There is a lot of speculation about the future of the planet, after the present crisis. This is a natural reaction. The vision of the world has become insecure and one would like to reach solid ground again. However, in order to stay sober, it is necessary to look at the real changes which take place. I shall speak of Switzerland (where I was born and where I live). I would be very interested in articles speaking of the concrete situation in other countries around the globe.
According to the „rankings“ of the Johns Hopkins University (USA), Switzerland is on the 9th place, concerning the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19. Compared with the total population, Switzerland is one of the most affected countries in the world, if not downright „on top“. Does this create panic in Switzerland? No. Does this increase mistrust in the government? No. Does this mean that China, Russia, or Iran are becoming more popular? No. Is the Swiss economic system (which is a Western capitalist system) collapsing? Not at all. Is there more frightening and uncertainty? Definitely yes. Is the trust in the USA and the US-system affected in Switzerland? Yes. Is the European Union becoming more unpopular in Switzerland? Yes.
These are just some examples in order to underline that we should keep a cool head. Wishful thinking is not appropriate. Before turning to the changes, let me emphasize my conviction that the Swiss political system is one of the winners of this crisis. It is an inclusive political system which tends to integrate different forces. One has the habit not only of defending the proper point of view, but also of listening to the others, (mostly) without insults. Here is an example. Based on existing law (the Epidemics Act), the government has restricted some federalist rights of the cantons. With respect to Covid-19, three cantons decided to introduce sharper constraints than the government. This was considered as illegal. Two cantons retreated while the third one, Ticino, (which has by far the closest direct relations with Italy and is the most affected – by the coronavirus – canton in Switzerland) decided to keep the particular constraints. The government quietly introduced a new extraordinary rule, legalizing so – afterwards – the behavior of Ticino. This „case“ did not create any political turmoil.
Social Distancing and Families
This a a very sharp change. Direct private contact is reduced to a minimum. Children and students must learn at home. Consequently, the families get a much bigger place. This is an enormous challenge for the families.
While Switzerland has – reasonably – not decided a strict confinement (walks, jogging, and so on remain legal, but not in groups). The transports have very significantly decreased, flights, trains, buses, cars. Traditional travels and holidays on Easter (April 12) will fall to a minimum.
The Spending Politics
Politically speaking, this is by far the biggest change. For many years, austerity politics were in vogue. This has been abandoned with almost no opposition. There is a huge financial effort for the safeguard of jobs, for the guarantee of wages (also for temporary workers), for saving small business. The discussion of the question who will pay for these efforts, has not yet really started.
New Political „Stars“
This is a favorite subject of mine. It applies to every big crisis, not just to the present one. One can observe that different qualities for political leaders are „requested“. Bluffers, careerists, elitists, and bureaucrats are not adapted for managing a crisis. On the other hand, qualities like integrity, authenticity, and common sense are in the foreground. The Swiss interior minister Alain Berset is a very good example; he is really gifted for the present situation and is very convincing. The same is true for Germany’s Merkel. On the other hand, Macron in France has difficulties – not surprising. In my eyes, Biden is even worse than Trump; I perceive Biden as a typical careerist while Trump has at least some authenticity.
Economical Problems
The economical measures of the government do not apply to everybody and this creates problems very fast. For example, self-employers who – legally – have the right to continue working, but do not get contracts, are not supported. So-called undeclared workers – for example many cleaning women – have difficulties. The question that the children have to be occupied and looked after at home is not yet clearly regulated. More problems will appear.
More Political Unity
There is less protests than usual. Different opinions of ourse exist, but there are pronounced less aggressively. While the police has the right of imposing fines – for example if more than 5 persons are together in public – this seems not really necessary. People are quite disciplined.
Moreover, each political party can see positive points. The social democrats have more social intervention of the government, the greens appreciate less air pollution, the liberals enjoy that personal responsibility is reinforced, and the nationalistic right is strengthened in the conviction that foreign countries may be a treat.
One also observes more solidarity. It is not true that people are becoming more egoistic in this crisis. As far as I can see, people usually think more of others than of themselves. Nurses, cashiers, bus drivers are particularly appreciated.
Conclusion
While this is really a big crisis, the problems in Switzerland are – until now – almost luxury problems when one compares with the usual situation in many countries. Nevertheless, immense changes happen and there are more to come.
Personally, I also have some kind of luxury problems. Usually, I do mathematics almost every day (since 5 years, I try to write a book). But since the outbreak of this crisis, I am not able to concentrate on maths. Obviously, my general vision of the world is too disturbed and I cannot make abstraction of the „real“ world. I wonder whether this is not a general problem for pupils and students.
Nice article. I have a question regarding the Swiss way of life, based on an article in Politika a Serbian woman married in Switzerland wrote. Is it true that the Swiss plan, months ahead, their time with their friends?
And if yes how do you react when you, e.g, schedule going out with your friend on some particular date, three months from today, and that day comes and either one of you is sick or can’t make it to the meeting/concert/movie?
“… Is it true that the Swiss plan, months ahead, their time with their friends?
Yes, it is. Not just in Switserland, it is so in most of, (if not all), Northern Europa. It certainly is in The Netherlands, where I live.
… how do you react when … can’t make it to the meeting/concert/movie? “
You just inform him / her on time that you would not be able to make it.

The Swiss way of life ? Yes, the Swiss have their way of life, just like every country in Europe has it’s way of life. However, this article is pointless. It should never have been written. What has permanently changed in Switzerland ? Answer: Nothing. Yes, some temporary changes have been introduced, which will disappear once the corona virus disappears.
Switzerland is unique. It’s a confederacy of three ethnic groups, German, French and Italian, who have agreed to live in one geographic entity only because this entity provides them with political neutrality vis a vis the rest of Europe. However, when it comes to finances and economics, the opposite is the truth. Huge gains are made, especially through Switzerland’s banking establishment. The result is that in both world wars Switzerland was left untouched, because all warring sides used it’s banks. It can be compared to Sweden, which was also ‘neutral’ in both world wars, yet in both world wars provided Germany with iron ore, the chief raw material in a war economy. The Allies left Sweden alone, just like they left Switzerland alone. Interesting.
Switzerland provided banking services to everybody: Nazis and those persecuted by Nazis. The banking secrecy law was introduced in 1934 to protect those fleeing Nazi persecution. They were neutral.
They were definitely more neutral back then than they are today! Now they are handing all their banking info to the US (today’s Nazis), joining them in sanctions and recognising fake countries…
I wonder why the EU has become unpopular in Switzerland? Is it due to the Corona crisis or some other issue? The Swiss Germans have always been skeptical but the “Suisses romands” always loved the EU…
Thanks for this write-up Paul. Switzerland has one of the best political systems in the world. It’s interesting to how federal and cantonal powers are being applied in this crisis.
Thank you, Serbian girl! It is true that the “Suisses romands” liked quite a bit the EU, but this was some 18 years ago. In the meantime, this “love” has caught a cold. Among other things, Brussels does not like the popular votes in Switzerland, and here, the fun is over. The skepticism was already strong before the Corona crisis, and is now intensifying.
This is just one person’s POV. And misleading at that because we don’t get necessary information about the person’s status (car owner, job …)
For instance, if one was using public transport to move around, a halt of public transport introduces big changes into one’s life. Etc…
Anyway, just one person’s POV that doesn’t equate with the bigger picture. Useless.
I would suggest that this opinion from one person, i.e., RATM is useless .. One person’s POV – misleading and pretending to know the bigger picture. RATM, Useless.
Thank you Paul for your update. Much appreciated. Your world seems to be a bit quieter than the rest of the world in these days. Be thankful!
Thank you for sharing your experiences Paul. I am better for knowing. I am curious as to what kind of maths your book about. Thank you
There is no panic in Switzerland, because the whole thing is unreal. Every TV channel is promoting “the end of the world”, however, the very same personalities, that are telling us that we all going to die if we don’t obey social distancing, telling a completely different story in professional publications such as “The New England Journal of Medicine”. Here it is, Anthony S. Fauci, (yes the president’s COVID 19 adviser) : the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.2
https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2002387
And yet, the same dude was professing a total health catastrophe on every TV channel, the very same day.
And here something even more interesting, check out empty hospitals that were portrayed as totally overloaded by the media:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFWvgf4EmLU
BTW, the other reason there is no panic in Switzerland, is because most of Swiss are practicing social distancing for the last 500 years.
“most of Swiss are practicing social distancing for the last 500 years…”– ha, ha , … very funny. I myself see little difference, as my self-chosen life-style is fairly close to the current situation (minus the good coffee cafe down the road in the small ‘fishing’ village outer suburb where i reside).
However, in regard to your broader point about “There is no panic in Switzerland, because the whole thing is unreal. Every TV channel is promoting…” — I recommend a listen to the first 5-minutes (well all of really) where the speaker gives an interesting historical insight into the genesis of the name “Spanish Flu” which actually (like this current mutation I suspect) emerged first in the USA — Kansas specifically.
In 1918, Spain was one of the few countries not directly involved in the mass butchery called now the First World War (WW1). And as such, was not under strict post-war (Armistice, Nov 1918) government control of information and media. Thus, the only reported news was of the influenza virus decimating the countries came from ‘free’ Spain media and radio. Elsewhere it was no better or even worse but no reporting allowed. Hence, it became known as the Spanish Flu etc.
It seems to me we now have the reverse situation with Switzerland (and a few more) playing the free worldview role. Instead of silence, the strict post-C19 government control of information and media is working overtime to keep the masses in confused disarray and locked-down cheaply ($) in home-detention.
The fog-of-war outcome is much the same in relation to state-elite positioning for the Great Depression 2.0 that is now a “9/11” level event as a culmination of 10-years post-GFC (global financial crisis 2007+).

Regarding Fauci…appears he has, as they say, skin in the game ! A Dr Rashid A Buttar has very recently produced 4 youtube pieces titled Coronvirus Conspiracy. In No:3 he makes some quite startling allegations against Fauci, supported by an article in the scientific journal Nature. As I understood it, Buttar states that in 2014 the US Govt issued a moratorium banning research into developing Viruses with gain of function capabilities. However, somehow, Fauci as head of the NIH funded research at North Carolina University to produce Coronaviruses with these added capabilities. Buttar also alleges Fauci was in some way involved in the transmission of the HIV Virus amongst the Gay community disguised as some kind of free inoculation. Whichever…Buttar’s videos are worth a watch. He obviously feels strongly about Gauci, reckoning he should be tried for crimes against humanity. Apologies, but unable to provide the link. Kind regards.
Pyewacket, respects.
But, if you are unable to support what you are saying here, how are we to take this seriously? I have no skin in this game whatsoever and do not know the personalities, but let the comments here at least be thoroughly researched and supported.
Amarynth, although I’ve not provided a link to the piece, I have stated where it can be found on Youtube. If that isn’t acceptable, I apologise.
Its not you alone my friend. But generally let’s quote our sources. (I am on a tear and on a cleanup this morning on the blog – nothing personal – just the daily work at The Saker Blog – we’re dealing with too much unsubstantiated info).
As well as that we’re unfortunately dealing with the fact that much of substantiated info is not or barely looked up/read/researched by many if not most readers/visitors here.
But here are all the Youtube’d Dr Rashid A Buttar videos together: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Dr+Rashid+A+Buttar
@ amarynth
This is a very difficult proposition because we have to make a case against criminals by limiting ourselves to the sources provided by the criminals. This is a 99% closed loop. The #1 purpose of the mainstream media is to cover up the tracks of those who commit crimes on a planetary scale. Often their “cover up stories” are so ludicrous that even non critically minded public can get awakening moments; such as the “magic bullet” that killed JFK theory, or the buildings constructed from a super durable steel, disintegrating into dust, and neatly folding into its own footprint, etc, etc… all caused by a bunch of cavemen.
These are the same people, spinning the same level of lies to create a new system of financial and ideological control, in which sneezing can land you in prison.
The moratorium (rather a pause of funding) was on gain-of-function research (i.e. making virus strains more virulent) and was put into place from October 2014 until December 2017. It was lifted specifically to “identify, understand, and develop strategies and effective countermeasures against rapidly evolving pathogens [corona-viruses] that pose a threat to public health.” [1]
In 2015 scientists at UNC (University North Carolina) succesfully bioengineered the viral genome of Chinese bat coronavirus spike protein genes – rendering it very contagious. It received its funding just before the ban (2014) was implemented. [2]
At least two scientists from the 2015-UNC-study are attached to the lab in Wuhan. [3]

If that last clip of the UK “White Helmets” is authentic then something is very suspicious indeed.
Sometimes clerical error occurs and bureaucratic incompetence wins the day, but sometimes …
’empty hospitals that were portrayed as totally overloaded by the media’
of course it’s all fake
look at the eyes of the allegedly NYC doctors @ CNN, even behind masks one can recognize Chinese eyes/eyebrows
if they built a fake Libyan square just for propaganda purposes, they will fake anything
or the rows of Italian dead in coffins, just lined up in normal temp rooms ….so sanitary…… LOL
worst are people who got duped and them to admit they were wrong, now they are on a ‘ tear and cleanup’ crusade to enforce group think. talk about egos and narcissists. pathetic.
The governments have decreed that you will believe the official narrative and behave accordingly or risk being arrested and fined. No doubt you will be publicly shamed as a warning to the rest of the sheep.
More or less same in The Netherlands.
“let me emphasize my conviction that the Swiss political system is one of the winners of this crisis”
Really? Every Swiss politician eagerly repeats the Mafia propaganda coming in via Rothschild-Reuters word for word. Like all Spanish, Thai, Senegalese, Nepalese, Argentinian, Dutch politicians do. Utterly tragic.
If I would be a Chinese I would have been:
1. Alerted at what the hell is going on in July 2019 regarding CDC closing of Fort Detrick
2. Alerted at the strange “vape-induced” deaths in USA just after that closing
3. Managed to find as much information as possible regarding that strange deaths and found out that smoking electronic cigarettes has nothing to do with pneumonia and that some other “particles” are inducing those deaths
4. Prepare for the similar situation in China so everything is up-and-running, when this virus finally hit Wuhan (that’s something about 5 months of foreknowledge and preparation)
5. Made the greatest lockdown in human history for exactly two purposes: first making sure that this induced virus doesn’t spread around China, and secondly to prepare the template which disillusioned West will follow in their own disillusioned countries (you know, if Chinese are doing this it must be something nefarious, so let’s do it in our country too, just to be on the safe side)
6. Parallel to that make some good Chinese PR regarding helping Italy first, than Spain, etc. and re-make EU’s minds that we are not such an “animals” as Trump is repeating every single morning/evening as a sort of a mosque prayer. The lack of NATO/USA medical help to Italy and others would make our PR-event even better
7. Take advantage of some good opportunities to finally start building that “bloody” Chinese One Belt One Road initiative in front of American’s “bloody” nose.
8. West won’t find out what the hell is going on because they will be fully occupied with their “financial games” as usual.
But I am not a Chinese and I am certainly not as clever as Chinese political and military masterminds. So, this story has much deeper and cleverer roots. But nevertheless I would bet on China this time around.

“Covid-19: The game is over?!
(mardi 24 mars 2020 18h05)
By Jean-Dominique Michel, MSc in Medical Anthropology, Geneva, Switzerland.
Kindly and expertly translated by Mrs. Helen Arnold.
I have said it before, and I will say it again: the same political or journalistic treatment applied to any episode of seasonal flu would terrify us just as much as the current epidemic. Just as the staging (with real-time counts of victims) of any major health problem, be it cardiovascular disease, cancer, or the effects of air pollution, would make us shudder with fright just as much, if not infinitely more!
We now know that Covid-19 is benign in the absence of pre-existing pathology. The most recent data from Italy confirm that 99% of the deceased suffered from one to three chronic pathologies (hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc.) with victims ageing 79.5 years on the average (median 80.5) and very few losses below the age of 65.”

I think you missed the point.
The problem is 20% of infected people will required hospital care.
The virus itself everybody knows is not that bad but our resources are limited.
It is up to you whether you like or not my article. However, you should respect the subject. The article does not treat medical questions, nor questions like „who is the best virologist“, nor the origin of the new coronavirus.
You may discuss these questions elsewhere, but, please, do not abuse my article for this. Thank you very much.
Excellent site with lots of well-sourced information and new daily updates at the bottom of the page.
A Swiss Doctor on Covid-19
https://swprs.org/a-swiss-doctor-on-covid-19/
This looks more and more like a big psyop.
Speaks someone who get’s most information out from the MSM media outlets which serve a clean uncritical view of the governments doings. Most of the billions of money given away is on the risk of the state and state controlled banks and everyone does not get more than simple credits or not.
So speaks someone who js blind for all the neoliberal misconceptions brought against the swiss population just as in any other country. The outright plundering and stealing via legalised privatisations and simple closures of many once publicily owned services and goods.
Here as well as in many other conservative neoliberal states most of the workforce is forced to keep working on its own risk. It js thr workers, families and housholds bearing the risk of it all. There is not one single word that the ones who control and own most of the wealth are held responsible according to the economic power they hold.
It is the investors and owners who are asking to keep on working no matter what.
It is the voice of someone who has no regard for the many hundreds of thousands of housholds who do not have enough money for the high cost of living. No regard for those 20% of the housholds here in this rich country who need government money to pay the bills on a regular basis.
I do understand that here speaks and writes someone from the right wing conservative party. The main voice in tandem with the liberals since the 70′ when the first neoliberal propaganda could be heard in this country. Someone who speaks arrogantly about “luxury problems” because he has no emphathy, no understanding, no concept of others around him. For those who do not agree with what the neoliberal government has done to this country and its people.
It js a voice of someone who spoke in favor of a weak state and therefore more closures of hospitals. For ever lower taxes for the rich and fees and indirect taxes for the rest. The government looks as if it would speak with one voice but it is the same persons who favored privatisations and liberalisations especially for the finance business and investors.
In Switzerland it is about 100 Bill. or 1’000’000’000’000.- Sfr. of inheritances finding new owners every year and mostly freed of any social responsibility i.e. taxes. In Germany this amounts to about 320 Bill. every year and it looks similar in many other nations. Tax exemptions for the richest of the rich… this is what i see happens inspite Corona.
Why is that? Because the same people who have been responsible in the past with their majorities and their control of the MSM are responsible now to find solutions.
One or two who comment always, in every comment seem to find someone or something to disparage. They are beyond cynical. It isn’t helpful. I wish where I lived people were as measured in their response to this current crisis as they appear to be in Switzerland. But no, in rural central Ontario people are showing signs of constant stress, nearing hysteria. Some won’t give eye contact, give a friendly greeting or answer is something is said to them. There has been a general call for cottagers to please consider staying away. Well, it is their property and some are even in the process of moving here permanently while others spend as much or more of their time at the cottage than in the big city. But, they will now be vilified by the terrorized public if they come to their cottage. Madness is setting in here. Comparing this virus to other cases, as one writer said, we should have been under quarantine for the past twenty years! Why now then do they want us locked in our homes, isolated from everyone? Something else, something big is in the works and by all accounts, I don’t think we are going to like it. For one thing, the Federal Reserve is buying up the planet. Everything is absolutely tanking, yet the stock market keeps getting a bit of a bounce before plunging again. There are repeated references of this virus with a war we are fighting. Come to mention it, I’ve not heard a peep about any of the empire’s adventures. Could it be they are in full preparation for a big war? They wouldn’t want an aware public out on the streets if this is what they are doing. Meanwhile, this play actor, fake PM of Canada, in the midst of this massive manufactured crisis is going to bump carbon taxes up, raising the price of everything. Prices have already risen a lot since this solitary confinement began. It is going to become desperate for some. I’m not eating meat because this is Great Lent, but I did happen to notice tiny chickens usually going for $7-12 are now all about $20 and rising. I suggest while making deliberate efforts to remain calm that we also try to prepare ourselves for what is coming at us because these are days that will try men’s souls.
I am a citizen of Switzerland where I was born and grew up, however I live in Vietnam now.
I have regular contacts with my familiy and friends in Switzerland, and I also follow Swiss (and German) media. It is for sure interesting for me to get the POV from Paul Schmutz Schaller in the context of the Saker blog.
Allow me to add a few points which I guess do not contradict the notes of P.S.S.
I expect that Swiss economy will be hit quite hard due to the lockdown in Switzerlad and other countries – as this is the case for many other countries; rather not the finance sector, but many others. Tourism is a good examples, lots of “small business” in many different spheres. It is a fairy tale to assume every Swiss person is rich per se. In the “average familiy” often both parents must have a job to be able to pay the very high “daily costs”, rents, health insurance, etc., especially hard it will be for “single mother families”. (But yes, other countries such as Germany probably will be hit even more.)
When it comes to support by government for damage on business due to Corona … we have to see what will happen. The discussion has started. Big business has a very strong lobby in Bern, and the “Social Democratic Party of Switzerland” has to prove whether they still want / can fight for the issues of “normal people”.
2008 some of the big banks have been declared as too big to fail and were rescued by the gov. with tax money.
Assuming the threat / danger of covid-19 as claimed from officials like WHO is correct, the executive of the Swiss government was reacting too late wasting weeks as mostly all other European countries. Tho their statements seem to be more constant (when e.g. compared to Germany).
Statistics regarding Corona cases given by the “Bundesamt für Gesundheit” BAG (Federal office of Public Health) are at least partially deceptive. So far it is only alternative media critizing it; corprate media follow the BAG stats.
See:
– https://www.infosperber.ch/Artikel/Gesundheit/Es-geht-weiter-mit-irrefuhrenden-Grafiken
The way the stats are presented, they exaggerate generally the danger, espcecially when it comes to the increase of infected people and deaths due to covid-19. People now start wondering how long it takes to flaten the curve of increaisng cases, which is said to be necessary to terminate the lockdown.
Very similar – afaik even worth – are stats from offical site in Germany mainly from the Robert Koch Institut.
@Little dragon.
Agree with you. There is still no masks, no hand sanitisers nowhere (in Switzerland) to be found since last February. People here are quite angry for slow-motion actions from the federal/cantonal authorities.
————–
Google-translate by Mod:-
e confirms the words of “guest”.
The authorities have modeled their attitude on that of the member states of the European Union, denying that the free movement of humans leads to the free movement of Covid19!
Adopting just-in-time sanitary management during a pandemic is criminal, as globalized supply chains fail in cascades (shortages of sanitary items).
Berset is a good communicator, but talking is not enough: the damage from carelessness is there.
Switzerland followed the globalization imposed by the Anglo-Saxons (Reagan-Thatcher), then observed a certain follow-up from the EU although it was not officially part of it.
Swiss officials will be put on the spot in accounting time, given the blatant shortcomings in corona management.
