The government’s trials of the S-500 Promitey have entered its final stage and will be completed this year. The system became an answer to the old American trick of leaving the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. And it may be possible to open over Russia one more actual anti-air umbrella of an almost strategic level. Details are in this episode.
They Tricked Themselves
In May 1974, the leadership of the USA and USSR signed a treaty on limiting the number of anti-missile defense systems. By it, each base was to have not more than two areas of anti-missile defense with a radius not more than 150 km. In each of them, it was allowed to deploy a maximum of 100 fixed launchers capable of intercepting ICBMs. Soon after, the number of the allowed areas shrank to only one. The Soviet Union chose to defend the capital and the central industrial region. And the leadership of the US decided to close the silos with ICBMs located in Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. But then later, the Americans decided to cheat. In December 2001, President George Bush stated the withdrawal of the US from the past treaty. He was confident that the American-made the multi-functional battle information system, Aegis, make the US invulnerable.
The system according to the design was supposed to shoot down everything. From enemy planes, to mid-range ballistic missiles. And due to the fact that its missiles were based mainly on ships, it could be brought closer to the Russian shores without extra coordination. Which afterwards started to happen systematically. And one time, an emboldened American anti-missile ship came into Sevastopol, which during the time was still Ukrainian. Military advisers to the American president convinced him that Russia is finished. And that it is so behind technologically where their counter-exit from the treaty wouldn’t become dangerous. But as the subsequent events have shown, the 43rd American president was cruelly mistaken.
New Level
Russian engineers not only brought out the strategic missile defense to the highest level, with the help of the A-253 Nudol rocket which we are talking about. There was a dash in development of tactical systems accomplished. Their job became the system S-500 Promitey. Which can be called “an answer to the American sneakiness.” The fact is that formally, the S-500 refers to the army system, which means it is not subject to any restrictions. On the factual possibility, it can be taken to the strategic level. The system has closed the gap between the strategic Nudol and the tactical S-400. Thanks to its mobility, it can quickly be focused to the most dangerous directions. And later, to change the position. With a few number of missile batteries, they could work at the same time, at suicide drones, strategic bombers, and the air command center which gives radio orders over the horizon, the same goes for the ballistic missiles, which the S-500 in one salvo can take down up to 10 of them at the same time.
In the near future, after the state-testing is complete, there will be a series production of the S-500, and its delivery to the troops will begin. It is possible that it will be not only be under the Air Defense Forces (PVO) of the army brigades, in the event of an aggravation of the international situation, a new brigade of a new actual strategic level will begin to form to cover the most important regions of the country, including Crimea. One way or another, the funeral guessing of Russia by American advisers turned out to be premature as always.
Pindo’s average attention span is know to be counted in (single digit) minutes – no wonder their “strategic” thinking doesn’t extend more than some months, maybe a few years, at best.
PS: a small typo: Nudol’s designation is A235…
I just fixed it, that was a typo by them which I translated as it sounded. Thank you.

Where do hyper-sonic missiles fit into the equations? To my knowledge there is no defense against them. As such these political strategists are only fooling themselves with their defense, and counter-defense systems. One just thinks of the not too long ago response by Iran upon U.S. military installations in Iraq. For all their defenses, which I am sure were well in place, U.S. forces could not do too much about the missiles coming at them. Iran was even so kind to give U.S. forces warning knowing full well there was nothing the U.S. forces could do.
I’m also sure the U.S. has similar missiles, but Iran knows enough not to do anything to invite them. I only wish U.S. forces could be so smart.
ICBMs are actually also hypersonic. But usually their warheads (which approach with several km/s) do not maneuver which increases chances of intercepting them. (I guess the chances of interception are still not very good with decoys and countermeasures and for a large scale attack it is hopeless). Avangard adds maneuvering to the equation.
Hypersonic weapons as such perform random maneuvers which makes it very hard to intercept them. They are also much harder to detect than ICMBs because they are much smaller and are probably optimised for low radar cross section.
Yes there is defense against hyper-sonic missiles now.
S-500 are officially only mobile operational anti-hypersonic missile air defense (up to 7km/sec. speed) on the planet.
That is their primary role. To shoot down all the missiles ( as specialized anti-missile system )
As you probably know, they are also used against other high value targets. Like low orbit satellite’s and all kinds of aircrafts (stealth aircrafts included).
They shoot down missiles on max 600km range and aircrafts on max 500km range.
@pesche
Russia has only maneuverable warheads on their MIRV-ICBMs (except on old Satan soon to be replaced by Sarmat)
All technology advances in the military have countermeasures which catch up quickly. There will be a 5 or 10 year window for hypersonic missiles until other nations develop similar systems to the S-500.
Meanwhile, back on the planet Earth, an all-out nuclear exchange between Russia and the USA would almost certainly cause nuclear winter…
“The nuclear winter scenario assumes that 100 or more city firestorms are ignited by nuclear explosions, and that the firestorms lift large amounts of sooty smoke into the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere by the movement offered by the pyrocumulonimbus clouds that form during a firestorm.” (Wikipedia)
Even if the S-500 could take out hundreds of US ICBMs, at least 100 would get though. Add to that the Russian ICBMs which would destroy US cities and there is no way the planet Earth could continue to support human life. “Larger-scale conflicts, like those feared during the cold war between the US and Russia, would potentially detonate thousands of nuclear weapons. These models predict that global temperatures would drop to an average of just above freezing year-round, lasting for around 10 years.” (Wikipedia)
On the bright side, nuclear winter would most certainly “fix” global warming.
It’s to preserve the second-strike capability to prevent the U.S. from keeping the illusion of nuclear primacy.
Every time someone on FOX news mentions that the Russians feel threatened by the U.S. ABM system, the response by the U.S. expert is … ‘our ABM systems will never be able to prevent a Russian first strike’ as if that answers the question. Apparently, everyone is expected to believe that the U.S. is so good and virtuous that we would never do anything so evil as attack Russia first and use our ABM systems to negate their diminished second-strike and then use that ability to threaten them. Not us, never.
The simple reality is, any all-out nuclear exchange between Russia and the USA will most likely be the end of humanity on the planet Earth. Both sides know that. The only political faction in the USA that actually WANTS this to happen are the Rapture-me-outta-here crowd. It’s in their crazy end-times eschatology that the world will end in a grand apocalyptic Götterdämmerung that will bring their warrior messiah back to Earth to smite the unbelievers, everyone but them apparently.
80% of them voted for Trump in the last election. They have become the heart and soul of the Republican Party. As one of them, Steve Pearce, chairman of the Repubs of New Mexico, said back in December, “Trump is our president FOREVER and no one can take that away from us.”
Nuclear Winter is greatly exaggerated. It depends heavily on all warheads detonating as ground bursts. Air bursts do not create the effect, and they more efficiently use the power of the bomb to destroy population and infrastructure. And even if all were ground bursts, all 2,000 deployable American nukes fired at once barely equals one major volcanic eruption.
S-500 began deploying Sept 16, 2021
https://vz.ru/news/2021/9/16/1119258.html
The promising S-500 Prometheus surface-to-air missile system (SAM) has begun to be delivered to Russian troops after state tests are completed, Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said on the sidelines of the Tyumen Oil and Gas Forum.
“State tests have just been completed and the first deliveries of this complex have begun. And this is not yet in the full range that Almaz-Antey should make at the request of the customer. These are such configurations of the specified composition of the complex, ” Borisov’s answer to the question about the S-500 system reports TASS.
He added that India could potentially purchase the S-500 surface-to-air missile system.
“Potentially, yes. But there are no agreements in practical plans yet. And this is a common practice: until we saturate our native armed forces, we do not sell abroad, ” Borisov said, answering the question whether India can become the first buyer of the S-500 air defense system.
Earlier, Alexander Mikheev, General Director of Rosoboronexport, said that Russia plans to introduce a promising S-500 Prometheus air defense system to the world arms market by 2030.
Mother has this interesting habit of making sure her forces are well armed and equipped with whatever new comes down the path before she even contemplates selling it abroad. Makes sense to me, take care of your own first.
Auslander
It certainly makes sense to saturate your own forces first but does it make sense to sell S500 to India? Wouldn’t it affect their strategic nuclear MAD with Pakistan and perhaps make India feel confident they could launch a first strike and shoot down incoming Pakistan missiles? Nuclear wars anywhere are a bad idea. I don’t see Modi as being as rational as Putin. Imran Khan seems to be doing a good job in difficult circumstances why undermine him? Hopefully the Russian leadership will be in no hurry to sell this game changing weapon abroad. If they do perhaps they should offer it to all SCO members?
Unless you’re a pakistani shill you’re full of conjecture and speculation. I say if you want peace in the Indian sub-continent it’s pertinent that Rus sell S-500 to India before anyone else. That’ll keep peace there.
India more confident? So what? USA more confident than Mexico? Come on man, comparing Pakistan to India is comparing Poland to Germany.
Looks like a BJP shill is definitely located….
Suggest you listen to Modi’s advisors rewinding a war agst Pakistan. Between believing in reincarnation and having a superiority complex…I would be more concerned by india. And don’t forget india is the US bitch in the region…ready to betray its SCO for h1 visas and free Netflix.
“I would be more concerned by india. And don’t forget india is the US bitch in the region…ready to betray its SCO for h1 visas and free Netflix.”
LOL.
Yes, India must be looking forward to the upcoming meeting of the Quad in the USA, where Modi can grovel before the Biden Regime and humbly ask why India was not included in the AUSUK Axis that America created.
India under Modi has become arrogant, racist than ever before and they seek a hegemony in South Asia as the US does globally. Selling S-500 to them would be a really bad idea because Pakistan has been acting rationally and are trying to deescalate tensions for some time now. They have even distanced themselves from the US. If Russia sells S-500 to india, it would make Pakistan realign with the US, an outcome that wouldn’t be healthy for Eurasian integration because Pakistan is a key player in the plans. Hope the Russia govt. act with more sense.
Pakistan acting rationally? Taking part in war games with Erdogan and Baku on Iran’s border sounds rational to you?
@Anonymous
I reckon they do. They openly denounced American military initiatives in the region and are working with China. Selling S-500 would no doubt make them look for alternatives
The Turkish military initiative together with Baku and Pakistan against Iran, is not an American military initiative?
I guess you are technically right. It is an Israeli initiative. And Pakistan is a part of it. So, they’ve swapped over from the US to Israel?
Are the US and Israel distinct?
Turkey is NATO. So, Pakistan is still in fact following US military initiatives, but now they have chosen to take part in Israeli military initiatives, against Iran.
My guess is, they are doing this as an insurance policy, in case the Afghans decide to take Pashtunistan, which Iran would certainly support, if it meant Pakistan, as a US-Zionist vassal, and a major base of terrorist operations against Iran, would be crippled.
Here’s to crippled state sponsors of terrorism!
I wonder why Russia spends billions of dollars developing state of the art weaponry and then transfers it to the West through intermediaries like India. India is now part of Asian NATO and anything shared with India is going to end up in American hands. Additionally, India at this time is an aggressive and warlike power with bad relations with all her neighbors. Any transfer of S300, S400, and S500 to that country would be certain to ignite war in Asia.
What if Russia sells export version of S-500 to both India and Pakistan? Then neither of them would launch first strike. Maybe that is the whole point of invincible defensive systems? If everybody has them, none can attack anyone else.
> Mother has this interesting habit of making sure her forces are well armed
And still need to pay for R&D and other costs. RDF prolly pays a cut rate. The money is in maintenance contracts abroad. So, yes, it has to be sold to reliable countries that can pay hard cash and will not bite them in the back.
Any units sold out of Russia/Russian Federation are the export version which is surely not the same version used in our defense network. This little fact is clearly laid out at the very beginning of negotiations and has apparently not been a problem to date.

Interesting the author makes no mention of ‘kabini’, the airborne electronic warfare disrupter employed against the Aegis system sported by the USS Donald Duck in 2016 (I think).
Basically it negated all efforts of the system to operate effectively thereby making the USS Donald Duck not only defenceless but also a sitting duck.
Apparently the crew were so disenchanted with their ‘foolproof’ system that they refused to continue and resigned, (deserted), and were put ashore.
I’m not too sure that the S500 is anything more than a technological showcase to freak out the spineless bastards in DC. What need of it if kibini is so effective?
Still, provides a few jobs for the proles I suppose. Must be very reassuring to have one of these in your backyard considering the blithering idiots in the White House these days!
general hytens recent remarks
“We never fought the Soviet Union,” he said. “As for the great powers, our goal is to never go to war with China and Russia.”
at the brookings inst. gives the game away as far as washington’s foreign policy moves that obstensibly seem aggressive towards russia and china but in reality are only made for the purpose of ensuring a steady flow of money to the mic and all the various hands out…. up and down that chain of money.
the usa has devolved in financial scams increasingly since the 1980’s when fiance capitalism took over control of the usa from industrial capitalism.
finance capitalism is all about extracting value from assets leaving behind husks. we see it in manufacturing, education, healthcare and the overall economy in general. finance capitalism is parasitical and incapable of regulating itself so like cancer it eventually consumes what sustains it without so much as a hint of the arriving death of the host.
usa foreign policy is now and for some time a captive of the demand to extract more and more value be it here in the usa or anywhere in the world where political control can be sufficiently exerted.
we saw this remora just sink its teeth into australia.
Thank you for putting that out on this discussion. As a veteran of the world of Washington I was able to watch that capitol of the Empire devolve from a somewhat corrupt system to an almost completely corrupt system in about three decades. The reason for that is the system evolved so that there was no accountability based on two simple rules: 1) no good deed goes unpunished; and, 2) cover your ass. Many iterations of these rules in addition to the overall moral imperative of “money talks and bullshit walks” means reform is impossible despite the efforts of some people within the system.
Battle-tested and deployed are two different things. So the question arises, is this for public consumption as a propaganda?
“is this for public consumption as a propaganda?”
Propaganda or mot, S-500 is powerful deterrent.
Would you try to punch a man with a gun, hoping that gun could missfire?

There has to be very large number of S-500 systems deployed to meaningfully protect Russia in nuclear exchange. Cost of such upgrade would be huge. MAD is still the best deterrent.
On other hand, used as weapon in conventional war, S-500 is real game changer against all available western threats.
Losing vasals could damage western economies at level similar to nuclear war. That is why we can expect huge demand for it in foreign countries. Couple of S500 could payoff Kerch bridge or even NS2. Who would not yield at such temptation?
Export can begin much sooner than 2030. At exorbitant prices.
Russians layer their missile defense weapons, not relying on one system only. So, there are S-300, S-350, S-400 and now S-500, with BUKs and Pantsirs.

Russia does not charge ‘exorbitant prices’ for her equipment, she charges a reasonable price and of course makes a profit, of this I have no doubt, but not being in with the actual kopek counters I can not give you a breakdown on costs and profits.
Ummm….who said anything about paying off the Kerch Bridge and Tavrida Highway? Russia does not borrow funds for such projects, these two very large projects, and many others, were paid for from Sovereign State Fund, you know, the same fund that pays for the huge monies Mother is spending on health care and pensioners. That would be the fund that SehSha can not in any way get her slimy hands on, another source of endless irritation to Foggy Bottom.

“…who said anything about paying off the Kerch Bridge and Tavrida Highway? Russia does not borrow funds for such projects… ”
I said it, not to imply that Russia is in need for money, or something.
Just the opposite. To illustrate magnitude of succes in developing system that negates possibility of Western campaign on any country defended with S500 and other systems.
Without fear of being bombed into stone age, or asassinated at whim, many vasals will rethink their alliances.
Therefore, there will be high demand for S500 and the rest of layered systems. Demand dictates prices. Simple as that.
Also, Russia have interest
geopoliticaly to stripe Empire of its major vasals. If it earns couple of billions in the procces, even better.
I see major comunication/reconnaissance hubs (like AWACS, high-speed spy-planes, low orbit intel-sattelites and drone-swarm carriers) as primary
targets of S500. Without these, western strategists will have very hard time to come up with any offensive plan. They became addicted on waging war remotely, and there is no detox for that drug.
I think n a all out war each long range air defense will be protected with a forest of shorad like the Tor, the Sosna-R, and son.
Remember that a normal composition of a regiment of Russian air defense is 6 TELARs.
So 6 sosna-R for example are 72 supersonic missiles. And 96 for Tor.
No chance for drone swarms here.
NS2 will be paid by Germany alone if nessesary. If you not remember how Germany was threatend to stop it and plain didn’t? NS2 is/was and will never essentail for Russia. But IS essential for Germany.
Pay close attetion what germany say and do in the next few Years. it has already started to wiggle free from the empire in wich shakles it has made themself comfy since ’45. For the Germans nothing will change, because, germany may nothing on the military stage but it is with UK and US the very core of the economical globalist elite, dominating the EU since the Euro and is the very Reason why UK has left the EU.
What nuclear exchange? Why does everyone’s minds go to nuclear exchange?
If anyone attacks Russia with nukes, Russia will certainly retaliate with nukes.
Nobody is going to attack Russia with nukes.
in awe of all this high speed gear, but listen up!
Please, fella russkies, hire a decent designer for ALL our uniforms. For ages we have the rudest, crudest, ugliest ill fitting clothing supplied to the military.
mans gotta feel good and look good.
just being honest.
The devil gives the US their plans but God directs the Russians.
Reagan wanted to build star wars missile defense, but the Democrats screaming, hissing, and wailing prevented it. One of the arguments was that it was not technologically possible. So it was scrapped. The Russian S-500 is equivalent in function to star wars.
