Dear friends,
In the past we were lucky enough to a generous sponsor who paid for the costs of our servers in Iceland. This person has now retired from his job and cannot continue to support us. We are trying trying to find a new sponsor willing to donate the funds needed for our servers. Our servers are hosted by the company Advania (https://advania.com/) and the costs are as follows: 786 Euros every six months exactly. That is 873 Dollars at today’s rate. That means 1746 US dollars a year.
Since this is an absolutely crucial aspect of our operations (5 our of 6 of our Saker Blogs run on these servers) we are hoping that a sponsor (one person or one group of people) will be found who will agree to cover theses cots.
If you can help us or if you know somebody who can, please email me.
Please do NOT send any money at this point.
So far our community has made many “miracles” happen and I hope that this will be the case again this time. I will keep you all posted, of course.
Many thanks and kind regards,
The Saker
Hey
I do infrastructure engineering for a large company and might be able to help you. Not necessarily with hosting but possibly in locating inefficiencies in your architecture that could help bring server costs down. Maybe you have done this already and feel there is no room there. But it never hurts to have another pair of eyes on it. Some simple things like the web server software, reverse proxies and caching can do a lot to reduce costs. If you want to talk you have my email. I would be happy to at least talk about what you have and possibly make suggestions. Saw your post on ZH and I like your site.
On john kerry and the genesis of the syrian escalation. never read this before:

Hi Saker,
You might remember me. I’m a retired business owner who is now living on a small disability pension. The largest account in my business was providing food services to a mid sized (20,000 students) college. I neither took or paid bribes but way to keep my costs low = my volume high was to talk to my suppliers. I would offer them exclusives to provide their product to my clientelle for a cost dicount. I also pointed out that my account with them was an advertizing account (in your case maybe a small banner passively promoting Advania on all five sites, if they agree?)
Is anyone else willing to switch to Advania to share in a bigger discount?
My son runs an ISP, and could certainly host your servers, probably at significantly less cost. However, because of the highly political nature of your content, in what may well be a worsening world political environment, your service is almost certainly safer remaining based in what is largely a politically independent Iceland.
I am aware of other politically contentious websites, where strenuous efforts have been made to suppress or eliminate content, by both legal threats and professional technical attacks. In at least one of these cases, the owner of the website, found the best solution was to move his service to Iceland.
Any ISP has such an enormous volume of content and customers in multiple different languages, that it is literally impossible to have any knowledge or control of what is communicated, except when there is a very real attack. In the vast majority of cases such attacks are literally criminal, and service providers work with intelligence services and police authorities to maintain the service provided, and also identify the source of the crime.

As a side comment, I would not be overly reliant on Iceland’s political independence. Its declared policy is one thing, its “deep state”‘s actual policy is another thing. (If a nation of 250,000 can be said to have a deep state). Iceland is heavily dependent on the NATO countries.
