It could be done because Bolivia’s natural resources (oil, gas, lithium, etc) were nationalized and were there to support Evo’s promise of social justice.
Bolivia was a socialism that worked, and this is not acceptable to Washington geopolitics.
The white spanish elites never accepted that ‘indios’ should have three meals a day or even obtain a decent paying work.
Throw dollars into this mix of white racist and new born christians (evangelicals) and they will start a little colour revolution for the sake of ‘democracy’.

Latinos have never been vicious enough to defend their sovereignty. We noticed it well when comparing Vietnam and Chile/Argentina/Brazil some 45 years ago. It might be that U.S will now withdraw mostly from Eurasia but took whole Americas with tough hand.

Cuba showed Latin Americans can get and keep their sovereignty. The failure of many Latin American independence attempts is due to not giving the right in their countries a sound and permanent booting. Unless people do that, their gains are only transitory and easily reversed.
This applies everywhere, not just Latin America. Look at what happened to the usa under reagan, or the uk under thatcher. Both countries were headed in the direction of more people poser, less oligarch power, but soft fascist coups reversed this and turned them into the banana republic govno holes they still remain as today.
I’m afraid there is lesson here that I”m not sure every country dealing with Empire realises.

If you let run newspapers, or set up NGO or have embassies in your country, they use these. They use “Friendship Societies”. Then they go about subverting your culture, to change it to one that favours approval of theirs. They use this to attack that one essential we have in the face of a world full of change – our own sense of who we are, our identity which is rooted in our national identity.
Then they find the most easily subverted and use them.
Then they roll out the playbook scenario for a “Coup d’etat by other means”
Just like Ukraine, Serbia, Syria, tried in Venezuela, now Bolivia.
