I would love to see a rigorous cost-benefit analysis that demonstrates that achieving ‘full spectrum dominance’ in Eurasia – or that the Iraqi war & the GWOT, for that matter – actually redound benefits to America that exceed the value of the costs we sustain. The venerr of geopolitical strategizing is just an excuse; it cannot confer any net benefit. Those who wield the tools of American power do so because of ulterior motive. This is not it.
Great piece. If you want to see what is driving this insanity of full-spectrum dominance, watch the interview Bill Moyers did with Andrew Bacevich on Friday, 15 Aug 08. An imperial army defending the dysfunctional American way of life. It is only going to get worse. http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/08152008/profile.html
Alot of folks, even those who are otherwise skeptical about the professed reasons for our policies, swallow shit like this whole. It does not take much thinking to realize that risking nuclear destruction makes no sense if your goal is only profit which you can have aplenty without controlling the mines and oil wells. Rationales like this get the “controversial” title and even get air time on MSM, but they don’t deserve much respect.
Basically, the long term goal is to destroy Russia as a power, make it into a fractured, prostrate country, like Iraq. And the reason seems to be based on ethnic hatred–for Slavs–and lingering bitterness over the Trostkyite/neocons’ loss of power. This guy either does not know or is just blind to other deeper, albeit less rational, motives.
