Note: It is my pleasure today to submit to your attention a “Serbia and Balkans” SITREP which will be regularly written for the Saker Blog by Marija. Since this is a first run, please make sure to share your comments, suggestions and criticisms with us. I believe that a Serbia-centered SITREP is warranted because while the current regime in power is rather uninspiring, the Serbian nation has not exhausted her “resistance potential”. And now that Russia is on the rise, the EU in shambles and the US/NATO overstretched dealing with multiple simultaneous crises, the artificially “frozen” situation in the Balkans is about to become fluid again, and Serbia will be at the center of it all. In a way, keeping an eye on Serbia is like tracking US carrier groups: there might not be much happening right now, but when something happens, we know for sure that they will be at the center of it.
I am very grateful to Marija for her report and I hope many more will follow.

SITEREP FROM SERBIA
In recent days Serbia is faced with the biggest wave of refugees from Syria. A drastic increase in migrants to Europe could be interpreted as an attempt by the US to weaken in this way an influence of Europe, introducing the EU in the “permanent state of emergency.”
Where is the government of Serbia in this serious migrant crisis, which threatens to destabilize Serbia and the issue of security of citizens, as well as in terms of economic, demographic and political situation? Unfortunately, the Serbian government is hiding information about the number of migrants, their origins, their intentions, whether they more or less organized manner helps to continue their journey, as Greece or Macedonia attempt to do, or has made a secret agreement with the EU that this huge number of migrants stop for longer in Serbia.
Who directs migrants to Serbia? In which way they enter Serbia without documents? What is the plan of the government for this long-term migrant problem? These are all questions that this government does not want to answer.
As much as Western Europe is the “staunch ally”, the United States are aware that the EU is its biggest economic rival. In such a situation it was necessary to discredit and over migrant crisis keeps EU under control. US and its strategy of intervention has produced a wave of refugees and that Europe backfired the alliance with the US actions in the Middle East. In this geo-strategic game Serbia is just a collateral damage.
Serbia is in the unenviable position not only because of pressure from Europe, but also because of the intentions of the United States to keep under control all the countries that have good relations with Russia. This strategy is nothing new and dates back to 1999 when the Congress decided not to allow Serbia to be a significant political factor in the Balkans. Nothing to nowadays has changed.
Conciliatory tones of Serbian and Albanian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic and Edi Rama in Vienna last week ensued after a series of disputes and due to the pressures of the West and the new policy of the US and Germany to the era of conflict to get into the phase of brotherhood and unity.
Serbian government is now in the euphoria because the praise coming from all sides. They do not get the compliments and pat on the back because they work for the good of Serbia, but it is in the interest of those on whose behalf they do. In Serbia everything is for sale and placed under the control of the IMF. If the country continues to sell its enterprises and natural resources, what is left to the authorities to govern and how they manage to preserve the independence and sovereignty of the country.
The Moscow daily Kommersant said that Brussels’ decision to begin negotiations with Serbia on joining the EU by the end of the year, marks the return of the EU policy of active integration of the Balkans into its ranks. Among the key reasons for the return of the EU’s interests for the Balkans indicates the growing increase of Russian influence in the region. This hypothesis is confirmed by the “fight for Serbia, which has lately been activated between Russia and the West as well as conflicts between them in the other Balkan countries.”
While Kosovo is applying for admission to UNESCO and the demand is supported by 44 members of UNESCO, therefore the evidence of the “Yellow House” and suspicions of organ trafficking and what happened to the Serbs kidnapped in Kosovo in 1999 and the achievements of the future of the Court the KLA crimes, in this regard is still questionable.
In the first stage the story is not published because it is considered to have sufficient evidence, but an enormous loss to this case is that the evidence, gathered in 2004 in the Yellow House and sent to The Hague, had been destroyed. American correspondent in the former Yugoslavia, Michael Montgomery, pointed out that the establishment of the truth will be difficult not only because of lack of evidence, but also because it’s been a long time.
But let us wait and see what the Pope has to say to President Nikolic and what will be the “useful” guidelines to offer after visit to the Vatican.
“Who directs migrants to Serbia?”
Macedonia is the one directing the flows of invaders to Serbia. Meanwhile Hungary is starting to more and more protect its borders, so Serbia might end up being stuck with them.
I’ve read they are stripping orchards and tramping farmers fields in the border towns with Hungary. The people in those towns are scared. They feel, come winter, the migrants will move into abandoned homes and burn furniture for warmth, and then turn to cutting down the trees in the orchard for warmth and the people will be left without their livelihood.
Serbia is doing nothing to secure its border with Macedonia and seems almost pleased to allow them to flow through. It also provides the migrants services such as health checks and care, registration documents, etc.
Meanwhile many of the people look down on Serbia, Hungary, Macedonia as too poor. They leave trails of trash wherever they go and stay.
It also turns out that the Syrian migrant who was tripped by the Hungarian woman reporter is a terrorist supporter – supports al-Nusra and other terrorist groups on his facebook page. This was uncovered by patriotic Syrians themselves.
Also, if Marija reads this, I’d like to know how the rebuilding of homes for last year’s flood victims is going.
Serbian carrier is going to spend the next round in the dry dock…and it’s about time.
The hull is rusty, equipment is outdated and the crew is depleted and tired. Right now, it would only be a burden to Russia. If the cards are played right, a time will come when the old girl sails again.
Ukraine is trying to sell its ex russian missile carrier ship, maybe Serbia has ambitions…….

Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic, is just another puppet from the Serbian governments.
He was probably talking to the local sheeple. Trying to convince them, that Serbia is independent country.
Which of course, has nothing to do with horrid reality.

I don’t know if this sitrep was written in English or translated into English from Serbian, but in either case it could use more thorough editing, mainly for grammar and sentence structure. I know it takes a lot of effort and practice to write clearly in a non-native language. However in order to make this easily accessible to as wide an audience as possible, more fluid writing style would be really helpful. I just want to stress that I really appreciate the effort that goes into writing these sitreps.

With the exception of the refugees-centered objections mentioned above, her SitRep is really good and interesting. Also I can confirm what she wrote about the Serbian ruling class versus opinion of average citizens from my own visits to Serbia (most recently in July).

Mainly she just needs to use shorter sentences, as she has some overlong sentences/run-ons.
That is an easy fix. She should just go over what she’s written and divide the long sentences.
I don’t think perfect grammar is necessary if you get the point.
I find she rights clear, but just needs to shorten her sentences.

Before this, I would like to share my own impressions from a walk through Belgrade several weeks ago: there are also lot of migrants from Africa, Afganistan and even Pakistan. Majority of them are young man between 20 and 35.
Estimations about number of migrants crossing daily Serbian borders are from 2000 to 4000 people per day . In some days up to 7000 migrants were arriving daily to Belgrade.

About 83.000 migrants have been issued a document stating that they are asylum seekers , app. 500 of them decided to stay in Serbia. However, the total number of migrants is much higher (estmated number 500.000), since most of these people have not been registered. Even the registered ones are not all from Syria.

According to several sources, Hungary and other EU countries will turn over 150.000 migrants who have entered Hungary without being previously registered in Serbia to Serbia. Hungary declared Serbia tob e a „safe country“ and will base the return of migrants on this.

According to other sources, Germany will return to Serbia the migrants that previously have used Serbia as a transit country . These migrants will not be transfered to Macedonia or Greece since UNCHR denied the „safe country“ status to these countries.

sure, Serbs have a share of responsibility for the illegal overthrow of the legal government back in 2000. However, you are very wrong when you think that millions of them participated in the color revolution, it was not more than 50.000 max. It was the first country hit by this technology, so it is understandable that it was difficult to prevent it, especially in consideration of the fact that prior to it, Serbia was exposed to 15 years of devastating sanctions and 78 days of bombing (including also 10.000 tons of depleted uranium bombs), and millions of Serbs from Kraina, Dalmatia, Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo have been exposed to genocide. Only on 5th of August 1995 300.000 Serbs have been cleansed from Krajina (today Croatia). Since the illegal government overthrow, all the major media and institutions (including also military and the police) have been controlled by foreigners. They are meanwhile deeply infiltrated in all the government structures. This makes the change from 2000 onwards so difficult.

But in the days of the overthrow, people who weren’t Otpor or general protesters, did come out and gather for the spectacle and the total number was said to be one million.
These people did help with the overthrow by their presence and numbers. They prevented the government and police from operating correctly.
Also, I don’t understand why Serbs who did NOT participate in the overthrow are not blaming and giving a hard time to all those who did.
I notice many of the protesters and people who blocked the streets and transportation were UNIVERSITY STUDENTS. And I noticed that they were often directed by their PROFESSORS who, instead of holding classes, would use their students for the protests. These professors were in contact with people in the U.S. who were directing them and giving them ideas.
It seems Serbs with connections to the west – students, professors – are often used as a 5th columnist against their country. That is why people should be suspicious of many of these student exchange programs. It seems those who’ve been in the U.S. as students/professors will be very susceptible to doing U.S. State Department bidding against their own country.

I honestly doubt that at any point of time the number of people gathered for the spectacle was one million. Those who did NOT participate are indeed blaming those who did (and also some of those who participated are blaming themselves), but too late. Because in politics time is an important factor. As I wrote before, the foreigners (not just local quislings) are meanwhile in effective control of media, politics, military, economy etc. They also count the votes when there is charade known as elections.
The infatuation of intelligentsia with the West / EU was indeed a regime change driver and I believe Martin explained quite well why. I cannot blame Serbs for this, since even much bigger and better off nations, such as Germans, act the same, – they lived so long with USA hegemony and simply cannot imagine that USA will loose this time. They too may have lost the chance to get rid of this hegemony, and build partnership to Russia they might have had back in 2013, when Russia was far more benevolent towards Europe and especially Germany than it is now. Again, time matters. Germany is full of people who are intelligent and capable in what they do, they have lovely country and houses, culture and tradition, and yet these seemingly intelligent people tell you they are buying a house in Florida and want their families to spend holidays or are moving there in order to enjoy American way of life.
Tiny Serbian nation has at least fought against NATO, this cannot be said of any other other nation in Europe. Russia, we are told, could not help, was back than infatuated with the West itself. Serbia lost this war and is under occupation, both directly and indirectly through the quisling government. I do not doubt that majority of Serbs would vote for joining the Eurasian Union led by Russia, but USA and EU, including also Germany will never allow this (meanwhile even the government sources confirm that the support for EU dropped to 40% – which probably means 25%). Realistically, only a direct military intervention by Russia and Russian military bases would help (I am waiting for this to happen for about 200 years). Saker wrote that Russian military capability to intervene successfully is only 1000 km outside of Russia and indeed Russia will have to come to Odessa before coming to Serbia (but not sure they would even want).
One more remark for Martin: socialism in Germany may not have been a Zionist project, I don´t know, you know better, but Jugoslavia, especially the socialist one, was 100% anti-Serbian and anti-Ortodox project. Alles Gute, Sloboda

In 2000 there was no Colored revolution. It was just a quick overtake of all governmental and institutions of power and security. Think of them as ‘little green men’.
No one of civilians wondering streets during that SINGLE afternoon did not overthrow anyone.
People on the streets were not stupid, they were sickened by other Milosevic bad actions. Nonetheless, it had nothing to do with ousting him

Further update : Today, Hungary has closed also the train connection between Serbia and Hungary, so now the migrants can use only official border crossings. There, if they ask for asylum they will be returned to Serbia, based on Serbia being the safe country. The new law will be applied from now on: For damaging of the fence there is home prison punishment for citizens of Hungary and prison punishment for foreigners. The process will be done without translation help, no documents such as passport are needed.

As a Serb I can only say: bravo Hungary, this is how the country is defended.

Beg to differ. EU, save Germany, has very little to show for it while also being a complete bootlicker vis-à-vis US imperialism. China would be a more realistic candidate here. Now, with regard to the migrant/refugee torrents, I believe that the Eurocrats are quite happy about their presence out of crass class interests. With such an influx of destitute people, whatever remains of the proverbial “social contract” between Labour and Capital can finally be scrapped for good. The Western labour aristocracy can vote for whatever racist, chauvinist filth it pleases; it won’t help a bit.
Serbia’s government, provided it has any self-respect whatsoever, should capitalise on the mayhem telling the Serbian people what wondrous joys are being brought about by the EU — at home and abroad (Greece, Syria, Ukraine etc.) — and align itself 100% with Russia and China. That would even allow Serbia to make very good use of the foreign victims of Western Regime Change terrorism.

We are surrounded by the EU. Why is this particular border getting so much attention?
Because Hungary is Schengen, the others are not.
Yes, sure.
But from my own crossing of these borders exactly in this triangle Serbia/Romania/Hungary several times (most recently in June/July) I can say, that it matters little if Romania is not in Schengen and Hungary is.
Of course, until now the old route was the easiest one, but nevertheless certain other new paths won’t be capable of stopping the flood(s).
Because here you can see that even the border from Serbia to Hungary looked like this until 2 months ago (while these pics were taken a year earlier, by a fellow railway enthusiast) :

CroatiaHungary is also still better, because Croatia joined the EU only on July 1st 2013, is not in Schengen and still had usual border controls until 2013 (now only for customs, sometimes no controls at all, but all the infrastructure is there available).

But RomaniaHungary has a soft border for more than 10 years now, and a very long one.
So it will be hard to seal it off.
BosniaCroatia is sealed better thanks to the large wide deep river SAVA.

However: The border CroatiaHungary has no river. And although it was a controlled border until June 30th 2013, it has no fence and no river. Same for SerbiaCroatia. Thats why I think this route is the second most vulnerable one, while the route over Romania is the most vulnerable route. Especially since Romania is now almost equally as “rich” on the surface as Hungary, and during recent years the border regime went softer and softer. Plus: Romania is damn large and borders other dangerous potential migration (and weapons smuggeling!) paths: Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine and the Black Sea and Dunave rivers plus Black Sea Delta.
I’m not sure how they want to protect all this without their old-style Securitate. In Romania you nowadays almost never see a police car on the streets, except for those who sit somewhere in a restaurant and enjoy life.

Well the reports are that the migrants busted through the Croatian police lines after being impatient about waiting for the buses in the hot sun.
Photos show the migrants running down the roads, but they are headed towards the west (Zagreb), I think. They are aiming for Slovenia, but Slovenia has said something about not allowing the trains with migrants to pass.
Also, in regards to Romania, I am surprised that the migrants aren’t using that country at all. But Romania did recently sent 1,000 police to the border with Serbia.
And as for Romania have a veneer of being wealthier, then how do you explain some travel bloggers saying that Serbia looked more prosperous than Romania (at least where they went)?:

Because Hungary erected a wall and the Serbian-Hungarian border was where the largest flow of Middle East and Asian migrants are coming from.
Serbia was foolish not to enact border controls and ask Macedonia and Greece to stop allowing them into the country and funneling them to the next.
Serbia was doing the same as Greece and Macedonia – funneling them north on the way to their destination, only Hungary was angry enough to do something about it.
What did Serbia expect when Hungary announced the fence, then started building it, then nearly completed it, then brought in its police, army, dogs, etc., then finally seals the last gap?
Now Serbia is stuck with them unless they find another route.
But there are already reports of Romanians sending 1,000 soldiers to man the Serbian-Romanian border to block the migrants.
Don’t know about Croatia, but haven’t heard of migrants getting in there – at least in significant numbers – yet.

Serbia risks being caught between the rock and the hard place. With Hungary and Croatia closing their borders, the country will be overrun by desperate, angry and possibly violent migrants. The EU recently called Croatia not to open a corridor for the migrants, instead hinting that they should be accommodated in the first country they enter EU soil. This is a very nefarious policy from Brussels by which it puts even more pressure on Serbia, and Hungary.
What is especially harmful for Serbia is that the country is ran by Washington sponsored regime, put to power by the ambassadors to work for their interests. The Neo-liberal dogma has taken complete control over the political elite (there is no political party in the Serbian parliament opposing the EU), the opposition is non-existent and reduced to small, petty parties, most of which are marred by scandals and corruption affairs from the time they were in power. The media is also under complete control by the regime and pro-Western interest.
The West also has wide range of means to exact pressure on Serbia if its political elite becomes uncooperative, the most dangerous of which is, of course, Kosovo. Not less harmful is the fifth column which has taken hold over the country, and is present in the form of various NGO’s and lobbyist organizations sponsored from Western corporations and financial capital.
Regarding the immigrant crisis, Serbian regime will never dare to impose border controls. PM Vucic even actively promoting pro-migrant propaganda on the media under his control, ranting about EU values along the way. It is possible that Serbia will succumb to pressure from Germany and Brussels to built several large centers to accommodate migrants, as Germany has increasing troubles coping with the crisis.
At the risk of being pessimistic, things do not look well for Serbia. Its public is silenced, there is no plurality of opinion in the political discourse and the regime has completely sold itself and its country to Western financial and corporate interest.

Abdication was arranged with Milosevic in Dayton. Only thing that went wrong for Milosevis was his wife. She refused to step down from power. As a result, from Student protest of 1996 onward Milosevic was in conflict with his employers.
Yes, thank you for your response. It often catches my attention that the people who rightly oppose the West, fall into the trap of idealizing the likes of Milosevic, who at times, enjoyed Western (US) support and was called a stability factor in the region, especially after Dayton accords. His fall from power was imminent, he seized being useful for those around him, and the West was happy to push him out of the way.
Things haven’t looked well for Serbia for decades now.
It is perpetually in a bad position.
Also, Greece is the first Schengen country the migrants entered so that is the one they can be legally sent back too.
The Serbian army, police and people don’t seem to be that concerned or alarmed by this: if they were they would be doing something than this great passivity.
The Serbian public is more hooked on reality and singing competition shows.
As for the migrants being trapped in Serbia, well I read that Norway donated $7.3 million for Serbia and Macedonia to accommodate the migrants for the winter, so it looks like Norway believes they will be stuck there.
However, it is noted that most of these migrants have money – they are all well fed, many have good name brand clothes and shoes, they have ipods, etc.
They have connection to their bank accounts and money and they have been paying hundreds for taxi rides, and gave thousands to traffic smugglers.
It seems to me they can go and/orpay their way back and that they would rather go back to where they were living (in Turkey, Cyprus, or their home countries) than live stranded in Serbia where they don’t have large benefits, and the high standard of living that they desire in western Europe.
I noticed in interviews that many were university students and they are hoping to continue their studies in a German or Swedish university. So some are using this trek to attempt to get a free education.

They were soooo happy hearing their sweet little Tsipras assuring them that they may both have their cake and eat it — “EU without austerity”. So the Greeks got precisely all these beautiful ‘European values’ the EU had in store for them. In this respect, Greece is similar to Banderastan with ever worsening chaos and outright Nazis, but with Russophobia totally absent.
So why aren’t the European countries gathering up the “refugee”s” that aren’t from the countries in war,and shipping them back to their countries.As the Syrian volunteer said, you can tell if someone is really Syrian by their accent.There should be enough real Syrians in the EU that could do that for the EU officials.I had some Algerian friends that told me the same thing.They could tell the Arabic speakers from outside the Magreb by their accents.If the Europeans want to stop the influx (and at the same time allow genuine refugee’s to come in) stop whining about the influx and get to work sorting the real from the fake.
