense now than almost 100 years ago! And its so obvious to an external observer!
President Trump like most Americans, suffers from “military worship syndrome”, a mental disorder that psychologically elevates citizens who wear the uniform of the armed forces of the United States to that of demigods, to be fawned over and given the highest respect with little consideration for their role in defending America from attacks by the latest Pentagon pseudo-antagonist.
The clever manipulation by the marketing division of the U.S. Military has created an unbridled junta that operates inside Washington, DC and thanks to Trump, is now the de facto arbiter of American foreign policy. This disastrous executive cabinet appointment of another military advisor, follows a historical parallel to Japan in the 1930’s, where President Trump plays Emperor Hirohito and Secretary of War James Mattis plays the part of uber-nationalist, General Hideki Tojo.
Mattis was a 40 year career military officer who is revered with glowing praise for his leadership and blunt speech concerning matters of war. Some infamous quotes from a professional soldier who attained the rank of general and wore the uniform of the United States Marine Corps.
1. “Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.”
2. “There are some people who think you have to hate them in order to shoot them. I don’t think you do. It’s just business.”
3. “There is nothing better than getting shot at and missed. It’s really great.”
4. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people.”
5. “The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some a**holes in the world that just need to be shot.”
6. “I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f*** with me, I’ll kill you all.”
This was a former American commissioned officer, a leader who displayed unabashed lust for killing as he encouraged the same bravado in his Marine grunts. Notice the attempt to temper his words in the first quote by using the phrase, “Be polite, be professional” as if trading in death is commensurate with the work of a doctor in medicine, an attorney in the practice of law, an engineer in science or a teacher of education. He clearly declares himself to be a professional killer and proud of it.
Mattis again, offers his personal thoughts when interviewed by the CBS television show, “Face the Nation” (see: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/transcript-defense-secretary-james-mattis-on-face-the-nation-may-28-2017/ ).
In particular he says very cleverly, “There is no relaxation of our attention to protect the innocent. We do everything we can to protect the civilians, and actually lowering– delegating the authority to the lower level allows us to do this better.”
That’s called plausible deniability or in other words, CYA when NCO’s under his command spray bullets everywhere and kill women and children who are marked as the “walking dead”.
Mattis continues with his deceptive comments such as, “The American people and the American military will never get used to civilian casualties.”
The truth is the American people or its military could care less about the foreign civilian fatalities as long as it’s not them lying on the ground.
When asked about Russia, Mattis said, “But right now, Russia is choosing to be a strategic competitor for any number of reasons. But the bottom line is NATO is not a threat and they know it.”
Yes it must be true that U.S.-NATO is not a threat to the Russian Federation because he affirms it. So what are U.S. ground troops doing on Russia’s western border in Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, huh? Why is the U.S. doing air reconnaissance and combat sea and land drills on a regular basis in the Baltic sea? His lies are so blatant it oozes from his face like poison.
All this from a U.S. Marine who even has a Polish Army medal proudly displayed on his retired uniform, ribbon rack. But no purple heart; how could that be, I wonder? Perhaps leading from the “rear with the gear” is safer than risking his life like the grunts under his command are asked to do for MRE’s, glory and guts.
It is this ethos of the adopted military prowess of ancient Sparta brought forward into the 21st century where the primary order is see the enemy everywhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if Secretary Mattis referred to the works of the Spartan poet, Tyrtaeus, to further inspire his men, “You should reach the limits of virtue, before you cross the border of death.” or this line, “For no man ever proves himself a good man in war unless he can endure to face the blood and the slaughter, …”.
The psychosis of this mental attitude is that it leads young, inexperienced junior officers and their subordinates to believe there are no rules concerning modern warfare, only to kill when the opportunity presents itself. “Shoot first, sort it out later” becomes the normal thinking process. Unarmed civilians caught in a combat area could be wearing an IED, better shoot them and say you’re sorry afterwards. A wedding party might be cover for terrorists disguised as guests, better bomb them from above, after all, “collateral damage” is military-speak for the non-combatants who are now targets of opportunity.
This warrior culture breaches criminal behavior when it ignores the UCMJ (Uniformed Code of Military Justice), Laws of Warfare or Jus in bello. Years ago, the U.S. Military would have brought charges against wanton killing of innocents but not any more. The United Nations turns a deaf ear and a blind eye as well, serving as the political footstool of American hegemony anywhere in the world.
King Agesilaus II of Sparta, when asked about his nation’s boundaries looked at his spear and said, “As far as this can reach.” The same hubris is claimed by the United States government and will ultimately be their downfall, one day.
Years ago, the U.S. Military would have brought charges against wanton killing of innocents but not any more.
Sure, like they did in Vietnam and Korea, right?

“President Trump like most Americans, suffers from “military worship syndrome.”” I don’t think that is quite the problem, I sincerely doubt that Trump worships anything, he is a narcissist after all, not that that is a bad thing necessarily, my cat is a narcissist and gets along just fine. I think that Trump is also a hard-nosed realist and made a deal with the military to give them whatever they want if they will keep him and his family alive. We are in the US version of the last days of Rome and he needs the military to survive.
“What are you going to do, machine gun every little boat within a klick of your ship or convoy?”
Of course. They already do the equivalent on land and in the air.

Over 120,000 civilians, damn straight. Try 1.5 million (plus an equal number from the First Gulf War and the sanctions – remember Madeleine Albright’s 250,000 dead children and how she thought that was a price worth paying?) At least 3 million dead Iraqis, plus hundreds of thousands of maimed and wounded, plus perhaps 10 million bereaved and a similar number displaced and homeless. A marvellous achievement.

Not quite. Iranians, Hezbollah, and quite possibly some Iraqis and others.

I had the privilege of previewing this article.
This was my comment back to Auslander.
Very thorough exposition of the bloody facts. Well done, my friend.
Dispatches Mattis perfectly.
You drove through the breech like the counter-attack of Russian armor!
Street thug to logistics to war crimes.
Excellent.
Not much more to add, other than Auslander has the street cred background for this article.
He also has a wonderful literary output.

We can see the new US administration / regime now congealing into something coherent. I cannot say it is a pleasant picture.
General Mattis is applying Bismarckian tactics, where innocents are pronounced aggressors and aggressors are pronounced innocents. This old tactic is falling on deaf ears, and nobody is taking Mattis seriously.
When it comes to the US military, it might still be the largest military in the world, but it’s fighting efficiency is questionable. During the 1999 aggression against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro), NATO lost 137 combat aircraft and 25 helicopters, including one F-117 (seen on TV) and one B-2 (not seen on TV). The US Air Force is still short of one B-2, (“Spirit of Missouri”) which it claims crashed in the US due to “technical” difficulties. It did not. It was shot down by the Serbs. Hospitals in Albania were full of Albanian and NATO wounded. The Serbs achieved all that with basically old Russian equipment.
The invasion of Iraq in 2003 did not go as smoothly as presented by CNN. Yes, the US took Baghdad, losing about 600 killed just taking the Baghdad Airport. According to one analyst, the US never conquered more than 1/3 of Iraq. What happened to the Iraqi National Guard, the elite ? Anybody see it surrender ? The Iraqi military put up a pretty good fight, even though much of it’s equipment was old.
In 2014 the US Navy sent the USS Donald Cook to the Black Sea. Russia responded by sending one SU-24 light bomber against the destroyer. The Russian pilot permitted the destroyer to locate him on it’s radar, after which the pilot activated the Khirbiny jamming system, which paralyzed all the electronics on the destroyer, including radar and missile systems. After that the pilot flew 12 times over the destroyer, which turned around and fled back to Romania.
In 2017 Trump attacked Syria with Towahawk cruise missiles. US destroyers fired two volleys of missiles. The first volley of 30 missiles saw one cruise missile misfire, while the remaining 29 missiles were intercepted by the Russian Khirbiny jamming system, which turned the missiles in another direction. The destroyers fired a second volley of 30 missiles. This time the Russians did not interfere, wanting to see the efficiency of the Tomahawks. Not one struck the runways of that Syrian airfield. Some hangers were hit, and five old Syrian planes, which were being serviced, were destroyed. Some missiles even struck villages, killing civilians. The Syrians started using the airfield a mere 24 hours after the attack.
In January of this year US proxies sent those mini drones against the Russian airfield in Syria. The US wanted to see the efficiency of Russian AA missiles and electronics. It got it’s answer. All the drones were either destroyed or captured.
As one analyst has stated, the US does not have the manpower and manufacturing base for a war against Russia and Syria. Yes, it can attack smaller countries, but at what price and with what end result ? A successful war against Iran ? Doubtful. A successful war against North Korea ? Doubtful.
The US military is spread across the world, and the question is can it be concentrated for a new regional war and at what time frame. What is the condition of US military equipment ? How much of it has been worn out during previous military interventions ?
While the US was fighting regional wars, Russia was quietly developing it’s high tech. It now has some of the best missiles systems, like the S-300, S-350, S-400, S-500, the Sunburn, the Mosqit, the Kornet, the Kalibr and others, as well as some of the best combat aircraft in the world, like the SU-34, SU-35, SU-37, SU-57, MIG-35, MIG-41. Russian electronics has proven it’s worth in the Black Sea and in Syria, together with Russian missile systems and combat aircraft.
The US better think twice about starting a new regional war, and it better forget about fighting Russia and China.
The US better think twice about starting a new regional war, and it better forget about fighting Russia and China.
The problem is – they are stupid. It’s hard to Trump, Mattis, Haley … to think even once and you asking for twice.
It’s not possible, I’ afraid.
They are shrewd and cunning to a high degree, and thus “smart”. This quality is the dominant feature of their character…and this is to say that there is little else…no sense of history, no humanity, no understanding of classical knowledge…how many read anything in other languages..let alone the Greek, or Russian, or whatever…and how many have ever done a days work for wages? They are nuts, and not very nice. And they have the misfortune to have grasped power in the Realm only to find, as MacBeth did…ruin and defeat.
As did old Mac, they shall have their da’n war. It’s inescapable, there must be the Götterdämmerung or – well you know…but here’s the wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragnar%C3%B6k
I do not care to say what the theory of conflict says about this sort of matter. Understand? It pretty obvious though, and what happens if the matter goes on forever, isn’t it? Would that situation be permitted?
QED
They are stupid and they do need a war, any war will do. My bet is on Ukraine, not a real war, a proxy war but a bloody, messy, nasty two to three year war is my guess. As for winning, well they are in it for the money not the medals, so I doubt they really care.
@B.F.: Can you provide sources regarding NATO’s losses in 1999? I believe you, but more information would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
The Powers That Be in the USA need to lose and until they lose they will not “get” it. Looks as if this is where it will take place since they managed to pull a psuedo “win” out of Syria with their vile use of the unprincipled Kurds and unfounded claims of victory after bombing Raqqa ( and Mosul) into rubble.
Just in time for the Russian elections.

Hopefully their military plans will go exactly like the new Zumwalt….too few too expensive cannot afford shells rail gun not work keeps breaking down etc etc….total failure…versus new amazing russian made sniper rifle and the incredible Sukhoi’s.

China and Russia must stand together to face the usa…..
Not only that two. All sane peoples and countries must. But they are too busy imposing sanctions to Russia.
Must disagree regards Syria being about oil pipelines.
Syria was about the destruction of Syria as an independent sovereign state, the expansion of Israel into a destroyed, and defenceless, Syria and the attempted creation of a new Zionist controlled Kurdistan state wedged between Iran and Turkey.
In Israel this new Kurdistan is known as Israel 2.0.
What was left of Syria would have become a new Gaza.
I agree.
Syria was never just about getting the oil through. It’s multi-facetted, but basically correct about destroying an enemy of Israel, a friend of Iran and Hezbollah, and of course the destruction of a country with no religious divisions or conflicts.
Someone said somewhere that US wins by simply creating chaos, and it is sadly correct. For them to win, destruction (of which they are eminently capable) is enough, and it happens in a very short time. For their victim to win, they must unite and build, and that takes much much longer.
Iraq was a war for Israel, Libya was a war for Israel, Syria is a war for Israel. If they are ever stupid enough to start a war with Iran, that will be another war for Israel.
@Must disagree regards Syria being about oil pipelines.
It was about pipelines in the benefit of Israel, meant to became the hub for the distribution of oil and gas (from Kurdistan, the ‘second Israel) to Europe.
NT
That is another point I was going to raise. The terror war on Syria is israel’s baby all the way. The americans, nato/eu, the saudis and their tagalongs, daesh, these are all Israeli tools.
Well said. This was another war for Israel. The oil pipeline was just killing two birds with one stone.
In 2011 president of France was Nicolas Sarkozy, not François Hollande.
It’s him who formented the war against Libya and dragged all others behind. Obama was rather unconvinced in the beginning.
Hollande followed the trend, and gave momentum to the general failure of France.
Same thing with Trudeau. He didn’t actually become Leader of the Liberal Party until 2013 and PM, 2015. He pulled Canadian Fighter jets out of Syria as promised. This is not to say though, that Auslander is not correct in his assertions of Canada’s complicity in war crimes. Canada works very hard at brand identification as a fair and honest soft power peace keeper. Behind the scenes though, Canada is secretly deploying its very capable spec ops, selling weapons to Saudi Arabia and Ukraine, providing logistics, materiel and personnel to US, Israeli and NATO endeavours and generally participating in much more than they let on.
Auslander
Fine article:
Might add the Zionist Crime against Palestine (key to all the other crimes in the Mid East).
1. Indonesia 1965 – 1 million slaughtered by Indonesian Armed Forces supplied and backed by the American Navy, planned as part of the Phoenix Plan (to be used in Vietnam), and orchestrated by the murderers of John F. Kennedy, MOSSAD and the CIA.
2. 1962-1975 – Phoenix Plan continued in Vietnam resulting in 2 million – mostly civilians, dead – mostly from American bombing, (US Senate figures). Zionist General (one-eyed) Mosh Dayan – urged the American Military to use Nuclear weapons against the Vietnamese. So much for Jewish humanism.
3. Palestine from 1936, (the British suppression of their General Strike for Independence), to the present. Trump’s replacement, VP Penn, is currently visiting Occupied Palestine and promising everything to the Zionist Land Thieving Oligarchs.
[The solution is obvious.] Our Democratic Republic, (that was destroyed in a hail of gunfire on November 22, 1963), must be Restored. This our patriotic and human duty as American citizens. The restoration of our Republic will cure all our (and the world’s) major ills.
Our America will be Sovereign; Russia will be united; Palestine, and the other Arab nations will be restored.
Europeans won’t know what to do with themselves when they no longer are slaves.
The Decembrists will break bread with the Sons and Daughters of Liberty.
And how’s the Information War going for the Hegemonic Bully??
You wonder if everyone over here in the states is stupid, or just asleep. And you dig in for the Long Haul and hope that stupidity and sleep don’t kill us all.
Then you take a different sort of reading, “out there” in enemy territory away from the Vineyard and allied sites and you might even get encouraged by what you see and hear.
The Hated Hegemon’s pundits ain’t exactly preachin’ to the choir any more, it seems.
Everybody hates a bully and the bully’s tax payers are finally waking up a little bit and caring a little bit more about why their country is hated. A few don’t mind being hated, but most, when they finally become aware of the fact, are not comfortable about it. Trouble is, a majority, for a long, long time, haven’t had a clue.
Once in a while I try something totally new. The title of the video presentation I clicked on today was “Crisis and Chaos Are We Heading to World War III??”
https://youtu.be/JDNr8rIQXAo
I never heard of George Friedman, but after a few minutes I was almost laughing. Then I realized that there are scores of thousands of unemployed comedians and this clown is depriving them of their livellihood!!
I then got seriously pissed off at his pompous, smug pronouncements about “everyone else”. Beware the flatterers, because Ego Is THE Enemy!!! And THIS comedic routine by Friedman is what will LEAD the ignorant, idiot Ego into WW III.
Unless your instinct (the rest of the world AND America) is to throw rotten fruit in his face for his bald-faced attempt to mind-control you with flattery and lies..
And, reading from the comments section, that’s what the clear majority, including a majority of American commenters were doing, with the “ones and zeros” of the Internet of Ideas. Disrespecting him and his message, en masse.
I liked this one the most, probably:
From an American:
“Russiaphobic nonsense .The U.S. is the true threat. We helped orchestrate a coup and are actually supporting Nazis . They’ve turned s blind eye to the extremist position and turned a blind eye to the attacks on Jews and Russian speaking people in Ukraine . Furthermore the U.S. sponsors terrorists ,ISL etc. When Trump ran for president he applauded efforts to get those 28 pages released about Saudi Arabia involvement in 911 which would allow families of 911 victims to sue the Saudis .Of course once Trump got elected he did a total reversal , visited Saudi Arabia first on his trip and has been busy making multibillion dollar deals to sell them more weapons which has resulted in more death, more opression and on it goes .Oh but hey it creates jobs in America right ? How is this going to make America great again ? We’ve been sowing the seeds of our own destruction for far too long and it’s time it stops .His analysis of the broken borders of Iraq etc is a joke.America and Brittain helped create this disaster to begin with and helped fracture those borders to begin with going way back long before the recent invasion of Iraq .The U.S. aren’t first responders as he puts it ,we are first instigators and agitators .All one needs to do is go back to what was called Project for a new American Century written in the 90s to understand the situation and the truth .This so called think tank outlined the agenda which has been revealed and talked about at length .Their plan was to uproot the entire Middle East and to fracture the people and cause dissent , division and total instability so we can easily come in and suck up their natural resources .None of these wars have anything to do with humanitarian causes or democracy .If democracy was the case we would have sided with Russia in stablizing Ukraine and would have sought wide support in Syria and worked with Russia to remove ISL .Instead I’ve read reports of mysterious unmarked American planes dropping off supplies to ISL and have seen videos made by so called moderate rebels shelling Syrian people with chemical weapons .So please spare me the propaganda and start telling us the real reasons and the truth.”
But the majority of comments were of that tenor.
And anti-zionists in the comments TEN or TWENTY to One, over zionists.
Trouble is, they are running so scared, they NEED WW III to upset the apple cart of the way this Information War is going.
I don’t know what else could stop the Whole Truth from coming out, at this point. That’s the way this thing is going, IMHO. Which may be very, very dangerous, but it is also very, very good …..as long as their need for Chaos Escalation is denied by sufficient persons recognizing ……..The Friedman’s of the world and their swindle………is THE primary cause of the chaos they pretend to offer protection against.
Mattis is just one of their junkyard dogs, barking.
I doubt if he even knows that his owners call military men and police “our dogs”….BTW.
Hopefully Trump is just letting the mutts bark themselves out and fail so bad that they get choke collars around their necks as soon as he can get Mueller sent to jail, instead of himself.
That might be the REAL war going on right now. But it IS quite hard to tell, sometimes.

Just as Hitler and his inner circle were Jewish and totally betrayed the German people, so is Donald Trump and his inner circle Jewish, and perfectly positioned to trick the American people in to supporting the Globalist NWO.
Just today, former SOS Henry Kissinger, former SOS George Schultz, and former deputy SOS Richard Armitage testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee as follows:
“The threatening collapse of the world order has been gaining momentum for two decades, Kissinger warned. This, a result of a drive towards sovereignty, rejection of territorial acquisition by force, the expansion of trade and push for human rights, he said.”
Imagine that, his precious NWO is threatened by “drive for sovereignty” and “push for human rights.” Crazy ingrates.
This from a guy who turned Soviet Agent while serving in American forces occupying German after WWII.
“Kissinger warned the United States is facing an urgent concern with North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, a more intermediate threat through entrenched and expanding conflicts in the Middle East and a rising challenge to the current state of world powers.”
But, what’s Kissinger really afraid of? People, that’s what! Too many people on a planet with shrinking resources. Global warming and radiation have already cut fish catch by 50% and grain production near 25%.
Time for the nuclear option?
Well done, Auslander, for reminding me of the PASOK government of Greece.
They not only attacked an Old ally in the face of Libya but also were the first party in Government that called for attack against Syria, also an Old ally.
They were the first government that withdrew our ambassador from Damascus and closed down the Embassy of Syria in Athens. That prevented Syrians from going on to other countries and got stuck in no mans land with no way of leaving Greece or even sorting out the pseudo-refugees from the real ones, in an orderly fashion
This despicable pack of hyenas, also attacked the Greek People by inviting the IMF and we have today’s disaster in our hands.
Make no mistake that these criminals will pay, eventually
Having said the above, All Greek Political parties are guilty for tacitly supporting all these crimes.
I fully agree with Auslander.
Add to it U.S psycho-politics, another criminal attempt to change the world in their favour, relentlessly imposed on countries which tried to find their own future.
The Diktat is Neoliberalism and is imposed by media brain-washing and local oligarchies controlling the justice system or government. (See Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, etc).
Neoliberalism is as criminal , as all the U.S induced wars and are equal in its disastrous consequences.
Anybody, with average intelligence, can dismantle the premises of neoliberalism, solely implemented to advance corporatism and destroy humanity.
Look at some of the idiotic premises:
“The cost of labour is too high”
“Austerity induces economic growth”
“Privatization improves services”
“Deregulation improves competition”
None of this works and brings nations to more debt, poverty, unemployment and the destruction of social cohesion.
All of this causes chaos and chaos is the only thing the U.S needs to justify its alleged role as a ‘protector’, while all the world’s money is laundered through Wall Street.
Cheers

Although they may or may not deserve it, the great calamity coming its way, ironically, shall be by its own hand, against itself. This is no proverb or prophecy. In short, it is about America’s so-called freedom. It is also about fear, but, not of loosing their freedom, but to elude what would surely be a grim isolation. Isolation, however counter-intuitive this may seem, is irrevocably certain. Redoubt America, its people and power will be forced to confront an ugly, terrifying truth; that is that their defenses (i.e D.Dept.) have failed, war has come home to roost and no one will be able to save them from it, even if they could.
Could you elucidate: particularly the fourth sentence?
I think some people here need to turn down the bellicose ranting a notch or too. There really is no point in reiterating the US Empires numerous war crimes, as far as I can personally recall, they go back to Operation Linebacker and has just continued ever since. We are all aware. No need for the beerbox calls. Many European states have been complicit in this fraud, too. Yes we are aware of that too, after all some of us live there/here. Are we going to do anything about it? Well, yes maybe.
Politics in Europe is not clear cut one directional as in the US. Other things influence the public opinion as well. But never make the mistake to disregard the grassroots movements across Europe that are firmly anti war. Unfortunately they too have been infiltrated by “state actors” , not necessarily born here. But the antiwar movements exist and survive. We that are engaged politically have some more urgent things on the agenda, than a war in Syria.
We face a swing to the right from largely destructive nationalist movements, hello Russia is that you? Or who are financing them?
We, as in Sweden, have taken in about 110 00 refugees in a rather short time. Mainly Afghans and Syrians, many pretty well educated, as I personally have experienced first hand, receiving refugees as a volounteer force. The y urgently need housing, which hardly is there and need some sorts of integration, which is working albeit slowly. But it is working and successfully too.
We have a crime wave among youth that is unheard of. Even though general crime is falling and has been falling for years, the profilic shootings and bombings have grabbed the headlines of a sensationalist press and public opinion, so the general consensus is that we are “unsafe”. Nothing could be more untrue. The bombings and shootings are reminiscent of the Danish gang wars of the late 90ties and early 2000’sends.
I live in Sweden’s third largest city, a fairly prosperous city, a city that grows with ca. 6000 new inhabitants every year. it has since 2001. This is not sustainable. The influx means tha local unemployment across the board is a staggering 14 % , double the national of 7 %. Housing available are today mostly ownership, rents have become hard to find, and the going price for a 3 bedroom flat is about 200 000 $ , a considerable sum in a equal economy country, especially for first time buyers. It is neither Social or Democratic. The city at the same time faces obstruction from municipalities around it, that have no intention of fulfilling the their share of quotas of refugees, loading them of in shacks. Malmoe has estimated a 1000 children who do not have a home, who are destitute. Swedish citizens. Citizens in one of the wealthiest countries on earth.
Not any Swede I have spoken to /with hold to the opinion that Russia is a threat. We are vry aware of the big bear in the east and recognize that Russia (formerly known as the USSR) has security interests that must be heeded. The Finns have done that exceptionally well and is still a sovereign nation. We in Sweden WILL not join Nato, there is no flavor for that, especially not now.
I had to put this rant in, as too many of the contributors here do not understand European politics today. They comment largely from an American perspective (Even Saker himself, as much as I do respect his point of view) and the American perspective utterly fails, because they have never been honest to themselves and never towards the EU experiment. The EU experiment largely cut off American influence in European politics. They were made superfluous, largely due to French influence. The EU is slowly finding its own legs to stand on, we have shed the traitorous Brits, an evil outpost for the ocrs of Morgul, and have to try to navigate the troubled waters, being a joint between Eurasia and Europe, with out upsetting things to much. A difficult task with 27/28 nations having their say.
Unfortunately, both the Saker and UNZ harbors more wreckers than builders, and that is a shame, many unvoiced people work on the project called Europe and can and will do that with any honest participant, wheter Russia which are our culturally brethren or any other nation which values we agree too, Hezbollah , Iran.
Politicians like Tage Erlander, Oluf Palme, Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel are not born every year. Their sanity and vision have been instrumental of bringing us whree we are now in human development, and we will go further.
Swedes. we have elections this year! Go and reject th vile. Reject VILE natiolism as found in SD, and emboby natiolism as found in any other party that embodies cooperation.
Little Abe, enough of the virtue-signalling. Most of us here share anti-war opinions, so no need for your primus inter pares soap-boxing.
You should try harder to step outside the Swedish school-enforced frame of reference. Nationalism is a perfectly valid response to globalism, and your attempts to tie it to rightist politics are embarrassing. The Visegrad perspective is perfectly legitimate, and reflects not only human nature but a keen observational insight into the current Euro-mess. Are you really unaware of the CIA’s long-documented involvement in the use of forced migration as a soft weapon? And the key involvement of CIA-funded front groups in migrant trafficking? Try looking a little deeper …
I have lived in Sweden and know, as you do, some very sophisticated and well-educated persons from Afghan, Syria and other parts of the MENA. Indeed, I have worked with some and am proud to call them colleagues – but the bulk of the chaotic and uncontrolled migration into Sweden is not cut from this cloth.
The youth who are responsible for the alarming breakdown in law and order in Husby, Rinkeby, parts of Malmoe, u.s.w. are nothing like the biker gangs you so blithely refer to. They are traumatised and often near-sociopathic men of fighting age, who hate much of what Sweden represents, have no desire whatsoever to assimilate, and regard Swedish women as fresh meat. I have met some of these ones too – have you?
There are too many Swedes who go just a little further than you do, and collaborate in the most shameful ways. My step-daughter (in Bromma) was raped by a young Muslim boy from Somalia, but would not report him in case the poor soul suffered from ‘a racist police response’. I argued that failing to report the youth would leave him at liberty to rape again, and thus put other Swedish girls at risk, but she was unable to understand this. Last week another self-hating Swedish woman working at a refugee center in Sölvesborg, who had a sexual relationship with a self-proclaimed 18-year-old Afghani refugee, refused to inform on him to authorities after he sexually abused her 12-year-old daughter. I could give you more examples.
There have been 3 violent gang rapes in Malmoe in the last 2 months alone, at least one of which was broadcast on Facebook by the perpetrators. I’m sure you remember the girl who had lighter fluid poured into her vagina and then set alight … The police have responded with draconian measures, and suggest that all women should stay indoors or ‘walk in pairs’. And for those who feel really threatened, they issue ‘Don’t rape me’ armbands.
Just because the USA deep state is despicable, dangerous and reaching a crisis point, is NOT an excuse for ignoring inhuman behaviour closer to home.
Sweden is now the rape capital of the world, thanks to the cultural enrichment organised by people like Barbara Spectre and her ilk. Police have now given up – they no longer bother even to investigate the violent rapes of very young children. Get used to it. This is the future for the whole of Europe – just a third world sharia hellhole.
In Australia we have a growing problem with gang violence by recent immigrants/refugees/asylum seekers who have no desire to assimilate.
I am not sure under which heading they arrived.
Although, I think someone who immigrates to Australia and jumps through all the hurdles is probably more likely to want to assimilate that someone who is fleeing their own country for whatever reason, an asylum seeker.
Australia has a rich history of assimilating immigrants. Indeed, Australia has prospered because of immigration.
I am sure that most of the recent immigrants/refugees/asylum seekers also will contribute to Australia.
However, all the PC correct bullshit that prevents us from calling a spade a shovel means the young thugs are not bought to justice. It is a growing problem and one that will not be addressed by PC correct butterflies wanting to give these thugs a hug.
I remember about two decades ago a friend who was also PC and oh so concerned with the world said that all the problems of the world could be solved by simply having open borders.
Well, in effect, we are having that experiment now in Europe.
It does not seem to be going well.
Maybe it is the future. Maybe one day in a couple of hundred years we will all happily share this planet. A planet without borders.
However, for now our influences are nationalism and religion.
My experience in assimilation comes from marrying a Chinese woman and moving between China and Australia. Language was not the main problem. After all, it is fairly straight-forward to learn a language superficially. Enough to get a glass of water and find out where the toilet is. It was culture that was the major hurdle. Culture goes deep.
I believe the Jesuits said something like, “if you give me child for the first seven years, then I have that child for life”
Europe’s open-heart policy is an experiment in nationalism and culture.
A friend of mine is a young 30 years old German man. He is exceptionally intelligent and is currently sailing through an International Affairs Degree at the Australian National University with high distinctions. The head of the department has already offered him a job. Germany’s loss, Australia’s gain. Why did he want to leave Germany? He says the Germany he grew up in, that his parent’s grew up in is drowning in a flood of immigration.
He does not want to be part of the experiment.
Wonder if Australia will join the experiment of inviting a tidal wave of immigrantss/refuges/asylum seekers.
We do indeed live in interesting times.
Australia has signed multi billion dollar contact with USA to take millions of septic tanks (yanks,) if the USA is nuked or Yellowstone explodes. Won’t that be excellent.!
See how the hysteria is absolutely relentless…encouraging first strike……

Head Russian banker speaks out from Davos – “sanctions are a full-scale economic war”
January 24 , 2017 – Fort Russ News –
Vesti – by Inessa Sinchougova
The head of VTB Bank Andrei Kostin, who is currently in Davos at the Economic Forum, has spoken out in relation to the situation surrounding Western sanctions against Russia.
“What we modestly call sanctions, in fact, is a full-scale economic war that aims to put tremendous pressure on our economy, to restrain its growth, to worsen the living conditions of our people, to worsen our economic development, and thus to influence the domestic political situation in our country, including the elections and the further course of our country’s leadership,” he said.
“Sanctions are a planned, systemic, comprehensive work targetted at a number of industries”, Andrei Kostin believes. However, in his opinion, one should not be afraid as Russia, “of course, has a set of means to counteract this.”
100 years ago , would not military war have been declared by now?

latest re “Minsk”?
Izvestia: Russia’s proposal on Donbass peacekeepers gets international backing
Russia’s draft resolution on deploying peacekeepers will lay the foundation for the work of a special United Nations mission in Donbass. A high-ranking Russian diplomatic source told Izvestia that all international mediators in settling the conflict, including the United States, agree with Russia’s proposal. Moscow suggests that Kiev should introduce “any amendments” to the document (except for deploying peacekeepers to the Russian border) to start the discussion. At Friday’s meeting Russian Presidential Aide Vladislav Surkov and US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker will hash over the ins and outs of the Russian draft resolution and Washington’s proposals. A source close to the Ukrainian presidential administration told the paper that Volker’s recent trip to Kiev was aimed at persuading the leadership to accept the Russian initiative.

Germany insists UN peacekeeping mission should be deployed across Donbass
Kiev had repeated that they planned to put forward their own draft resolution on the peacekeeping mission in Donbass, but this has not been done so far. Ukrainian government sources told Izvestia that Kiev has indeed drawn up an alternative document, but won’t submit it as Paris, Berlin and Washington insist that the Russian document should become the basis for the peacekeeping operation.
Chairman of the board of the NGO Civil Union Armen Martirosyan, who is close to the Contact Group in Minsk, told Izvestia that all sides endorse the Russian draft resolution on peacekeepers. However, it is not beneficial for Kiev to fulfill any agreements ahead of the presidential race, so President Pyotr Poroshenko will again delay making a decision. Head of the State Duma (lower house) Committee for CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Leonid Kalashnikov said peacekeepers in Donbass are needed to protect the mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and may be deployed to the contact line. “But sending them to the border between Ukraine and Russia…This is even ridiculous to discuss. Kiev is doing this to derail the agreements since it is well aware that no one will accept this,” the Russian MP stressed.

All talk, I believe an attack on the Donbass will begin as soon as “Mud Season” ends which is late Spring.
Well, it’s getting boring a little. I mean the descriptions of the insanity of US’s rulers.
Anyone whose brain a bigger than Mattis’s a little shoul understand it!
One positive thing in US policy is a stability and progress – dummy president replaced by stupid one, that replaced by insane after him goes imbecile. I can’t imagine who’s going to be next -).
But there are many of old crazy women and men ready to help if current imbecile went down.
Thanks God, we, Russians, not that happy. After imbecile alcoholic Eltsyn we’ve got not bad alternative.
That’s the only belief for this world to survive.
But, actually we’re very tired from all this stuff and the possibility of US generals to test our conventional and even nuk arms constantly increasing. They can also test if our soldiers who’ve seen Napoleon, Hitler and many others got worse or still the same.
I’m asking US citizens – Is it really interesting to you to get know it for sure?
Anyone who wants to understand the nature of the beast that is the US military should do some intensive research on the fight the American Indians waged against it during and after the US Revolutionary War. In the struggle for North America, the Indians first allied themselves with the French who controlled Canada until 1763. After the British defeated the French in the Seven Years War (called here the French and Indian War), they sought an accommodation with the Indians west of the Allegheny Mountains, seeking to keep American settlers from the thirteen colonies out. But the Americans, led by stalwarts such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, had only one intent: take the Indians’ land all the way to the Mississippi River, exterminating the tribes and destroying their way-of-life completely. Jefferson even advocated getting the Indian in debt to American traders to make them more pliable. Naturally, the Indians sided with the British in the Revolutionary War and maintained this alliance all the way through the War of 1812. The Indians were then led by Shawnee war chief Tecumseh, viewed today by Canadians as a national hero who saved their nation from an American invasion via Detroit. Of course the Indians lost the overall war and with the Removals of the 1820s and 1830s were banished to the west, at least those few who remained alive. Throughout this saga the Indians had no illusions about American motives. Their name for the Americans was the “Long Knives.” In fact, Tenskwatawa, the Shawnee Prophet and younger brother of Tecumseh, said that, while the Indians, and even the French and British, had been created by the Great Spirit, the Americans were the offspring of the Evil One. The Indians knew that no treaty signed by the Americans meant anything, that all treaties were written to be broken, and that all the Americans ever cared about was taking the Indians’ land and resources. To do this they would lie, steal, murder, destroy Indian lives and culture with liquor, and even infect the tribes with contagious diseases. The Americans took great pains that when they sent armies into Indian country they would do so in the autumn when they could destroy the villagers’ crops just before harvest and so subject the women, children, and elderly to starvation when winter came. The objective of the American armies was not to fight Indian warriors in a pitched battle but rather to burn villages and fields. Sounds a lot like the Americans in Vietnam and Iraq, doesn’t it?
So I want to ask whether the nature of the Long Knives has really changed from the late 18th century to today? I would say not. The people of the world are waking up increasingly to who the Long Knives are, how they wage war, and what they really want–i.e., your land resources. To get it they will do anything. Those who stand in the way are killed. All their words are lies to cover up their real intent. Just listen to Nikki Haley. Today Mattis is one of the high war chiefs of the Long Knives– a worthy successor to stalwarts of the past like William Henry Harrison, Andrew Jackson, and many others who became famous as executioners of genocide. And it is very hard from making the case that President Donald Trump is any different. To him, ALL other nations are “shitholes.” He speaks like the leader of the Long Knives that he is. And like the other leaders of the Long Knives throughout history, he has the economic, religious, social, journalistic, and educational elites lined up behind him, panting for their share of the loot, and painting pretty pictures of deceit over the skull and crossbones reality of this nation of pirates. Of course not all Americans go along with it. A significant number do not and never have. But even many of these have swallowed the anti-Russian propaganda the Long Knife press has been dishing out and that Mattis is counting on to sell their planned world war. Wake up people.
And it wasn’t just the american leaders and military, it was the american people, as well, who were overwhelmingly in favour of the genocide. Their newspapers often openly calling for extermination of Indians. Excellent comment, Rick.
I believe that it was in the 1850-189 frame of California history that the State appropriated money for paying a bounty on Indian scalps…a bounty of, I recall, 10 dollars each. There was thus created a small industry of privateer murders, paid by lawful means.
another public secret…this does not accord with canon, eh?
Well said! I couldn’t agree more.
What you have said is in close accord with the stories I heard by campfires from Navajo men, in the 1960’s.
Tactically they used the Army stratigy – as an example, a canyon now named for “string’mmupbythe balz” so to say…that was the name in Navajo of a specific geographic site…where the Navajoes used their own camp as a lure, caught the US Cav from behind and above….in a cauldron – where the women waited for the survivors..
This is a desperate tactic…but they remember it every day.
And also in accord with many other sources I knew from the past.
You are dead on, my friend…and in a precise sense – correct. Bravo!

US war crimes by far surpass anything that was done by the Nazi regime, in scale and character.
The USA is in cultural and spiritual decay. War, violence, murder, napalm, MOAB, Charlie Manson, Bushes, Clinton’s, KKK, slavery and on and on and on.
The world has feelings of trust or affection felt in certain cases of kidnapping or hostage-taking by a victim toward a captor. Stockholm syndrome!
The only sovereign nation that has escaped this evil is the DPRK.
What a bizarre world we live in!
“US Secretary of Defense ‘General’ Mattis … [is] a political general, pure and simple,”
Nothing new there. Ever since the creation of the MIC, the very top level of the US military exists purely to sustain this self-licking ice cream cone. There is a very careful process to reduce the potential candiates for the higher and higher positions to more and more faithful yes men.

About machine gunning the boats…in the Pacific bombing campaign against Japan this was standard procedure, according to eye witness accounts I have read. It is justified, they say, because the Japanese fitted fishing boats as radio picket warning posts – and it was not possible to distinguish between a civil fishing boat and a militia or reserve naval picket boat.
While the logic does seem to justify in a legalistic sense, it serves to distract from the more strategic policy set in the US war with Japan…which was to starve the people…and, well, fishing… you get it. right?
Japan stuck to the naval laws of war, and the US did not,,,surprise!
So the disguised policy was with Japan the same policy used against the Indians. Not particularly unusual…Tacitus describes it, I believe… Quite probably the boffins will discover a tribe of bonobos that attack the forest garden of another chimp tribe… It’s also time tested, eh?
I do not know about now, but the Japanese I have known are not delusional…and they remembered…and in some ports as USN sailor was liable to get his throat cut. That was many years ago. Thy were angry.
I have no admiration for J. McCain, crasher of aircraft, but several sources indicate that he did not cause the fire on the Forrestal. Wikipedia has an interesting entry on the fire and it seems that several naval officers were reckless with the dated ordinance that blew up but not McCain.
His nicknames say it all…”Johnny Wet-start until he collaborated, then “Song-bird”.
Yes, old ordnance was a factor, as old ordnance would be a factor in any fire, but it was John that did the wet start once too many times…he was known for this sort of behavior, and got away with it due to his connection…daddy the admirl n all that…
Since then he has been a pawn.
I saw the footage of the incident more than once. ‘Somehow a Zuni missile was fired….’ from his aircraft. His father was a high ranking admiral as was his grandfather.

I read stories and remarks these days about “swarms of drones” as some sort of insidious new and somehow unfair tactic. These people do not know what they’re talking about, for the most part.
It’s old stuff. I hear it as a child…and I am 70 years old.
Here’s a fragment of the Pacific campaign, I had knowledge of the tactic from veterans of the ship who were aboard at the time.

Madman Mike Mattis’ chest-beating and street thug threats only serve to disguise the deep-rooted insecurities of the American Empire and its military high command.
In this sense, Mattis’ belligerent rhetoric represents the increasingly pathetic and paranoid character of America, which feels its global hegemony slipping away from its grasp.
The American Hegemon is like a rabid animal, which can only snarl and lash out in petulant anger as meets greater resistance from the rest of the world.
There was one thing he said that was disturbing
“One fundamental precept that America can afford survival”
This tells me a lot
1 basically he admitted that America is on the rocks
2 we will do whatever necessary at whatever cost to the people to survive ie you can afford the cost
Lord Farquaad: Some of you may die, but its a sacrifice I’m willing to make.
“США can do is shout” fourth line from the bottom used Cyrillic letters ???
I agree energy is a big issue, for the war in Syria, however there are several other big reasons for this war crime. USA is protecting its Economic and military domination of the world which is under attack by the Chinese Russian cooperation.
Syria was an attempt to use the same strategy used in Afghanistan, to bankrupt Russia using oil price manipulation. USA and NATO directly or indirectly attacked Venezuela, Brazil, Ukraine, North Africana and the Middle Eastern countries. Just the recent comment on Nord Stream by Trump to the Polish president who was complaining that Russia was bypassing Ukraine and Poland by twinning the Baltic gas pipeline is telling. Trump told him its better for Poland to get LNG from USA that way Russia will not dominate EU using energy. The Polish president must be a real idiot.
USA is protecting the other agencies the World Bank and the IMF, which are used by USA to destabilize countries globally. Every country that they have invaded wanted to join the BRICS, trade in domestic currencies and use the BRICS bank for infrastructure borrowing. The present reserve currency, the petro dollar is under attack by the Chinese currency and the policy to use domestic currencies in world trade. Just the destabilization of Brazil and Argentina is a message that the Empire is picking off the BRICS members and potential members.
Continuation of the Afghanistan war crime is an attempt to get American controlled energy supplies from Central Asia and the Middle East including Israeli Eastern Mediterranean Fields to Pakistan and India however Iran is in the way and so are the Afghanis. Oil is one issue but the other big fish in the USA and NATO murky waters are BRICS, IMF, World Bank, Petro Dollar, and the BRICS Bank
