Unfortunately, this would only be the beginning.
Immediately after, much of humanity would suffer from burns, radiation poisoning, lack of water, food, medicine, and heating.
In the following months, the disruption to transportation, communication, and food and energy production would keep killing more people.
And should the nuclear winter hypothesis prove to be correct, cold, famine, and, later, skin cancers (due to the ozone depletion) would continue to exact great fatalities for years to come.
In short, nuclear war is not something we should wish for. We need to pray that our Lord grants wisdom to our leaders.

Mooky, I am afraid that a war among the global powers would not be one of chastisement but of severe punishment. As PostDoc notes below, the models predict absolutely massive casualties, over 75% spread over a decade.
Fits together with the deag.. predictions. Depopulation until 0,5-2 billion over the next 10 years. The rest in bunkers and underground cities. All prepared in all details many decades ago.

Let’s not forget that chemical plants and refineries would likely be hit (either directly or in consequence of nuclear devastation) as well, which would lead to dangerous chemicals and heavy metal leaks, contaminating groundwater, soil, and air. Everything would get contaminated really fast.
Russia will have to point out that important States like Israel,and so called neutral States like Switzerland will also be getting a few nukies all of their own. There will be no hiding place for the Jens Stoltenbergs and Kissingers. Might focus a few minds.

Its some time since he has not been involved in “the worst of the worst” for the cause of “leverage and influence” so I would imagine he lust a funeral of his taste at this stage.
I have sat in on some of the “University” led Post-Grad research groups who come out with these things. The only information they make public is that which has little financial or name-making potential.
The useful information goes to whoever or whatever is funding it – often shells hiding a Governent dept of some description (for those who do not know, University Reseach is quite often paid for by a shell so that Governments can avoid public oversight – the same goes for weapons development, with private companies doing the work behind closed doors).
To cut a long story short, if Princeton has released this it means it has little value, if any at all. Indeed these kind of Euro Theatre projections are very old and serve nobody other than fear narative of “Russia Bad”.
Back in the 1990’s I saw projections of the next global war fought on CONUS, with – wait for it – Venezuela being used as a Russian lauch pad, Hmmm, we dont see many projections involving Venezuela do we – that is because these are much more valid than the Euro Theatre.
Other projections I have seen involve Iran and China, and these too are rarely seem, I wonder why.
Back in the 1990’s, under every projection I saw, the US and the UK were completely destroyed as first world nations. Iran, Russia, and China were severely damaged but not to the point of destruction.
If any reader has access to any of these old projections it would be useful to link them or copy and paste key parts, as during these times of increased tensions in Europe the models and projections show how a real war will be fought.
But of course the US and UK do not want there people to know that any war (total war that is) fought with Russia, China, and even Iran would result in thier eventual defeat and / or total destruction.
It is interesting that in the old 1990’s models nuclear weapons were not always used to defeat the US and UK – the strongest results were from internal chaos caused by the complete take down of the electricity grid, followed by disruption to supply chains, followed by destruction of global logistics, followed by the mopping up of isolated and unsupported expeditionary forces.
Of course all models and predictions are just that – no one knows what will really happen in the event of a major war, but I always find it suspect when euro theatre predictions are rolled out without any American continent models / predictions.
Out of all the predictions I have seen in recent years that offered by Deagel under thier 2025 projection is perhaps the most closely matching the various outcomes I have seen modeled in the 90’s. Spoiler – China replaces the US as top global and economc power, with Russia in 3rd place behind India.
The US looses its Dollar reserve and over 80% of its population, but recovers to take a place back in the global top 10.
But the UK fairs far worse – 3rd world status and complete collapse with around 90% population loss and a global position so low even Ethiopia and Sudan have a higher economic and political status.
This actually fits quite well with other current predictions of the UK starting a war with Russia and being utterly destroyed as a result.

Indeed, the expected catastrophe defies our understanding.
Just an EMP weapon would suffice to collapse our civilization.
A single detonation over the US would suffice to fry all transistor-based unhardened electronics in North America (from Mexico to Canada), which would take us back to the steam age, with the population to shrink accordingly to pre-industrial levels (>75% population reduction).
Why such devastation? Because, without electronics, in our “smart-age” almost nothing would work. From water pumps to power plants, from automobiles to medical records, everything relies on transistor-based electronics, so they are expected to burn out. Accordingly, people would die en masse from thirst, hunger, disease, exposure, etc. As a secondary cause, crime is expected to rise tremendously.
Of course, an all-out global war would be far more devastating. This is not something to wish for.
I would bet on a complete nuclear assault on the Five Eyes, exclusively: The US, UK, NZ, Canada and Australia would be smoking ruins (except for inner Australia, because hardly anyone lives there).

From what I understand, Russia has the upper hand in conventional warfare, and therefore it is the US who would probably be the first to resort to nuclear weapons..?

Pretty much, but US excrement doesn’t stink. They have to portray themselves as comic book super heroes. All this despite the fact it is their nuclear doctrine being most aggressive and including first strike. Yeah, but let’s make a cartoon of Russians popping off. West leadership is so evil they can grow me gray hair on demand.
My understanding of the relative capabilities is that Russia has full nuclear weapons superiority over the USA, although i have never seen a summary of capabilities if the UK+French nuclear capacity is added to the US – versus China+North Korea added to the Russian capability.
In terms of conventional weapons, the USSR did have superiority over NATO but all that i have read is that the Russia of today had less conventional forces capability and hence would be more likely to go nuclear if attacked. ie if the US were to attack Russia with either conventional or nuclear weapons, Russia is most likely to respond with a nuclear salvo…
I remember the days in my ignorant youth when i used to defend the US nuclear weapons as being cleaner than the Russian ones…as the US weapons would apparently devastate a smaller area with radioactivity…so caring were the Americans…
Nowadays i realise the US offers us a wonderful choice between getting fried, basted, cooked, boiled, toasted, microwaved…

Simulation of this kind are rather for political reasons.
Fascinating really. A full on nuclear war would kill maybe say 100 million (when the long term deaths play out – radiation, poisonous water, lack of food, famine, disease etc)
When you consider how overpopulated the planet is, it gives you some ideas as to how impossible it would be to try and control it. Environmental devastation is the only thing that can control the human virus. We need to shed four or five billion and by the looks of this the worst war in history wouldn’t even get us started. Perspective is everything.
