Greetings to the Saker community and readers.
This year marked the 70th anniversary since the end of World War Two. And it has proved that the world has changed dramatically. The parades in Moscow and Beijing and the subsequent snubbing by the “West” prove that in today’s politics everything is fair; even the dishonour of the memory of the millions of people that died so that Europe can be free of Nazism and fascism.
The disturbing thing though is that this is not a new trend. The demonization of not only the political opposition but mostly of ideas is a characteristic long present in European politics. And it got really ugly when the former Soviet / Warsaw pact states joined the EU. Since then there has been an endless stream of attempts to equate 1940s Russia with Nazi Germany, the Red Army with Wehrmacht. And to top it off, it was proposed in a legislation draft supposedly designed to promote tolerance that communism be branded illegal and whoever promotes or ever promoted communism to face heavy legal consequences. Whether one agrees with communism or not is irrelevant; the fact that a supposedly democratic collection of Nations will ban an ideology “just because” is deplorable.
At the same time, while Western leaders are busy rewriting history, China and especially Russia are busy making it. The recent move in Syria by Russia, good or bad as it may be seen depending on one’s point of view, it is judged almost universally as necessary. Putin has made it clear in his UN speech that terrorism is a threat to Russia’s security – and indeed global security – in the same order as Hitler once was. He also let the door open to everybody to repeat what humanity has accomplished in WWII: Set whatever ideological / political / historical differences aside long enough to prevail over genuine evil. Iran already signed up for this endeavour. For how long the door will remain open, and if the EU people will force their leaders to wake up in time remains to be seen. As far as the USA is concerned, I do not have any illusions of them waking up. As the saying goes – the monkey cannot let go. However, I sincerely hope to be proved wrong.
Still, the fact that we might have Mujahedeen Part 2 (aka stinger missiles finding their way to extremists to fight Russian aviation) is worthy of THE stupidity prize as Saker put it. Has anyone with the slight modicum of logic ever wondered what will happen if a Russian pilot in a SU-30 patrolling the Middle East skies spots a transport plane and knowing with an almost absolute certainty that it carries anti-aircraft missiles that will be used against him? (Rhetorical question as the US has deployed two squadrons of F-22s in the Middle East ).
It will do well to Western leaders to read a few Greek tragedies and emphasise on the notion of Hubris. In the meantime, I will conclude with a poster I saw a few years back in Europe, when the anti-Russia hysteria first started under the guise of anti-communism – unfortunately can’t find it online. It looked like this though:

The people in Russia and China remember. It will be nice if the people of the “West” remember too. And they have to choose whether they will spend their time rewriting history or actually join those who make history.

I suspect that the original story was floated in the British press for the purpose of provoking a Russian response, so that we’d see more articles about the response, and so on and so on, thus giving rise to larger and larger numbers of successive articles around the world about “Russian fighters threatening British pilots.”
Just another chapter in the ongoing propaganda war.

I sympathise and agree with your view that bombing and killing through famine and economic warfare was a massive crime committed by Britain in the 19th and 20th Century. Well, maybe it’s part and parcel of Putins “Big Scheme” for Ukraine! Hard to think of any other reason. When trying to estimate the “why” of Russia’s actions, especially with Mr. Putin at the helm, I think you need to draw a big picture with a wide brush.
Perhaps it’s part of a preparation of some sort, getting Ukraine ready for further steps in isolating the Neo-Nazis, prior to uniting the rest of the people, and constructing the sort of Ukraine Russia is OK having on it’s doorstep.
You know, using Saul Alisnsky’s rule 12 against the very enemy who has been using it so successfully itself.
And the first thing you need to do that, is money in the right hands.

The only answer is the Russia’s Central bank, the entire banking system, and the finance ministry in Russia is still fully occupied by the neo-con liberals, who answer to Washington, not to Kremlin.
They are just rubbing it into the Russian people faces since the beginning of the liberation of Syria.

Consequently it may lie outside your perception that opponents are at their most vulnerable when they think they have sole or prime access to “levers of control”.

Could you perhaps check out on youtube an interview Putin did – enter “Putin Press Conference July 17th English Subtitles”, and see his comments in response to a question regarding Ukraine receiving IMF funds. In it he makes it clear he regards Ukraine as (a) almost a subset of Russia, with a future inextricably linked to Russia, and (b) that it is in Russia’s interest to make sure it is funded once it stops shelling Donbass, and that Russia knows exactly where the funds are going. He makes it perfectly clear he sees it as being in Russia’s long term interest to fund Ukraine, monitoring the funds.
It doesn’t seem quite in line with your “infiltrated banking” theory, I wonder what your thoughts might be on this?

I think its very complicated.Russia wants a normal friendly relationship with Ukraine (minus the junta).They want it to “appear” like there is no reason not to have it.They also want the Ukrainian people to “see” Russia feels that way.That is one side of it.There are other sides.Russian (and probably Ukrainian ) business people (oligarchs) want to make money in Ukraine regardless of who they deal with.Some of those business people are the 5th column we hear about.Then there is the fact that Russian companies already have investments in subsidiaries in Ukraine.To keep them running (again to make money off of them) they need to invest in them.Put all of those reasons together (and probably more I’m not sure about) and that is why they do it.I’m not sure its the smartest idea.But its their decision to make.

One of the reasons for that (I believe) goes back to the history of that pre-war and wartime region.Most people forget (if they ever knew) most of those countries were dictatorships during the pre-war years (really only Czechoslovakia wasn’t).And most of them became either direct allies of nazi Germany (Slovakia,Hungary,Romania,Bulgaria,Croatia,or had quite a few pro-nazi elements in them, Lithuania,Latvia,Estonia,Albania,Slovenia.Of the EU countries who where not in that list of nazi allies,Poland was a dictatorship before the war and was one of the most Russophobic countries in the World.While the Czech Republic has been a stooge for Germany since the fall of the USSR.So of course the old nazi allied states would revive their hatred of the Russians from the pre-war and wartime eras.They consider their countries today as the direct descendants of that period of their statehood.And want to wash away memories of the postwar period.They glorify the pre-war dictatorships,and in some countries,glorify those that followed Hitler in his “crusade against Russia”.So what else would we expect than that they would jump on the NATO Russophobe bandwagon.
Thanks for that Uncle Bob. I am certainly one of those people who never knew the pre-War history of those countries, and the effect that has had on international relations down the years. This is a very interesting topic and additional layer to understanding the entire region.
The more I see – the more sympathetic I get to Stalin. He was, indeed, a murderous tyrant, but he had a twisted logic to him that was aimed, it looks to me, at protecting Russia. How different might things be for Russia now had he not been there and acted as he did?
Given states with those political and cultural attitudes on Russia’s borders and USA planning to nuclear attack Russia at her weakest, no wonder he poured money into acquiring nuclear capability, and then dominating the pro-Fascist, pro-USA countries on her border as a buffer zone.
After all, we see now what happens when Russia removed that buffer – in a heartbeat.

Perhaps you are restricted in your timeframe.
“Soviet” and “Western” policy in the region were significant contributory factors with especially reference to the period 1944 to 1956 which appears to be a greater mystery to some audiences, partly as a consequence of narratives of utility.
It may have passed attention but in Mr. Putin’s speech at the United Nations he was correctly critical of Soviet foreign policy without elaborating in detail.
Some possible areas of interest would likely include but not be limited to:
1. Civil war in Poland 1936 – 1948.
2. Civil war in Ukraine 1941- 1954/5.
3. Civil war in Lithuania 1944 – 1953/4 including the Forest Brotherhood.
4. The efforts of the brothers Dulles and associates 1942 – 1958.
5. The Red Web and similar operations 1945 – 1954/5.
An interesting question to ponder is Why did Mr. Krushchev support the transfer of Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR?
If taken together they might not only shed light on the topics you cite, but also illuminate the question:

Speaking of re-writing or making up history, tomorrow is the scheduled release of the long-delayed MH17 report. Let me guess: It will prove that a Russian BUK missile hand made by Putin in his garage with a warhead filled with cluster bombs disguised as childrens toys was purposely fired by the “Pro-Russian Separatist Terrorists” at a civilian airliner because they hate the “Freedom Loving West”.

What makes you think they would send Stingers by airplane? As long as Erdo-war remains in power, they can just smuggle them across the Turkish border.
And nobody talks about equating Western liberalism with fascism and communism, hm? You do understand that far more people have been killed under that ideology than any other — by wide margin? The fact that no film or documentary has ever been produced about immenseness of the Western crimes under that ideology really speaks for itself. It’s fucking mind-boggling!
