Cohen’s assertion that no Democratic President wanted detente is clearly false. JFK wanted it and got killed for his efforts. The anti war movement in the 60’s was Left, the anti Reagan wars in Central America were Left. The anti nuclear movement in the 80’s had a strong Left component. I know because I was part of it. The Right has consistently demonized the Left as commies and reds, making it impossible for a Left narrative to take root. The Left has been crushed since the McCarthy era using every dirty trick in the book. Including Nixon undermining LBJ’s peace talks and George Bush Sr. undermining Carter during the hostage crisis. And the Democratic Party leadership refused to support the candidacy of George McGovern. Every attempt by the Left has been squashed–by the Democratic leadership itself, which is called Left, when it is absolutely NOT. Witness the sabotage of the mildly Left campaign of Bernie Sanders. And before that, Dennis Kucinich,, Jesse Jackson and Henry Wallace.
President Kennedy came to a certain realisation and amended his view point AFTER he’d gotten elbow deep in war mongering and blood letting- suffering more than one big scare from which he appeared to have learned some unwelcome lessons. He talked some about changes and then he was gone. He was nowhere near achieving anything like what the three Republican Presidents President Cohen mentioned. He never even got started. One argues this was not his fault. Nevertheless he never achieved what Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon and Reagan did achieve. He did, in fact, start out in the opposite direction…
As for the anti-war movement and the anti-nuclear weapons movement of the late 60s and 70s, where are all these peaceful leftist flower people today? Oh, yes, they’re in academia, politics, the arts, literature, the administrative and enforcement bureaucracy, the media, the intelligentsia etc. They are throughout the establishment and they have much unearned wealth, power and privilege. So what are these pampered, over-fed, spoiled dim-minded people promoting nowadays? Russiagate, censorship, coercion, austerity, compulsion, theft, corruption, wars on everything and everyone (especially those who disagree with them), violence, hate, injury, destruction, impoverishment and on it goes. They talked beautiful words when they were young but flower words was all they managed to produce. Their hearts and minds were, in the main, full of ignorance and evil for the most of ’em. Their actions and their deeds are the evidence of what was in their hearts and minds all along. Worse, their actions and deeds are the key evidence of what they truly were and are (the vast majority of them at any rate). Hypocrites. Hideous. Twisted. Spoiled. Irresponsible. And, worst of all, immoral.
If what one wants is peace, then being of the left is an impossibility. The two are opposites and the differences irreconcilable.
“If what one wants is peace, then being of the left is an impossibility.”
Pardon, but you’re not talking about the left. You’re talking about a bunch of callow, egocentric kids who never grew up, and many of whom became (or were to begin with) psychopaths.

Professor Stephen F. Cohen is brave to warn of Armageddon – though it seems no one is listening. Yet all the evidence points towards nuclear war. The pattern of history is clear. Power (manifested as interest) has been present in every conflict of the past – no exception. It is the underlying motivation for war. Other cultural factors might change, but not power. Every civilization/nation eventually gets the war it is trying to avoid: utter defeat. This applies as much today in the nuclear age as any other time in history. Deterrence doctrine, made for the 20th century Cold War, for which it arguably worked, is irrelevant in the 21st and will ultimately fail us. It is increasingly unable to prevent the scenarios where Mutual Assured Destruction will be resorted to. Leaders and decision-makers delude themselves, thinking they can avoid that fateful war can be avoided, limited in scale or even won. History has always proven them wrong. https://www.ghostsofhistory.wordpress.com/
Certain members of the ‘human’ race have a very strong Death Wish. Thanatos rules in their twisted psyches. This grows, in part at least, I would say, from their own morbid terror of Death, that we also see in their efforts to ‘control’ Death by becoming its most enthusiastic facilitators, in numerous aggressions, massacres, genocides, training of death-squads etc. And in their vulgar, debased, ‘religion’, with its bloodthirsty ‘God’ (just the Death-worshippers’ egos projected onto the cosmos)simply slavering for the End Times and Armageddon that they, too, so deeply desire. I think Pence may be the finest example of this type in current Thanatopian politics. Pure, malignant, worthless, inhumane, Evil.
Trump is the commander of the military and for all intents and purposes, the kingpin of Nato. He had better find some humanity in his heart or at least some moral sense in a hurry. NATO and the U.S. continue to exhibit aggression against Russia. The latest I’ve heard is they intend to sail into the Sea of Azov. They are inciting to war. Of course, Russia will simply block the Kerch Strait. I don’t expect Russia to open fire first, though perhaps it is getting near the point when they should to warn them to back off. They may try to create a scene with this and suddenly attack Kaliningrad. This is not reality TV. This is not Trump playing with more hookers. This involves hundreds of millions of lives and the entire planet. And there is a gang of criminals, Trump, Bolton, Pompeo, Abrams, CIA running the Empire along with European stooges. God have mercy on us.
North Stream 2 about to be completed, securing Russian-German cooperation
ISIS defeated, peace may break out in Syria any moment
Turkey about to defect
Rise of popular national movements on the continent
US withdrawal from INF treaty
B52s forward deployed to England and running mock attacks against Kaliningrad
NATO exercises in the Black Sea involving Ukraine and Georgia
All options on the table regarding Venezuela
British civil servants secretly drafting legislation to restore order
British army preparing for any contingencies
Frequent high level meetings in Brussels
Such a constellation of motivation, means and opportunity has always been frightful.
What if the BREXIT is a ruse?
What if it’s not, but Russia thinks it is anyway?
An intelligent, informed voice, a voice of sanity. Vox clamantis in deserto, I’m afraid.
(P.S. You may check also his 29 March 2019 talk at The New York Military Affairs Symposium, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfjsB5bHxpM )
yeah – no one ever mentions Rand Paul – he’s right there and knows the loops and the pitfalls of politics in Washington DC
May Prof. Cohen live a long and healthy life and may millions of ears hear his voice and millions of eyes read his books and articles.
A wise and knowledgeable citizen.
Thanks for this video dialogue.

Quoting, “You’re talking about a bunch of callow, egocentric kids who never grew up, and many of whom became (or were to begin with) psychopaths.”
Elements of the left in other words…
So much for peace.
