Russia stages Victory Day military parade in Moscow’s Red Square to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the former Soviet Union’s victory in World War II, the Great Patriotic War, featuring 15,000 soldiers, more than 200 units of military equipment as well as 75 planes and helicopters.
The parade was impressive as always, although it was perhaps slightly shorter in duration than before. Unimportant. What was indicative were the foreign guests and foreign military contingents. Leaders from the former Soviet Republics were present, Ukraine and the Baltic republics excluded. We also saw military contingents from the former Soviet republics, Ukraine and the Baltic republics again excluded. What was also seen were military contingents from China, India and Serbia, which probably sends a political message from Moscow, bearing in mind President Aleksandar Vucic from the Republic of Serbia was present, as well as President Dodik from the Republic of Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Representatives from NATO and EU countries were not present, which is logical, bearing in mind the EU arrogantly accused both Germany and Russia for starting the Second World War, while Mike Pompeo did not even mention Russia during the D-Day celebrations.

The parade was spotless and beautiful as always albeit subdued due to the virusy thingy. The new cathedral is just amazing! Hats off to those who designed it and built it. Words cannot describe it. Both poignant and mesmerising. One feels the need to visit it at least once in their lifetime.

LOL Paul, yes, I was a little wicked there and had to reformat my words a few times to sound formal. In reality, over a coffee, I was in high hilarity while searching for a video of the Chinese contingent. I wanted to see how far they were marching from one another. But who knows, maybe they make friends (if nobody has sticks and stones in their pockets!).

I remember a bunch of Scot’s, in service of the Queen, they were forming to put down a peaceful protest march, but requested back up. Back up turned out to be several Sections of Welsh squaddies, also in the Queen’s employ…………..when the protestant Scot’s told the Welsh they were going to put the boots to some rable rousing Catholics, the Welsh soldiers were taken by surprise as they were all Catholic. Lots of boots flew that day, and it took two detachments of RUC and several truck loads of 1st Paras to break it up, I think the Welsh guys came out ahead, but something to watch Brit soldiers fighting each other…………in Ireland, of all places.

The joke doing the rounds in Russia prior to the Parade, was that the Indian and Chinese regiments would be separated by two Chechen Peacekeeping Regiments. In fact they were two regiments from the ‘Stans.

My mother-in-law pointed out a few Victory Parade Facts to me yesterday that I had not known nor thought about before.
Namely, that on Victory Day May 9, 1945 so much of the Red Army was far west of Russia, in Berlin… that a far grander Parade/Celebration was scheduled for June 24, 1945, a 6 week gap, to allow for their return to be honored in Moscow.
The other thing she was intent on pointing out was that a long row of captured flags from the Reich, with swastikas, on poles, were symbolically lowered to the pavement as the lead columns of the Red Army passed by, in scenes like this from June 24, 1945 film footage:

Some things not seen before:
1:27:50 down the barrel of the gun and into the tank. Incredible. All while the tank is moving across the square. Timed perfectly, edited live, what a great idea. Whether this is a micro-drone or some CGI effect matters not, it comes out of nowhere and hits the viewer in the face. Cinematic genius.
1:43:26 again, seemingly indestructible drone flies out from a jet engine. Interesting view to say the least.
The editing, rhythm, choreography (involving 14,000 + participants) is one of the most moving, epic and incredible public spectacles of any time, ever. Unreal/fantastic combo of ancient and modern.
Dig the emotions on the faces. VVP’s face included. All the old vets up there. You’d have to be made of stone not to be moved by it all.
Kudos also to the live editors, timing to the millisecond which shot to use, how beautifully done. (Russia’s been blessed with great editors and cameramen since forever)
I think that even if this was streamlined a bit from earlier parades, the tight choreography, upbeat mood and general vibe was better than the last two years.
Hollywood, all the spook agencies and NGO’s of the West, not to mention their TV Networks and armies and NATO combined, couldn’t produce anything so moving for a trillion dollars!
Can you imagine if they tried? There’d be identity politics battalions, the meth-head and pornography divisions. A tattooed asexual-identifying goofball in a tank would “give the finger”. Freedom, dude. Thinking of the West’s 2020 version of this makes a great parody parlor game.

Wonderful! I looked for the COVID related precautions that Russia also enforced during these past few months of 2020. I wonder what happened to the restrictions that had put most of the Russian people locked up in their homes in the name of the COVID disease? Or the contingent of India, whose government continues to employ the most draconian measures (including their police beating up people in open spaces for not wearing the mask properly). Sorry for the dash of crticial comments, but can’t help noticing the hypocrisy.
We were up at 03:00 on Parade day, 24 June. Nanny arrived to take care of the children morning of 23 June. Spent three days polishing brass and leather, VCO boiled my linen dress uniform to blinding white, fluffed and buffed her uniform. Our uniforms are new old stock original from 1943. Since I am senior officer, my dress uniform has brass buttons and shoulder board buttons and my shoulder boards are gilt with sparkling brass stars. The stars, it’s hard to see but they are not plain, they are quite ornate in a miniature way…and it takes 15 minutes to polish each one. My uniform buttons are not sewn on, they are held in place by an ingenious brass double ring clip. Our shoulder boards, the boards have a leather strap on the inside that goes through a loop at the end of the uniform shoulder, then through a short sleeve to the inside end where the buttons (hers are green painted since she is Sarjant) are held on with strong lace that goes through the button loop, then down through the shirt shoulder through two each side reinforced holes, then through a thin wood plate and tied off. Works grand. Let me tell you how much time it takes to maintain two pairs of 75 year old boots to mirror finish. We have spent most of the last three months getting all the vehicles up to snuff and ready for parade.
We left the digs at 04:45 for 35th Battery and from there convoyed to Ulitsiya Lenina, then down to the base of the feeder road from near train station. At roughly 08:30 Red Army began to drive up to Lenina, where we sat until Parade started at 10:00 sharp. Thousands and thousands of guests passed through us on their way down to the main viewing areas near Nakhimov Square and Ulitsiya Nakhimov, many of them stopping to talk and admire the machines and uniforms, and photo and be photoed.
Vid of machines and Red Army. All of the period armored vehicles are from the Diorama Museum on Sapun Mountain, overlooking both Balaklava and the Valley of the Shadow of Death from Light Brigade fame. Starting 3 years ago with the T34/85, the machines were pulled off the plinths where they had sat since 1955. For diesel powered units, it was found that purging of fuel lines, injectors and fuel tanks with new batteries and the beasts started and moved on their own. The petrol vehicles, including Katyushya, SU 76 and the truck pulling the anti aircraft machine gun and searchlight, did get an engine overhaul if needed, but most didn’t even need that, just a major tune up, fuel line purges and fire up they did. All work on all the vehicles was performed by Black Sea Fleet units. Red Army, we own all our vehicles, as in privately owned and we maintain those vehicles from our pockets, not a kopek comes from anyone for upkeep and repairs. Some are stored and on display at 35th Battery, some in a lager near Balaklava.
The Parade itself? Worth every aching hour of work, the cheers for Red Army are continuous and at times deafening. And, this year it was allowed to show us, as in me and VCO, in vids.

We do it to honor our veterans, although sadly every year they are fewer on the reviewing stands.
It was a great sadness for Baba Shura to leave us this year, 02.02.20, she was always in the lead M72 sidecar in the parades. She was partizan during the war, 14 years old when the war started. She was captured at 35th Battery serving in a mortar platoon, managed to escape in the death march to Simferopol and fought the entire war from the mountains and valleys. She has The Star, Hero of Soviet Union, and she was a grand old lady. She spoke fluent German so she and I could converse well, and frequently, she lived not two kilometers from our house. She was Tatar and got along well with VCO, too, VCO is half Tatar and all you have to do is look at her face and know that. Problem was the two of them would chatter away in Tatari, laughing and giggling, and after when I would ask what the old dear said, VCO would just grin and say Baba was being naughty. Figures. And they wonder why I drink.
For the city, the day the war started, and Sevastopol was the first Russian target to be bombed 22 June 1941 three hours before the Bryask Fortifications were hit, the population was 112,000. Sevastopol fought until 03 July 1942, tying down substantial units of Germans and Romanians, and was taken back on 09 May 1944. The population was 3,000 in June 1944. It is estimated that 155,000 soldiers and citizens died in defense of Sevastopol, over half of them killed at or in the area of 35th Battery where they, soldiers and civilians, retreated at the end. When they finally surrendered to the Romanians and Germans after being bombarded mercilessly for 2 weeks as they huddled in the open, the wounded were tossed off the cliffs of 35th Battery. It is my understanding that when Sevastopol was taken back on 09 May 1944, that favor was returned. If the Black Sea could speak, it would weep with sorrow….
And yeah, it’s the collies that bring so much attention. However, even without them we can hardly go anywhere without someone smiling and saying they saw us in the parades or events at Battery. If we take Sophia to Battery this year for events, she will wear her medals, too. She has more than one.

I think the most moving thing about the parade is the pride in not only the soldiers, sailor, Marines, armor troops and Red Army, but also the citizens watching the celebration. I saw not one single face that was not glowing with joy and happiness. Even the staff of control, soldiers, Militsiya, Rusgvardya, all were smiling and helpful. It is an honor for us to participate.
