8 July 2021 19:30 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation
On July 8, Special Presidential Representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov held consultations with a delegation from the Taliban’s political office. The discussion focused on the situation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the prospects for starting intra-Afghan talks.
The Russian side voiced their concern over the mounting tensions in the northern regions of Afghanistan and urged [the Taliban] not to allow these tensions to spread outside the county. The Taliban delegation reassured the Russian side that the Taliban would not violate the borders of the Central Asian counties and also provided guarantees of the safety of foreign countries’ diplomatic and consular missions in Afghanistan.
The representatives of the Taliban reaffirmed their interest in securing a lasting peace in their country through negotiations, taking into account the interests of all ethnic groups living in the country, as well as their readiness to observe human rights, including the rights of women, in keeping with Islamic standards and Afghan traditions.
It was separately emphasised that the Taliban is firmly determined to ward off the threat of ISIS in Afghanistan and eradicate drug production in the country after the end of the civil war.
Now many Uzbeks and Tajikis from Afghanistan will flee to their respective republics. Understandably that those people aren’t exactly happy about an islamic caliphate government in Afghanistan. It is pivotal that Tashkent and Dushanbe start planning how to receive those masses of refugees
“It was separately emphasised that the Taliban is firmly determined to ward off the threat of ISIS in Afghanistan and eradicate drug production in the country after the end of the civil war.”
Let us hope that this will come about.
I also hope that the large number of Aghanis in Iran will be able to return home safely.
I believe when the Talibs were in charge before one thing they got right was to stop the Opium production, then the Americans started it again.
“the Taliban is firmly determined to ward off the threat of ISIS in Afghanistan and eradicate drug production in the country”
Meaning the Taliban has just signed up on the side of civilization against these two staples of the empire’s CIA clandestine ops.
Well done, Russian diplomacy. What we need are visceral demonstrations of terminated CIA handlers (not proxies) to drive home the message.
Even Wall Street Journal published an article that the Taliban rooted out opium production in the first reign. Later US army gave protection to opium producers. Opium and cocaine was flown into the US through US military base in the dead of night into Ranstein Germany, and the US banks laundered the fubdsm If I recall correctly in 2010 $346 billion of Afghanistan drug money was laundered through US money-centre banks like bank of America and Wells Fargo. Please verify. So much for war on terror.
The bigger question is …Is the US redeploying or readying to be eaten by Russian Bear or Chinese Dragon?
The Taliban will probably route out poppy production, but regardless, fewer than 10% of opiate [heroin] addicts ever stop using. So some country [Turkey?] is about to become the new epicenter of production. In the west, there will be growth in addiction treatment centers, or replacement therapy, but the addiction will continue until many addicts die. Maybe the production of fentanyl will skyrocket, IDK, but I do know there will be many users in search of new supply,
From what I’ve read, [lost my source] China has been mining all along in AFG for rare earths and minerals during the time the US has been occupying. Just as China is the first ones in to extract hydrocarbons when the west obliterates a MENA country, Libya, Iraq etc.
“…eradicate drug production in the country after the end of the civil war.”
Hopefuly, Talibans will copy Chinese proven method of eradicating drug industry from their ruined country. I also hope that Rusia and China will help Afgans to quickly start exploitation of their vast reserves of gold, platinum, silver, copper, iron, chromite, lithium, uranium, and aluminium roughly estimated at $1-3 trillion.
Instead of being beheaded on public square, Afgan drug dealers and their enablers should find new meaning of life in mining industry.
$3 trillion is the amount USSA have spent on creating this illusion of The War On Terror. With energy prices on a steep upward trajectory the cost of extraction will render mining an unprofitable exercise. The mountainous terrain and pockets of ISISrael faux jihadis will mean only the foolhardiest of foreign miners flocking to the country.
Therefore no, the Opium Trade will remain the largest source of foreign income; on the plus side a bigger share of the profits for the Taliban with the CIA as junior partners.
“…the Opium Trade will remain the largest source of foreign income; on the plus side a bigger share of the profits for the Taliban with the CIA as junior partners.”
Those who never had opportunity
to enjoy burden of occupation on their own back tend to overestimate value of Profit. In Afgans case, not even that. Only “privilege” to share profit with CIA.
Seriously?
Talibans emphasized destruction of drug industry in their first message to the world. They are perfectly aware of monetary loss. But they will destroy it anyway. Because every $ from drugs will be used against them.
No $$$ – no CIA junior partners.
Which mean that only the foolhardiest of foreign mercenaries will be willing to face battle hardened Talibans in their own enviroment.(Only now without air support).
After betrayng Talibans decades ago, and now betraying everybody else, Americans have no one left to talk to in Afghanistan.
I do not have any doubt that in couple of years Talibans will meticulously eradicate every source of US profit in Afganistan.
I do doubt they have knowlege how to kickstart profitable production of their own. Luckily, there will be support of Iran, China and Russia. You know – enemy of my enemy…
Afgans may come up OK in the end, we shall see.
Afghanistan has proven Mackinder-Mahan-Spykman detractors right once again.
Without the US-UK, everyone else can find a compromise.
No Anglo, no cry.
This is an anxious time for America & Europe’s Pharmaceutical Companies. Hell, how else are US.gov going to keep their citizens in the comatose state they’ve been accustomed to for the last 2 decades?
Worrying times, possibly Civil War . . . . . fingers crossed.
” Taliban is firmly determined to ward off the threat of ISIS in Afghanistan and eradicate drug production in the country after the end of the civil war.”
Good.
I remember last time they took power the entire heroin market crashed in Norway, there was NO heroin or very little heroin until the u.s invaded. After they invaded the heroin price halved, from ca 4000NOK,- to 1500-2000NOK 🤷♂️
The Taliban acted swiftly to assure the one enemy they don’t want that the Russian sphere (Central Asia) will not be disturbed by their Islamic revolution inside Afghanistan.
No border crossing to fight inside Tajikistan, no allowance of ISIS to form in Afghanistan, no revitalization of AQ.
Nice words.
The reality is that they know with absolute historical certainty that the Russians would devastate the Taliban if they violated any of these promises. The Russian Aerospace Force could decimate their force structure, their depots, their various headquarters and command posts, their communications, their barracks and storehouses and whatever vehicles or military hardware they inherit from the US and Afghan Army in their retreat and surrender.
So, they came in peace to assure peace for themselves.
The Russians have been “talking” to the Taliban and guiding negotiating between the Afghan government and the Taliban for well over a year.
Russia is a stakeholder in Afghanistan’s peaceful development. Russia also wants the opium trade to cease shipments into the Central Asia stans and the Russian Federation. Drugs is a big issue and its fellow traveler HIV is damaging Russian society. The Taliban can win big if it ceases opium production.
The Taliban is a very minority group within Afghanistan. It has been around for almost 30 years, yet has a small following. Its forces are around 75,000 fighters. Though the US couldn’t defeat it, the Russians would pound it into the rock and gravel of Afghanistan if they mount any threat to its neighbors.
The war in Afghanistan will continue so long as the US has a presence there. I believe the US will keep chaotic actions going, even with a lowered military group. They have 16,000 contractors there; the 300,000 Afghan Army won’t totally disappear so long as payrolls can be kept up. And they will arrange a new US proxy army for “democracy”.
How the Taliban deal with all this is what makes their moves in Moscow these past two days very interesting.
I suspect they will hook up with the Russian GRU and SVR and become a major source of Intel for Russia to evaluate what the US is doing, what Turkey is going to do, what ISIS is planning and what remnants of AQ are planning.
It’s over, but it is not ending. The Pentagon cannot accept the loss. The CIA wants the drugs to sell. American mineral resource corporations want the minerals in the ground. Version 2.0 is about to begin.
These American and Canadian companies could not mine there during the occupation due to poor security. What is the prospect of doing that when the military is no longer in control? I say it is over and done with. All they could do is perhaps fan the chaos. Once the force factor is clearly accounted for they would not pay me enough to risk my life as a merc to be on their side. These so called contractors are not dumb there is always a war somewhere i can make a buck for but you have to be smart to pick the right side to stay alive for another day.
Can’t wait to see Russia actually use all of these super duper capabilities that you talk about, in a real war.
I wonder if it will all turn out to be a dud, you know, like Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia has probably the most advanced arsenal in the world, and they buy weapons from everyone, not just the US.
A lot of super duper weapons in the hands of the Saudis. And yet they are being defeated by the Yemenis.
Your talking down to the Taliban and looking down your nose at them reveals more about you than it does about Russian military capabilities or the Taliban.
The Russians have already been defeated once in Afghanistan. No need for all this big talk, after the fact, you feel me? It doesn’t reflect well on Russia.
Larchmonter445 has some first-rate analysis, but his contempt/disrespect for Muslims bubbles to the surface every so often. It’s a reminder that every analyst has flaws, and it’s good to know what the flaws are.
Unnecessary. If you are unable to comment on the real issues, there is no need to comment on posters. It shows off your own paucity of input. I have this strange idea you’re telling fibs as well.
Up your game, do not try and reduce someone else’s game. With this issue, seemingly your game is non-existent.
@Anonymous
Russia CAN attack Taliban targets in Afghanistan and eliminate them if they try to invade Tajikistan. It doesn’t necessarily need to have boots on the ground in Afghanistan. They’ve learned the lesson and wouldn’t be stupid to do the same mistake again. But the fact remains that it will do everything it can to stop the Taliban from moving beyond the Afghan border.
The Taliban and the Houtis in Yemen remain undefeated and are becoming major political players for sovereignty.
100%, there’s a big difference between Hanafi Muslims (Taliban) and the Wahabbi splinter group of the Hanbali school – ISIS and Alqaeda will be rooted out.
Iran, Russia and China will be the Taliban’s allies in developing mining and agriculture and western Asia will be secure.
Just drive the Anglo-Zionist Empire’s mercenaries, NGOs, corporations and Embassies out and nationalize EVERYTHING in lieu of reconstruction and restitution!
