I am getting a deluge of email asking me about Putin’s health. Like I am his personal doctor of something :-)
Well, of course I am not. And to the great disappointment to those who think that I am on the Kremlin’s payroll, I am not. I am not even linked to the Russian security services. So, alas, I have no special information about Putin.
However, I did check a few things.
Moscow appears calm. I even checked a few well-placed webcams. Not a single semi-credible Russian sources confirms Putin’s death or overthrow. Not a single contact of mine is sounding the alarm. No less importantly, the rumors range from death-by-cancer “caused by plastic surgery” to palace coup supported by the Orthodox Church, to Shoigu taking power. When I read that nonsense I am not impressed. One Swiss website mentions that Putin’s alleged sweetheart – Alina Kabaeva – is about to deliver his baby. Maybe, I don’t know.
What I do know is that a coup would be quasi-impossible to pull off, and if that happened 85% plus of the Russian population would be up in arms and *extremely* mad. So if taking power in Russia is extremely hard, keeping it would be even harder. There is no way the Russians today would accept a junta like the one in Kiev, not even a “patriotic” one.
I have been wrong so often that I am afraid of being too categorical, but I have to be honest above all else and this is why I will say that I personally rate the possibility of a coup against Putin as exactly *zero*. I sure hope I am not wrong this time around…
Putin sick? Yes, maybe. With the flu. Or even pneumonia. Exhaustion is a terrible thing for the immune system. He might have had some minor surgery of some kind. I wouldn’t know. But dead? I doubt it. Of course, this is not impossible (it never is), but I see NO reason to suspect that this has happened.
Busy with the Ukrainian crisis? Yes, very possible. Kiev has just basically reneged on all of the Minsk 2 Agreement and Russia has to prepare for the worst.
How about “busy with the crisis AND sick with the flu”? That seems the best explanation to me.
I have no crystal ball, no special connection to the Kremlin, and no way to prove a negative. But at least so far, I see no evidence of something serious happening with Putin.
Let’s take a deep breath and wait. I believe that Putin is due to make an appearance on Monday. Let’s see if he does, and if he does not, how Peskov will explain it.

“A Bora-class air-cushioned ship, as well as Ivanovets-class cutters and [other auxiliary ships] have conducted marine battles using rockets and live-fire artillery against target positions imitating marine targets,” Capt. 1st Class Trukhachyov told journalists.
He said the crews of the warships would soon hold naval exercises using anti-air defense systems employing target exercises against decoy “enemy” bombers in the region.

My blind guess with Putin is that his temporary disappearance might have been a deliberate security move to thwart an attack or perhaps an imminent assassination plot.
It is quite possible that the almost instantaneous nature of high tech war means that there is much maneuvering going on to prepare to do things like attack satellite systems and command and control structures as a prelude to a nuclear first strike. Certainly enough tension has been built up and so perhaps Russian military got wind of a plot and decided to keep Putin hidden for a period.
So now Putin reappears and immediately announces combat readiness of 40K troops in the critical arctic region to counter a buildup of NATO in Northern Norway.
Norway is a vital piece of geography in the classic WW3 scenario. Cold War WW3 planning from the 1980’s knew this. Primarily, Russia needs to protect it’s naval forces in Murmansk. Including ballistic missile submarines. If Russia can defeat forces there it will be able to counter and threaten any US resupply of Europe and easily attack NATO forces on two fronts.
Of course, all the planning goes to shit in this scenario because it becomes highly likely that it ends up going full nuclear with lighting speed. The moment one side realizes it can’t win …it can’t lose…so a few tactical nukes leads quickly to full strategic launch.

Really Saker? Why would you even be wasting time on talking about a “coup” in Russia? If at all a coup was possible in Russia (I exclude the era when Yeltsin was president – but even that was not a coup per se), US would spare no effort to do that. There are certain countries where power of people is so strong you can’t have a coup – they may be democracy or not going by West definitions. US can just wish that.
There seems to be a lot of hysteria over a ten day absence. The western propaganda machine seems to want to hype this. All the same, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a U.S. assassination plot against Putin. It wouldn’t surprise me if the CIA has developed a way to induce a fatal illness like cancer without incriminating itself. Hugo Chavez believed the U.S. was responsible for his cancer.
I would grieve terribly at anything happening to Mr. Putin. He is beloved by so many people–even the birds and animals love him. What other leader could possibly say that? Or even come close. Life is strong, but it is also fragile. Russians and indeed the world, are not ready to let Putin go. I do believe he should take a rest and let Lavrov and Menendev handle it temporarily.
