Seyed Mohammad Marandi: Professor at the University of Tehran and adviser to the Iran delegation at talks on restoring the JCPOA in Vienna.
At the Vienna talks on restoring the Iran nuclear deal, the US and EU are accusing Iran of refusing to compromise. Mohammad Marandi, a University of Tehran professor advising the Iran delegation in Vienna, says that the compromise was the nuclear deal itself, and the problem is the US refusal to abide by its own commitments and lift the sanctions that target Iranian civilians.
Congratulations Aaron Mate on hosting the brilliant Mohammad Marandi. The west has no equivalent to Mr. Marandi.
Excellent interview. Thanks for posting. Aaron Matè is a gem.
It is refreshing to hear truth and reason being plainly spoken. One can only admire Iran’s courage and fortitude. The lines from the poem Invictus come to mind: “my head bloodied but unbowed”.
Mr Marandi always reminds me of an Iranian fellow I met long ago at a party near Cal Tech – the Shaw was in power then – he looks like him but the interesting thing is he speaks the same way… The fellow at the party said, softly, to a circle of Americans> “You would not say the things you say if you knew more about it.”
Now that the Shaw is long gone, our friend Mr Marandi gets to let us know about it, the reality. A circle closed!
Bravo!
Is Iran going to ask it can get compensation for stolen oil that USA sold?
Manadi advocates> Not only the oil, the costs of the crimes and the remedies, probably in rubles, yuan, or gold. Marandi advocates using this debt as “leverage”. In Vietnam the deal was reparations for POW’s…and the US did not pay, and the POW’s were covered up by (among many) that good man “Songbird”. And they’re most-all dead. But times change. Maybe the US will give them payment in kind…maybe Hawaii. Maybe an aircraft carrier, who can say? Times change. And the US is changing very fast, but we don’t know the new situation yet, no one can. I don’t imagine the US will take these debts seriously, as it’s broke, and can’t pay. Still there’s land to trade…and that land was mostly stole, so it costs nothing to give it away.
Wonderful enlightening interview from Aaron Maté and the incomparable Professor Marandi.
Excellent interview putting forth the other side of the story. I sure hope Prof. Marandi doesn’t end up on Israels list of expendable foreign intellectuals.

Assal Rad. @AssalRad explains
US: #Iran cant have nuclear weapons while we have 1000s & let Israel have them
Iran: ok
US: Iran must submit to inspections
Iran: ok
US: Iran must have limits on its program
Iran: ok
US: Iran must return to compliance
Iran: lift sanctions
US: Iran isn’t serious about deal
Excellent interview. Prof. Marandi always provides a well backgrounded, well reasoned and comprehensive explanation of world events as they affect Iran, and Aaron Mate asks the right questions to elucidate Iran’s position on the JPCOA. Thanks to both of you.
Thank you professor Marandi for a clear-eyed and unemotional overview of this issue. I would only like to (respectfully) make a small observation regarding the comment about Yemen and it being the worst crime in contemporary history. I submit that that title is arguably best placed upon North Korea, with some 30% of its population genocide in a “police action” and followed by 60+ years of chocking/murderous sanctions. This ommission is all the more surprising as, considering NK’s attempts at security and sovereignty via its nuclear program, it is a direct parallel/comparison to Iran’s fight (whether it seeks nuclear weapons or not) with the Empire.
Cheers,

I have seen interviews with Prof. Marandi before. This is the first time that I have seen him angry. And he wasn’t just angry, he was really, really angry.
I wonder what is behind the change.
