On September 28, ISIS assault groups, supported by battle tanks and technicals armed with heavy guns, attacked government forces in few points at the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor highway, the key government supply line to Deir Ezzor city.
ISIS attacks took place at Ash-Shula, Bir-Ghabaghib and Sukhnah as well as at other points along the highway. Using the surprise effect, ISIS entered Ash-Shula and Bir-Ghabaghib cutting off the highway.
The ISIS-linked news agency Amaq claimed that in total 100 Syrian Arab Army (SAA) soldiers were killed. Amaq added that ISIS members killed a Russian soldier and captured 2 others. These claims were rejected by the Russian Defense Ministry.
ISIS had been able to concentrate enough forces for this move thanks to the ongoing Arab-Kurdish tensions in Iraq that resulted in halting of Iraqi anti-ISIS operations near the border with Syria. On September 25, the Iraqi Kurdistan Region Government held an independence referendum in the area controlled by its forces, including multiple areas that have never formally been a part of the Kurdish autonomy. This led to a large-scale political crisis in Iraq and a diplomatic crisis in the region that could led to a new round of the war in Iraq.
By September 29, the SAA and its allies re-grouped and started a counter-attack in an attempt to regain points that they had lost at the highway. A fighting continued in Ash-Shula and Bir-Ghabaghib. Even when government troops restore the control over the highway, they will not be able to recover the time that they had lost combating ISIS in the area.
Meanwhile, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) officially announced that it has seized al-Suwar town northwest of Deir Ezzor and started another operation in order to reach and to capture Markada town in southern Hasakah.
The SDF is actively exploiting the fact that ISIS is mainly focused on combating government forces in central Syria.
Will the SAA allow the SDF/US to control the areas they are taking control of?
Once Russian airforce is set up in Dez, SDF can do little militarily to prevent the eventual reclaiming of the oil fields.
That is the reason for this frantic push for Kurdish referendums. First in Iraq with Syria following right behind.. i don’t think it will work. I think Iraq will be fighting kurd turds before SAA will be. And if that happens kurds are doomed. Rightfully so in my opinion.
Sooner or later the SAA and their allies will have to confront those SDF Quislings.
Can anyone please tell me how is it possible for large number of USISIS troops to gather with heavy weapons, including tanks, repeatedly for major offensives in the desert terrain without being spotted? Wouldn’t such gatherings be easy pickings for massive aerial attacks?
I know, having the benefit of some army training, that you can move in scattered formation to the assembly points at squad, section or platoon level, but ultimately you have to concentrate these forces at the target. I also know that there are bright military brains in the field of action and at HQ(Russian and Syrian) and that explains my confusion at this apparent paradox.
I agree….I also have some basic military exercising in a landscape full of mountains, forests and lakes and can’t understand how an open desert terrain could offer enough shelter, cover and possibillity to hide for batallions of heavy armed forces with tanks and artillery. And this with no airforce or heavy antiairforce artillery or missiles giving them protection from the sky!
Need to be for the SAA and the russians problems with lack of or disabillity of military intelligence!
Thanks Anders. Sometimes one needs someone else’s opinion to confirm that one is neither a genius nor a crackpot!
There are many mysteries hidden behind the fog of war and an observer may summarise that this particular one in Syria holds many secrets and complex wheeler-dealer arrangements that befuddle a straight-thinking person. Some of those secrets have been revealed (e.g. the ISIS spanking new Toyota pickups and how a tenacious reporter traced the purchaser to an outfit funded by the US State Department; and how a plumber’s truck from Texas (?) ended up with an AA machine gun mounted on its back in Syria!) and there are no doubts now that ISIS is a US mercenary army.
On the other side, we have Russia and its ‘limited’ intervention agenda, maybe measured only to prop up a fragile government, not to deliver a decisive blow to USISIS an clear the land from armed foreigners not invited by the Syrian government.
Most of the secrets will be revealed one day, decades from now, but the revelations will be too late for us or our children to make sense of what’s going on behind the screens perfidious governments have erected to hide the corruption and their crimes.
I’ve seen this question everywhere and I would love to find an answer. That is, how did the Russian Military, with all of its advanced technology miss this giant attack? The Saker! Please, if you have some input on this topic, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Maybe the attacks are not very important. The Russian and Syrian airforces are busy. Now the enemy has concentrated into worthwhile targets, they may receive attention.
Anon,
While the SAA is all-in in this fight, Russia is not. Russia has a lot of other areas to monitor outside of Syria as well and does not have unlimited resources to devote to one piece on the chessboard, even if it is a very important piece.
While the attack caused a lot of casualties, it was not a type that could hold positions. Yes, it is a headline maker but it does not change the final outcome which is becoming inevitable unless the corrupt armies of zion get more directly involved.
Anon,
It isn’t popular to say so so around here but ‘partners’ are working together…
To cull the revolutionary energy of a generation, who in the Arab-Islamic world took to Jihad because it was promted to idealistic young people, mostly unemployed young men, as a ‘solution’ to the injustices of zionist socialist capitalism.
As with World War I and follow up WW2, oligarchical elites use war to achieve multiple objectives, including especially the castration of manhood because it is a threat to the long term zionist grip on power.
where did ISIS get tanks etc ? Made in the USA ?
I am absolutely amazed how many tanks and other big and small equipment seems to be available to ISIS, SDF, etc etc —-that article re illegal arms export from Balkans via Azerbaijan is most illuminating too. Note recent 200 truck convoy delivering to groups in Syria too…………….
I wouldn’t want to be a Russian soldier captured by ISIS> glad to hear that the Russian Military denied it
Yes, where did USIS get those tanks? And why are US soldiers safe among them? Meanwhile, USIS gains appear to be short lived according to last night’s AMN Al-Masdar news.
According to ‘Syrian Generation’ ISIS’s desperate hit & run on SAA & allies position along the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor highway went something like this:
ISIS had readied troops form Al Qaem (Iraq) and Al Bukamel and had stationed them bit by bit, to avoid airstrikes on conveys, in (Iraqi) desert positions.
On zero hour the vehicles crossed border and entered Syria, heading directly to attack positions without securing flanks, etc. – thus not capturing any territory at any stage during the raid. Using its foreign-mercenary elite forces and up to 15 SVBIEDs ISIS inflicted substantial losses on the SAA & allies.
The SAA & allies’ counterattack was swift forceful, regaining most lost points and inflicting huge losses in men and hardware.

Breaking: Captured ISIS Fighters Admit Cooperation Between ISIS and the U.S.
https://www.globalresearch.ca/breaking-captured-isis-fighters-admit-cooperation-between-isis-and-the-u-s/5611043
“This time, Warfare Worldwide organization twitted a video, where an ISIS fighter from Deir Ezzor revealed some shocking details about U.S.-ISIS collusion. According to Mohammed Moussa al-Shawwakh, the U.S. and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) guaranteed to protect them from the SAA and its allies in exchange for them entering gas and oil fields in the region in order to make propaganda videos. Al-Shawwakh said that this kind of cooperation had taken place in the Conoco gas field, allegedly captured by the SDF. The fighter added that according to the agreements, ISIS terrorists were forbidden to attack Kurdish forces in Deir Ezzor.
A day later, Arabitoday posted another video, where an ISIS terrorist confirmed the cooperation between the U.S.-backed Kurdish forces and ISIS. Mohammed Hussein al-Hamad said that similar arrangements were followed by Kurds during the ‘liberation’ of the al-Izba and Jafra oil fields. Besides, al-Hamad said that the SDF forces had often delivered the U.S.-made weapons to ISIS terrorists.”
Well, despite the “Russia is failing” tag team trolling, things are steadily moving along in Syria towards a total defeat for israel.
Russian air strikes kill 2,000+ ISIS, Al-Nusra terrorists in Syria in 11 days – military (VIDEO)
https://www.rt.com/news/405121-russian-air-strikes-kill-2000-isis/
“Russian air strikes in Syria between September 19 and 29 resulted in the deaths of 2,359 militants with a further 2,700 or so wounded, the Russian Ministry of Defense has announced. 16 field commanders, and over 400 citizens from the former USSR are among the casualties.
The ministry said that over 11 days Russian aircraft destroyed 67 militant outposts, 51 armories, 27 tanks, 21 rocket launchers and nearly 200 specialized vehicles belonging to the Islamist groups.
The ministry said that the air strikes helped repel counter-offensives by militants in the provinces of Idlib and Deir ez-Zor. A region on the Iraqi border, Deir ez-Zor has seen some of the heaviest fighting anywhere in Syria over the past few months.
“With help from the Russian Air Force, the Syrian army is currently completing the encirclement and destruction of a large Islamic State force, numbering about 1,500 fighters, which invaded from Iraq, in the eastern part of Deir ez-Zor,” said the ministry.
September 30 marks the second anniversary of the Russian army’s involvement in the Syrian conflict, at the behest of the government of Bashar Assad. Moscow recently said that government forces have retaken control of 87 percent of the country’s territory.”
Does anyone know what has happened to the syrianperspective website?
The site was hacked. It’s up again.
Eric Zuesse has an article expanding on this info of daesh-kurd-usa collusion in Syria.
Trump’s Support for ISIS Angers Readers
https://www.strategic-culture.org/news/2017/09/30/trump-support-for-isis-angers-readers.html
“So: even American ‘news’-reports are acknowledging that the Trump Administration is seeking to break up Syria, though not acknowledging that ISIS is cooperating with SDF toward this goal.
Furthermore, the Wall Street Journal’s report is implicitly acknowledging that the U.S.-backed SDF is focused more on overthrowing the Government, or else breaking up Syria into ethnic enclaves (as the U.S. Government, and Israel, have long wanted), by reporting that, “‘Our goal is to prevent the regime from taking the areas of oil which will enable it to regain control of the country like it was before’ the start of the 2011 antigovernment uprising, Delsos Derrik, an SDF commander, said.” Even the WSJ is implicitly acknowledging that Trump continues Obama’s primary goal in Syria to be conquest of Syria, instead of any authentic effort against jihadists such as Al Qaeda or ISIS there. Even the WSJ is implicitly accepting that Trump has been lying.”
It’s important to realise and understand that trump is lying and has been lying all along, especially with regard to Syria.
