Press TV reports: A Russian warship, patrolling the busy Gulf of Aden, captured 10 pirates in three small ships off the coast of Somalia, the Russian navy says. The nuclear-powered heavy cruiser Peter the Great said on Friday that a helicopter from the ship spotted the pirates in two speed boats, with automatic rifles and grenade launchers, on Thursday, closing in on an Iranian fishing trawler. The speed boats turned around and headed back to a bigger pirate boat which the Russian warship then intercepted, the Russian navy statement said Friday.
Russian navy spokesman Igor Dygalo said that Peter the Great detained 10 pirates and confiscated weapons, narcotics and cash. “The fate of the detainees will be determined in cooperation with Russia’s foreign and justice ministries”, he said. A spate of hijackings by Somali pirates has brought foreign ships rushing to protect one of the world’s busiest sea lanes, linking Europe and Asia, and the number of successful attacks has shown signs of dropping in recent weeks.
A multinational task force of about 20 warships, now patrol the Gulf of Aden, an unavoidable transit point for the 50 ships a day that use the Suez Canal. Somali pirates have targeted merchant ships sailing through the busy Gulf of Aden, and have earned tens of millions of dollars in ransom last year. The international presence appears to be having an effect, though, and the International Maritime Bureau’s website lists only three attacks in January but none so far in February, a far lower rate than late last year.
U.S. forces yesterday captured nine suspected pirates in the Gulf of Aden, its second seizure of pirates off the Somali coast in 24 hours.

Commentary: This is a rather amusing case of total overkill. The Russian ship involved in the seizure of the pirates is the heavy nuclear missile carrying battlecruiser Peter the Great, the most heavily armed ship on the planet, designed at the height of the Cold War as a killer of US carrier groups. Now, after a visit to Venezuela, the Peter the Great is chasing Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden alongside many other military ships, including American ones. Still, I can just about imagine the utter amazement of the (stoned) Somali Pirates when they were approached by his huge monster in the middle of the night! I don’t want to make fun of the Russians here, doing this kind of things is good training for the Russian Navy anyway, and its very smart politics – showing a *BIG* flag. But overkill is still is.
Has anybody wondered why to subdue a bunch of racketeers and to defend only ONE maritime route, the WHOLE WORLD HAD TO GET TOGETHER, and to do that they have sent nuclear powered cruiser with nuclear capable cruise missiles on board?!!!!!!!!!
Isn’t the world screwed up to the point of insanity?
Don’t blame Russians for that. The other warships are also capable and stand for gigantic overkill against the flimsy pirate boats.
There is more to this. The US Navy looked the other way when the oil tankers were being hi-jacked. Claimed it was “too hard” to do anything about these small ships, or something akin to that. It struck me as very peculiar. Noam Chomsky (and leftists like him) will have us believe that US corporations and their business interests dictate American foreign policy. Yet, here is a clear cut case of a direct attack on commercial shipping and they do nothing. Absolutely nothing. Why? Who knows? Maybe, these pirates are political allies and we don’t want to interfere with their livelihood? I really don’t know, but it is too hard to believe that a couple modern war ships with all their surveillance capabilities wouldn’t be able to put a stop to this crap immediately.
So, did the Russians go after these pirates to make a statement. To show the commercial world that they are willing to enforce international laws? That they are the ones who seek global stability? Or was it to gather intelligence?

@Anonynous#2: it was a Russian style happy valentine’s day to pirates.
If you look at the majority of ships that have been taken by the pirates, it wasn’t something the US should immediately be concerned about. What the heck does Chomsky’s ideas have to do with US not going after a bunch of pirates?! If anything US means business by calculating the return on investment carefully. ~Anonewyorkmous
I disagree with your assertion that the scale has been insignificant. The tankers and ships have been huge. What would it have cost any business for their nation’s navy to chase after these thugs? nothing! If “business interests” or industrial interests–and not the Jew finance/criminal class devoted to Israel–was in control in the US, you can bet they would have had the Navy kill these f@#$-rs.
Rather, the USN pointedly looked the other way. They patrol that area diligently. They could have stopped it, but they didn’t. Why? I really don’t know but I speculate that they have been instructed not to interfere.
With regard to Chomsky, I hold him as the epitome of the Jew-dominated left that bashes “American” (not Israeli) imperialism. Iraq is about “oil.” Yeah, right! Israel is just a pawn. Uh-huh. Here is a case when American business interests are attacked directly and we get…nothing….or pretty close to nothing.
It would seem to me that it is a counterexample of the arguments used to blame the industrial-military complex for our Middle East wars.

I must add there is such thing as Maritime Law and all participating countries are trying to adhere to its tenets. It is very important to behave according to the law once on high seas. You know why everybody can one day find himself in distress.
To put it short, vastness of the Earth’s seas demands other laws than those we live under on the lands.
For example:
1) to kill ’em? No way! It’d be barbaric, cruel, and unhuman.
2) to arrest ’em? Then what? Send them back to their ports’ authorities? Or judge them in the country which captured them? What about the cost? Or effectivnees of such measures?
3) You may not arrest anybody only because you think or suspect he is going to make something evil!
The so called pirates can carry personal weapons but the mere fact does not constitute a crime!
Etc, etc,… Regards
@Anonymous1: I have to confess that I did not follow this Somali piracy business too closely – frankly, I have only 24/day and other priorities. But I vaguely remember that there is some kind of UN resolution on this. Then, there is the Law of the Sea which, I think, allow for enforcement of anti-piracy provisions.
If you look at the Russian footage I provided, the Russians are VERY careful to establish the proof that the guys arrested where pirates and not just stoned teenagers having fun at night on the high seas. The make an inventory of the seized weapons (Russian intel also spotted other weapons were dumped overboard), the found radios, GPSs, etc. They interrogate them too. They also point out that these guys had one bigger and slower “mother ship” and several fast attack craft – not exatly what fishermen would use. Lastly, the Russians say that Russian justice department officials will decide on their future, and not just the military folks. So they are trying to do this one nicely, by the book.
I would also notice that the Peter the Great is under way to the Indian Ocean where it will participate in large scale naval manoevers with India and that the Russians already have other ships tasked with anti-pirate security in the region including the frigate Neustrashimyi (with Marines and even Naval Spetsnaz operators on board) and the
destroyer Admiral Vinogradov (scheduled to replace the Neustrashimyi). So the presence of the Peter the Great is rather incidental and not part of some Russian plan. Still, I find it amusing to have this megamonster going after pirates but then, while in Venezuela, the Peter the Great also participated in some search and rescue training with the Venezuelan navy, yet another rather ridiciluous use for such a huge and powerful battlecruiser.
On another topic, I think that the nuisance presented by the Somali pirates is real, not only because of the seized cargo, vessels and personnel, but because of increasing costs of insuring ships, because of the terrible precedent this sets, and because it is just not a good idea to allow a buntch of stoned thugs to mess around with the safety with a major maritime route. As far as I know, there are 20+ nations with military ships policiing this region right now, including the USA, India and even Japan, if I remember correctly.
My 2cts.
The Saker
A few month ago Somali government /whoever it was at that time/ had sent an Ambassador Extraordinary to Russia who gave the Russians unrestricted power to deal with the local pirates including the power to chase them on the sea, on Somalia land, capture and interrogate. The Russians also have the power to take all captured pirates to Russia prosecute them and imprison if found guilty.
But most likely the Russians will just give the pirates a warm handshake and their share for an excellent job done dealing with Ukrainian ship Faina.
It is very important to behave according to the law once on high seas. You know why everybody can one day find himself in distress.
Tell that to the Zionist pirates who observe no international law off the coast of Gaza.
