“Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president of the country, Juan Guaido, has published a video calling on soldiers to join the ranks of his supporters against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Nicolas Maduro spoke out on the ongoing situation, hours after the provocative video was published, saying that he has spoken with military leaders and that they have shown “their total loyalty”.
“Nerves of steel. I spoke to the commanders of all Integral Strategic Defense Regions (REDI) and Integral Defense Operations Zones (ZODI), who declared their complete loyalty to the people, the constitution and homeland. I call for maximum popular mobilization to confirm the victory of the peace. We will win,” Maduro wrote on Twitter.”

Guaidó moved to the Plaza Altamira, a place of regular opposition protests in a wealthy quarter, and speaks to a minor crowd.
There are claims, including by Marco Rubio, that Guaidó supporters have taken the La Carlota Base. (La Carlota’s official name is Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda Air Base.) These reports are false. The small gang of Guaidó soldiers and some Guaidó supporters are on a highway bridge near the entrance of the air base. The base is in the hand of government forces. The opposition never entered it.
Someone points out that the soldiers supporting Guaidó carry M4 Colt assault rifles. The official assault rifle of the Venezuelan military is the Kalashnikov AK-103. Back in February there were a number of flights from Florida to Venezuela which delivered weapons to the opposition.

Guaidó seems to have neither a base nor large scale military support nor access to significant military equipment. If that does not change this coup attempt is likely to fail within a few hours.

“Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino gave a press conference to narrate how today’s attempted coup in Venezuela had occurred.
“This is a cowardly, terrorist act and an attempted coup d’état of a very small magnitude,” he said and stressed that Guaido’s far-right forces “have tricked a group of men with hijacked vehicles of our national guard to commit a terrorist act.”
Minister Padrino also mentioned that the Bolivarian militia reacted immediately to the coup attempt and “their commanders put themselves at the head of their troops to reject a cowardly act.”
I hear The Saker in my ears. “We have to wait”, is what he will say.
From all the usual news sources and reports, it is impossible to gauge the situation on the ground.
Venezuelas are loath to take this to civil war.
Guaido inspires only a lean minority.
The majority simply wants improvement in their lives.
The US will have to create a blood bath or violent reaction of some historic level to move the military to change from Maduro to another leader.
Tomorrow, May Day marches will give another picture.
However, this evening and tonight gives the US chaos makers their opportunity for terrorism. Expect explosions of infrastructure.
Turkey, Iran, Russia and China have loudly commented on the new situation. They all know the game that is being played. With Cuba inside the government it is hard to imagine that tactics are not ready for whatever the US tries.

There are millions of Venezuelans who want change. However, like most poor and middle class, they are not willing to fight and die for radical change. Common sense solutions exist that can deliver change and improvement in Venezuela. The Chinese and Russians have offered them for several years.
Creating a false equation, as you opine, gets us nowhere. This isn’t an uprising of the elites. It’s a regime change, hybrid war by one government (US) against a sovereign government elected in a fair election. The elites are as much puppets of the Hegemon as the paid rock throwers in the streets.
Trying to justify itself as a democracy movement and uprising against a failed socialist experiment is just the wrappings.
The Guaido experiment is almost over. But how it ends is quite another thing.

As long as the Maduro government allows the traitor Guaido to continue his coup,the US is winning. The anti-democracy Americans have been statements for awhile threatening war, death, destruction and torture should Guido be arrested. This has gone on enough. Time for the government of Venezuela to arrest, imprison, and put on trial for treason the moron Guiado. Execute him, that will shoot a lighting bolt of reality into the idiot countries that are going along with the demented regime-change loving US.
Yes, I know we all want to see Guiadó arrested or something, plus his handlers. But he is a puppet. Venezuela is in a difficult position as Guiadó is positioned as political opposition. So, one does not jail your political opposition in a democracy. Venezuela is using the word ‘terrorism’ today. Perhaps that will stick and then of course, they can take action. The dust must settle.
I agree that one does not jail the political opposition that abides by the rule of law. However, one does arrest, investigate and indict coup practitioners because these violate basic democratic rules.
Regarding Guaido, Venezuela could arrest him and his fellow coup practitioners to avoid further violence and until their actions are fully investigated. If the USA or other states would try to get them liberated without due process and justice being served first, Venezuela could tell those states that Guaido and his ilk would be shot.

It would be nice to have a map of Caracas handy in order to have a clear vision of the mise en scene. Evidently, La Corona ( military base which bisects the city) is held by the government but a bridge and roadway leading to it and alongside it is not.
