May I recommend a book for Jew-Haters? It is written by an Iranian Muslim immigrant to the U.S. named Reza Aslan. He has written a few really fascinating books. This one is a great read and a New York Times bestseller to boot: Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. This book really gives a great perspective on Jewish history in First Century Palestine written by a comparative religions scholar and convert to Christianity. This book would be very interesting for Muslims, Christians, orthodox or reform or atheist Jews, atheists, Buddhists, Hindus, etc. Very interesting. The best line in the book is from his extensive notes in the back of the book: regarding the titulus, or plaque placed above the cross of the condemned: he says that many bible scholars and other readers of the Bible think the script on Jesus’s titulus is a bit of sarcastic Roman humor; Aslan corrects this misperception by stating, “the Romans were known for a lot of things, but humor was not one of them.” Ha ha. Well, they certainly were all-business when it came to punishing sedition.
This is a really interesting and well written book, no matter one’s religious persuasion, or lack of.

This very readable book lays out the almost unimaginable suffering of the poor Jewish peasantry in the Galilee of Jesus’s time and all the internecine strife and terrible wealth disparity within the Jewish community. The Jews never have been and perhaps never will be one big single-minded monolithic block. Very sobering, philosophical, and thought-provoking narrative.
Sometimes people need a fresh perspective on the “Zionist” point of view. Not ALL Zionists are evil masters of the universe. Interesting conversation. Just one minor correction: It was TIME magazine that named Hitler man of the year for 1938, not the New York Times. TIME’s owner back then was Henry Luce, who was a Presbyterian, not an “Irishman” (in Kedmi’s humorous sense).

Kedmi first became known in 1967 when he twice burst into the Israeli embassy in Moscow and demanded help in emigrating to Israel. His name was Yasha Kazakov back then. He kept on creating scandals until the authorities got fed up and deported him.
