U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper told Europeans, in statements on July 29th and August 9th,
“We are moving many troops further east, closer to Russia’s border, to deter them.”
The U.S. Department of Defense’s website, when it issued the transcript of Esper’s statement “so that we can all deter Russia and avoid peace in Europe,” added in brackets, “[editor’s note. Secretary Esper intended to say ‘avoid conflict in Europe’]”; however, that does not appear to reflect Esper’s statement, for the following reasons:
1. The assertion “so that we can all deter Russia and avoid peace in Europe” was so inflammatory as to demand a ‘correction’ regardless of whether that statement was consistent with everything else that he has been saying, and it is consistent with everything else that he has been saying.
2. Esper’s 4,800-word speech on that occasion did not use the word “conflict” even once. It is not a word that he typically uses. By contrast, against that zero frequency for “conflict,” he used there “deter” 21 times. He used “peace” three times. Each of those was in a hostile context: First, “One of our primary missions is to prevent another great power war, and to maintain great power peace. The National Defense Strategy, the NDS, guides our efforts to adapt the force, and the EUCOM plan optimizes our force posture in Europe as we seek to deter malign actors there.” Second, “These efforts all increase our opportunity to generate greater peace in Europe and enhance the U.S.’s effectiveness in great power competition.” Third, “And I’ve said that very publicly, I’ve said that very privately to my counterparts as well, about the importance of NATO, any alliance, sharing the burden so that we can all deter Russia and avoid peace in Europe.”
He used the phrase “great power competition” five times: First, “Today, we want to update you on the status of our U.S. European Command review, which was accelerated with the president’s decision in early June to reduce our footprint in Germany, and our plans to reposition our forces in Europe to be better-situated for great power competition.” Second, “As we’ve entered a new era of great power competition, we are now at another one of those inflection points in NATO’s history.” Third, “One of our primary missions is to prevent another great power war, and to maintain great power peace.” (“Great power peace” did not mean “peace” in any broader sense but only that the U.S. does not want to become a battlefield in World War III — that’s for Europe, etc., not for the U.S., to serve as the war-fields; it would be like happened during WW II. This was a very careful usage of words.) Fourth, “We focus on actions inside and outside our area of responsibility, and vigilance with respect to great power competition is an absolute imperative.” (That reaffirms Esper’s focus on “great power competition.” Europe’s nations are vassal-states. They are expendable. The way that Barack Obama said this was “The United States is and remains the one indispensable nation.” Every other nation is “dispensable.” How much clearer can it be? Furthermore: Esper explicitly asserts there that “We focus on actions inside and outside our area of responsibility,” which means that the U.S. military imposes its will “outside our area of responsibility” — anywhere in the world — meaning against any real or imagined “great power competitor,” which refers specifically to both Russia and China. Consequently, the U.S. regime demands that Europe get in line with the U.S. Government’s objective to defeat both Russia and China. He says that this is “an absolute imperative.”) Fifth, “These efforts all increase our opportunity to generate greater peace in Europe and enhance the U.S.’s effectiveness in great power competition.” (“Greater peace in Europe” implies that European nations are at war. It’s a lie. Esper has made clear that “great power competition” is the U.S. regime’s obsessive focus.)
The other assertion, that “We are moving many troops further east, closer to Russia’s border, to deter them,” is a clear affirmation of the U.S. regime’s lie to Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990 when he was ending the Cold War on Russia’s side — ending its communism, ending its Warsaw Pact military alliance, ending the Soviet Union — and George Herbert Walker Bush deceived him into believing that NATO would not move “one inch to the east.” The sheer evilness of that man and of all subsequent U.S. Presidents, for their ceaseless efforts ultimately to conquer Russia, and now with Trump also to conquer China, is perhaps unsurpassed in human history, competing even with Adolf Hitler. It’s what happens when a country — in this instance the United States — gets taken over by its aristocracy, its billionaires.
Europe is to serve, along with the Middle East and elsewhere, as America’s battlefields to conquer Russia and China. That’s the plan.

Deter Russia ? From what ?
Putin and his team are the peacemakers.
His recent speeches called for untied action with US to solve world problems.
All the Russians want is to be left alone to develop their economy better and help friends in need who are being attacked.
From what? From living peacefully, apparently. Peace ain’t good for business in the US, whose only export these days is death and destruction. Why the lackey Europeans continue to give US officials an audience is the only question. The world should simply quarantine the entire US for the good of humanity. CV19 certainly provides the cover.
This arguement falls appart on the fact that when asked to leave Subic Bay the US did. That has been a disaster for the Subic Bay econony. If it is all so terrible for Germany, Italy, Poland, Britian, etc, etc., why don’t they just tell the US To Please Leave. This is why your argument holds no water. None of them have asked the US to leave.
Because they do not want to be another Iran, Iraq or Libya. They are afraid, is that too hard to understand?
America left Subic Bay because America owned the Philippines lock stock and barrel to begin with, and were and are eyeing naval bases closer to China/Russia in places like Vietnam. Plus, Subic bay can always be reopened if need be.
Well please tell me what European country has asked the US to leave. No, Germany is mad cause Trump is taking out 12000.
Irak asked the US to leave. Guess what they are still there.
@ Laurent
Exactly.
(And besides, concerning the above “… Germany, Italy, Poland, Britain … None of them have asked the US to leave …”, the key is in the word “them” – the ruling regimes of those wretched decaying countries, all weak and obedient U.S. poodles.)
If I had my way Trump would pull all our troops out of every none US territory cut off all military aid, readopt the Teddy Roosevelt doctine and spend our money on building the worlds most deadly spacebased weapon system. You know make sure the Chinese pay attention. I would follow that up with a total embargo of China. Squeeze them till there economy collapses. You no its tough when you loose your biggest customer.
“… If I had my way …”
For the “U.S.” that might have “worked” some 3/4 of a century ago, but fortunately, not any longer.
You do know what happens to every high school “almighty” bully. By sweet 18, he becomes a certified nothing and nobody. Not to mention that he never gets even a peek into a university … he gets some menial, lowly blue-collar job at best (if he is lucky) – or he keeps shuttling through the revolving prison door throughout his whole life at worst (more likely). And so it is with the has-been “U.S.”. The bully has reached its “18” quite some time ago, wouldn’t you say…
Spoken like a true American. They have been slaughtering others for almost the entire existence of the nation. Why stop now? So, your good idea is to continue the slaughter. Deadly space-based weapons and economic war to starve and otherwise kill millions of civilians. A true Amerian indeed!
“If I had my way…”
Why? What exactly is the basis for your aggressive chest-thumping and threats against nations & peoples who represent no danger at all to the USA, and in fact whose only crime has been to NOT submit to the USA’s games of Empire?
Yes, we all understand the juvenile “USA! USA! USA!” tribalism, but maybe some of you with a few brain cells and some residual conscience might stand back every now and then and question the morally bankrupt stature of your country – even if only to recognize the progressive destitution and destruction of your own society for the exclusive & obscene benefit of a microscopic minority.
What has China done, exactly, to deserve this?
Marcus Chapman is a typical AmeriNazi–the inbred spawn of a “Good German” of the Third Reich with a chest-beating, flag-waving American Exceptionalist.
What’s really hilarious, however, is how delusional he is about American supremacy.
First, this clown boasts about how America can build a sooper-dooper Death Star-style space weapon.
Yeah, keep telling yourself that. The American military high command was recently soiling its panties about Russia deploying satellites that can, shall we say, interdict American space assets. Donald Trump’s Space Force is more like a Space Farce.
Next, this clown does himself even better by fantasizing that America can collapse the Chinese economy by cutting off its access to the US market, which is its “biggest customer.” What this idiot apparently doesn’t realize is that America is NOT China’s biggest customer. Europe is. China is economically decoupling itself from America and treating it like a COVID-19 outbreak–which is symbolically appropriate given that America is the world’s leader in COVID-19 deaths.
Bottom line: America is heading for a catastrophic fall–including the possible end of the (former) United States of America as an entity.
People outside of America–who are not brainwashed America-Lovers–will be grabbing a big bag of popcorn and watching as America devolves into the very sh!thole that it derides other countries as.

@Anonymous
There’s a blog titled The New Kremlin Stooge that is run by a guy named Mark Chapman, who I would not imagine writing what this ‘Marcus Chapman’ writes. I’d be surprised if they were one and the same.
What you are writing here is a very weak attempt to put the situation in a certain light. As if the Europeans would have any choice. Since when have vassal states the right to ask their masters to leave? If the German and Italian population had a free choice and were properly informed about the nature of the US empire and their countries role in it, they would chase the Americans to hell. That the corrupt bootlicker elites of Italy and Germany don’t do so is self-evident. How many times did the Okinawans ask their occupiers to leave? Inform yourself about what the US regime of occupation has done to that island, it might enlighten you.
In the game of empire, Victory is all that matters. American must start by purging all the traitors within first.
You really think the muricans would just leave by asking them?
Come on thats total BS
They are here for a reason and that is not protecting Europe but to keep control over their slaves and milking them
The real slaves are the American tax payers. You are right, American is a very poorly run empire. Well run empires do not tax their citizens, they tax everyone who is not a citizen, kind of like muslims. If America was a well run empire it would take assets from non citizens and give it to those loyal to the empire. All those not loyal would be purged.
Taking assets from non-citizens… sounds like theft, doesn’t it?

I suggest you do some more homework before you make comments.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subic_Bay
“After the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption, the Americans closed the base, and the area was transformed into the Subic Bay Freeport Zone.”
I recall vividly the moment when the Volcano erupted and the US was left with no other option but to leave… ergo if the volcano had not erupted, the US would still be there, whether the Philippine government protested or not….
A more recent situation affirms this: The Okinawan population specifically elected a leader who would tell the Americans to leave the island…. Hillary Clinton at the time refused – by stating that the redeployment on the island would be decided by the US and not by Okinawa.
Note – redeployment, not evacuation.
In the days of Clarke Airfield & Subic Naval Base, the “Subic Bay economy” like that of any suburb bordering an American base almost anywhere in the world, was largely famous for prostitution, gambling and crime.
I’m sure it’s much quieter now and whilst the bargirls and vice-peddlers might miss the yanks, the locals who had nothing to do with such pursuits will prefer them all gone.

“Angeles ranked 15th in a survey by MoneySense magazine as one of the “Best Places to Live in the Philippines” in its March–April 2008 issue” – Angeles is the town next to the airbase, so 15 years on it’s come far from its red-light days]
It took a literal Act Of God to kick the americans out, burying the bases under volcanic ash.
It seems they were not responsible tenants – from the wiki (*which means the reality is far worse):
“The departure of the United States Navy left a huge clean-up to be completed. Soil and water was contaminated with lead, asbestos, PCBs, pesticides, and possibly nuclear waste from submarines”
Clever deep psychological analysis of language Eric. This says a lot about the psychopathic policies and philosophies running the US at the moment. The subconscious reveals the truth.
Freudian slip of the century
Modern-day MORDOR’s biggest fear is peace anywhere
The Neocons are totally deluded. They think because they can print money they are exceptional and militarily strong, whereas the exact opposite is true. They benefited for a while after WW2 when the rest of the world was broken, but those times are long gone. A good long look in the mirror is what they need – it won’t happen. I hate to say it, but only a very profound military defeat stands any chance of bringing sense to US “policy” and actions. Which is exactly what they will get if they try to mess with China, or (God forbid) Russia – or even Iran for that matter.
In order to “print” money the US Treasury has to borrow money from the private sector.
However, the US private sector banks create money ex nihilo just by making data entries on their computers, that they lend out at compound interest. The US Treasury debt now totals $26 trillion on which approximately $750 billion yearly interest is payable. China on the other hand creates its domestic money supply debt free, since its central bank is government owned. China is now the world’s largest creditor nation with $2.3 trillion in foreign exchange reserves.
This is why China is now ringed with US missile bases in preparation for a war to bring them to heel at the behest of the privately owned international banking cabal.
I very much agree with Eric’s understanding of this reality, based on the words of war hawk, Mark Esper.
I think some analysts fall short because they apply logic only to world events. However, when powerful people are driven by evil passions and compulsions, logic is simply not near enough. I fully expect a 3rd world war. It makes no sense given its destructive nature. If you want to inject some twisted logic into national plans one bit of logic is that the empire can risk a nuclear war because most of the damage will be absorbed by Europe.
