We thought he was dead because there was good reason to suspect he was dead. When you just say that someone is ‘missing’ the implication is always there that they may just be on the run or laying low. Which wouldn’t get you on RT, or international attention.
He also didn’t get ‘famous somehow’, he was on Youtube for years, in the MGTOW and ‘internet bloodsports’ and free speech community. He was already quite well known before Russia’s military operation.

I found it very odd that he doesn’t speak Russian or Ukrainian despite living in Ukraine. That doesn’t make sense. Lira is obviously bilingual already so his natural instinct would be to figure out the local language ASAP upon arriving.
To learn a foreign language, with characters from the Cyrillic script, requires more than learning a computer language. If it cost $50.000 to learn nursing … it will be at that level. If Conzalo Lira had $50.000 in debt already his debt would be doubled.
Oh I disagree. Once you learn your first foreign language, the rest are far easier. Pretty soon it’s just a drill: Every language is basically 200-300 words. Make your own dictionary in a coffee shop over the first week in a country and pretty soon you are rolling.
Lira is a verbal dude and very curious and very smart. I think it would drive him crazy to live somewhere and not speak the language.
Granted Russian is a LITTLE harder than western languages, but really not that much harder. It’s actually kind of fun to figure out the Cyrilic. I spent two years working casually on Russian and enjoyed it quite a bit. Though it was about my 4th language at that point so I knew the drill.

Rubbish. After five years of age the language learning part of the brain shrinks remarkably fast. Only a small % of adults can absorb new languages easily; you seem to be in that cohort, but do not make the mistake learning a language is easy or possible for all.

Well, I think that is rubbish. Newest research shows that the brain is actually very plastic and its capacity to learn has not really been plumbed.
Unfortunately this kind of rubbish is accepted by English speakers as a great excuse because they are the least willing of all language groups to make the effort to learn other languages, and, indeed, to learn “the drill” of learning a foreign language. It’s too bad that foreign languages are so little respected in the USA and the UK, but the idea that the language forming part of the brain shrivels is utter bunk. What does fall off is memory—ability to memorize. Also, some people have a much better ear than others for mimicking the sounds and rhythms of the target language.
I have prepped for a couple of vacations by learning the rudiments of the language—Spanish, Italian, and French, Dutch, Danish. Using Pimsleur tapes and a CD with basic phrases. Motivation is indispensable!
Lira had ten years to learn Ukrainian or Russian and was in an ideal situation (family/partner/kids) to do so if he had been motivated.

Thank God !! I HAD given up hope . . . that’ll teach me.

Do not forget the story of Nestor Shufrych. He was picked up by SBU and then released, he recorded a video saying he was fine and everything was ok. Then he just disappeared without a trace, never to be heard from again. Most likely he didn’t survive the second SBU visit.
Don’t let the same thing happen to Gonzalo! SBU likes to play these games of “catch and release” so they can then say they had nothing to do with the persob’s death because they let him go. They will just let the individual fade from the forefront of the public eye because “he’s fine and safe, but I’m not gonna bother watching him because he isn’t allowed to post anymore”, and then when the media attention quiets down, they can come back to kill their target.
Always keep following Gonzalo and don’t let him be forgotten! At this point a forgotten Gonzalo is a dead Gonzalo.
We must also hope that the siege of Kharkov happens soon, because I’m sure the SBU can also think of other ways to kill him without tracing the act back to themselves. He’s in an extremely precarious situation no matter what right now.

Being an activist who stands up to the Empire of Lies is risky. There’s almost 150 murders of human rights and environmental activists in just those five nations that are all closely a part of the Empire of Lies.
I wish Mr. Lira well, and I’m glad he is safe. But, keep a mind open for all of the others who die, disappear or are tortured for standing up the Empire of Lies. This reminded me a movie called “Missing”. Directed by Costa Garvas in 1982. A American father – Jack Lemmon- is looking for his son who gone missing in Chilli under Pinochet dictatorship. Finally He finds out his son has been captured and murderred by regime guys. Gonzalo is a Chillian. Just a strange coincidance after 40 years nothing has changed, just names.
It’s a great relief to see Gonzalo alive and well (if shaken). With some luck, he will be able to leave Kharkov and go to somewhere safer.
Other bloggers were not so fortunate as Gonzalo. They were treated to a hail of bullets or worse. The Ukronazis have him essentially on a short leash and all of his communications are now compromised. I pray his family is as far away from the scene of the action as can be.

My take on why Lira was spared is beacaue the 1st he being a US citizen and 2nd the nazis wanted to show to the world that they are good and they don’t kill journalist. I found the Duran episode with Lira to be disconcerting. Here we have a man who disappears for a week and once he pops up he says he can’t say much about why he was detained but that he’s supposedly stuck where he’s at and can’t leave. He then proceeds to make comments that you would imagine were the very reasons the lunatic Ukrainians would have picked him up in the first place! Seriously? What the hell, Lira? Shouldnt you shut your trap at least for your family’s sake? There’s something seriously wrong here with this whole scenario. I dont believe the SBU would give a damn about making him disappear without so much as one crocodile tear. What’s one less noisy Chilean-American when you’ve already murdered countless of your own? Its simply bizarre.
All useful points to consider. Fog of war, propaganda and the like we must contend with. Personally, something does feel off about him now that I have thought about it long enough. I’m going to move on and I wish him well, either way. It’s too perplexing anymore.
