I have never understood where the myth of the ‘clever Israelis’ came from (probably from the ‘superior Jewish intellect’ canard, itself a blatantly self-serving and racist belief). Today, the Israeli handling of the Hamas phenomenon appears to me as an ideal case study in stupidity and arrogance. I just came across such a perfect example of this delusional arrogance that I decided that I needed to share it with you.
Watch this ‘security expert’ explaining on Israeli TV how the world wide outrage over the Israeli policies towards Gaza is just, well, the result of bad PR. Heck! If the Prime Miniser had a specialist in charge of political spin Israeli policies would be far better understood. Just listen to this guy:
Amazing, isn’t it? What I really would like to know is what percentage of Israelis today really believe that crap? Judging from the comment by a citizen from Haifa I posted at the bottom my analysis of the Gaza situation (see under ‘update’), at least some are fully aware of the idiocy of such theories.
Bottom line: Chutzpah is not the same thing as intelligence or foresight, and while the Israelis seem to have the former in abundant supply, the latter is – by definition – something which is mutually exclusive with arrogance and self-worship.

Yeah, the arrogant tunnel vision of “imperial hubris” simply prohibits you from being able to see the most obvious things. The Nazis, the British in India, The americans with the native population up to the population in Iraq today can convince themselves that they are doing what they are doing “for your own good.” We can do no wrong and if you think we are there must be some communications glitch! Karl Rove and the White House press secretaries show this frame of mind explicitly. Any question of American atrocity addressed to a White House press secretary is instantly ducked, dodged, rationalized and spun under the general premise that we own the world and can do no wrong.Any thought to the contrary is , by definition, completely absurd in principle! Israel’s propaganda ministry is alot like ours in the way that they, like us, simply invaded and colonized a land that was not their own and it takes alot of propagandistic brainwashing to cover up that obvious fact and turn yourselves into the good guys, even the POOR VICTIMS of the situation!
I take it this guy is the Israeli equivalent of Richard Perle – a polite, well spoken, genteel man who is completely full of crap.

VS,
You are coming at this from the viewpoint of someone untainted by the MSM’s coverage of ME events. This guy is right in a way. Israel has been able to control the coverage of news at least in America. You will never, ever, see an article in the NYT or Wash Post suggesting that Israelis are ever doing anything except “retaliating against”,”responding to”, “answering” unprovoked attacks.
Always innocent, always minding their own business, never wanting to hurt a hair on anyone’s head. Same with their colonies which became settlements and at one point “neighborhoods” bringing to mind your serene suburban American town. Who wouldn’t be outraged if bombs started exploding in our suburbs for no reason.
None of this bias would really matter if Americans were clued into the Zionist slant of the newspapers and MSM in general. The problem is that the media pose as objective arbiters of the truth, fair, and analytical.
It is increasingly transparent to some but most people are oblivious. The Ron Paul candidacy is yet another example. The media truly don’t care who is winning as long as it is not RP or Gravel or Kucinich. They have essentially imposed a blackout on his campaign. Even NPR–the supposedly high browed radio network–would not report the fact that RP came second in the Nevada primary!
So what does this mean for most Americans? Only a a small minority interested in foreign affairs, and interested in alternate viewpoints will know any “narrative” other than the pro-Israeli/Zionist one.
This is unfortunate for us, as a country. Until the media control is broken and alternate viewpoints and real news reaches Americans I just don’t see how anything will change.
Ron Paul is a refreshing change, but look at his numbers. They are pretty disappointing. He is the only candidate who is paying anything more than lip service to the interests of most Americans and Nevada aside, he can’t do much better than fourth!
You are coming at this from the viewpoint of someone untainted by the MSM’s coverage of ME events.
You are right here, I don’t even have a TV, I never read the papers or listen to FM/AM radio and I get none of my news from the corporate news sources. I even began calling NPR “Neocon Public Radio” :-)

Yes, that is true. Where I live there are Ron Paul signs all over, but exactly ZERO coverage of Ron Paul (according to my wife who glances at the papers people leave at work).
So what does this mean for most Americans? Only a a small minority interested in foreign affairs, and interested in alternate viewpoints will know any “narrative” other than the pro-Israeli/Zionist one.
You are, sadly enough, quite correct again, although the Internet is challenging this situation; maybe things will get better in time…
Is it just me who finds this one of the most exhilarating moments in Middle East affairs for, well, ages? It’s interesting – in a sad sort of way – to watch the Hasbarites flail around trying to somehow wrest the moral high ground here: Having openly admitted that their plan was to impose extreme hardship on a civilian population, they know try to make us feel sorry for Israel because ‘militants might bring back weapons’. Breaking my heart, lads.
That aside, this episode also proves the hollowness of those who claim that they would support the Palestinians, ‘if only they didn’t target civilians’ or ‘if only they would use non-violent protest’. Well, the hollowness of the first claim was proven in the summer of 2006, when Israelists justified the IOF’s brutal onslaught on Gaza and Lebanon because of the ‘kidnapping’ of 3 uniformed soldiers. The second claim – which has always been false, because the Palestinians use unarmed protest every day of their lives, simply by existing – has also been shown as the canard it is by this whole affair. The Zionist talking heads desperately try to paint this as a security breach, yet the whole world sees housewives and teenaged boys overjoyed at the chance to buy bread, fuel and mattresses, things which the rest of us take completely for granted.
In short, Israel’s evil policy of collective punishment has turned around to hit them in the face. Big time.
The real cause of Israel’s greatness:
http://cleantech-israel.blogspot.com/2008/01/israel-cleantech-ventures-invests-in.html
This is the reason the entire world envies Israel. More than a fifth of Israelis are Palestinians muslim Arabs. Much of Israel’s leading R&D, entrepreneurship, and success is lead by Palestinian Israelis. They are the envy of the world.
Just imagine a free trade and investment agreement between Gaza and Israel. Gaza Palestinians have the same potential as the realized potential of Israeli Palestinians. Try to imagine the benefits of Israeli/Gaza collaboration, cooperation and interdependence. Imagine how much it would advance human knowledge and living standards around the world. How many cutting edge bio-fuels inventions . . . how many photovoltaic inventions . . . how many transformative technological breakthroughs?
Let us remember the song “Imagine.” This is the future in front of the Israelis and Gaza Palestinians. All they need to do is work together in brotherhood, friendship and spirit as they so long to do.
Irish eyes this is indeed one of the most exhilerating times in recorded human history. Technology promisses sharp reductions in poverty. Much of that technology might be lead by Palestinians and their Israeli brothers.
Your missing out on the whole picture when it comes to Israel’s greatness Anand.
Israel has a proud history of reverse engineering propietary American military technolgy and selling Israeli knockoffs at a discount on the global arms market. It is widely believed that the intelligence stolen by Jonathon Pollard, in addition to causing the deaths of a number of CIA agents, was sold to Russian and Chines buyers. In his book Palextine Peace, Not Apartheid Jimmy Carter talks of his visit to Israel where he was briefed by Israeli officials who petitioned him for not only the right to buy F-15 aircraft, but for the ability to export the machine tools to Israel so they could manufacture the aircraft on their own assembly lines, thereby uncovering all the trade secrets that go into their manufacture and design. It is also believed the Merkava tank was built with technology stolen from the design of the Abrams M1.
Take a look at this quote from Jewish Voice for Peace:
“Yesterday, AIPAC had an amendment to recommit the whole Armed Services Bill in order to add language requiring America to develop missile defenses jointly with Israel, to share all its missile defense technology with Israel. That passed overwhelmingly. There were only thirty members—that’s less than 10 percent—who voted against sharing all our missile technology with Israel. It received about 400 votes in favor of it. I was one of the thirty.”
You’re an h1b from India I presume, so you ought to know how costly the R&D that goes into such a system is. And we give it away to Israel. So much for the much vaunted “military-industrial complex.” We can’t even protect American defense contractors’ rights to earn profits on their own technology.

I meant to say “You’re missing out …”
“
This is the reason the entire world envies Israel.”
Speak for yourself, Mr. Friedman.
But I have a question for you, one to which I’d appreciate an honest answer. If Israel is indeed such an economic powerhouse, th envy of the world’, who on earth is it receiving 3 billion dollars a year in US charity? A country so succesful should surely be paying its own bills, rather than receiving amounts of charity which dwarf those given to countries like Burkina Faso?
“Technology promisses sharp reductions in poverty.”
I know you’re living in fantasy land and didn’t even see the TV images the whole world saw. But what I saw was an ugly metal wall being downed by simply metal cutters and crude explosives, then to be breached by good old fashioned people power.
But please, go on believing the world is flat, and don’t pay any attention to the sheer injustice the rest of us see perpetrated by Israel on a daily basis.

It is strongly in Israel’s interests to stop taking aid from America. I have long advocated that as Israel’s friend, and motivated by Israel’s best interests, we Americans should phase out all foreign aid to Israel.
And the world does admire Israel, in spite of its many imperfections. I might add that the whole world is also in awe of Ireland’s economic miracle since the 1980s. Certainly I am. Ireland proves how free democratic free market capitalism is so beneficial for reducing poverty around the world. It isn’t only the Irish people who have benefited from the Irish economic miracle. The rest of the world has also benefited in the form of more rapid global technological progress than would otherwise be the case.
Technology is a public good that everyone benefits, not just the economic agent discovering it.

The entire conflict between Gaza and Israel is an injustice perpetuated by both against themselves, each other and the rest of the world. They should both be ashamed of themselves, and try to get along as brothers for their own sake and the sake of the rest of the world.
I am a free trade, free investment, free worker mobility kind of guy, and have to admit that I like seeing walls come down. As a friend of mine says, “It is also the first instance I’m aware that Hamas’ weapons have accomplished anything that can be remotely regarded as positive for Palestinian civilians. But who is counting?”
