Can’t understand why Russians were hopeful anyway
over the last 25 years most of the political class would have first hand knowledge of the political establishment attitude and conduct towards Russian
Hope was very foolish – I’m not even Russian and I knew nothing would change
Nobody was ‘hopeful’ here, I mentioned before that there was some very very cautious optimism and that was it. What makes you think Russians were ‘hopeful’? Do you think the sanctions mean anything to TPTB? They don’t, they affect we ordinary workers and peasants to an extent but nothing we can’t deal with. Do we need US or European goods? Not hardly but as an aside I will tell you flat out that Mutti Merkel be damned if you want a new Benz or Opel or VW anywhere in Russia you just tell the salon what color and options you want and if you don’t have that exact machine by evening you will have it the next morning. German, Korean or Japanese machines of any kind? In stock and ready to roll. Polish apples or French wine or Austrian sausage? Thank you we grow our own apples, we brew better wine than you can get in EU or US and our sausage is better than anything you can buy in Austria.
DJT is a new President faced with the labors of Hercules. Do you think he can fix 30 and more years of insanity in less than two months when the entire US media, half of his own Republicans and 75% of the entrenched bureaucrats are against him and actively trying to stymie everything he does right down to his morning constitutional? Are you like a bunch of teenage brats who if you don’t get exactly what you want this instant you turn against President Trump?
Perhaps you don’t remember your alternative in the election, said alternative managing to lose against President Trump in spite of tens if not hundreds of thousands of dual, triple and dead votes in some of the most ardent Democrat districts in the country. Perhaps you don’t remember that the lady clearly said that if you didn’t vote for her you were ‘deplorable’. Well, I didn’t vote for her and I could not vote for President Trump simply because of where I live but I am proud to say I’m one of those Deplorables.
My advice to all of you is you had better get out and support your President and help him all you can. No one is going to help you unless you help yourselves and that help includes the only hope you have or will have for the rest of your lives, your new president, Donald J. Trump. Help him or lose him. Your choice.

I am not American – I am British and live in the UK.
You write defending poor Trump who has to Fight the establishment- that’s his problem
My view is why should Russians care about his problems ?
why not focus on their own objectives to defend their own country with the knowledge that nothing will change in America – their defence should depend on them not hoping for a miracle in the whitehouse – that is my point
James, I see your point but regard it as an impotent one.
It’s possible to walk and chew gum at the same time.
In other words Russia can and will tend to the business of its internal affairs, economic sovereignty, independent foreign policy, science and space policy, security needs and so forth. Putin we know, will walk the walk.
Meanwhile, a little chewing the gum of mutually beneficial cooperative possibilities need not hinder the walk, nor slow it down one iota, which seems to be your premise or “point”.
“Russia/USA exploring mutually beneficial possibilities??? Oh, bad, bad very bad! Must warn against this! After all the whole basis of British Empire Geopolitics is divide, divide, and divide again, especially Russia, the keystone nation of Eurasia, the greatest potential unifier of the “World Island, from America, which must return to the warm embrace of Anglo-Saxon Empire and be the brawn assisting the Commonwealth’s permanence and doing the bidding of British imperial “divide and conquer” brains! Or dear oh dear, what will become of not so “great” Britain if this geopolitical manipulation were to fail??? Oh no, we can’t have a warming of US/Russia relations! That just threatens our cozy universe of perpetual relevance via our non-stop stirring up intrigues and wars!
Be simple Russian and American dupes! Never try to walk and chew gum at the same time. Leave the complicated stuff to us! And by all means, never, ever get together and talk about how you might be more intelligent to ignore British geopolitics and try something less disastrous! Please, please, don’t ever even consider such rash ideas! They are “hopium”, you know!
Opium Wars? Absolutely first rate stuff.
“Hopium” of ever junking our geopolitical designs and mind control??? No, no, no! Not today! Not ever! Spit that gum out right now!
my point is I do not believe that there are anything mutually beneficial to Russia – Look where Russia is through seeking cooperation? They are backed up against the wall with troops on their borders
The philosophy of the USA is to dominate all countries- what does Russia gain from this?
The history of what had occurred since the fall of the ussr – shows that I am right on this
No, James, the headquarters of empire is London, “whose philosophy is to dominate all countries” including England and USA and Russia and all the rest.
You are too close to the center to see its brain near you. You just see its bulging biceps across the pond.
I see the Eastern Seaboard and Left Coast as corrupted by British Empire mind and money control, and far larger areas in red that can look west across the Pacific Basin to where the great majority of the human race resides and aspires to freedom from the old imperial rot that was Rome and Venice, which for logistical reasons was transferred to Britain and the Netherlands after 1492 rendered the world a transoceanic globe where a Roman or Venetian lake (The Mediterranean) could no longer serve as THE control center.
Now let the Atlantic sink into greater irrelevance (both Royal Institute of International Affairs and its colonial spin-off, the New York Council on Foreign Relations) and let Pacific ( as in Peace through Development, win-win win China- Russia- USA India) world emerge and take its rightful leadership role from the old imperial Atlantic rot.
I am amazed. Obama fooled a lot of people with his hope and change and ‘sort of’ against wars shtick. People believed him. As a socalled Community Organizer and Haavaad Law School (Boston accent spelled out). He at least had what looked like a resume for hope and change, though his rejecting his pastor who severely criticized the USA showed his true colors. For left wing wishful thinkers, he appeared credible.
Trump is a casino operator, which is to say, legalized theft of the hard earned money of fools thinking they can beat the House, when 95% of people lose. This is someone people believe in?
To put a point on it. Trump talked about less aggressive foreign policy and ‘let’s make a deal’ with Russia. What, like a Trump University kind of dealt that got him sued for fraud??
And in the very same speech, rather than dial back the military the way the USSR did when it voluntarily withdrew its troops from East Germany and Eastern Europe, and cut its military drastically, Trump poor mouthed the military and promised to increase funding.
How could anyone in their right mind not see his true intention? You don’t stop being aggressive and interfering in other countries with a promise to increase the already bloated military budget.
Speaking of NATO, he wanted people to ‘pay their fair share’ for what? To protect against the long abandoned Warsaw Pact? It is absurd. Why not say to NATO members, since you don’t want to pay and the USSR withdrew two decades ago, forget about it. Put your money into better education, building an economy independent of fossil fuels.
Did Trump say any of that? Of course not.
And yet you see both some Russians and Americans praying for Trump, like praying like a cargo cult that the ship of peace will come in under a billionaire opportunist, who never spent a day in his life working for the public good, rather building his Ego Monument Trump Tower.
The only way forward is to envision the world we want, and build a movement not dependent on any politician. Trump is not your friend. Sanders is not your friend. Nobody in either major party is your friend.
James, disagreeing with you is not an attack. You might want to read again my first post in which I clearly stated ‘there was some very very cautious optimism’. We are realists here, far more than most can understand. We are also patient, very much so, and I’ll qualify that ‘patience’ statement with unless we are under eminent attack like in ’14, at which point we react instantly.
Please read again ‘there was some very very cautious optimism’, each word, and understand the meaning of that statement and the implications.
Trump’s learning how to play the game. My own weird views on what’s been happening this week.
The first place there was always going to be increased US-Russian cooperation was going to be in Syria. Syria was always the logical and neccessary place for such cooperation to begin. And this week, we saw that it has indeed begun. We saw US troops working with Russian and Syrian forces to try to separate the turks and the kurds in Manbij. And we saw local meetings of US and Russian military commanders.
What makes me think that Trump is now learning how to play the game is that there were also ‘leaks’ from ‘unnammed sources’ that any deal with Russia is now on hold. Could that be a bit of mis-direction? While the first real steps towards a bit of cooperation are taking place on the ground in Syria, did the Trumpers know that the AP would always run with ‘leaks’ from ‘unnammed sources’ and thus use that get people looking away from those first real cooperative steps? I hope so.
A good cartoon. The situation in the US as I see it is very complicated. Probably half of Americans either respect, like, are neutral about,or even a few love Russia. All determined on their personal thinking. While the other half either, dislike, fear,or hate Russia. Determined by how deep the Cold War and today’s neo-con propaganda has seeped in to their thinking. The problem “is”,almost all the US leadership class fits into that second group. Those of them in the first group you could probably count on your fingers and toes. With maybe a few of those to spare. The main person in that first group “seems” to be Trump himself. While all his administration (so far as known) fits somewhere in the second group. And almost all his opponents are firmly in the second group. Both Democrats and Republicans. So,unless Trump can assert control over his administration. And enforce his (as we perceive it) thinking on Russian relations. Which may turn out to be a “forlorn hope”.But at least (as for as known),Trump couldn’t be worse for US-Russian relations than the “queen” of Russophobia Clinton would have been. So we are left with, what is said to “spring eternal”, Hope.
Uncle Bob – have you seen the documentary that Seve Bannon made in 2010 ? It answered alot of my questions about the personnel that Trump has chosen – Steve Bannon likes Bolton and he also likes Sara Palin –
I wonder if there is another side to Sara Palin that we didn’t see ?
Anyway – if you look into Steve Bannon’s philosophy – you can see what Trump is up against .
It reminds me of the Iranian sanctions and the effects it has had on their local high tech economy. It was a blessing in disguise. Tehran University is and has the largest published scientific research second only to the USA. The engineering technology and the their homegrown industries all benefited. Hence their economy has been more sheltered from the Pax-Americana /anglo-zionist oligarchs assault . Same effect will occur for the RF. The europeans shot themselves on the foot. Agricultural industry has been growing in the RF and replacements have been found elsewhere like Turkey and Iran . So Rothschild /Zionist /Pax Americana did themselves a disservice .
But we keep hearing Russia Russia ,Iran Iran . Israel is so democaratic and Muslims r barbarians.

Eric,
What an excellent post.
You have perfectly captured what I have been trying to say and I have ended up attacked for.
The fact that Russians after all the abuse and sanction still hope – says to me there is a serious inferiority complex there.
I just don’t get it – didn’t Yugoslavia teach them anything?
